June 24th 2004. Barkham Manor, Buckinghamshire.
‘That’s it, you are done for, I’m really going to kick the shit out of you now’ said Kim as she circled her opponent and hoped from one foot to another, working out the best place to aim her kick.
‘Just try it and ill put you straight on your back’ he said, ducking to dodge a roundhouse kick aimed at his shoulder.
‘Oooh, is that a promise?’ Kim said in a sultry voice as she side stepped a kick.
‘You bet, I’ve always liked being on top’ he said as he eyed how amazing her legs looked in her tight fitting sweat pants.
‘Too bad that’s my favourite position too’ said Kim before she spun around and laid the perfect kick into her opponents left side, followed by another two to his right side and knocking him clean off his feet into the mat.
‘I believe I win this round darling’ Said Kim as she crouched down and gave Gerry a little pat on the cheek with her hand.
‘There’s always going to be a next time though, so watch your back baby’ said Gerry as he got up off the floor.
‘Watch my back or ill be on it is that?’ Asked Kim as her and Gerry began to do some stretches to cool down after their sparring session.
‘Yes, most definitely’ said Gerry as he turned and playfully slapped her on the ass.
Kim was glad that things seemed back to normal again. At least now she could engage in harmless flirting with Gerry and not jump 4 feet in the air, unless she was aiming a kick that was. Kim liked to spar with Gerry, fighting someone twice the size of her that also made no allowances for the fact that she was a woman improved her skills no end. And to be fair if Gerry had have not fought Kim back with the aggression she showed him he would have found himself flat on his back several other times that morning too. Although he was a big man in stature and strength, Kim was fast and strong and had been trained very well, and she could take down someone of Gerry’s size with relative ease.
Kim had worked with the fighting trainer, Tom Cheng on her previous role as a warrior for the fantasy film ‘Battle Ready’ and he had commented at the time that if she got bored of acting there would be a successful career as a champion kick boxer ahead of her, should she choose to take it. Although Kim’s punches where not as strong as he would have liked, her kicks where like taking body blows from an iron rod. Kim had attended kick boxing classes whenever she had time to since then, and had improved even more since Tom had worked with her last.
‘You are looking good girlie’ he had said as he approached Kim and Gerry. Even though he knew Tom was commenting on her kicking, Gerry was inclined to agree, even with her hair tied up in a high ponytail and no make up on; Kim still looked as luminous as ever to Gerry.
‘I’ve been practising!’ said Kim proudly as the three all sat down on one of the thick training mats.
‘I can see, you’ve put on more bulk in muscle and your roundhouse kicks are getting better, I take it you have been doing the balancing exercises I showed you? Asked Tom as he re tied his thick long mane of jet black hair securely back into its ponytail fixing.
‘I have indeed, am I your star pupil or what?’ said Kim with a little chuckle.
‘Indeed you are honey’ said Tom before he told them they where dismissed from practice for the next two hours, and to come back at 3pm for another session.
The post production of the film had commenced at one of the main locations of the film, the beautiful mansion that was Barkham Manor, set right in the middle of the idyllic countryside of Buckinghamshire. It had been decided that all of the fight training would take place there too as the Manor had huge spacious rooms perfect for setting up a training environment. They also did all of the technical training there too because all of the main character actors had to be made familiar to the hi tech gadgets they would be using in the film, and they decided it would be so much easier for cast, crew and technical supervisors alike to have everything going on in one place.
After they had both departed to their rooms to take showers and change, Gerry and Kim met up again and decided to take a walk around the vast grounds of Barkham with the hour and a half of freedom they had left before they would be back throwing kicks and punches at each other, and then onto learning about all things technical and gadget-like for the remainder of the day.
As they walked, taking in the beautiful scenery, Kim felt an ease she hadn’t felt for a long time. Being in Gerry’s company since the incident in New York and ‘button-gate’ (as she had comically named her faux pas) had made her feel a little nervy. She had found herself watching what she was saying in his company, and stumbling over her words on occasion, but now, as she walked along by his side with her arm linked through his, she felt wonderful. She couldn’t explain it but something just felt different between them. It was like something had clicked and she could just find herself relaxing around him again, but this time everything was even more comfortable than it had been before, she felt as friends they where growing closer.
‘I have something to ask you’ said Gerry suddenly after they had been silent for some time.
‘Ask away buddy’ said Kim as she looked up at him.
‘Well, you know the phantom opens here in two weeks? I’d really like it if you would come to the premier with me’ said Gerry, dropping his eyes away from hers in a way that made him look very cute and very shy.
‘I’d be delighted to’ said Kim with a big smile as she hugged his arm.
‘Good’ said Gerry simply as he and Kim continued their walk around the vast lake set in the grounds of Barkham.
She knew it was only a small thing, but Kim could feel her insides fizzing with happiness that he had asked her to go to the premier with him.
He knew it was only a small thing, but Gerry felt himself glow with happiness at the thought of having Kim on his arm on the night, and he couldn’t wait.
‘So? How’s it going then? Are you having fun?’ Asked Rosie through a mouthful of crisps as she chatted on the phone from America where she was on location.
‘Oh this place is amazing! The guy that owns it is such a nice person, him and his family. He told us the other day to treat it like it was our home while we are here, if we want to go riding all we have to do is go down to the stables and the stable staff will sort us out with some horses, we can join in on the clay pigeon shooting and grouse shoots if we wish, obviously ill only be firing at the clay pigeons though, we can use the swimming pools and the gym, its great! Said Kim as she flopped backwards on her huge four poster bed in her beautiful room.
‘Well I was referring to how things where with Gerry, but thanks for telling me about all that too’ giggled Rosie.
‘It’s fine, just fine. He’s asked me to go to the phantom premier with him’ said Kim as she relived him asking her over again in her head, and smiled so much her eyes crinkled up. Rosie made a loud whooping noise into the phone which nearly deafened Kim, and then began to quiz her about what she would wear. After an hour of Rosie playing her stylist, suggesting all kinds of looks she might want to go for Kim made her excuses and said her goodbyes, promising to phone Rosie after the premier to let her know how it had gone.
For the next two weeks they continued their training, and Kim felt her nerves starting to jangle with the anticipation she felt about going to the premier. She was most anxious about what she was going to wear, and on one rare weekend off from the post production work she drove back to London to have a look around for the perfect dress. After the eighth shop was scoured with no joy Kim gave up and returned to Buckinghamshire empty handed, all apart from some gifts she had seen for Sally.
She parked her car up in the huge driveway and made her way inside to the lounge area in the bar downstairs. Since the Manor was also a hotel the bar was packed out with guests, crew members and the actors alike and it took Kim a while to actually locate Gerry, who she eventually found sat in a corner with his friends Andy and Colleen who had come to visit for the day. Colleen got up and gave Kim a huge hug as soon as she arrived at their table. The two women had been in touch on and off with each other since they had met at London fashion week all those years ago and Kim was delighted to hear the news that Colleen and Andy had recently married. The four sat and chatted for what seemed like hours before Colleen pestered Kim into taking her down to the huge library Gerry had mentioned existed earlier, and knowing how fascinated Colleen was with literature Kim agreed and they set off, leaving the men to have ‘guy time’ as Colleen put it.
‘Wow! Oh my god wow!’ exclaimed Colleen as Kim opened the heavy door of the library and showed her in. Every single inch of wall was covered in books; the bookcases themselves almost reached the ceiling with their towering heights.
‘Jesus you have no idea how lucky you are having all this at your fingertips’ said Colleen as she walked along one of the rows, running her fingertips over the soft leather spines of the books, picking out the occasional one that caught her eye and gently taking it out of its place to have a closer look.
‘We aren’t allowed to take anything out of here, but we can read all we want to as long as we stay in here’ said Kim as a first edition Wordsworth anthology caught her eye.
‘In that case I’m telling Andy I want a second honeymoon here so I can sit and have a bit of peace with all these lovely books’ giggled Colleen. ‘So where have you been today then? I was expecting to see you when I got here’ asked Colleen as she reached the big dark red leather sofas with Kim and flopped down.
‘I was wasting my time shopping in London, I went in for a dress and I came out with presents for my sister Sally’ Kim laughed. She had passed a huge toy store on her way to one designer outfitter and just couldn’t resist going in and buying the big grey teddy bear she had seen in the window for Sally, as well as some other little things that had caught her eye also. That particular five year old had a big sister who spoilt her rotten.
‘Couldn’t find anything huh? I hate it when that happens, you get yourself all psyched up to go and find something and then you can’t find anything that’s remotely interesting! So what occasion is the dress for then?’ asked Colleen as she kicked off her trainers as crossed her legs underneath herself on the sofa.
‘Gerry’s asked me to go to the phantom premier with him this weekend’ said Kim, feeling her cheeks glow a little, which they had been doing every time she had told someone.
‘Oh I see, he’s finally got round to it then’ said Colleen as she flicked open the cover of a book about the painter Monet.
‘Got round to what exactly?’ asked Kim.
‘Asking you out properly, we’ve been wondering when he was going to take the plunge’ said Colleen casually, not looking away from the book in her lap.
‘Oh it’s nothing like that Coll, just a as friend, that’s all’ said Kim.
‘You keep telling yourself that Kim, one day you might actually believe it too’ said Colleen in the same casual manner.
‘What do you mean?’ asked Kim dumbly.
‘I mean that what is it going to take for you two to realize you are bloody perfect for each other? And for you to both stop denying it, I mean imagine how happy you two could be together huh?’ said Colleen, meeting Kim’s eyes with a warm smile.
‘I don’t think he feels like that towards me’ said Kim, feeling her cheeks start to burn with embarrassment.
‘That’s not what he told me’ said Colleen.
As Kim heard the words, she felt a chill run through her, not a bad chill but just feeling that made her stomach flip and the hairs on her arms stand up. She slowly looked up at Colleen’s pretty petite face with caution. ‘What did he tell you’ she said in little more than a whisper, her heart beginning to beat faster as it anticipated Colleen’s next words.
‘Look I shouldn’t say anything; lord knows Andy’s always telling me to keep my nose out of other peoples affairs but this I just can’t help. I can’t sit back and watch two people who belong together not find each other. Look Kim I’ve known for a long time that he fancies you, and it wasn’t until a few hours ago that he finally opened up and told me more. You see as well as being Andy’s best friend, he’s mine too. And he knows I’m much more of a better listener that Andy is so I made him confess. This is what he told me earlier so as the age old line goes, when you are sitting comfortably, I shall begin…………………
Two hours earlier that day……
‘Where the hell are you hubby?’ thought Colleen to herself as she sat alone in bar area of the manor, where her husband Andy had said he would meet up with her. Colleen had just travelled down from Liverpool where she was doing the make up for a photo shoot with a famous footballer’s wife and was highly annoyed that he couldn’t be on time when he only had a 45 minute journey up to Buckinghamshire where hers had took 4 hours in heavy traffic due to a cargo lorry shedding its load onto the hard shoulder and causing much havoc. She checked her mobile again, no messages.
‘He could have least texted me if he was running late’ fumed Colleen to herself as she threw her mobile phone back into her bag.
‘Don’t be so hard on Andy, he got here two hours ago and decided to go off to the village pub with a few of the crew while he was waiting for you. I decided to be a gent and wait here for you’ said Gerry as his head appeared over the back of the sofa behind where Colleen was sat.
‘Jesus bloody wept Gerry, you nearly gave me a heart attack!’ said Colleen as she clutched her chest, heart pounding like a jackhammer with surprise. ‘How long have you been sat there for?’ she asked when she had calmed down slightly.
‘Ahhh, a spy never reveals his tricks’ said Gerry with a cheeky smile, which earned him a smack from Colleen. ‘Can I get you a drink?’ he asked as he climbed over the backs of the sofas so he was sat next to Colleen.
‘Ill have a double Jack Daniels and coke, I think that’s the least you owe me after nearly making me jump out of my skin!’ said Colleen as she took off her long purple coat and removed her cigarettes from her handbag.
‘Ok darling, ill be back in a flash. Give Andy a ring and let him know you are here, or those crazy Americans will have him pissed out of his head before long’ said Gerry, remembering the drinking habits of the men who had kidnapped Andy away to the local pub, The Black Horse.
When Gerry arrived back with Colleen’s drink and a large coffee for himself they sat and talked for ages about their most recent work, until the subject found itself firmly on one particular young woman.
‘So where’s the duchess then?’ said Colleen, referring to Kim. Colleen had called Kim duchess playfully for as long as she had known her, on account of Kim’s sometimes fiery temper.
‘She’s gone back to London for a bit today, she’ll be back here early this evening though I think’ said Gerry after his laughter at Colleen’s pet name for Kim had subsided.
‘It must be great seeing her nearly every day’ said Colleen before taking a big slug from her cold drink.
‘Yeah it is, sometimes when I’m away from her I forget how funny she is, I haven’t had this much fun in a long time, she just manages to crack me up laughing all the time’ said Gerry, with a twinkle in his eye so bright a blind man could see it.
‘She’s something special isn’t she?’ said Colleen, registering the look on Gerry’s face, and giving him a knowing look.
‘She is, she’s a very special girl is our Kim. I couldn’t ask for a better friend’ said Gerry. ‘Apart from you of course’ he added when Colleen jokingly make a hurt face, pushing out her bottom lip in a childlike way.
‘That’s not what I mean Gerry. You know exactly what I mean’ said Colleen, this time in a serious tone.
‘I don’t believe I do Coll’ answered Gerry, not making eye contact with Colleen and being very stubborn.
‘Come off it! You are just being a stubborn old git and I know that washes with Andy but it wont with me. You know exactly what I mean when I say Kim is special to you, and I don’t just mean special in friendship terms either. You and I are just friends, you don’t look at me in the same way you look at Kim, or act in the same way around me. I can compare it easily Gerry, and I see it as thus; you like Kim, and I’d bet my last pay check she feels the same about you, so at least if you aren’t going to admit the way you feel about her to her face, then admit it to me’ said Colleen as she finished her drink and gently squeezed Gerry’s arm.
After what had been such quiet that you could have heard a pin crash off the floor, let alone drop, Gerry sighed and looked up at Colleen.
‘You’re right’ he said quietly. ‘You are bang on target at usual’ said Gerry before he picked up his coffee cup and began to play with the spoon that he hadn’t bothered to take out.
‘So tell me, tell me how you feel about her’ prompted Colleen gently.
‘She makes me feel complete’ Gerry began. ‘It’s like when I’m with her, everything else just slips away, like for the time I’m in her company everything else just seems small, trivial, not worth it. And when I’m away from her I almost feel this emptiness, and then I can’t wait to see her again, and just sit with her and just be. I haven’t found one woman I can just be with, you know? Just to sit and enjoy comfortable silence with, or just be myself around. She’s just amazing Coll, really amazing, and so beautiful! I’ve never met anyone like Kim before, she makes me happy’ he finished. Colleen sat and nodded with her face alight with happiness at the fact that Gerry had finally told her what she had known since she had seen him and Kim at the fashion show. He was crazy about her.
‘So are you going to tell her how you feel?’ said Colleen after she had politely grabbed the attention of a passing waiter and had two fresh drinks brought over to their table.
‘I’d like to, but I’m not sure if she feels the same way. There are times when I think she might, and others when I think she doesn’t want to know. It’s a big gamble Coll, if I tell her it’s going to go either of two ways; I gain a girlfriend or I lose a best friend, and I think that it’s the thought of losing her all together that frightens me out of telling her’ said Gerry gloomily as he rubbed his eyes and reached out for his fresh cup of coffee.
‘This is Kim we are talking about, she’s way to nice to turn around and say ‘fuck off Gerry’. Personally, I think she is more likely to turn around and say ‘fuck me Gerry’ said Colleen as she laughed, lightening the air a little and making Gerry smile.
‘I’d hope for the latter reaction any day of the week’ said Gerry as his smile grew just that touch wider, and his thoughts began to turn.
‘Ok, ok, ok, before I loose you into fantasy land and cant get any sense out of you, promise me one thing will you? Asked Colleen, ‘Promise me you will at least think about telling her’.
‘Ok, ill promise you that’ agreed Gerry.
Kim sat and looked like a fish out of water after Colleens little revelation. Her mouth would open to say something, and then promptly close again. She was in shock.
‘I-I, I-I-I-I just c-c-c-c-can’t, I can’t, I-I, I can’t, he said what, I-I-I………’ Kim began to stutter, before she began shaking her head as if to help her process her thoughts, to shake in the words Colleen had spoken a little deeper so that they would register, make some sense, anything!
‘You can’t what Kim? Can’t believe its true, or can’t use the information you have heard and go make yourselves a bit happier by walking up to him in that bar, throwing your arms around his neck and plating a kiss on him and tell him you feel the same?’ said Colleen as Kim’s face changed into a complete jaw drop and she began to flounder again.
‘You don’t have to say anything until you are ready to’ Colleen told Kim as she held her hand up as to stop whatever jabber was about to come out of Kim’s mouth.
‘I need a little time to myself, I can’t go back there straight away knowing what I know now and just act normally’ said Kim in a shrill voice. ‘Are you going to tell him that you have told me? She then asked nervously.
‘Of course I’m not! This is as far as I go, the rest as they say is down to you two, but I’m expecting a happy outcome Kimmy! Look ill go tell a white lie to the boys and say you are on the phone to someone, give you a bit of time on your own in here’ said Colleen as she got up and gave Kim a cuddle on the opposite sofa, before departing the library, placing the book back in it’s correct place on the shelf on her way out.
Kim let her head loll back until it was hanging over the back of the sofa and her vision was upside down; just like the way she felt inside at that moment. She knew the ball was in her court, and now she had to make the decision as to let it bounce along and eventually lose momentum, or hit it back out again. This was going to take a hell of a lot of thinking.
