“Jake will you get that balloon out of my face” Gerard cried, swerving the car into the hospital car park. “Move it! Dude I cant see”
”Well if we crash we don’t have far to go” Jake laughed, pulling the balloon onto his lap. “Gerard I feel sick, I can’t believe this all happened last night”
”Neither can I. God I’m a father.” Gerard parked the car and sat for a minute in silence gripping the wheel, “It feels like a dream, I thought it was this morning until I found my bed empty.”
Jake reached over and pulled Gerard into a hug, “Congratulations mate, now get out of this car I want to see her”.
Gerard smiled, and hugged Jake back, opening the car door they looked up at the hospital and walked toward it.
”Jake I’m going to burst that balloon in a minute”
Walking through the corridors Gerard finally found a shop and bought a pink teddy bear, some flowers and a card.
”Always have to go one better don’t you” Jake moaned, clutching his balloon.
”Yes, hey buy her a muffin she will love you ever more then. Her favourite is.”
”Chocolate chip” Jake finished, “She was my wife too you know”.
Laughing together they walked to Jades suite and knocked on the door, a nurse showed them through and checked Jade wasn’t feeding her. Jade was sat upright in bed with Margaret in her arms; the sun from the window illuminated them both. Gerard and Jake stood and stared at them for a while, completely silent. Jake stepped forward first catching Jades attention, her face lit up and she smiled at him, looking sideways she saw Gerard and stuck out her tongue, laughing as he came over and claimed her mouth.
”Aww look Maggie a balloon, oh and teddies you guys are the best thank you” Jade laughed. Jake leant over and kissed her, as Gerard scooped his daughter from Jades arms.
”Mmmm” he laughed, cuddling her, “She has a new born baby smell, oh she’s opening her eyes. Hello baby” he whispered kissing her on the head.
”How was it then?” Jake laughed, passing the muffin to her.
”Absolute agony, never again. I don’t know what I would have done if it weren’t for Gerard.”
”Not been in the situation?” Jake offered, smiling. Jade laughed, “Yeah well that”
”You liking being a mother then? Was it worth it”
Gerard laugher interrupted their conversation, they both turned to look at him.
”She burped, haha she’s worse than you. Ahem, we will be over here” he laughed, sitting in a chair and cradling his child.
”It was worth it to see him so happy”
”Your happy?”
”I’m exhausted, but overjoyed, I love her. I knew I loved her when he placed her in my arms. Look at her Jake”
”I would like to but someone is hogging the love, oi daddy hand over, c’mon uncle Jake needs this” he smiled, prising the baby carefully from Gerard’s arms.
”Watch her head” Gerard growled, “Sit down in case you drop her”
Jade rolled her eyes, “Here we go” she laughed, “I love protective Gerard”
Smiling, Gerard pulled her into a hug, “Mmm hello baby” he whispered, kissing her neck. “Bloody hell those have grown!”
”Well they are full of milk”
”Does it hurt? Feeding her I mean?” He smiled, rubbing her back and holding her against him.
”It did at first, but not any more, it just feels nice now. When can I go home?”
”You really hate hospitals don’t you? Well I did ask the nurse, but with you having stitched they might want to keep you in longer” Jade groaned and dropped her head in his shoulder.
”Well maybe not” he smiled, “We’ll have to see. Right I love you Jade so damn much but get off me, I need my daughter”
Jade laughed and kissed him, “I can’t wait to be home with you and her. A real family.”
”Sure we will be. Perfect I promise. Jake hand over”
Jakes growls filled the room and Jade laughed at the sight of two grown men arguing over who gets to hold the baby. Margaret lay in Jakes arms contently, unbothered by the tones of voice floating over her.
”Right” Jade called, “As mother, I take charge, give me my daughter”
Jake pouted and handed Margaret to her, “Spoilsport” he muttered, seating himself next to Gerard who was also glaring at Jade.
”I made her too” he grumbled to Jake, “I should get to cuddle”
”Well her you are baby” Jade laughed speaking to Margaret, “This is your life now, with this big fool here” Gerard jumped from his seat and peered over Jades shoulder at the baby.
”This is your father, he’s kind of stupid but you will grow to love him. I do. The other idiot is Jake.” Jade laughed as Jake appeared over her other shoulder.
”He’s gay” Gerard added nodding and smiling.
”Well” Jade continued, “There is that, but he loves you too, we all do.”
”When you need money you go to Jake” Gerard laughed stroking Margaret’s face.
All three sat with their arms around each other string down at her. Margaret opened her mouth and squeaked a small yawn, melting the hearts of her three admirers.
”I think that’s a sign” Gerard whispered, lifting the baby from Jade and placing her in her crib. Kneeling down he watched her sleep for a while, as Jade and Jake spoke in the background. Placing the small pink teddy bear beside her he kissed her small head one more time and went to sit with Jade.

Two days later Jade returned home to a full house. Margaret had caught the first flight over to Nyc and was staying at their home. Jake was just hanging around to claim hugs. Mike and Janice sat smiling. Penny and Aaron sat with her mother. Doug sat with his wife. all came bearing Gifts with pink ribbons and white lace. Beaming faces greeted her as she sat down on the sofa, Gerard appeared minutes later with Margaret in the baby seat and placed her next to Jade who took her out and held her for all to see. Everyone crowded around and stared down at the child, but Jade brushed them away and stood to her feet. Gerard’s mother hadn’t got up from her seat; se was sat over the other side of the room with brimming eyes. Jade walked toward her and smiled, placing the baby in her arms.
”I’m sorry she couldn’t be Scottish” Jade laughed, kissing her on the cheek. “Mags this is your grand mother Margaret”
Margaret held the sleeping child and let her tears fall, Gerard walked back in for the third time and dropped some bags on the floor. Seeing his mother he walked over and leant over the chair, kissing her on the cheek.
”What dya think of that ehy mum? Bloody beautiful isn’t she?”
”I think she gets it from me dear” Jade laughed.
Gerard walked round and kissed Jade, pulling her against him. “I think not.”
”She has his eyes” Margaret laughed, looking down as the baby slowly woke up.
Gerard and Jade both turned and looked down, “What mum?”
”Your eyes Gerard she has them look. Here they look blue but in certain lights they look green. Your eyes”
Jade smiled, “I love your eyes Ger”
”She has Jades little nose and her hair”
everyone around smiled as they looked at the thick black mop of hair upon the baby’s head.
Finally the baby was passed to Janice and Margaret stood up, wiping tears from her face and hugged Jade tightly, “Sit you down Jade. You must be exhausted” she fussed, pushing jade into her seat, “There love I’ll get you some coffee.”
The small baby shower continued throughout the afternoon, the gifts people had bought for the baby had both parents speechless. Silver bracelets and silk dresses. Beautiful baby bedding and delightful teddy bears. Margaret lay asleep through most of the party but made her presence known when she was hungry.
”Bloody hell, good set of lungs on her” laughed Doug as Jade took her upstairs to feed her. Gerard had been watching her for the last half an hour and saw she as exhausted, while jade was upstairs he called everyone’s attention and thanked them all for coming.
Carefully he explained how tired Jade looked and thank fully everyone understood.
”God of course how rude of us” Janice laughed, “You guys must want to get yourselves settled in with the baby and everything, Come on Mike we can come back any time”
Slowly everyone left until it was just Gerard and Margaret. Gerard hugged his mother once more and kissed her.
”Love you mum” he whispered, then returned to helping her clean up all the wrapping paper. An hour or so later he crept upstairs to see what Jade was doing.
His heart stopped when he saw them, jade was lying topless on the bed fast asleep. The baby was curled on her chest also asleep and clearly full. Jade had one protective arm around her baby, and was smiling in her sleep. Gerard walked over and gently lifted the baby from her, until the grip tightened and Jades eyes shot open.
”Gerard” she gasped, “Oh god I must have fallen asleep, I’m sorry.”
”Wow, you were asleep and knew when I took her off you”
”She is my baby” Jade laughed, watching him place her in the crib he had selected. It was pinewood with white silk lining. Jade pulled on a silk slip herself and leaned against Gerard when he sat beside her.
”Would you like anything?”
”Just for everything to get back to normal. Is everyone still here?”
”No, they left an hour or so ago. Mums gone to bed, I was waiting downstairs I thought you were coming down again”
”Sorry”
”Don’t be silly, look how about I go and make your favourite hot chocolate and you get in bed?”
”With marshmallows?”
”Of course” he smiled, kissing her cheek. “Only the best for my girls.”
Jade smiled and watched him walk out of the door, curling up in their bed she smiled and closed her eyes, listening to the breathing of her child until he returned.
