Cat lost the baby.
It seemed like such a cold and heartless way to put what had happened. After all, there had been a small death that day that Rebecca had regained her complete freedom. And she had infinitely felt the loss of her friends’ unborn baby to be her own fault.
Becca had been driven home by Patrick, too distraught to drive herself. Once home, she had went to her room and curled on the bed with the bear which had now become a standard for her to sleep. Patrick had stayed with her for a while, feeling helpless as he lay on the bed beside her, arms wrapped tightly around her as she sobbed into his shoulder.
A few days of self-imposed mourning continued on as Rebecca confined herself to her room again, completely believing the loss of her friends’ baby to be her fault. This time however, she wasn’t locked away refusing visitors. It seemed to be completely opposite this time. She clung to Patrick, finding his presence infinitely comforting. He had even managed to convince her mother to allow them to go against her rule of distance between couples, and had spent every night with Rebecca, holding her as she cried herself to sleep, drifting off himself several hours later.
But even the funeral type mourning didn’t last forever, as Rebecca realized that it was probably best to try and pick up the pieces of everything and go along her life as normal as possible. So she had been working on getting everything ready for Ryan and Cat’s wedding, which surprisingly they were adamant not to postpone. She had tried to help Ryan as best as she could, but had been shocked and a little hurt when he had stubbornly refused, saying that it was his business and that he would take care of it. Not wanting to upset him any more than he must already be, she had backed down and left it to him.
The only news she had of Ryan and Cat came from Spencer, and Becca tried to ask him about her friends every time she could. She worried that Cat and Ryan were doing more harm to themselves than good by reacting as they were. Although she knew that she was in no position to judge them, as she didn’t know what it was like. So most of the time when the topic of conversation came around to them, she merely asked about their well-being, and then said nothing else.
About three weeks after the trial ended, Rebecca found herself standing before Ryan, having come to visit Cat. Spencer had finally managed to convince her to go see them, as she hadn’t been by to visit much, as she blamed herself for the baby’s death. Ryan motioned off towards the bedroom where they were staying, looking haggard and more exhausted than she had ever seen him.
“She’s up there.”
Becca nodded and started off towards the bedroom, giving Ryan a quick hug as she walked past him. She couldn’t imagine what he was going through, but knew that she at least wanted him to know that she was still there for them both. She continued on to the bedroom and almost burst into tears at the sight before her. Cat was sitting staring blankly out of the window with her hand on her stomach, where there should have been a baby growing.
“Cat?”
“I wished it not to happen then, not with all that going on. Can't you see, it was me who killed our child all along.”
Rebecca walked over to her friend, shaking her head and managing to keep the tears at bay which were threatening to come sliding down her face seeing the tears in Cat’s eyes. She wrapped her arms around her friend, knowing from personal experience that one of the most comforting things when in a sad and depressed mood was the touch of someone who loves you.
“No Cat, you did no such thing... Things happen, maybe it hadn't been the right time.”
“Then why... did it happen at all?”
Becca shook her head, not knowing the answer to that. It was a tough question that she didn’t think anyone would know the answer. After all, how can you tell a mother that the death of their child was the right thing to happen.
“I'm sorry Cat, that, I cannot answer. What I can say is that life should move on. In a month's time, you are scheduled to marry someone who loves you more than the world. I know you love him just the same....”
“It was our child Becca, how could he ever love me when I failed to do the simplest of tasks, like carrying a child? It doesn't make sense.”
Becca frowned at this, confused by what she had said. Did Cat honestly think that Ryan wouldn’t love her because she had lost the baby? Especially given how stressful the majority of the time she was pregnant had been. It was a little silly to think such a thing.
“Do you have any idea how much sense what you just said had? Because it seems to me you were lacking in the sense department right there, I am sorry.”
Cat shot her a glare that could have pierced steel with its intensity. But Becca knew what Cat was doing, and despite Cat’s protests, stood and continued.
“Becca --- “
“You are looking for excuses Catrianna, and that is not you speaking. The Catrianna I know loves Ryan more than anything, and would never stand for something to keep her from marrying him, ever. Where is this Catrianna I know?”
Becca had hated to be so harsh and blunt with Cat, but that was the only way she knew to get her friend to get out of the rut she was in and see the truth behind the matters. Cat opened her mouth to respond, but only resulted in collapsing in tears. Becca wrapped her arms around her friend in comfort. She merely sat rocking her friend as she sobbed, knowing that it was better to let her cry it all out than to try anything else. Finally Cat seemed to calm enough to speak.
“I ... How can I live on after this?”
She managed a small smile and tilted Cat’s chin up to look in her friend’s eyes. This was something she could at least hope to help her friend with.
“By taking these things one day at a time Cat, a day at a time, with friends by your side.”
Rebecca hugged her friend again, knowing that though it might take a while to get through, they would. Because with people who love you helping, anything is possible.

A/N: I'm putting the author note with mindless drivel here at the bottom on this chapter because I actually love the way this chapter opens. Okay, so apparently my muse came back for a while tonight at least as I have two new chapters up in like maybe a few hours TOPS. The dialog from this chapter is also taken mostly from Cat's story. And I will repeat her reassurances that Ryan and Cat will not have such a heart-wrenching ending overall (and will have more kids). Forgive me the sappy fluffness of this chapter, I've been having a bit of a rough spot and needed some good fluff to add in (along with taking some from Cat's story). Hope you guys are having a great end of summer and hope you guys are enjoying this story that has been a major help in keeping me from going crazy over the summer. *much love and hugs*
