Chapter Five: Coming Home.
Jessie sat staring out of the plane window. The last four days in Hawaii had been quiet. Jessi and Chris hadn't really spoken, Lance had continued to argue with both of them, and Justin had tried his best to stay away as much as he could. She sighed leaning her head back on the seat closing her eyes. Chris laid his magazine down looking over at h "Yo "You doing ok?"
Jessi opened her eyes turning her tow toward him. "Yeah, i'm fine. How much longer?"
Chris shrugged looking around the plane. He spotted Justin and Lance across the isle and back two rows.
"Hey Jup, how much longer?"
Justin looked over at Lance. "How much longer scoop?"
Lance looked at his watch. "About an hour and a half." He dropped his arm back to his lap and smirked. "She about to throw up yet?"
Chris looked back at Lance his jaw clenched. He opened his mouth to speak and Jessi grabbed him by his wrist.
"Don't. I've had enough of the both of you. My first trip to Hawaii and it was horrible. I hate to fly so I don't need the two of you making this worse."
He looked back at Lance one last time and turned back around picking up his magazine then laid it back down sighing.
"Jessi can we talk please?"
She folded her arms across her chest and looked at him. "What do you want to talk about?"
He turned sideways in his seat clearing his throat. "Look this stuff with Nichole. Maybe I was wrong for the way I acted that first night at the dance. But her daddy can get us hooked up at some big events and I didn't need to get on his bad side by cutting down his daughter. I was a little disappointed in you too, you know. You've dealt with this business as long as we have. You know what it's like. There was nothing going on with me and Nichole, you know better than that. How long do you plan on being pissed at me?"
Jessi dropped her hands to her lap playing with her head phones. "I know how your life works Chris. I'm not pissed at you. I'm just hurt, that's all. I forgot this trip was all about business and I thought coming to surprise you we would be able to spend time together. That was my mistake and I know better. "
She looked up at him taking a deep breath. "I think maybe with everything going on with you, me, and Lance that it's just got all of us wound tight. Everybody needs a breather."
Chris squinted his eyes looking at her. "What are you talking about Jess?"
She leaned her head back on the seat and took a deep breath. "I think maybe we do need a little vacation apart. I need some air Chris. I can't breath. I feel like i'm being smothered with all the fighting with you and Lance."
Chris shook his head growing angry. "So what. I spend sometime doing business and suddenly i've fucked around and you want to break up with me? We had a fucking enterauge with us . You were there every time Jess. You're the one who kept your distance."
Jessi looked at Chris her brow furrowed. "Keep it down Chris. I followed the rules and kept my distance like I was supposed to . And for your information I wasn't there every time, I was only there twice. Try to notice once in awhile."
Chris slammed his hand down on the arm rest. "NOTICE? Hell I do notice Jessi and you're actions speak louder than words."
Jessi turned sideways in her eat facing him. "My actions? What the hell are you insinuating?"
Chris laughed sarcastically. "Oh hell. Jessi just say it. Do you want Lance? Is that why you are starting this shit?"
Lance leaned across Justin looking down the isle. "Hey, you two shut up up there."
Chris slammed his body back in his seat facing forward. "Forget it Jessi. You want a breather, you got it."
Jessi turned looking out the window letting silence fall over them. She sighed wearily looking at him.
"I don't want to fight. I love you Chris. I'm just asking for some time. Kendal is in Memphis so when we get home i'm gonna fly there for a few days. That's all I want."
Chris' jaw clenched as he stared straight ahead. "I don't care Jess. Do what you want to do. I'm tired of competition."
Jessi closed her eyes leaning her head back against the seat exhaling loudly.
JC picked them up from the airport dropping Chris and Lance off at their homes. He pulled into Justin and Jessi's drive and everyone climbed out of the car carrying bags inside. Justin grabbed his mail from the table in the foyer and walked toward the stairs. He stopped turning to look at JC and Jessi.
"I'm gonna shower and hit the clubs, any body want to join?"
Jessi and JC both shook their heads and he ran up the stairs to shower and change. Jessi threw all the suitcases into the laundry room and sat on the couch leaning her head back sighing. JC sat down on the couch next to her and patted her knee.
"Tell you what. I'm gonna order some pizza, you shower and get comfy and we're gonna have a best friends night. You have a lot hesplainin to do Lucy." JC laughed in his best Ricky Ricardo voice.
Jessi smiled and folded her arms across her chest. "You know what, I like that idea. I need someone to talk to right now who is going to be neutral."
JC kissed her forehead and stood up from the couch. "Go shower and i'll get the pizza ordered."
Jessi nodded stood up stretching as she walked up the stairs.
Jessi stepped out of the shower and pulled on her silk boxers and a tank top. She sat down on the edge of the bed and picked up the phone dialing her mothers number. She smiled as paul answered the phone.
"Hey dad. How are you doing?"
Paul sat down on the couch turning down the t.v. "I'm fine Jess. You having a good time in Hawaii?"
Jessi laughed rolling her eyes. "Yeah right. Hawaii sucked and i'm back in Florida now. But I need to talk to momma. Is she aroun Pau Paul raised his eyebrow speaking slowly. "Nooo. Didn't she call you."
Jessi's brow furrowed. "No. Is something wrong? Is Kendal ok?"
Paul laughed. "Yes honey. Kendal is fine. Your mom and Kendal are still in Mississippi tho. They are having such a good time with Diane and Jim that they decided to stay a few more days."
Jessi sighed placing her hand on her chest. "God dad. Don't scare me like that. Listen. If you talk to mom before I do let her know i'm flying home tomorrow. Ok?"
Paul sighed into the phone. "What's wrong Jess?"
She stood up walking to her dresser and picking up a picture of her and Chris. "Nothing is wrong. I need to get off the phone tho. JC is waiting on me. I just wanted to let mom know not to make plans on flying to Florida. I'm coming there. And no more questions. I've got to go and I love you."
She laughed quickly hanging up the phone as she heard him yelling her name in a warning tone. She took a deep breath placing the picture back and turning off the light as she went down the stairs.
JC turned looking at her as she sat down next to him on the couch. He grabbed a piece of pizza handing it to her.
"I was wondering when you were going to come down. The pizza was getting cold. But I know you like it that way. Oh, Justin said Mandy called with your confirmation number for you flight tomorrow. It's stuck on the fridge."
He took a bite of his pizza looking at her out of the corner of his eye. "Wanna tell me what's going on?"
Jessi leaned back on the couch taking a bite of her pizza. "Well, the short version is Hawaii was horrible, I hate Lance, and I don't know if Chris and I have broken up or not."
She smiled looking at him. "That pretty much covers it."
JC grabbed another piece of pizza leaning back next to her. "Ooookkkk. Now can I have the long version so I can understand this somehow?"
Jessi threw her pizza back into the box sighing heavily. "I got to Hawaii and Lance was an ass, as always. The first night there we went to a party they were throwing for the tournament players at this club and Chris wants to cuddle up with the sponsors little whore of a daughter."
JC covered his mouth as he choked on his pizza. He quickly sat up taking a drink of his coke then leaned back on the couch. "Are you serious?"
Jessi nodded picking her pizza back up. "I love Chris. I really do. But damn it Josh I can't take the fighting between Chris and Lance anymore. It's really starting to get to me. And our first night there we went to a party and I got jelous of the sponsors daughter because she wouldn't keep her hands off of Chris and he followed her around the whole time like a puppy."
JC nodded propping his feet up on the table. "Did you confront Chris with this?"
Jessi folded her arms across her chest and huffed. "Yes. And Chris said he was disappointed in me. I should know he wouldn't cheat on me and he was only conducting buisiness. I threw a damn jelouse fit Josh. That's not like me. And now I don't even know if we are together or not."
Josh stretched his his arm across the back of the couch. "Why do you say that?"
Jessi turned throwing her legs across JC's. "Because on the plane I simply said that I wanted a breather. I wanted to fly to Memphis to get Kendal myself so I have some time to myself and think about all of this. He exploded and said fine, if I wanted a breather I just got it. Hell you saw him when he got out of the car. He wouldn't even look at me."
JC softly ran his fingers up and down Jessi's leg. "Well, you really want me to tell you what I think?"
Jessi nodded leaning her head onto JC's arm. "You are my best friend and I value your opinion. Please. Help me out here.."
JC sighed rubbing the back of her head gently, her head still resting on his arm.
"I think you need to do some soul searching. You are a beautiful person Jessi and I don't doubt for a minute you love Chris very much, but there's something there for Lance. I can see it."
Jessi laughed. "Where are you looking to see all of that? Lance and I can't stand to be in the same room with each other. There is no emotion there Josh."
JC looked into her eyes and tapped his finger gently against her chest. "Listen to your heart Jessi. You'd be surprised what you find. I don't want to see Lance or Chris hurt, but I do want to see you happy and right now you're not happy. I think all this that happened this week with Chris happened for a reason."
Jessi raised her head from his arm and looked down toying with the hem of her shirt.
"I just want what is best for Kendal."
JC lifted her chin up forcing her to look at him. "Just because Chris has been there from day one doesn't mean it's best for Kendal, or for you for that matter. I'm not trying to take anyone's side here, but I don't think Lance was given a chance from the begining. You were both young. Nobody even really knows what happened between the two of you. Neither one of you will even talk about it. Maybe that is why Lance is so hostile with you and Chris. You know that's not him Jess."
Jessi closed her eyes leaning her forehead against JC's chest. He laughed and wrapped his arms around her. "It's not that tough. You already now the answer. Just take the time to listen."
Jessi leaned back looking at JC. "Someone's gonna get hurt. I don't want that Josh."
JC smiled placing his hand on her cheek and rubbing smallclescles with his thumb.
"Someone is already hurt no matter what. You just need to stop it now. This time away is going to be good for you."
Jessi sighed as she nodded. "You're right. Thanks Josh. I can always count on you."
He smiled kissing her forehead.
"Now. What do you say we watch a movie?"
Jessi stood up walking to the entertainment center when she heard the front door open. Lance walked into the den laying a camera and cell phone down on the table.
"Those belong to Justin. It got mixed up with my stuff."
He sat down in the recliner grabbing a piece of pizza.
"What are ya'll up to?"
JC looked at him shaking his head and laughing. Jessi placed her hands on her hips looking at him.
"Gee Lance, come in and make yourself at home."
He nodded taking a bite of his pizza.
"So where is your lover boy at? Drive home was kinda tense don't ya think?"
Jessi smiled sarcastically. "Gee what's this? Foreplay again cause i'm really not in the mood."
Lance laughed reaching for her coke and taking a drink.
"You know i'm a little confused. Are you two still together or have you broken up? Neither of you have been quite clear on that one."
Jessi threw her hands into the air and stormed off into the kitchen. JC looked over at Lance giving him a scolding look.
"Why do you do that?"
Lance looked at him shrugging. "Don't know what you mean."
Jessi stood at the kitchen counter scrubbing it working out her anger when the phone rang. She grabbed the phone from the counter hitting the button and yelling 'hello'.
Lynn's voice sounded urgent as she spoke.
"Thank God. Jessi have you seen Lance? I have been trying to call him and no one knows where he is."
Jessi's brow furrowed as she walked to the kitchen door looking into the den.
"Calm down momma. Lance is here. What's wrong?"
Lance and JC looked up watching her.
Lynn sighed into the phone. "No Jessi. Jim has had a heart attack. We just got to the hospital. I need Lance to get here as soon as possible."
Jessi gasped raising her fingers to her mouth. "Oh God mom how bad?"
Jessi could hear Kendal in the background as Lynn spoke.
"We don't know yet. Just get Lance here. Diane need him."
Jessi whispered 'Ok' as she heard Kendal crying. "Momma i'm coming with him. Tell Kendal i'll be there soon."
She quickly hup thp the phone dropping it to the table and making her way slowly across the room.
Lance eyes locked on Jessi's as he sliced the pizza sauce from his finger. JC leaned forward watching Jessi.
"Jess, what's going on?"
Jessi looked at JC from the corner of her eye as she pushed the pizza boxed back on the coffee table sitting down in front of Lance. She turned to JC and sighed.
"I need you to call Mandy and get a flight to Mississippi for me and Lance A.S.A.P."
JC nodded quickly standing and grabbing the phone as he left the room. Lance narrowed his eyes as he looked at Jessi.
"What's wrong?"
Jessi took a deep breath kneeling down in front of him. "Lance your dad has had a heart attack. That was momma on the phone. They just got to the hospital with him so they don't really know anything yet."
Lance quickly stood up running his hands thru his hair as he paced the floor. Jessi stood up placing her hand on his arm.
"Lance......."
JC walked back to the den handing Jessi a piece of paper. "You've got four hours before you fly out. Both of you better get packed quickly. You've got to be at the airport early for check in."
Lance frantically searched his pockets for his keys. JC walked putting his arm around Lance.
"Come on man. I'll take you home and we'll come back to get Jessi."
Lance looked at him slowly nodding and JC lead him out to the car¹
