“Boys,” The voice of Dr. Reynolds broke the smiles off our faces. All three of us immediately stopped smiling and looked up at him. Noticing the attention he began to speak. “Now that I have your attention, I would like to introduce Jason to your third roommate. Jason, this is Dereck. Dereck, this is Jason.”
He pushed a small boy out from in back of him, steadying him with a hand on his shoulder, very bony shoulder might I add. So this was Dereck, my third roommate. He was… short and small. The hand on his shoulder looked as if it might crush him. He was wearing a black shirt and a pair of baggy pants. His hair, as I had noticed before, was blond and sticking everywhere in an arrangement of crazy spikes. He seemed normal enough until I got a look at his eyes and I felt my heart nearly come to a halt in fear.
They were burning, so many emotions swirled into the large brown irises of the boy in front of me. His lashes were long and dark which made his eyes all the more terrifying since they were trained right on me.
“It’s nice to meet you Dereck.” I heard myself saying while raising a hand to shake his.
He only stared at the hand.
“Dereck, shake his hand.” Dr. Reynolds voice was stern as he gripped onto the boy’s thin shoulder tightly, so tight in fact that his knuckles were turning white. “Now Dereck!” Now the voice was demanding.
Finally, he took my hand in his own. His hands were small and slender compared to mine. As if a sudden change in his demeanor, Dr. Reynolds smiled at us. “Now, I’m going to let you two get acquainted with one another.” He looked over at the smaller boy. “No more fights Dereck.” He pulled out the chair next to mine, pushing the small boy into it. A nurse came over toward them, placing a breakfast tray in front of him.
The boy nodded at his words, his eyes glaring up at the other man in what anyone could take as defiance. The doctor smiled yet again and walked away, leaving Dereck sitting next to me. Looking over at the boy, I noticed that he was busy shoveling inn the food placed before him, even the oatmeal. I looked back at my two other roommates, noticing that they were both openly staring, Steve with his mouth open in disgust.
“So…” I felt bad for the kid. Here he was getting stared at so openly and all he was doing was eating. “What are you in here for Dereck?”
He stopped eating and looked over at me. Once again I found myself trying to suppress the shiver of fear that ran down my spine. His eyes were so intense I vaguely wondered, in the back of my mind, if he was reading my thoughts.
“Your scared of me.” He stated simply then turned back to his food and began to eat again.
My eyes widened. How the hell did he know? “I am not.” The protest had sprung to my lips even before I knew what I had said.
He swallowed what was in his mouth before talking to me again. “Yes you are. I can see it in your eyes and in your demeanor. You shouldn’t try to lie to people when you are so blatantly obvious.”
“Shut up Dereck.” Steve cut into the conversation before I could even say anything else. “You don’t know what your talking about.”
Dereck merely raised his eye brow, his mysterious eyes looking away from me. “Are you going to protect him, Steve?” He asked the other boy. “Cause they are going to get to him eventually.” Steve’s face had drained of color. Dereck’s eyes once again found me and I was enchanted by the emotions that I found swirling in them. One of them I knew but could not place my finger on what it was. “You better watch out around here, Jason. You never know when they will be coming for you or when they will get you.” He told me, his voice smooth and free from emotions.
I could only watch and ponder his words as he rose from the seat Dr. Reynolds had found for him and walked away with his tray.
“That kid gives me the fuckin creeps.” Dave said after he made sure that Dereck was out of hearinstanstance.
“I don’t like him.” Steve told us. “He never makes any sense when he talks and his eyes fuckin are the scariest thing I have ever seen in my life.”
I could only nod my head at what both of them said, my eyes looking back to the place where Dereck had just occupied. I realized that look in his eyes for I had held the same look when I first met him. It was fear.
A little while after breakfast, Dr. Reynolds had informed me that I was to have my first session with him. Steve and Dave had laughed when I told them but they had also informed me that it was nothing big. That Dr. Reynolds would just talk and ask me questions in his office. I didn’t know what to expect, so I was a little anxious to see what it was like. I never knew it would be so boring.
“So, you remember a little about your dream?” I had been here for almost a half hour already. I don’t know why he was asking me some of these questions.. I had written it all in the small notebook he was currently flipping through. I was in his office, sitting on the comfortable leather chairs while he asked me questions and read through the notebook I had been told to write in. “Tell me a little about it.”
“Well, I have been remembering the same thing every night. There are people fighting and someone screaming in the background.”
He looked at me long and hard. “How do you know that they are fighting?”
“I believe that hitting another person intentionally is considered fighting.”
“Is the person who is getting hit the one who is screaming?”
“I guess. I don’t know.”
“Hmmm.”
I looked away from him, annoyed by the fact that he had to ask me about everything I had written down into the small notebook. His office was large, much larger than our rooms. I wondered vaguely whether or not they cared about the size. His desk was made of cherry wood and he was behind it sitting in one of those large oversized chairs with wheels. The room made me feel uncomfortable since it seemed to be decorated so elaborate. I wondered if taxpayer money paid for half of this stuff in here.
“How does this make you feel, Jason, knowing that your beginning to remember your dreams?”
“Great, I guess. I mean, I’m getting better aren’t I? I will be getting out of here soon.”
He looked at me with sharp eyes, making me wonder if I had answered his question correctly, before asking another question. “How are you getting along with your roommates?”
“Steve and Dave are the best. I am very thankful that I have gotten them as my roommates. I feel as if they are my best friends.”
“What about Dereck?”
What the hell? I had only met the guy a couple hours before and to tell you the truth, I didn’t know what to think of him. He was a mystery, an enigma. He terrified me. “Well, I don’t know him well enough to base an opinion of him.” It seemed like a suitable answer instead of the ‘He scares the hell out of me’ one I wanted to issue.
The doctor smiled, his large owl eyes staring at me blatantly through thick black frames. “Does he scare you?”
Again, I was asking myself what the hell did he mean. I didn’t know if the question was supposed to get the best of me or not but I was not going to let it. “I don’t know him well enough to base an opinion.”
“There are a lot of rumors about this place. I assure you, do not pay attention to them for you will see that not all of them are true.”
He stopped smiling, instead turned back to his papers. “I see that we are done for today. I will see you next week, we can discuss more then.”
I nodded as I got up, feeling his eyes on my back as I walked to the door. He stopped me before I had walked through. “Jason,” I turned back around to look at him, feeling very nervous and wanting nothing more than to bolt as I saw he was not more than three feet away from me. . “Here’s your notebook.”
Taking it in my hand, I thanked him. Then shutting the door, I ran away, trying to put as much distance between the doctor and myself.
