*My deep apologies for this taking so long. With the holidays and then being called to substitute teach the first two weeks of school I could not get to finishing the next chapter. I'm not too happy with it, but my writing skills are rusty from not getting used. Later, I may do more work on this chapter to fix it. It won't be such a long wait for the next chapter, I promise!
Chapter Five
The camera tracked the movement of the bodies as they writhed slowly, recording every nuance of the hypnotic dance for posterity. It loved the way one body glided along the other. The thin sheet veiled the lower bodies drawing eyes to the hidden limbs. The soft hitch of a sigh painted a picture of rapture. As if alive, it watched in awe, its intrusive eye zooming in on hands caressing up broad shoulders, lips opening onto lips, even the tiny glimpse of a tongue as it slipped in to meet its mate. Unblinking, it continued to record the scene.
Suddenly, the bodies under the sheet stiffened, nails digging into the tight skin of arms, sounds resembling pain gasping into the air. In a moment it was over and the forms under the sheet collapsed in feigned exhaustion.
“Cut!” Carl’s voice sliced through the silence, bolting out of his chair. “Cut, cut, cut! Cut and print!”
A smattering of laughter and applause broke out around the set as a tousled head lifted and grinned sheepishly at the director. Gingerly, Hayden moved off Natalie and rolled over to sit up. The director beamed at the two in bed and clasped his hands together, bathing Natalie with an approving smile.
“Not that is exactly what I’ve been looking for!” He leaned down and hugged the slight frame now securely tucked with the sheet curtained around her chest. “Where have you been hiding that performance? Wonderful, you two, just astronomically wonderful! Three takes. That’s all it took! It’s perfect! Obviously, working together over the weekend has paid off in spades! I just knew you two could pull it off! The chemistry between you two might have melted the camera. If it did, there goes the scene!” At his humor, everyone laughed, his good mood infectious. Clapping his hands together he ordered, “Now everyone get ready for the next scene. You two, get to wardrobe.” Already imagining the upcoming scene, he strode away barking orders to the crew.
Hayden knew Natalie was avoiding his gaze and let it pass, sliding into the robe handed to him and then out of bed. Before he took a step, he stilled in thought, then pivoted back to Natalie.
“Are you all right?” He asked, his voice pitched for her ears only.
Natalie’s head popped up, a bright, teasing smile pinned to her lips. Hayden watched her performance through shrewd eyes.
“I’m fine,” she chirped, laughing, “but it’s not every day I start out having hot sex in front of fifty people!”
The quip caused a wave of laughter as she wrapped herself in her robe under the sheet. Jumping off the bed she pulled the sash tight and fixed Hayden with an elfin grin. “I don’t know about you but I’m all worn out.”
Waggling her fingers at him from the safe distance on the other side of the bed, she spun and walked away. The urge to chase after her almost overtook him, but common sense caught up with it and held it still. Playing along, he shook his head and stretched, unaware of the many interested pairs of female eyes studying him and followed her path. It would be a while before they would be ready for the next scene, a milder one compared to this.
Under the constant surveillance of her assistant, and not wanting to create a suspicious scene, Natalie begged to go to the bathroom. As soon as she reached her dressing room, she closeted herself and leaned heavily against the door, snatching deep breaths of air. Heart pounding, she leaned her hands on the sink and studied her wide-eyed reflection in the mirror. Outside, nothing appeared out of order, but her circuitry sparked with overloaded surges of adrenaline. Once again, she thanked God for that blessed time of the month that had shown up this morning protecting her from any repeats of the weekend.
Until next weekend, a sly voice within taunted.
Natalie curled her lips over her teeth and bit down. It had taken all her strength to concentrate on Carl’s direction as Hayden arranged his body over hers in a very clinical manner. Part of her wanted to hit him for not reacting, but the other part almost collapsed with relief. If he could remain this untouched, surely she could, too. Still, her belly rolled at the friction of his skin against hers, the now familiar scent of him invading her senses. The touch of his fingers on her face followed by his mouth sent shivers of warning to her toes. The intensity of concentration and control had taken its toll. Now she was depleted and weak, her only desire to curl up on the couch in her dressing room and sleep. She had gone through the motions refusing to remember the weekend, but unable to stop it in the movement of her body. It followed his lead far too willingly and only the whispered directions from Carl kept her from making a total fool of herself.
Stupid, stupid stupid! How did you let this happen? His whole body’s imprinted on you, she scowled at her reflection. He’s your lover and he knows it. He knows you want him. But how? Hell, I didn’t even know it myself!
Lover. She turned the word over and over in her mind examining it like an archeologist would a rare, strange object for the millionth time since its discovery.
“Lover,” she whispered to the mirror, testing the forbidden word aloud on her tongue, tasting its content and watching the wild sparkle burst into her brown eyes. “Hayden is my lover.”
There. She’d said it out loud for the first time. A wave of nerves broke out into goose bumps across her arms, her stomach diving again in a fit of nervous, anguished excitement. Even now she could feel his breath tickling her ear as it had the other night when he had whispered things to her while buried deep inside her, moving with a pagan rhythm that ensnared her. Shaking hands covered her heated cheeks as she remembered the words, not full sentences, just mutterings really, but her insides had melted into a deep pool of carnal need. The low timbre of his voice had sizzled every conscious thought until she had writhed under him like a snake.
Drawing her hands away, she stared at her reddened face.
“What am I going to do?” She whispered to herself in despair. Even now, she wanted to see him just to make her stomach do that thrilling lurch.
Maybe if I stay out of his way I’ll get over this, she reasoned. Maybe some distance will help cool me down. Think of Michael. A grimace pinched her face. Oh, yeah, that will help. You have never slept with him and now that is an impossibility! There is no way he is going to compare to this!
Accept it, the evil voice jeered. Hayden is your lover and intends to keep it that way.
“Shut up!” She ground to her reflection.
The knock at the door startled Natalie and she jumped.
“Natalie? Are you ok? They need you in wardrobe,” her assistant said.
“I’m coming,” she answered and gripped the sink’s edge as she dragged in a deep breath.
Now there’s a word you should be familiar with, her evil voice sneered.
Natalie’s stomach rolled at the thought as she opened the door and stepped back into the world.
At lunch, Hayden sat toying with his food, his thoughts elsewhere. Natalie had gotten her lunch and scurried to her trailer like a frightened mouse. A humorless smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. It was obvious she was doing everything she could to avoid him. Not that he hadn’t expected it. Her favorite way of dealing with unwanted situations was to ice out the perpetrator. A champ at deception, she could hold out until the offending person gave in and slumped away. He had spent enough time around her to study her quirks and inhibitions. Her character he knew well, better than she realized. Well, she was in there with a contender that wasn’t going to back down.
Hayden tilted his head back and focused on the ceiling. Even with his body completely exhausted and spent from the events of the weekend, his nerves still prickled with leftover exhilaration. Physically his body was not going to cope with another round of that until it could recover, but his mind could certainly savor the memory. He could still see her resistance and capitulation, her hatred of herself for giving in evident, until she got lost in the currents of seduction. Oh, yeah, he knew her all right. Right now she was kicking herself for letting down her guard and losing control. Already, she had managed to get the word out in wardrobe that she had just started her period. He shrugged to himself and bit into his apple. He’d just wait her out. Michael would not be back until the following weekend.
Michael. Hayden’s lips tightened, a dark gleam clouding his eyes. Her talisman. He would be her excuse for running away since she had too much time to dwell on things before Saturday. Well, he had news for her. The weekend would be here before she knew it. Five long days of mental and physical frustration that would build and build and build. They were lovers now and there was no way he was going to give that up. No way.
An insidious thought snaked through his mind dripping poisonous drops of doubt. Had she experienced this with Michael? Was it this way for her all the time? How many times had Michael been on the receiving end when that restrained passion had broken free?
Visions of her limbs wrapped around Michael’s, her face closed in ecstasy, her mouth moaning the unbearable excitement it could not contain flooded his mind. Try as he might, the picture wouldn’t budge, repeating the scene in relentless cycles. Jealousy clogged his throat, its viselike grip vicious and firm. Anger fired in his belly even as the voice of reason asserted itself assuring him that their experience was way out of her realm. After all, it had been way out of his, hadn’t it?
Titters of laughter shocked him back to the present and he looked across at a cluster of women staring at him with teasing amusement. Embarrassment threatened, but the aftershock of anger held it back.
“Earth to Hayden,” one of them called out as the others laughed again.
“We wondered where you went,” another teased. “You were certainly looking rather dark and fierce. Very sexy.”
“Yeah, Hayden, where were you?” Still another asked.
Hayden forced a grin and shrugged as he pushed back his chair and stood. Before he could take another bite of his apple, he fixed his eyes on them. “And wouldn’t you just like to know,” his low voice taunted. With that he bit into the apple and strolled off, uncaring that all their eyes were pinned to his backside.
“Wow,” one of them breathed, her eyes wide, “what I wouldn’t give to know what lay hidden behind that look!”
A murmured chorus of agreement rose around her before they all began hammering out their theories on just who Hayden really was behind those tempting eyes.
Friday. Natalie perched on the edge of the couch, hands clasped to cover their shaking. The week had flashed by at first, but by yesterday life had grounded to a halt. Minutes had become hours, stretching her nerves until they were close to snapping. She should have known it would happen. Every time Hayden looked at her, a thousand jolts zapped her, mainly centering on that wretched line that connected her breasts to her sex. Behind backs that look turned menacing, threatening her with retribution for avoiding him whenever she could, promising her that it was only a matter of time.
Tears pricked at her eyes. But it wouldn’t take much to catch her, she wailed to herself. At the mere thought of him her body switched on begging her for another fix of him. She had survived three days before her body had turned traitor on her. Now, he was stalking her, content to wait her out, circling her with ever tightening circles. Reduced to hiding in her trailer, she trembled from the wavering control and the desire to give in.
If only Michael were coming this weekend! Then she could hide a little longer. But he wasn’t coming, and the predator still waited in the shadows. The conflicting emotions nearly cleaved her in two. Part of her dreaded what had happened and refused to give in, but another part of her sung with eagerness, craving her lover to drive into her with that savage mastery that shattered her into a thousand gleaming lights. Natalie moaned and buried her head in her hands.
The knock at the door jackknifed her, snapping her neck in the process. A hand went to the burning spot and rubbed in agitated circles. Calm down, she soothed, it’s just your assistant.
“Come in,” she called out, hoping her assistant had gotten the information of just how much longer they’d be working today. The sooner she got out of there the better.
The door opened and he stepped in. A lump strangled her throat and she bolted to her feet. Dressed in black from his tee shirt to his boots, Hayden advanced like a tiger ready for the kill. Blue eyes focused on her as he stopped inches away, leaving her no room for retreat, the couch blocking her escape.
“I thought you were Tammy,” Natalie barely managed to squeak, drawing her petite frame up in a show of defiance.
Hayden’s eyes flickered over her form at the show of no surrender and a slight grin lifted one corner of his mouth.
“Are you avoiding me?” He cut to the chase, the tingle in his loins warning him to stay cool.
“What?” Natalie looked at him as if he’d lost his sanity. “Of course not. Why would I avoid you?”
The words were out before she could stop them. The lie was so obvious even she cringed at them. Frantically, she searched for a better defense.
“Don’t stand so close to me,” she ordered, tilting her chin. “I can’t breathe.”
“Really?” He cocked an eyebrow at her, analyzing her pink cheeks and sparkling eyes. “Why?”
Natalie’s brows drew down. “I just can’t breathe, that’s all.”
“We are rehearsing tomorrow,” Hayden announced, eyes watchful. When Natalie’s popped wide with fear, he smiled. “Carl is so taken by how well we did from last week’s studying together that he thinks we should do it more often. So, are you coming over or do you want me to come to your place?”
At his smug grin, Natalie’s eyes narrowed. “Neither. I am not studying with you.”
“Oh, yes you are,” he countered.
“Oh, no I’m not,” she fumed, pushing him back with a hand. Free to move, she slid sideways and escaped a few feet away, rounding on him with a livid glare. “It is not going to happen again! I don’t want it to!”
Hayden advanced, eyeing her backward steps with dark amusement. “Yes, you do, Natalie. I told you. I’m your lover and you’d better get used to it.”
“I don’t want you, Hayden, don’t you see?” Natalie fixed him with a cold stare, crossing her arms.
Hayden stopped short of her and gazed at her for long moments, dropping his eyes to her crossed arms. Reaching out, he pried her arms apart and studied the hard tips of her breasts pushing in wanton appeal against her shirt. His large hands cupped the gentle weight, lightly drawing his thumbs over the traitorous nubs.
Electricity surged through her forcing her to squeeze her thighs together. Her head fell back a moment, her eyes closing in response before opening back up and meeting knowing eyes.
“Stop that!” Natalie slapped his hands away. “You have no right to touch me!”
A grimace of anger pinched Hayden’s mouth and he yanked her against him. “I have every right and you know it. You are NOT going to run away from this. If I didn’t know you wanted me, it would be different, but I know it and that’s all there is to it.”
His head lowered, blocking out the world. Expecting the onslaught, Natalie tensed. But it never came. If he had ground his lips onto hers and forced his tongue into her mouth she would have had all the ammunition she needed to fend him off. But, he didn’t. Instead, a hand threaded through her hair holding her still without hurting and his mouth descended to the silken skin of her neck. Thrown off guard, her body jerked at the heady pressure as he bit then sucked at the delicate flesh. He worked his way up to her jaw and across her cheek until his lips brushed hers, dragging slowly over the sensitive area.
A moan whimpered in the back of her throat as he continued to lightly brush her lips until she began to reach for a deeper connection. All thought ceased under the frustration of needing more. Natalie lifted her head to press her mouth to his, but the fingers in her hair tightened to hold her still. Hayden continued his teasing and her heart stuttered at the increasingly taut strain on her nerves. Her breathing fractured as her body tried to get closer, but he held her just far enough away to forbid complete contact.
Somewhere deep, the old Natalie lifted her head and growled, commanding her to not put up with being denied what she wanted. Arms lifted wrapping around Hayden’s neck, using him as leverage to pull herself close enough. At the first sure touch of lips, the kiss broke loose, the heat threatening to incinerate everything in its path. Slanting her head, she opened her mouth taking his tongue into hers with no room for argument. Hayden grunted in surprise, but pulled her close giving her rein to control the kiss. One hand slid under her shirt and up her warm skin until it found her breast, his thumb circling the pebbled nipple. Natalie moaned and ground her hips into his feeling the hard evidence of his desire straining against his jeans. One arm unwound from his neck and a moment later the pressure of her hand rubbing him almost broke him. For a few tense moments, Hayden endured the wicked delight, reveling in her bid for more, but the knowledge that her pesky assistant could walk in at any moment allowed him to barely hang on. Gently he withdrew his hand and found hers, coaxing it back to his neck. Natalie allowed it and continued to kiss him, gradually cooling the ardor until all that was left were tiny, succulent caresses. Both breathing heavily, they broke the kiss and stared at one another.
“Tomorrow,” Hayden promised, his voice raspy and hoarse.
All Natalie could do was nod and step away from him on shaky legs. The moment the door closed behind him she dropped to a chair, her body still trembling and hot. One hand pushed damp strands of hair from her face as the word echoed through her dazed mind.
Tomorrow.
