Chapter Five: The Explanation
~*~
"Don't cry," James whispered as he gently rubbed away the tears that were starting to fall down Sirius' face. "Whatever it is, Siri, I'll help you."
Sirius sighed and cried onto James' shoulder for several minutes before lifting his head. "I'm sorry," he mumbled.
"Don't be," James replied. He gently pushed back some loose strands of Sirius' hair and stared into his best friend's sad eyes. "What is it, Siri? What's going on? You know I'll be here for you."
Sirius swallowed and nodded his head. "I know." He looked across the room and stared at the wall. "I don't think I'm really anorexic or anything like that. Well, maybe I am now. I don't know. It all started a few months ago, and-"
"Months? You've been eating like this for months?" James asked, keeping his voice at a whisper.
"Kind of. Not really, I guesnbspnbsp; It sort of happened gradually. You see I kind of James, promise me you're not going to hate me and-"
James looked shocked. "I will never hate you, Sirius. You mean everything to me."
"Do you still think I'm going to leave you after only a few weeks or less together?"
"No," James answered truthfully. "I'm an idiot, remember?"
Sirius smiled through his tears and snuggled up even closer to his best friendbsp;bsp;"I lost my job a few months ago."
"At the Ministry?" James asked in disbelief.
Sirius mumbled, "yes."
"How is that possible, though? They loved you there, Siri! You-"
"My parents," Sirius said as if that explained everything.
"What did they do?" James asked, his voice starting to rise.
"I'm not sure exactly," Sirius mumbled. "I went into work one day, and they fired me fo rea real reason. One of my co-workers owled me later that day and said that he had seen my parents at Min Ministry, though. It has to be them, James! Why can't they fucking leave me alone?"
"I don't know, Siri. But why "
"Why didn't I tell you about it?"
"Yeah. I could have helped you."
"Exactly. I didn't want everyone to start worrying about me, especially you," Sirius said quietly. "I mean, you've already done so much for me, you know? Your parents took me in, and I-"
"Siri, that has nothing to do with it!" James interrupted. "I-"
"I just feel some bloody charity case or something," Sirius explained sadly. "I should have told you, and I'm sorry I didn't, all right?"
James sighed, "You have another job now, though, don't you?"
Sirius snorted. "I got a job at a music store, and a job at a clothing store. I also work at a fruit stand a few days each week."
"The fruit and vegetables," James mumbled.
"Yeah, the lady offered to give me some food in place of paying me. The other two jobs barely pay enough to cover my rent and other bills, so I really can't spend anything on food. I figure having a place to live is the most important thing. The rent will probably go up in a few months, though, so I'm-"
"You're not going to continue living likis,"is," James said softly. "I refuse to let you, Siri. I want you to live with me."
"If everything were fine with my job, then you wouldn't be making this offer."
"On the contrary. I wouldn't care if you were the richest man in the world. I'd still want to live with you or have you live with me."
"I have been trying to find a job, you know. I think my parents have managed to tell almost everyone how horrible I am."
"And everyone believes them without even giving you a chance, Siri? That's absurd!"
Sirius sighed. "I know, but my parents are dangerous people. If they threatened you, you would-"
"Hex them straight to hell. I hate them, Siri."
"You're not the only one," Sirius muttered.
"So, for several months, all you've been eating is fruit and vegetables?"
"Not necessarily," Sirius answered. "I still had some food in my place that I finished up. And for a while, I would buy a few small things. But most of the time, I ate the stuff I got for working at the fruit stand, and other things started to make me feel sick and then I'd throw up half of the time. I don't think my stomach can handle the other stuff much anymore."
"Didn't you eat at Lily and Remus' wedding reception?"
"I had some fruit punch," Sirius said. "And I tried eating some other food, but then I ran off and threw it all up."
"I should have noticed that you were thinner and gods, that you had different working habits and that-"
"No," Sirius interrupted. "I purposely tried to do everything so that you wouldn't notice, James. Because you have already done so much for me! I can't continue to make you do everything for me. I can't always be the hopeless, worthless one. I wanted to hide rom rom you because eventually I will get a job and everything will be fine again."
"How were planning on starting to eat again?" James asked.
Sirius sighed and put his face in his hands. "I don't know, James."
"You're not hopeless and you're not worthless. I hate it when you talk that way about yourself, Siri. You're an amazing person."
"Amazing? Get real, James. I grew up with a family that hated me. &nbswas was horribly immature in school and almost got you and Snape kil &nb I had to bum off of you and your family for how long? And now I can't even keep a job, and I'm probably fucking anorexic! How is that amazing?"
"You are amazing, Sirius, no matter what you say or think. When I look at you, I see a talented person who has managed to overcome so much. True, your stupid family hated you, but that is NOT your fault-it's their fault. They don't know a truly wonderful person when they see one. And maybe you were a little immature in school, but hell, so was I! What you did with Snape was wrong, but the guy's a bastard, and you usually act on impulse. That doesn't make you a bad person, Siri. And you can keep a job, it's your fucking parents who are screwing things up again. You have no idea how much I hate them for messing with you like this! You are the kindest, loyalist person I've ever met, Siri. You would do anything for the people you love, and you're always trying to think of other people. Sometimes, you may over-do it. I mean, really, you shouldn't keep things like this a secret, Siri. I could have helped you! But I'm not angry with you at all. I'm angry with your parents and the stupid people who won't let you work for them. I'm angry that such a wonderful, amazing person had to get such ttentten deal in life. I will make your life better, though, and I promise you that."
Sirius just stared at James and then started crying again. James pressed Sirius' head against his shoulders and slowly started running his fingers through Sirius' raven hair.
"I didn't mean to make you cry again," James whispered.
Sirius looked up at James, "How did I ever get so lucky?" Sirius asked quietly. "I don't deserve you, James. I'm not just crying because I'm upset, I'm crying because of what you said you really do love me, don't you?"
"How could I not?" James asked. "I love you so much, Siri, and I hate to see you hurting like this. Will you move in here, please? Or, if you like your place better, can I move in with you?"
Sirius wiped some tears out of his eyes. "Are you sure?"
James nodded his head.
"Then, can I live here with you?"
"Of course," James replied.
"Are you sure? I mean, I'll let you look at how much money I make if you want to, but honestly, it's barely enough to cover rent and a few bills, and that's it."
"Of course I'm sure! You'll spend the night here tonight and then-"
"But I work tomorrow," Sirius complained tiredly.
James shook his head. "You have to get better first, Siri. You're going to wear yourself out completely if you continue to work."
Sirius sighed. "Can I keep one of the jobs?"
James kissed Sirius' forehead. "We'll see. I really want you to get better."
Sirius numbly nodded his head. "James?"
"Yes?"
"Can we put up my Zeppelin poster here?"
James just started laughing and pulled Sirius into a tight embrace. "Of course," he mumbled.
