A pale light began to seep through the opaque curtains hanging in front of the doors leading to Adrienne’s balcony. It crawled along the floor, up the bed and eventually came to rest atop Adrienne’s closed eyes. “Urrggmmrrpphhh” she mumbled as she threw the down comforter over her face. Adrienne was not one you would consider a morning person. In fact she hated mornings with a fiery passion. However she had gotten into the habit of running in the mornings, mostly because in Florida, the early mornings were much cooler than the days or evenings…and the sunrises on the beach weren’t too shabby either. Just as she began to slip back into slumber, her alarm clock went off. A quick, strong slam and many expletives later, the alarm was on the floor and Adrienne was reluctantly out of bed. She sleepily plopped herself into her desk chair and gave her computer mouse a jiggle. This was her normal routine: destroy the alarm clock, check her email and various message boards and blogs, and run…with the exception of whenever Nicole had deemed it appropriate to disrupt that routine.
hmmm Nicole hasn’t replied yet….
Adrienne furrowed her brow and yawned. “Whatever…I forgot about the time change…plus she is probably out doing something.” She said to herself as she changed into her running clothes. After taking a quick second to walk out on the balcony to check the temperature, she threw on the jacket to her suit and made her way outside. It was rather peaceful. There weren’t many people out and the air was crisp…slightly cool even. She stretched thoroughly before setting her hands on her hips and looked from right to left.
I guess it would help if I knew the area….hmph, I can’t get lost just going around the block, as mundane as that sounds…
She bit her lip, put on her headphones, and began to run. She wasn’t sure why she liked running so much considering she usually hated even the thought of exercising. She supposed that it gave her time to think, sort out the things in her life that needed sorting. She sighed as she thought of yesterday. It was such a bizarre day she thought as she remember the email that she had written Nicole:
Nicole…
My god…it was the day from hell. I met my cousin, that I didn’t even know I had…of course he already hates me because I’m only half-Korean *rolls eyes* But that doesn’t even top his friend. The kid…he’s psychotic…he followed me into the city!!! I don’t know how he did it but he managed to track me down as I was shopping. I think that he is already picking out our children’s names >_< The humiliation just keeps on coming. In my attempts to evade his amorous attacks, I accidentally barged in on a guy in a dressing room -_-;; At least he was good looking. I didn’t really want to even admit that to myself because he rubbed me the wrong way at first. He conned me into buying him dinner and the like because I had seen him practically naked (it’s not like I’ve never seen a guy in his boxers…remember that time your brother walked out of the bathroom…ok never mind I know you hate it when I bring that incident up…but you’re brother is delicious…(you can smack me later). Anyway, so he promised not to tell his friends, who he was shopping with, about that little tidbit, but of course he did. And then…haha and then, this girl that is stalking him tracks us all down at a restaurant and was practically throwing herself at him. He told her he was on a DATE….WITH ME?! Though I guess it made us even because he did chase away Jun (my cousin’s friend)…did I mention that Yoochun did that? (Yoochun is boxer boy) So anyway, she left, and since we were even, I went to pay for my part of the meal, and he wouldn’t let me. So I guess he isn’t so ungentlemanly. He did show genuine concern for me when I had told him about my father (came up in talk when his friends found out that I was from America, so I had to give them a sum up of my life) His friends are really nice, Changmin is really cute and shy, but really considerate. Junsu seems kind of goofy but has a really nice smile and seems really pleasant. Jae…well he is kinda girly actually, but he’s really nice. Pretty in a way…like all of those pop stars that you see from Asia. And who’s left? Oh yea, Yunho, he was really nice….I think that you would really like him. ^_^ he’s right up your ally. So the evening didn’t end on a completely terrible note, except when I got home and my cousin got in my way. But I told him that his face made me physically ill and then promptly slammed the door in it…so hopefully he will stay out of my way. That about sums it up…and I’m exhausted and slightly buzzed so I’m going to sleep, hope to talk to you later, lylas
Adrienne hadn’t realized the amount of time that had passed by. The streets were becoming more and more crowded and she didn’t pop out of her thoughts until her playlist returned to the first song. Shaking her head she noticed that she had been running for a good hour and a half.
I suppose that that’s enough for now, I’m kinda hungry anyway
Making her way back to her house she noticed a male figure standing in front of the gate to the house, looking as if he was having a heated argument with the intercom. Flustered, he ran his fingers through his hair, which Adrienne noticed was on the longer side and a nice shade of brown….
hey that kind of looks like….Yoochun?
As she got closer she managed to pick up on the conversation:
“Look!!! I’m a friend of Min’s she forgot her shopping bags last night and I just want to return them!” He yelled as he slammed his fist onto the metal box of the intercom. “I’m sorry sir, “a voice replied on the other end, “But I can’t let you in unless Miss Min confirms it, and she’s not available to question about the matter, please come back later.” Yoochun emitted a rather unpleasant gargle of anger before he kicked the metal gate keeping him from completing his task at hand.
“You might not want to do that, one you might hurt yourself…two they might call the police and have you detained.” Adrienne said as she causally walked up behind him. Yoochun turned in surprised and then rubbed his toe gingerly. “I’m fine, I just wanted to return these to you. I didn’t think you would be out so early…guess I was wrong,” he replied, handing the bags to Adrienne. “Thanks, I didn’t even realize that I had forgotten them. And as much as I hate getting up early, I run in the mornings.” She said as she sifted through her bags, making sure everything was there and that her…umm unmentionables hadn’t been unwrapped. The last thing she wanted was to be spending time with a pervert. “You didn’t have to drop them off, you could have called me and I would have come to get them.” She said as she punched in the code to the front gate. Yoochun rubbed the back of his neck, “It’s ok, I got your address and stuff from Junsu, and you only live a few blocks from me, so it wasn’t much trouble.” Adrienne nodded and looked at the gate that had finally finished opening. Before she realized what she was saying, she asked, “Hey, have you had breakfast yet? I was kind of hungry and if you are too, then it could be like a thank you for returning my bags.” She tugged on the end of her hair as she waited for an answer. Yoochun smiled, “No I’ve not eaten yet, but I’m a guy, I’m always up for food. Here let me take those.” He said as he took the bags from Adrienne’s hands. Not questioning his actions she turned and fell in step beside him.
They made a bit of small talk before finally getting to the front door, which was opened for her by the butler. Adrienne nodded in thanks and removed her shoes and jogging jacket. “Wow…this place is impressive….” Yoochun stated as he peered down the hallway, obviously curious of his surroundings. “Yeah, I suppose…it’s a bit overwhelming for me, to tell you the truth. But I’m not planning on being here long.” She replied as she motioned for him to follow her to the kitchen.
“Not going to be here long? Don’t tell me that you are going back to America after the events of yesterday.” Yoochun asked, raising an eyebrow. Adrienne chuckled, “Don’t flatter yourself, no, once I start college, I want to live on my own, so I’m planning to look for an apartment close to the university.” She continued through the swinging doors of the kitchen and went to the sink to wash her hands. Yoochun followed suit, handing her the soap that she had been searching for at the moment. “You are not going to live in a dorm? That’s what most people do.” he inquired.
Taking the soap from his hands, Adrienne noticed how easily their motions flowed together. Shrugging it off, she continued to answer his question, “Ha, no you forget that I grew up in the US, we have serious personal space issues. If I was stuck in an eight by eight box with another human being, I would commit homicide.” She turned off the water and opened the fridge, taking out various ingredients that she could find that would go good in an omelet. “You like omelets right?” she asked with her head still inside the fridge.
Yoochun hadn’t heard the inquiry because he was to busy admiring the sight in front of him. Now he wasn’t one to get all twittery about a woman in the kitchen, but this was the first time that he had taken notice of the girl in front of him. Her running suit held close to her curves and showed of her body in a very becoming way. Thankfully she didn’t look like a lot of the girls running around…anorexic like.
“Hello, earth to Yoochun” Adrienne said, waving her hand in front of Yoochun’s eyes. “Huh…oh, sorry, I was just thinking…sorry what did you say?” Adrienne sighed as she filled a pot full of water to make tea. “Never mind, you are a guy; I assume that you will eat anything.” Yoochun grunted and took a seat on a stool next to Adrienne.
You fool, don’t get distracted by a girl like her…she’s difficult, as yesterday proved. Stick to quiet ones. he thought to himself as he watched Adrienne crack some eggs into a bowl. “Is there anything I can help with?” he finally asked, figuring it would help him get his mind of the offending thoughts creeping in about how cute she looked in an apron.
“Um…sure, the teapot is whistling if you would like to finish making the tea. The tea should be in that blue tin next to the toaster.
As he busied himself with the tea, Adrienne returned to her current task. She chopped up some bell peppers and onions, along with some ham that looked like the remains of last night’s dinner, which she had conveniently skipped out on. Giving the eggs in the pan a little jiggle, she flipped the omelet with ease.
“Hey, that’s pretty impressive, ever thought of being a chef?” Yoochun asked, “Where are your tea cups?” Adrienne tossed the vegetables and ham in another pan before answering, “In the cabinet on your right. And yes I have thought of being a chef, even owning my own restaurant someday.”
“Well, if you ever decide to go through with it, give me a call. I’m planning on being a business major at university.” He said handing her a steaming cup of tea.
“I’m not sure that I would want to go into business with someone who barely passed their entrance exams...” Adrienne smirked as she took a sip of her tea.
mmm I have to admit he makes a good pot of tea
After finally assembling the omelets, Adrienne handed the plates to Yoochun, “Hold on, I’m going to grab a pitcher of juice.” She said as she made her way back to the fridge. After reemerging with a pitcher of apple juice and two glasses, she motioned for him to follow her.
“Why do I get the feeling that I always follow you when I’m around you.” He asked, adjusting the plates in his hands. Adrienne smiled as she opened a set of French doors which led to a small courtyard surrounded by a large garden. “Because, I’m slowly turning you into my slave boy, get used to it.” She smirked as she set down the juice and glasses on a small glass table.
After they settled in, Adrienne took a deep breath. “Ahhh I love the smell of gardens, especially in the morning. It smells so fresh and clean.” Yoochun nodded after taking a bite of his omelet. “Yeah, sometimes it’s nice to have a bit of nature in the middle of a large city like this,” he replied as he poured a glass of juice for himself and Adrienne. She nodded in thanks as she took a bit of her own breakfast. She leaned back in her chair and closed her eyes, soaking in the gentle morning sun and the faint singing of the birds in the bushes behind her.
Yoochun stopped shoveling food in his mouth long enough to appreciate how serene she looked. Beneath the haughty exterior, she was quite peaceful and deep at times. He finally remembered to chew and swallow once Adrienne had cracked her eyes open to catch him looking at her.
Hehehe…busted sucker
She smiled to herself. A girl liked being appreciated for he beauty every once and a while, no matter what they might say otherwise. Adrienne’s stomach growled a bit which caused her to briefly blush and continue eating.
They both finished their breakfast in a silence that was surprisingly comfortable, but it was suddenly broken by Joo-Eun sticking her head out of the doors. “Miss, is there anything that I could possible get for you?” she asked as she began clearing the dishes from the table “Oh um, well not for me…Yoochun?”
Yoochun shook his head, “No thank you, I’m fine.” Joo-Eun bowed, “Very well, oh…Min, your mother said that your car should be arriving within the next couple of days.” With that, she bowed again and disappeared back into the house. Adrienne had perked up at the news. She missed her car, as stupid as it sounds. Humming to herself, she rested her hands behind her head before looking back at Yoochun, who seemed to be lost in his own little world. Shrugging, she went back to resting.
Unfortunately it wasn’t a very long rest as a very loud and offending clang was heard from the other side of the gardens. Adrienne shifted and her face became increasingly irritated. Yoochun was also brought out of his reverie by the loud clang, and his eyes rested on Adrienne, who seemed to be…well not happy. He followed her gaze and his eyes rested on a tall figure, handsome, even for a guy to admit. He automatically felt a pang of jealousy, though not knowing why, but didn’t waste time asking his own mind any questions.
“Who is that?” He asked, still trying to ignore the urge of jealousy that was still pushing at him. Adrienne sighed as her eyes fell onto the figure of her cousin. His wispy black hair covered most of his face as his head slightly bowed, though she could still see a very distinctive smirk on his lips. “That would be my cousin, Ha-Jung.” Adrienne finally replied as she sat up in her chair. Just the presence of him made her body tense in the most unpleasant of ways.
“Oh…” Yoochun breathed, the jealous slowly ebbing way. He took a moment to question why he was even jealous at all, though didn’t get much time to ponder it.
“Hello Yoochun, what, pray tell brings you here?” Ha-Jung asked, leaning forward on the table. His dark eyes danced mischievously as he flicked his gaze from Yoochun to Adrienne, and then back again. Adrienne scowled as she crossed her arms across her chest, showing her obvious displeasure for her dear cousin being anywhere near her or her acquaintances.
“How do you know my name?” Yoochun inquired, looking at the man suspiciously. I don’t like this feeling I get from him…he’s not a good person…
“Oh, I’m wounded that you would say such a thing!” he exclaimed with a slight hint of sarcasm, “We went to high school together, in fact, we graduated together. Though I suppose that you never gave me much attention considering you were much higher on the social scale than I was.” Ha-Jung scowled. Even though he was handsome, his personality was rather vile. He wasn’t athletic or charismatic like Yoochun or any of Yoochun’s friends. Sure he had gained his on little fan girl following, but nothing compared to the packs that followed Yoochun around.
“Oh, I’m sorry I just don’t recognize you. Again, my apologies.” He bowed slightly, though it was not enough to be considered polite, since he didn’t want to loose contact with Ha-Jung’s eyes. “If you must know, I befriended Min yesterday while she was in the city. It was a peculiar beginning but, I have to admit, resulted in a happy ending.” He gave her a reassuring smile before reconnecting his gaze with her cousin’s.
“Well, how fortunate for her. “ Ha-Jung quipped and leaned in to whisper into Adrienne’s ear, “One night and you are already having breakfast together. They say that American girls move fast…but I guess I had no clue.” He chuckled softly before straightening himself.
Adrienne did her best to restrain the urge to physically hurt him…a lot. She composed herself and rose to meet his eyes the best she could. She lowered her voice slightly before continuing, “My personal business is absolutely none of yours. I would appreciate it if you kept your distance. It’s painfully obvious that we don’t and will never get along. You stay out of my way and I will stay out of yours.” She finished, still holding his steely gaze with her own.
He leaned in again and brushed her neck slightly with his fingers, taking note of the audible shifting coming from Yoochun’s direction. “Why would I do that, when I do so love to get under your skin…” Finally, he stepped away from her and turned to Yoochun, who had grown increasingly agitated not knowing what was being said. After observing the reaction of Adrienne’s body from her cousin’s touch, it hadn’t taken much for him to conclude that this guy was bad news.
“Yoochun, if you will please excuse me, I have some work to attend to. I’m sure that we will be seeing much of each other.” With a slight bow, he walked to the other end of the gardens and turned the corner, disappearing from both Adrienne and Yoochun’s view.
Adrienne’s body was still humming with anger has Yoochun rose from his chair and approached her, He rested his hands on her arms and felt her tremble slightly. Rubbing his hands up and down her arms, he lowered his eyes to her’s, “Are you ok? You seem a bit unsettled by that interaction. I have to say that I’m a bit unsettled myself. Has he always treated you like that?”
“Well, I didn’t even know that he existed until yesterday, but I’ve not liked him from the moment I met him, and vice versa.” She sighed as she glanced up at Yoochun. “Thank you for joining me for breakfast, I appreciated your company.” She smiled slightly, stepping away from Yoochun and his hands, which hadn’t been removed from her arms.
Noticing the brief moment of awkwardness, he cleared his throat and shoved his hands in his pockets to avoid any more trouble.
“It was nothing,” he replied nonchalantly, “It was delicious, you should consider that career in cooking,” he added, shifting slightly.
Adrienne nodded, “Well, I don’t want to take up any more of your time, I’m sure you have places to go, people to see. Don’t let me keep you,” she said as she walked towards the french doors and stepped inside the house.
“Uh not really, but I was curious. Me and the guys have plans to go out to night, maybe shoot some pool or catch a movie. Jae and Junsu are both bringing their girlfriends. I thought…maybe you would like to come along. It would give you a chance to meet somo more people, some girls this time,” he gave her a nervous smile as he rubbed the back of his head.
Adrienne returned his smile and nodded, “That sounds great actually, I would love to join you guys,” she replied as she walked Yoochun to the door.
“Great! I will give you a call before I come get you. I don’t really feel like fighting with the intercom again. He chuckled as he slipped into his shoes and stepped onto the porch. “I will see ya around…6:30?” he said, twisting back and forth slightly.
Adrienne smiled, “That sounds great, see you then.”
Adrienne closed the door and smiled to herself.
Why do I feel so damn giddy?!
She mentally slapped herself just before sneaking a peak out of the window to watch Yoochun walk through the gate. She sighed and continued up the stairs and back to her room. She had a long afternoon of deciding what to wear ahead of her.
Yoochun whistled to himself and took a slight notice to the spring in his step.
ehh…stop acting like a girl….
He scowled to himself before going back to whistling and thinking that he had a long afternoon of deciding what to wear.
