Chapter 5
Angela watched as Johnny Depp walked up her path for the second time in the past 24 hours. She had to wonder what on earth he wanted. He hadn’t left anything here, at least not to her knowledge, and there was no way he could have broken down again in exactly the same place… so what did that leave? She wondered whether he was here out of pity, maybe he’d felt sorry for her and decided she would be his new charity case. She couldn’t think of any other reason why he’d bother to come back, she wasn’t rich, she wasn’t beautiful and she certainly wasn’t good company, at least in her own opinion anyway. So, charity case it was then? Fuck, that was all she needed, whatever she might be, a charity case she was not.
“Damn him,” she murmured. “Why can’t he just leave me in peace?” She had thought for a moment that he might be different, but no, it seemed that when faced with her he ended up with the same misguided sense of pity and obligation to Be Nice To The Poor Girl as everyone else. It didn’t help, it never had. It just made her more frustrated with herself.
Well, why ever he was here, she’d have to let him in. Even if she ignored him, after that pathetic little scene yesterday he would know she was home and she had no desire to humiliate herself further. She’d just have to face him. God, but she didn’t want to.
She sighed in resignation and braced herself, anticipating the knock at the door and swearing blindly that at the slightest hint of pity she would send him away, movie star or not.

Johnny walked up the path nervously. The cottage looked exactly the same as it had the last time he’d been there, but considering that the last time he’d been there was yesterday it wasn’t all that surprising. He had no idea what he was going to say to Angela; he wondered for a moment if he should have bought flowers. People were always saying you could say it with flowers. Maybe it was actually true. He thought briefly about picking some out of the cottage garden, but then realised that whatever the flowers were saying probably wouldn’t be nearly as impressive if they had been stolen from your own garden and presented to you as if they were a gift. Those flowers would probably say something along the lines of I Am An Idiot And A Thief, Not To Mention Too Cheap To Actually Buy You Flowers.
So, flowers were out at this point. He knocked on the door hesitantly and was surprised when it began to open almost immediately. Well, he supposed he’d just have to fall back on his vocabulary then.
“Hello, umm…” He mentally cursed himself. Say something good, say something good, say something good….
“Hi.” She looked out at him almost warily. “Can I help you?”
“I’m back.” Dammit! Well, this was going fabulously. “What I mean to say…” He smiled. “Is that I umm like you (How. Juvenile.) and I wondered if maybe you’d like to, I don’t know, go out with me sometime? For dinner! Or coffee?” Very smooth, he thought to himself, how could anyone refuse that? He rolled his eyes. He definitely should’ve picked some flowers.

Angela was momentarily put out by what he was saying. To say she hadn’t expected Johnny Depp to turn up on her doorstep and ask her out on a date would be an understatement. She really hadn’t expected Johnny Depp to turn up on her doorstep and ask her out on a date. He actually seemed genuine about it too, which was probably the most unbelievable thing of all. Of course, she reminded herself, he IS an actor.
How the fuck was she supposed to react to something like this? Johnny Depp wasn’t supposed to just turn up on peoples’ doorsteps and ask them out on dates, especially not her. Things like this didn’t happen to her. And she had to wonder again about his reasons for doing this. Charity Case. Pity. Poor Girl. She knew she was probably exaggerating his motivations, but she also knew she wasn’t willing to take the chance. Couldn’t take the chance. She couldn’t bear he idea that he thought about her like that or even worse… that this was some kind of joke. Which would be just typical. Deep down she knew she’d love to accept, go out on a date with him and think nothing of it, but she didn’t dare. She wasn’t that person and never would be.
So she did the only thing she could; she mustered up all the courage she had and smiled at him in what she hoped was a neutral, if not cold manner.
“I really don’t think that would be a good idea, Mr Depp. But thanks for the offer.” She closed the door quickly before she could change her mind and leaned against it, wondering is she’d just made a huge mistake and cursing herself for not having the guts to take a chance on him. God knew she wasn’t going to find happiness sitting here alone day after day. Although at least here, alone, she didn’t have to deal with the rest of the world.
No matter how much she wanted to.
