Part Five – The Voice of Glory
Toshiya sat in the darkened room, his eyes narrowed harshly. Where was that little blonde? Why wasn’t he in here? Why wasn’t he home? He never went anywhere after work! Or rather, he wouldn’t usually go out somewhere. Toshiya sank further into the armchair he’d flopped himself down into to wait for his prey. Tonight was the night he would present himself to him. I must ensnare him before Die can touch him . . . if not, all is lost in my plans for his future.
On those thoughts, Toshiya hears voices outside of the apartment’s front door. Two voices. One is Kyo’s. . . The other, he doesn’t recognize, but it makes him snarl lowly. Did the little blonde have a lover? No! He would have seen a lover before, he was sure of that much. Either way, Toshiya’s eyes narrowed further, his hands holding one another lightly by the fingers as his elbows rested on the arms of the chair. His elegant, long legs are crossed, left knee over right. . Foot tapping in the air impatiently. He rubs the skirt of his gown gently, feeling the material on his fingertips. A momentary flicker of his eyes down to his legs to make sure they are displayed pleasingly in how he sits. Perfect. A smile flickers across his face before he cast his eyes upwards again. Toshiya wanted this to be perfect. He stares at the bedroom door, knowing that soon, Kyo would pass through it. With his bad mortal eyesight, it would take him a few moments to notice that he wasn’t alone. Or, Kyo would simply turn on the light, and Toshiya would make flight to the area of the room in which he wasn’t facing, using speed to evade the mortal’s vision before he chose to show himself fully. It would ruin the effect of the skirt he’d chosen, but it would add to the game some. . Wouldn’t it? Yes! Oh, he loved games! Decisions, decisions . . .
And then, the voices outside grow to whispers, and Toshiya starts in the chair, his eyes burning into the wooden plank of the shut bedroom door. Suddenly, Kyo’s voice just stops, and there seems to be a glimmer of the youth remaining, a slumbering glimmer . . . like he’d suddenly fallen asleep in the hallway outside of his apartment. Toshiya’s eyes go wide. Very few things could force another being to just fall asleep where one stands. But soon, he has other, more pressing concerns. . And those are all for himself. He feels something inside the room with him, senses it invading the surroundings. He stands, angry and snarling slightly, his long, glassy nails slowly extending like a cat’s claws. This sense was not good. Not good at all. Because it was too innocent, too pure. Something wasn’t right here. That was for damned sure.
What do you want, creature of darkness? Comes a whisper in Toshiya’s mind. He’d been looking around the room, beginning to creep around, shoulders hitched, stalking like a great jungle cat, following the feel of the sense he’d gotten. And now, it was speaking to him. In his mind. . . and that damned sense of goodness filled his mind, making him want to scream with pain. You will leave my charge alone, you and all your kith and kin. He is not for your kind. . . he is ours, and you will not interfere with his soul. A sharp hiss fills Toshiya’s brain, and he drops to his knees, screaming, hands pressed over his ears to shut out the sound, and then he’s clawing at himself, his shrill sounds getting higher and higher, fighting the invasion from outside as he draws blood from his own skin.
Get out of my head! Toshiya screams out to the other being, pushing at it with all of his might, trying to get rid of the sensations. The other being laughs at him, the cackling sound echoing off the walls of Kyo’s bedroom. Toshiya feels the eyes looking at him, and he stops clawing in order to look up, almost seeing the spectral form of a familiar face.
“You!” The vampire hisses, showing his fangs, his body bent most ungracefully on the floor, in a pool of his own blood. The other being had identified its form, and that’s what Toshiya had recognized. So, his little interest had ‘holy’ protection? Oh, this was rich, rich indeed! And it made him want the man even more. He laughs wickedly for a moment, then the hissing comes back into his mind, bringing the crushing, sharp pain with it once more. . like a vice around his head. Toshiya claws at his face again, at the air, trying to remove the invisible force, screaming. He falls to the floor, kicking and struggling, ever clawing. “GET OFF OF ME!” The presence inside of him continues to use it’s force, and Toshiya has no choice but to flee. Being the youngest of his Sire’s brood was sometimes so inconvenient. He found himself wrapping shadows around his form, and then flickering through them in transport. A miraculous, writhing figure for no one to see, vanishing into the nighttime outside the open window. He’s escaped the vice like grip on his mind, and left his prey to the one protecting him.

Outside of Kyo’s front door, Shinya stands with the youth leaning against him. One arm wrapped around his friend, holding him close so that Kyo wouldn’t fall over, the other arm is held out, it’s hand stretched wide, fingers splayed, palm facing the youth’s front door. His eyes are glowing like molten gold, his hair is flying around him as if a wild wind had kicked up. Behind him is the faint outline of great, white wings. The outline is spread wide and the feathers of the wings are brought to points over the ground. . like dagger blades. Inside, he feels that the vampire has left. A smirk crosses his pretty features, but he does not come out of his power for the time being. One that young was easy to frighten off. The two elder ones he’d felt and seen that same evening would not be so fast to dispose of. Besides, he knew that Toshiya would come back, even if not that evening. Shinya finally puts his hand down, then he looks at Kyo with a little sigh. He had not wanted to make the youth pass out, but when Kyo had argued with his friend that he wanted to go inside rather than take the walk to Shinya’s apartment . . . well, there wasn’t much to be done. He wasn’t about to let him enter the apartment with a vampire literally sitting in wait for him. Once he’d passed over the threshold, Shinya would have been locked outside, unable to help him. So he’d kept Kyo with him. A simple action, and a great counter for what the vampire could possibly have in store for the young man. And now, he touches the youth’s face gently, and slowly, he leans down, turning Kyo’s unconscious body in his arms so that he could pick him up fully. Once he has the youth securely in his arms, he looks at the door once more . . . and it slowly opens for him. The passage soon shows Kyo’s living room, and when it does, Shinya carries Kyo through the doorway, into his home. As the door closes, the area around him slowly comes back to life . . . as Shinya had stopped time for a few moments in that place, so no one would come and see a battle of spirits taking place over a small blonde man. This world was no longer a place to be understanding of miracles . . . and really, had it ever been such a place? He wasn’t really sure anymore.

Die sits alone at the booth, playing lightly with a toothpick on the side of a wineglass. Wine he’d ordered to stare at for a few hours while he sat in contemplation. Something about Kyo’s companion was getting to him, and not in a pleasant way. He makes a face, slightly discouraged. He was numb to things like sensations about other beings. And there was something about that femme he couldn’t put his finger on . . . So it only brought up one conclusion. That friend definitely was not human. He lets the toothpick slide into the wine.
“A little blonde blow you off?” A smirking voice breaks his attention from the glass of alcohol, and he looks up in time to see his sire settling across the booth’s table from him, smirk on the hawk like features.
“No.” Die smirks in return; highly annoyed to see the elder vampire in this place. Great, just what he need. “He didn’t ‘blow me off’ at all. I just surprised him, that’s all.”
“Excuses, Die.” Kaoru purred, arms crossing on the table, hands clasped together. A smile has replaced the smirk, and he leans forward a little bit towards the redhead. “You know I’m right. You came on too strong, and he blew you off . . . You showed what you were somehow, and he ran. It’s the same old thing with you.”
“What are you doing here, Kaoru?” Die asks with a sigh, shaking his head. “You swore that you wouldn’t cross onto my territory again. Remember that I’m too old to be followed around like I’m a fledgling. Why don’t you track Toshiya? He’s young enough to shadow.”
Kaoru hitches an eyebrow and sits up straight, the annoyance clearly in his eyes. “He’s not as interesting as you are.” Comes the purred response. “Besides, he’s in your ‘territory’ as well, you know . . . “
“Yes, I know, and if he doesn’t leave soon, you’re going to be short one brood member.” Die smiles pleasantly enough, and Kaoru glowers at him.
“Don’t be cruel to him, he looks up to you . . .”
“Stop defending him. You know as well as I do that he’s testing my limits. Much as you are now. And Kyo is none of your business.” Die growls in response, cutting off his sire in mid sentence. He closes his mouth and looks away after his last sentence, the smile on Kaoru’s face enough to cow him.
“I can test you limits Die, I made you. And I can easily unmake you if I so chose to do.” Kaoru lets the threat hang in the air, making Die look up at him with a bit of unease. He smiles at that, then he decides to land the little bit of information on him that he knew of the delicious little mortal it seemed his eldest had a huge crush on. “Ah, so the little blonde has a name, does he? I’ll remember it. And you do know, darling Die, that his tall, feminine friend . . .” Kaoru paused for dramatic effect.
“He’s an Angel, that friend. An Angel.”
