Not Your Fault
Dr.White gave Adie a reassuring smile:
“It is quite possible he will walk again. But it will require a lot of work, training and counseling.”
“But it’s possible, right?” Tears were falling down Adie’s face like raindrops down a foggy window.
“Yes, it is possible.”
“What’s the percentage?”
“Well,” the doctor was surprised with her scientific attitude “I can’t tell you the exact percentage yet, but it’s highly possible his physically ability to walk will be reestablished after a course of training. But the main problem in similar cases seems to be the emotional barrier that the patient subconsciously creates in their mind. They are able to walk, but they don’t let themselves.”
“Oh”
“I will give you all the necessary references, so you can be informed on what exactly is required for Mr. Armstrong’s rehabilitation”
Adie nodded.
“Can I see him?”
“Yes”
Mike watched Adrienne disappear behind the door of Billie’s hospital room. This felt so weird. If this happened 3 days ago or even less – it would be him walking into that room first. It would be Mike getting all the information from the doctor. Why did they call her and not me? She must be his emergency number or something. But why not me? We only broke up 2 days ago. Maybe he knew this would happen? Maybe…maybe he tried to kill himself?!
Mike didn’t realize he was crying. Tre gave him a Kleenex and silently lead him to the bench.
“He’ll be fine” Tre reassured Mike wrapping his arm around his friend’s shoulders.
“It’s my fault!” Mike began crying harder.
“Bullshit. It’s an accident, how could that possibly be your fault?”
“I don’t know it is. What if it wasn’t an accident, what if he did this because of me?”
“No! Billie wouldn’t. It was an accident”
“How do you know?”
“I just do, okay?” Well, actually, I don’t.
“Well, even if it’s an accident – it’s still my fault. He wouldn’t be walking there today if not for our break up. Or he would be more attentive. How can one get run over here, dude, there are no fucking cars!”
“Shut up, Mike! This is not your fault! Shit happens, life is not fair.”
Mike kept crying harder and harder and Tre could feel a tear roll down his own face.
Adie sat down next to Billie’s bed and he smiled at her.
“Hey”
“Hey” her voice was shaking.
“How are you today?” Billie tried to cheer her up, it hurt him to see her face covered in tears.
“Billie…you…” she looked at his legs.
“I know, I can’t walk”
“They told you?”
Billie paused for a second.
“Yes” They didn’t, but he knew.
She began crying again.
“Hey, don’t cry. Please, don’t.” He’s already cried enough today, he didn’t want Adie’s tears to provoke another breakdown for him.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay. Just don’t cry, okay?” He took her hand in his.
“Okay” She looked into his eyes with pain.
“Adie…”
“Yeah”
“Please, tell Mike it wasn’t a suicide attempt.”
Adrienne looked a little shocked. She didn’t think about this. Maybe it didn’t matter to her how exactly the accident happened. Maybe she just somehow knew Billie didn’t try to kill himself. Not like it wasn’t something he could do – in fact he’s always been quite suicidal and this wasn’t completely out of the question. But somehow she knew this wasn’t the case here, not this time. Not like this.
“Okay” She replied “Do you want to see him?”
Billie turned away to hide a tear rolling down his face:
“No” He said trying to prevent his voice from shaking “Maybe later”
“Okay”
“Just tell him it’s not his fault”
Billie’s doctor entered the room.
“Mr. Armstrong needs rest” he said in a calm voice, implying that Adie should leave.
“I’ll be outside” she gave Billie a kiss on the forehead.
“Okay”
She walked out of the room and watched a nurse walk through the doorway carrying something in a small tray. Adrienne turned her head towards the bench and saw Tre hugging Mike. Both were crying.
