Chapter Five: The Smoke Ring
Late that night, there was a knock at the back door to the shop. First, it was a little too soft and no one heard it. The person at the door knocked louder then, making Eve jump off of the couch in Karen’s apartment. She looked around the room, a little startled at first. She soon got up and went down the stairs in the back. Eve could find Karen later. The door was unlocked and opened to find Orlando in a winter jacket, pajama pants, and giant snow boots.
“May I come in?” The cold showed his breath as he asked. Eve nodded and moved out of the way, allowing him access to the upstairs apartment.
“What’re you doing back here?” She closed the door behind them.
“I wanted to ask Karen something….. and I needed to hide out for a little while longer.” He grinned and looked around the apartment.
“I don’t know where she is, hun. Check the roof or something.” She said before he could ask of Karen’s location.
“The roof?”
“She goes up there to think every so often. Go ahead. It’s not like she’ll bite your head off for doing so.” She shrugged and laid down on the couch, “I’m going back to bed.”
Orlando found his way up to the roof after searching for a good fifteen minutes. The roof was a large square area, covered in snow. He found Karen’s footprints embedded in the snow and hoped to find her as well. On the opposite side of the roof, he saw her and trudged over in the snow. A curl of smoke rose above her now.
“A smoker?” He stood beside her, joking a little bit.
She turned quickly at his words and smiled, “Only every so often. I’m not a heavy smoker at all. A pack a month or two. I could quit if I really wanted to. Why? Is that such a bad thing?” She took one last drag before putting it out in the snow.
“No. I never pictured you being a smoker. That’s all.” She blew out the smoke as he said this, and nodded.
“Well, I’ve had a lot on my mine lately. I guess the stress has gotten to me.” She looked up at the stars.
“Stress? Over what?”
She sighed and turned to him, “This week is what me and Eve consider Black Week.” He raised a questioning eyebrow, “Don’t ask….. just don’t ask.”
“Alright, I won’t. But, let’s go back inside now. It’s too chilly out here.” Orlando shivered and walked back inside. Karen followed and closed the window they used to get up.
“Are you planning to spend the night?” She asked. He nodded and tugged at his pajama pants. She sighed, “Ok. I’ll take the floor.”
“Nonsense! We can share the mattress, right?” He protested.
She paused as a slight blush took over her face. She rubbed the mark on her neck, “Uhhh….. alright, I guess.”
Orlando grinned and jumped into bed. She laughed and looked out the window again before even approaching the bed. He pulled up the blankets and Karen climbed in with a sigh. The blankets were pulled back up over them. Karen faced him and blushed as he smiled at her. Orlando began to wonder why she was blushing so much. She closed her eyes as he put his arm over her and drew her close.
“Good night, Karen. And whatever happens during the next few days, I will be there to aid you in anyway possible.” He whispered to her. Karen nodded, already falling asleep.
Orlando grinned again as she finally fell asleep and was soon out like a light. Karen dreamed peacefully that night, for once not plagued by awful memories. Orlando seemed to have that effect on everyone.

Kate paced within her large New York apartment. The windows were slightly fogged from the heat, but she could still see the skyline through the glass. It had been just about twenty-nine hours since she had last seen Orlando. She was terrified for him. Kate had no idea what to do now. They had gotten into their first fight and it was the longest one she had ever had with anyone.
The thought of losing Orlando was terrifying to her. He had always been there for her in her times of need. Kate could even see herself growing old with the man she loved. But now, he was mad at her. And he had a good reason to be. Throughout their long relationship, they never once talked about past experiences with other people. However, Orlando had met up with one of his ex-girls at a party and Kate became jealous and annoyed.
So, she started asking too many questions when he would get home late. A little paranoia took over her brain for a while. Orlando found this to be utterly horrible and discovered that she no longer trusted him. The fact that he had spent the night at Karen’s house the other evening, had just made the situation ten times worse.
“Where could he be!?” She asked herself as she stomped out of the room.

The sun shone through the windows and woke Karen up. She drowsily sat up on the blow-up mattress and looked around the room. The rays that were shining through the blinds were weak ones and they left a pale yellow shine lingering in the room. She stood up and noticed that Eve was still sleeping. Sora mewed at her feet and she scooped him up and took him into the kitchen.
She decided to make a cup of coffee for Eve.
“Did you guys have fun last night?” Eve walked in.
“We didn’t do anything, so you can get your mind out of the gutter.” She spoke, not turning to meet the blonde’s gaze.
Eve eyed the coffee brewing, “For me?” She pointed at the kettle. Karen nodded, “Thanks sweetie!”
“It was nothing.” She plainly said.
The shop owner sat down at the small table across from the sink in the kitchen. She sighed and sipped at the tea she made for herself. The reality of Black Week kept hitting her heart and making everything seem like a haze now. A tear fell into the mug as Karen broke down; something she so wanted to do for months.
Eve was instantly at her side, “Shh….. Its alright, Karen.” She pulled the sobbing girl into her arms, “I’m here for you, Karen. And I won’t let anything bad happen to you ever. I’ll always be here for you. I promise.”
The sound of Karen’s sobs was what woke Orlando. He looked at the clock and saw that it read eight thirty-three. The actor swiftly got up and tip-toed to the kitchen to see what was happening. He didn’t see very much though. The second Orlando peered in, the scene was over and Karen was drying her tears. He shrugged and walked in.
“Did I miss something?”
“Nah. Just talk of old times.” Eve smiled his way.
The blonde walked to the sink to wash their mugs. He looked at Karen and saw her wipe another tear away. She sniffed and held her fingers to her lips, apparently thinking of something.
“Are you sure?” He asked.
“Just drop it.” Karen muttered and took the keys to open the shop.
“Hey! Wait!” Orlando tried to stop her.
“Just leave her to herself, Orli.” Eve stopped him from going anywhere.
“What’s going on, Eve!?” He turned to meet her gaze.
“It’s the beginning of Black Week.”
