CHAPTER EIGHT
Josh hung up the phone and fell onto his bed. His heart was heavy and his head was swimming. He had been expecting this for some time now but he really thought he’d have a chance to tell her the truth before she found out. He ached all over and felt a good cry was coming. He was trying desperately not to succumb. Within the course of a month he’d lost two loves. January he didn’t care about but Karen … He closed his eyes and felt the room spin. He sat up quickly and grabbed onto the covers. He was overcome with nausea.
“Stop it, Josh. Get a grip.” He said out loud. He gulped and took a deep breath. “It’s not over, is it?” He whispered. He felt the tears approach and swallowed them away. “Nope.” He shook his head adamantly. “No, it isn’t over. She loves me as much as I love her. I’m sure of it.” He slid off the bed and paced the empty condo. “I have time. I’ll show her.” He muttered to himself. He spent most of the night on the computer, checking email, re-reading her letters, checking his website, basically trying to bide his time. As the sun went down Josh sat on the couch, computer on his lap, bottle of water on the table and stared blankly at the computer screen. He didn’t even notice until the room was black except for the page open on the screen. It was the first intimate letter Karen had written to him. One where she’d told him how he made her feel every time he called and wrote to her. He sniffled and opened another one. He read it and then moved on to the next. He finally shut down his computer and went to bed somewhere around midnight.
He didn’t want to do anything. He lay in bed and stared at the ceiling. There wasn’t anything to look forward to. He sighed. He missed Karen. He had slept awful after not having spoken to her before bed. He felt empty, his soul barren. He needed her back. He needed to hear her voice, feel her compassion. His mind went back to the last conversation they’d had. She was so angry, so hurt. He gritted his teeth and swallowed hard. He hated hearing her like that. He never in his life wanted to hurt her. He knew that he had. He knew he was going to. If only he had acted sooner … He had simply delayed the inevitable. His mind told him to get up and go to the studio. His body told him to fuck it. His heart ached. He got up, dressed and left the condo. Hopeful he would hear from Karen though he knew most likely he would not.
He poured his heart and soul into his recordings and got an exuberant pat on the back from David for the job he did. He didn’t care. He sat alone in the studio after everyone had gone for the day and played the piano until he was fatigued. He had no urge to go home knowing that there most likely no message or email from Karen. He finally left as the sun was just starting to set and headed for the condo. He stopped by and picked up an order of chicken fried rice for dinner. He parked in the usual spot in the garage and rode the slow elevator up to the fourth floor. Letting himself into the condo, he began flipping on lights and then after he turned on his computer, he went back around shutting them off again. He sat in the dark eating his rice and checking for any sign of Karen online. There was none. His phone rang. He checked his watch. It was 7. He checked the i.d. and saw it was her. He answered it.
“Hi.” He said.
“Hi.” She said back.
“I’m sorry.” He choked. Hearing the sadness in her voice was ripping him apart.
“Don’t keep apologizing.” She said. He cleared his throat so he could speak.
“But I am.”
“I know.” She stated. “You’ve said it a few times.”
“I would say it a hundred more if I thought it would help.”
“It won’t.” He sat silent and licked his lips. He wanted to say something magical and couldn’t come up with a thing; his heart sank in his chest.
“Well, I miss you.” He said finally.
“Mmhmm.” He squeezed his eyes shut and then opened them.
“Karen, regardless of my name you know we were attracted strongly to each other. That couldn’t have changed in one day.” She was silent on the other end.
“What changed, Josh, is the trust I had for you.” He cringed.
“I’m sorry.” He whispered.
“You said it again.”
“I’m sorry.” She sighed. “I didn’t mean to say it again. But I am. I will build your trust again, Karen. Allow me to do that. Don’t cut me off.”
“I’m not cutting you off but things are not going to be like they were.” He sighed and covered his eyes with one hand.
“I won’t ever hurt you again.”
“I have to go, it’s getting late.” He glanced at his watch and it had only been a half hour since they started talking.
“Please don’t hang up.” He begged.
“I don’t have anything else to say.”
“I do!” He said quickly.
“Then say it so I can go.” Her tone was so dull yet it cut him to the bone like a freshly sharpened blade.
“I can’t wait to see you Thursday.”
“That may not happen.”
“What?” He exclaimed. “Karen, please!” He heard her cough then clear her throat. She was silent for a time before she spoke.
“I don’t know that I’m still coming. We’ll see how I feel towards then.” He found he was panting, breathing very shallow.
“You have to come, we can talk this out personally instead of just on the phone. I need to see you, Karen.” She was silent.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Fair enough.” He said, confidently.
“Do you have any more to say?” Karen asked after they had gone quiet for a moment.
“Well …” He began. He didn’t know what else to say.
“Okay then. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.” She said.
“I lo…” The phone went dead in his ear. He hung it up and sat silent in the empty, dark room.
****************************************************************************
Karen tried to stay busy at work but it was a slow time and that made it difficult to keep Josh off her mind. She went to lunch and when she came back she found a huge flower arrangement on her desk. She sighed and smiled slightly. She knew in an instant they were from Josh. She pulled the card out and read it;
“Karen. Your beauty is far more superior to these flowers, they pale in comparison. Love, Josh.” She held the card to her chest as she bent down and inhaled their perfume. She knew he was sorry. She wanted to forgive but she was so full of pain. She had been hurt before and told herself it would never happen again. She was now a self-made woman, strong, secure, and self-reliant. She didn’t need a man to get through in this life. She had proved that months ago when she walked out on him, the ex. She promised herself she would never rely on a man to get her through. She sat down and busied herself with work. She found herself staring at the flowers, engulfed in the sweet smell. She didn’t know what to do. She wanted to forgive and forget but there was a nagging doubt. She had until Wednesday night to decide. She put him out of her mind until she got home from work and found more flowers.
“Look, Mom!” Kelly said dragging Karen into the kitchen where there were several flower arrangements on the counter. “He’s really sorry.” Karen sighed again and checked the cards. All from Josh, all with a sweet, poetic saying on them. She stuffed her face in all of them. They smelled heavenly.
“I know he’s sorry Kelly. I’m sorry too.”
“You’re not going to dump him, are you Mom?” Karen sighed and tossed her car keys down on the counter.
“I don’t know yet.” She said as she headed into her room to change her clothes. She made dinner and the four of them sat and ate in silence. At nine Karen made her call to Josh. He was apologizing and begging and pleading again. She told him she’d gotten the flowers and thanked him. He said she was worth more but didn’t want to blow his wad in one day. She sighed and rolled her eyes; that was a clue that there was more to come tomorrow. Then she smiled. She loved flowers and getting them at work was the best thing a man could do for her. She would never tell him that though. He didn’t need to know that he was getting to her. When the conversation slowed again she decided it was time to hang up. She didn’t want him to talk her into chatting all night like they used to. She told him goodbye and hung up quickly before he could say another word, one that would tear through her and make her cry. She was done crying. She got dressed for bed and crawled into it. She lay down and closed her eyes. Josh loomed above her. He was so handsome, his voice so velvety and smooth. She felt tears sting her eyes under her lids. They dripped down the sides of her face and into her ears. She sniffled. She wanted him very badly and at the same time … She didn’t know what to do. She cried herself to sleep. Again.
The flowers had multiplied by Wednesday. Karen laughed when she saw them. There was no where else to put them anymore. She started going around the office and planting them on every desk, man or woman. By the time she got home from work, the flowers there had multiplied as well. Karen sighed. She still had not made a decision. She was supposed to be on a plane in the morning and meet him at the airport in the afternoon. She prepared dinner in a daze. The four of them ate again in silence but she knew what they were thinking, how they felt. When she put them to bed she leaned down and kissed each one. She told Kelly she doubted very much that she was going to California.
“Are we still going to Dad’s then, Mom?” Kelly asked.
“Yes. Even if I don’t go I think I’ll need some time alone.” Kelly hugged Karen tightly.
“Don’t forget to call me no matter where you are.” Karen kissed her forehead.
“I won’t.”
She went into her room and sat down in front of her computer. She went to the Josh Groban website and sifted through some of the pictures and information that was there. She wanted to hear him sing. Going to the music section she clicked on a song called My December and listened to it. It began with a beautiful piano piece and then Josh began to sing;
this is my December
this is my time of the year
this is my December
this is all so clear
this is my December
this is my snow covered home
this is my December
this is me alone
and I just wish that I didn’t feel
like there was something I missed
and I
take back all the things I said
to make you feel like that
and I
just wish that I didn’t feel
like there was something I missed
and I
take back all the things I said to you
and I’d give it all away
just to have somewhere to go to
give it all away
to have someone to come home to
this is my December
these are my snow covered dreams
this is me pretending
this is all I need
and I
just wish that I didn’t feel
like there was something I missed
and I
take back all the things I said
to make you feel like that
and I
just wish that I didn’t feel
like there was something I missed
and I
take back all the things I said to you
and I’d give it all away
just to have somewhere to go to
give it all away
to have someone to come home to
this is my December
this is my time of the year
this is my December
this is all so clear
and I’d give it all away
just to have somewhere to go to
give it all away
to have someone to come home to
By the time he sang the last notes Karen was crying again. She decided that she missed him. Why did he have to be such a shit! When she finally fell asleep she still was unsure about whether or not she would get on that plane …
CHAPTER NINE
Josh sat uncomfortably in a seat that he was sure was meant to be sat in for short periods of time. The airport was bustling with people who rushed here and there. He watched them, amazed. They resembled bees in a hive. The din was similar to the hum of bees around the hive as well. He glanced up at the arrivals board. Her plane had just touched down and he had absolutely no idea if she was on board or not since he had not spoken to her since Wednesday. He sighed and leaned back in the uncomfortable chair. Nervously he rubbed his hands together. He got up and stood behind the chair and leaned down on it, his hands folded over the back and watched as the ramp extended toward the plane. People would be disembarking shortly. He felt his stomach doing flips. As he lay in bed the night before he spent a good portion of his time awake praying that she would get on the flight. He was anxious to see if it worked. All at once people started to drift off the plane and into the airport. Josh grabbed the bouquet of flowers he’d brought off the seat in front of him and leaned against the wall, waiting. As the people got off the plane, he scanned the faces. It was easy at first, people would straggle out and then there was a huge rush as a crowd bustled past him. She wasn’t there. His heart sank. The crowd thinned and one or two people came down the hallway. When he saw no one else his head dropped. He pushed himself away from the wall and began to walk away. He’d taken a few steps when he heard someone call his name. He lifted his head and turned around. Karen stood just a few feet away. Josh rushed to her and wrapped his arms around her. Holding her tightly he felt her arms slip around his waist. She hugged him. He leaned back and looked into her face, stared into her eyes, and smiled.
“Thank you for coming.” He said quietly and for that moment there was no one else around. He saw only her, he heard only her.
“I didn’t think I would.” She said.
“But you did.” He leaned down and met her lips with his for a tender and slight kiss. She smiled feebly. “Oh, I almost forgot.” He brought the bouquet of flowers up and held them in front of her. “I brought these for you.” She took them and pressed them to her face. Their scent was sweet.
“Thank you.” She said. He took her hand and led her to the baggage claim. As she pointed out which suitcase was hers he grabbed it off of the belt and then carried it for her as they emerged from the building into the bright California sunlight. Josh handed the bag to a driver then opened the door on the black limo that waited patiently for them. Karen slid in and then Josh followed.
“Wow! A limo!” She sighed. Josh sat next to her and smiled. “Why are you smiling like that?” She asked.
“I just can’t believe you’re here.” He said and took her hand in his and held it.
“You’re still not out of trouble.” She said. He looked into her green eyes and smiled again.
“I know, but you’re here!” The driver got into the car and sped off towards the highway. They stared at each other. Josh reached over and touched her cheek. “We’re going straight to the hotel so you can check in.” Karen nodded. “Then we can do whatever you want to do.”
“Okay.” She curled her fingers into his. His hand was warm and his fingers, long and slender. They engulfed hers. She looked out the window at the blue sky and palm trees then back at Josh who’s gaze had never left her. “I’m sorry I didn’t call last night.” She whispered. He leaned down and kissed her again.
“I don’t care now.” He said softly and pressed his lips on hers once more. She leaned into him as he slid his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. They rode in silence the rest of the way to the Omni Hotel.
Josh swung open the door to the suite and allowed Karen to step in ahead of him. She gasped.
“Oh Josh!” She squealed. “This isn’t a hotel room it’s an apartment!” The room boasted a 12 foot high ceiling and velvet curtains that hung from the ceiling and pooled onto the floor below. Josh laughed as she ran from room to jumping up and down like a little girl. “Oh my GOD!” She shouted as she found the bathroom. “This place is bigger then my whole house!” He set her suitcase and duffle bag down on the couch and found a bottle of champagne chilling in the fridge. He popped it open and poured it into two crystal flutes. He wandered the suite looking for her and found her in the bedroom. She was looking out the window at the view of sprawling Los Angeles. She sighed right as he walked in the door carrying the glasses.
“I’m glad I found you in here.” Karen turned to him. He strolled over to where she stood and held out the glass. She took it. He held his glass up to her. “I just want to say that I’m very happy you are here with me today. You are a gorgeous, wonderful woman and I’m blessed to have you in my life. If I could take back all the anger, pain, and hurt you’ve felt these last few days I would – in a heartbeat. But I can’t go back in time and so my only option is to go forward and hope that you will move forward with me.” He tipped his glass forward against Karen’s glass. It made a pleasant ringing sound and then they both sipped. Josh leaned forward and kissed Karen. He could taste the champagne on her lips. He pressed down deeply on her mouth and she leaned forward to him, wrapping her arms around his neck, her glass still in one hand. He slid his arm around her waist and pulled her closer. When they finally broke apart, Karen was panting. “Let me take that for you.” He said retrieving the flute from Karen. He noticed how her hand shook nervously. He smiled as he set both of them down on the table next to the window. Approaching her he put one arm around her waist, leaned down and slipped the other under her thighs. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he swept her off her feet and carried her to the king sized, golden, satin-covered bed. He set her down gently on it and then straddled her. He leaned down to her and felt her breathing shallow and erratic. He kissed her lips then her nose and then her forehead.
“Hey,” He said lacing his fingers through hers. “Are you okay, you’re breathing heavy.” She tried to take a deep breath and found she couldn’t.
“I’m, I’m just nervous.” She said with a slight stutter. He kissed her fingertips one by one, his lips lingering.
“Relax. We have all night.” She smiled, obviously apprehensive. He got up off the bed, went over to the table and returned with their glasses of champagne. He handed her one and kept one. “Here, have a drink.” He took a sip and watched as she did too. He set his glass on the bedside table and took her free hand into his. He held her palm over his fist and rubbed the top of her hand lightly. She smiled at him as his fingers trailed over her wrist and up her arm to her shoulder. “Drink some more.” He instructed. She did.
“You’re just trying to get me drunk.” She said. He laughed.
“Not on your life! Do you think I want to hold your head over that fancy toilet in there all night? Mmm mmm.” He pointed towards the bathroom. Karen uttered a laugh.
“No, I don’t suppose you would.” He leaned forward.
“I’d rather run my fingers through your hair and hold you close to me as you fall asleep.” He whispered and then kissed her. Her lips tasted deliciously of champagne, he ran his tongue along her lower lip and moaned. “MmmMmm …” He said. “Have some more.” She took another sip and he kissed her again. She turned the glass upside down and finished the drink then set the flute on the table next to his. He took her face into his hands and kissed her, his lips moving across hers drinking in the flavor. He slid his tongue along her lip again and then slipped inside her mouth. He moaned against her and then pulled away. She didn’t want to let him go … He began to unbutton the sleeveless blouse she wore slowly, button by button and then slipped it off her shoulders. She made to reach for the back of her bra to unhook it and he took her hands. “Leave it on for now, it’s sexy.” He said softly eyeing the pink lace and the way her breasts pushed forward almost coming out of it. He lay her back on the pillows and ran his fingers lightly from her neck to her shoulders, over the mounds of her covered breasts and down her belly to the waistband of her denim skirt. He unsnapped then unzipped them. She raised her hips slightly so he could pull down the skirt and then tossed it on the slipper chair nearby where her blouse had landed moments ago. Her shoes went next. He ran his fingers back up her legs, over her knees and thighs and across her hips to her belly. “Oh, Karen.” He sighed as his eyes caressed her body and his fingers slid just under the lace waistband of her panties. She raised her hips instinctively to him and shivered. He straddled her again and pulled her up by her arms off the pillows. Reaching behind her he unhooked her bra and slid it down off her then pushed her back gently. Leaning forward he pressed his mouth down on hers as his hands slid up slowly from her hips to her waist and then up under her breasts. He ran his palms along them feeling her taut nipples. He squeezed them gently, kneading the soft skin and rubbing his thumbs over her nipples. She sighed softly as he continued to kiss her, his mouth soft against hers, his tongue exploring. She ran her hands up his sides, over his broad shoulders and slid her fingers into his curls. His whole body tingled as she raked her nails lightly over his scalp. Josh pulled his lips from Karen’s mouth and kissed her cheek then moved down to her chin. He kissed the little indentation where her chin met her neck then he moved down her neck. He found another spot on her clavicle and licked her lightly before pressing his lips against her. He began to nibble her and she moaned. “You like that?” He whispered and bit her gently.
“Oh God, yes, Josh. Bite me …” She panted. He bit down harder which drew another moan from her. His hands squeezed her gently as he sucked her skin into his mouth then let go and sucked it in again. He felt her nipples tighten further under his thumbs as her excitement built. He slowly moved down her chest until he kissed her breasts lightly. He circled her nipple with his tongue then sucked it into his mouth where he rubbed his tongue along the end of it. She wrapped her fingers in his curls and held him there. He moved from one breast to the other before moving down her torso leaving a trail of wetness behind. He hooked his fingers into her panties and pulled them down slowly. Karen gasped as she felt what remained of her clothing being stripped from her and tossed away. She closed her eyes as she felt his fingers running up her legs again, this time he opened his hands and ran them up her belly and around her hips then down to her thighs again. He slid them to the inside of her thighs and pushed them apart slightly. He ran his fingers upwards along her thighs until they brushed against her opening. She shuddered and felt her body flush hotly. Josh pushed her knees upward until her legs were bent and then he brushed his fingers up her thighs again until he’d reached the end. Karen sucked in air as Josh spread her lips apart with his fingers and wiggled them against her. He ran his index finger up her then slid it slowly inside. Karen moaned and pressed herself back against the pillows as he worked his finger in and then back out.
“Oh baby, you are wet …” He whispered and then ducked his head between her knees. His curls brushed against the insides of her thighs as he made his way to the sweet and spicy, very wet spot between her legs. He lay down on his belly on the bed, wrapped his long arms around her legs and used his fingers to spread her open. She gasped loudly as she felt his tongue brush against her for the first time. He licked her again and again, drinking in her wetness, encouraged to lick harder and faster by her moans. She squeezed her thighs closer to his head and grabbed onto the bedspread.
“Oh Josh, Ohhh … that feels so good, don’t stop.” She cried. He thrust his tongue deep inside her, his lips rubbing softly along the outsides of her, bringing her to the edge of her climax. She grabbed his head and held it tightly against herself, muffling his moans as she finally relaxed and pulsated wildly against him. She finally released him and he crawled up and over her breathing heavily. She pulled him close and went to kiss him but he stopped her and, grabbing one of the nearby pillows wiped his face. He raised one eyebrow at her and smiled wickedly.
“I didn’t think you’d want me to kiss you with a messy face.” Karen giggled and pulled his mouth down on hers. He kissed her and then leaned up on his knees. He pulled his tee shirt up and over his head and tossed it away. She sighed at the sight of his broad, hairy chest. “Oh you like that eh?” He teased and pulled her hands to his chest where she lightly stroked his fur.
“I love it!” She said and ran her finger along his chest and then to where the hair trailed downwards. She rested her finger against the waist of his jeans. “I think …” She said lightly, running her fingers just inside the top of the pants. “That these are in the way.” He reached down and unsnapped then unzipped them. He climbed down off the bed and pulled them off. He slipped out of his boxers then crawled back on top of Karen. She reached down, excited and anxious to touch him. He kneeled over her and leaned up so he was full and hard, pointing right at her. She reached forward and wrapped her hands around him. The contrast between the cool of her hands and the warmth that pulsated through him made him gasp and then let out a low groan. He pulled himself back after a minute then leaned down over her. He looked seriously at her, brows furrowed.
“Karen, I can’t … I have to … do it, I can’t wait. “ He held himself up on one elbow while he reached down with his other hand and guided himself towards her. He slipped quickly and easily inside her and then groaned as he held himself deeply there. He dipped his head and covered her mouth with his, his tongue mingling with hers, exploring, then he backed up and began to move himself in and out. He went slowly at first, savoring every thrust, going deeper each time, filling her. He lay his head down on her shoulder and she ran her fingers through his curls finding his scalp damp. He raised his head again and looked at her, his eyes searching hers. He breathed heavily through his nose, lips pressed together, his chest heaving, his hips pressing against hers as he moved in and out, his excitement building until he could stand no more and then with a whimper, let himself go and emptied inside her. He collapsed on top of her, sweat dripped off his forehead and onto her shoulder. She wrapped her arms around him and held him close. He pushed himself up and smiled at her. “Wow.” He said. She smiled and kissed his lips lightly.
“Thank you.” She whispered, choked with emotion. He rolled over and pulled her to his chest.
“Thank you?” He questioned and then laughed. “Did you say ‘thank you’?” She giggled.
“What’s wrong with ‘thank you’?” Her head bounced off him every time he laughed.
“It’s like I just did you a favor.” He said. She sighed.
“Maybe you did.” He stroked her hair softly.
“No, it’s the other way around.” He whispered and took a deep breath. He felt himself relax and then exhaled. He put his other arm around her and drew her deeply into himself. “Thank you for coming.” He said seriously and then laughed when she giggled uncontrollably. “Now stop that, I’m trying to be serious here.” She swatted at him.
“You started it!” She said. He flipped her over onto her back and then lay on top of her heavily. “Oh God, you’re crushing me.” She squeaked.
“Now I’m ending it.” He raised himself up a bit so she could breathe but couldn’t move and then pushed her hair from her eyes and off her face. “Listen, I’m glad you’re here.” He said and smiled at her. “I was afraid you wouldn’t get on that plane. I thought I was going to die waiting for you. The fear that you wouldn’t come and just not call was almost paralyzing. Karen …” He grew quiet and the only sound in the room was of their breathing. She stared up into his big, brown eyes and thought she caught something in them, a sparkle perhaps … it turned out to be tears. “I love you.” He whispered and then, before she could respond, kissed her. She threw her arms around his neck and kissed him back with passion.
“I discovered something on my way here.” She said. He smiled slightly and rubbed her nose with his.
“What’s that?” He asked.
“That I love you too.” She said. He smiled and kissed her again.
****************************************************************************
Josh tossed Karen her blouse.
“Go on and put that gorgeous outfit back on Kar, I wanna take you out to eat.” She slipped it on and buttoned it.
“Where do you want to take me?” She slipped her skirt back on and smoothed it down over her hips. Josh stepped into his runners and tied them. He came up behind her as she fixed her hair in the mirror and wrapped his arms around her. She smiled and rubbed his arms. He kissed her neck and bit deeply into it. She sighed.
“Back to bed.” He growled. She felt a tingly sensation in her belly that radiated down her thighs. He licked her neck then kissed upwards to her ear.
“In about two seconds I’m gonna drag you there …” She whispered, overcome with desire and feeling weak. She turned around and slipped her arms around his neck pulling his mouth down on hers. He kissed her and pressed her back against the sink, his hips moving against her. His hands slid up and down her back and then up her neck and into her hair. She moaned as his lips sucked at hers and his fingers massaged her scalp. He pulled himself away from her, he was breathing deeply again.
“Well here’s the dilemma …” He said with a sigh. “Do we go out to eat or stay here and fuck again?” He tucked his head down to his chest, scratched his head then looked up at her with a leering grin. She giggled and slipped her arms around his waist.
“Well … we could always do this …” Karen looked up at him and smiled. “Fuck now, eat later, then fuck again.” He laughed.
“I love the way you think! I knew there was a reason we were meant to be together!!” He scooped her up in his arms and brought her back to the bed. For the second time in two hours Karen’s clothes ended up in a heap on the floor. Josh touched her body tenderly and she responded with sighs. Pushing her down onto the bed he entered her then he slid his arms around her and lifted her up to himself wrapping her legs around him. She pressed her breasts against his chest, the hair on his chest tickling her. He was on his knees holding her bottom as she slid her arms tight around his neck. He raised himself up and made love to her, thrusting against her, kissing her, until he reached his climax. His body shook from the force of it and he almost toppled over onto her. She laughed as they fell to the bed, legs tangled. He lay on his back and sighed.
“God!” He said loudly. “You are the best!” Karen rolled on top of him and he wrapped his arms around her.
“Not me, sexy man, you!” She said and tickled his feet with hers. He giggled and shook his legs.
“Don’t! Stop that!” He said between laughs. He rolled her over and held her down on the bed. “You wanna play rough because I’m into that …” He raised one eyebrow up and down at her and smiled devilishly.
“Maybe we can do a little rough housing when we get back from dinner?” He hopped off the bed and began to dress.
“Great idea!” He said and once again tossed her blouse to her and for the third time that day Karen dressed.
Josh called the front desk and ordered up a car while Karen fixed her hair. She burst out of the bathroom startling Josh who stood at the front window looking out at bustling L.A.
“You ready already?” He asked raising his eyebrows.
“Uhhh yeah …” She said. He glanced down at his watch. “Why?” She tucked her hair behind her ear.
“I, umm, I’m not used to … someone being ready in such a short time.” She didn’t want to know then and headed for the door. He followed, passed her up, and held the door open for her. When they went through the immense lobby to the front door they found the same limo waiting for them. The driver held the door open for them and they slid inside. Less then 20 minutes later they arrived at a restaurant called Joselito’s West. “Hope you are up for Mexican.” He said as he held the door open for her.
“I love it!” She said. They followed the Maitre’d to a private booth towards the kitchen and sat. Karen decided quickly what she wanted, Josh already knew. When the waiter came back he ordered a pitcher of strawberry banana margaritas, then placed their order in Spanish and finished with a big, handsome smile and a “Por favor.” The waiter thanked him, called him by name, and left to get the drinks. Josh folded his hands in front of him on the table and grinned at Karen.
“What?” She asked suspiciously. “Do I have something stuck in my teeth?” He chuckled.
“Yeah, one of my hairs.” She made a face.
“That was gross.” She commented and then smiled. “Not to mention I haven’t had your ‘hairs’ that close to my mouth … yet.” He grunted.
“There’s time for that later.” He said and just then the waiter approached with the drinks. He poured a glass for each of them, set down chips and salsa then disappeared once more. “So what did you think of L.A.?” He sipped his drink.
“I haven’t really seen any of it. So far the only tour I’ve gotten has been a detailed tour of your body. Which, I’m not saying isn’t fabulous but if you want to know what I think of L.A. you’ll have to unchain me from the bed for a little while and get me out into the fresh air.” Josh laughed.
“I’ll take you on the five cent tour tomorrow. And tonight we’re going to shoot over to my place in the limo and grab my car.” Karen nodded and took a drink of her margarita. She glanced down at her watch. It was a little after 4:30, her time.
“I have to call the kids.” She said pulling her cell phone from her purse.
“Go right ahead, and tell them I said ‘hi’.” Karen dialed the number. Her ex-husband answered his phone on the second ring.
“Are the kids there?” She asked without greeting him.
“Yeah.” He said and offered no greeting.
“Let me talk to Ryan.” She stated. There was silence on the other end as Ryan was called to the phone. She talked to them one-by-one, answering as many questions as she could without embarrassing not only herself but Josh as well. She talked to Carlie last.
“Momma, I miss you already.” She said in her little girl voice. Karen’s heart ached for her.
“I miss you too, peanut.” She said softly. “I will be back soon.”
“Is Jay … I mean Josh nice?” She asked. Karen smiled, glanced at Josh and uttered a soft laugh.
“Yes, sweetie, he’s very nice.”
“Is he cute?” Karen winked at Josh. He blushed, smiled shyly and looked down at his lap.
“Yeah, he’s very cute.” She said. Josh looked up and mouthed, “Ahhhh …” and nodded. “I’m going to bring you guys back some stuff. Josh and I are going to go shopping.”
“When?” Carlie asked.
“Not sure.” She said.
“Tomorrow.” Josh added.
“Was that him?” Asked Carlie.
“Yep.”
“Can I talk to him?” Karen made a quizzical face.
“Sure, I guess so.” She said and handed the phone across the table to Josh. He took it and said hello.
“Oh hi, Carlie.” He said. “Your mom and I are having dinner. She’s a nice lady and I promise to be nice to her and send her home in a few days.” His heart ached when he said it. He hadn’t thought about sending her back home on Sunday and now that it had come out he felt instantly saddened. “Cross my heart and hope to die.” He said crossing his chest with a finger. “Oh yeah, good stuff. There’s a lot of it here in California. Oh yeah?” He asked and smiled at Karen. “Is he nice to you? Sometimes? Why only sometimes? I know …” He said and sighed. “She would have wanted you here too.” Karen leered at Josh and shook her head. He frowned at her and then laughed. “Okay, here she is. You too …” He handed Karen back her phone. Karen talked another few minutes and then hung up. She packed her phone neatly back into her purse.
“What the hell was all that chatting about?” Karen asked Josh right after the food had arrived.
“Apparently your youngest child misses you.” He said as he poured spicy salsa all over his food. Karen eyed him. He shrugged. “What?” He asked. She shook her head.
“Nothing, you’re going to regret that later.” He shook his head and spooned forkfuls of rice into his mouth.
“Oh, no.” He said, swallowing. “I love it!”
“Eating something that spicy would kill my stomach.” She said.
“Not me. I’m tough.” He smiled at her out of the corner of his mouth. “Which reminds me, we’ve got some rough housing to do.” Karen felt herself blush in the dark of the restaurant. He chuckled. “Better hurry up and eat, I’m anxious to get back.” She looked at him, smiled, and then burst into a giggle.
“You’re funny.” He took a bite of a burrito and wiped his lips.
“Oh, no, I’m serious!” He raised his eyebrows at her and then chuckled. They finished their meal, Josh paid, and they headed out to the limo. The plan was to go to his condo and get his car then head back to the hotel. When they emerged from the restaurant there were fans and photographers milling about. When they saw Josh they descended like a flock of seagulls on fresh fish. The fans shoved paper and pens at him while the flashbulbs popped in his eyes. Karen slammed her eyes shut and saw white circles under her lids. She was being pushed to the side by women who wanted to be close to Josh. Suddenly she felt a hand pull her close. She opened her eyes and Josh had his arm around her shoulder. He held on to her with one hand while the other signed autographs. Just then a security guard from the restaurant pushed his way through the crowd and began clearing a path for them to the car. Josh took Karen by the hand and led her away. A man with a camera stood in front of them.
“Hey, Josh. Obviously Jan’s been replaced. Who is she?”
“Her name is Karen.” Josh said and as the photographer snapped a picture, Josh smiled his famous bright, white smile. They slid into the limo, the guard slammed the door shut and the driver pulled away slowly.
“What the hell was that all about?” Karen sighed, leaning back on the seat and exhaling. Josh slid his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close.
“It’s what I have to deal with almost on a daily basis.” He sighed.
“That’s awful.” She muttered. He slipped a finger under her chin and turned her face up towards his. He looked into her eyes.
“That’s why, Karen …” He was gazing at her softly. “I didn’t tell you who I was. I was afraid. I have to be afraid. They are everywhere.” She smiled a half-smile and nodded.
“I understand.” She whispered. He leaned down and kissed her lips lightly.
“To my house.” He told the driver and they sped off down Ventura Boulevard.
The driver dropped them off in front of the large building Josh called home. He took Karen’s hand and led her inside where he was greeted by a colossal doorman who removed his hat and held the door open for them as they passed through.
“Good afternoon Mr. Groban.” The immense man said in greeting.
“Hey,Curt. How are things today?” Josh smiled at him and pulled Karen towards the elevator.
“Great, sir. Hey! Your brother was looking for you.” Josh frowned. If Chris was looking for him, why didn’t he just call his cell phone? Josh waved and thanked him as the elevator arrived and they boarded. Josh pulled his cell phone out of his back pocket and noticed it wasn’t turned on. He sighed disgustedly and pressed the power button.
“Good grief.” He said. “That was dumb. I probably sent everyone into a panic.” Karen giggled and Josh snickered. “Really! If they don’t hear from me within 5 minutes they call the cops.” Karen laughed out loud. Josh noticed he had 6 voice mail messages but then turned the phone back off.
“Oh come on.” She said. “Serious?” He shrugged and nodded.
“Yeah, well, kinda.” The elevator doors opened and they headed out into the hall. He led her to his door, opened it with an oversized key and then quickly pressed some buttons on the alarm system, disengaging it. The condo was dark and cool. Josh tossed his keys on a table in the hallway and led her into the house flipping on lights as he went through the rooms. “This is the kitchen.” He said, leading her through a sparsely decorated modern kitchen complete with stainless steel appliances. It was minimal but very nice. He led her through a modest living room and into the master bedroom. He leaned against the doorway and smiled.
“This is my bedroom.” He winked and held his hand out. She took it and he pulled her into his arms. Josh leaned down and kissed her full on the mouth. “Imagine all the things that are going to happen in here.” He backed her up to the bed and pushed her back onto it. He lay on top of her and held her down, kissing her mouth then her neck. She slid her hands up his shirt and raked her nails down his back. He groaned into her shoulder. “Oh God, don’t stop that.” He moaned. She scratched his back while he writhed on top of her and when she stopped he flattened himself on top of her.
“Oooof!” She said as he pressed the breath right out of her. He laughed and got up. She sat up. “You’re a tease.” She muttered smoothing her hair down on the back of her head. He squeezed his eyes shut until they were only open slits. He unbuttoned his jeans and stood in front of her.
“Oh I’m a tease, am I?” He said, threatening. “You, who use those claws to tease my back then pull away way before you were actually finished.” He unzipped his zipper a tiny bit. She eyed him and smiled. He pulled the zipper down more and she reached for him. He backed away just out of her reach. “Oh no, no …” He wagged a finger at her and pulled the zipper down all the way. She could see the fuzzy hair on his belly and had the urge to touch it.
“Get over here.” She got up and reached for him. He turned and hopped away pulling his jeans off, nearly toppling over, and tossed them at her as she chased him.
“Josh!” She chased him into the living room where he ran behind a chair and pulled his shirt up over his head. “You’re naughty!” He threw the shirt at her and laughed as it wound around her head. She pulled it off and threw it behind her as she lunged at him. He ducked her and ran towards the kitchen. “You’re going to need a spanking for teasing me like that!” He laughed and ran behind the dining room table and leered at her. She stood on the other side of the table and grinned at the naked man standing across from her, obviously enjoying the attention he was getting. She was panting, he wasn’t. “Dammit!” She snapped. He threw his head back and laughed and she took the momentary distraction to lunge at him. He tried to get past her and she tackled him into the wall. He laughed as he bounced off the wall and back into her then they both fell, sprawled on the floor. She pinned him down, kneeling over him. “Well, well, well …” She said and grinned.
“Oh, looks like you’ve caught me fair and square.” He easily conceded. Karen leaned down and kissed him then ran her tongue down his chin and onto his neck. He sighed. “Ohhh and the punishment is awful …” He shivered as she ran her hands down his body, following the line of hair that began just underneath his chest and led towards his belly button then below. She found him hard and ready.
“What’s this?” She asked, taking him into her hands. He gasped as she dipped her head and kissed the tip.
“Oh that’s your dessert baby. Go on, indulge yourself.” He whispered. She slid her hands up and down him then licked the head of it. He groaned. “Oh yeah ..” He sighed. She circled it with her tongue then took him into her mouth. “Ohhh …” Josh moaned as she took him nearly all the way in then backed out and did it again. He was panting and moaning as Karen sucked him, holding his hips down. He leaned forward, his arms behind his head and took a deep breath. “Oh baby, Karen … Stop, wait …” She backed up and looked at him.
“What?” She asked. He sat up and pulled at her shirt, frustrated by the buttons.
“If you had gone another minute you would have had more then you bargained for.” He undressed her quickly then pulled her on top of him. She guided him inside her and sat down slowly. He lay back and tucked his arms behind his head and gasped as she raised herself up quickly then slowly lowered herself back down onto him. Karen leaned forward onto his chest and rode him. He raised his knees and helped her get the most out of the position. She closed her eyes as she felt a tingling sensation that began in her belly and traveled downwards to the insides of her thighs.
“Oh Josh, oh God …” She moaned. He groaned and reached for her as he climaxed. She cried out as she peaked herself. His orgasm grew more intense as he felt her pulsate around him, squeezing him. She let out a loud sigh and leaned forward onto him as she came down from the excitement of the moment. He draped his arms over her back and sighed.
“Oh baby.” He whispered. Karen was exhausted. She felt a little lightheaded and took a deep breath. “Ready to go sightseeing?” He asked. She snorted.
“Oh, shit, I’m ready for a nap.” He laughed and pushed her upwards.
“Come on, let’s go.” She rolled off of him and lay on her back on the cool floor. Josh made his way around the condo picking up pieces of clothing and putting them on as he found them. He met her back in the dining room and crouched down in front of her. She lay with her eyes closed, breathing heavily. He tickled her nipple with his finger and watched as it hardened in response. She chuckled. “Wanna do it again?” He asked and watched as she laughed. She covered her mouth and sat up.
“Oh dear God, you’re going to have to carry me to the car.” He tossed her clothes down at her and got up.
“Okay. But you’d better put those on first.” He went into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. He heard her moving in the other room, closed the fridge and joined her moments later. Karen put her clothes back on for the FOURTH time in one day.
They rode the elevator down to the parking garage. Karen leaned against the back wall. Josh moved up to her and leaned his forehead against hers. She giggled and pushed on his chest. He groaned.
“You’re wearing me out.” She said. He slipped his arms around her waist and pulled her to him.
“I promise I’ll give you a break and let you rest.” She tilted her head up to him and he kissed her a couple times lightly. She slid her arms around his waist and he kissed her deeper. His tongue slid over her bottom lip and she opened her mouth to him. The elevator stopped and they broke apart quickly.
“So much for letting me rest.” She mumbled. He laughed and pulled his keys out of his jeans pocket. They approached a small silver car. Josh clicked a button on his keychain and turned off the alarm and opened the doors. He opened the passenger door for Karen. She slid into the passenger seat. Josh closed it and ran around to the other side. He started the engine and then backed out of the space. They drove out from the underground garage and into the sunlight. Karen squinted and held her hands up in front of her. Josh slipped his sunglasses on and turned onto the avenue. Karen smiled and looked at all the fancy gadgets inside. “Nice car.” She said. He smiled proudly.
“It’s not bad, is it?”
“Beats my piece of shit.”
“Your van?” He turned the radio on low.
“Yeah. But I could never get away with something this small.” He laughed and made a left turn onto Sycamore.
“Well …” He grinned. “Those big vans are good for a few things.” Karen smacked his arm.
“You’ve got a one-track mind.” He nodded quickly.
“This,” He said pointing to a massive concert hall. “Is the Greek Theatre. I did a concert there last year and they made it into a DVD.” She smiled.
“They did?” She asked.
“Yeah.”
“I’d love to see it.” He turned at the corner and she could see the bulk of it.
“It’s huge!” She exclaimed.
“And it was full, packed that night too. It was cool.”
“Can we watch it later?” He shook his head.
“No way.” She frowned.
“Why not?”
“Cuz I have other things planned.” She sighed. She was pretty sure she knew what those other things were and they probably involved being naked and being on a bed. She smiled. Not that she minded. It had been a long time since she’d had sex with anyone not to mention this very sexy, very young man. Josh headed downtown and took Karen on a quick tour of Beverly Hills. She stared out the window in awe. The scenery was perfect, it looked like it was a movie set, the palm trees swayed and flapped in the breeze, people walked down the streets, some of them dressed in next to nothing, others dressed as though they were going to the Opera. The shops and stores boasted famous names. It was awe-inspiring. Karen smiled. Not only couldn’t she believe she was here but she was with a celebrity. She considered herself lucky that she didn’t know who Josh was before she met him or she may have been intimidated, too intimidated to have a decent conversation with him. She may have just babbled like an idiot. He would have hung up and never called her again. She glanced over at him. She felt a pang of guilt that she’d been so angry with him for not telling her who he was. She now realized the importance of that as they drove down Wilshire Boulevard in a Porsche. He was so handsome, sitting there next to her, his curls blowing wildly in the wind, flapping against his cheek. She slid her hand over his which rested on the gear shift. He glanced over at her and smiled before turning his attention back to the road. He looked at her again and seeing the melancholy look on her face, frowned.
“What’s wrong beautiful?” He asked and took her hand into his and interlaced his fingers with hers. She shook her head quickly.
“Nothing, Josh. I’m just enjoying this tour. It’s incredible. These are places I’ve only seen on television … and here I am!” He smiled brightly.
“You know none of these places are worth shit compared to just being here alone with you.” He squeezed her hand. She pulled his hand up to her mouth and kissed it. He smiled at her again and then turned his attention back to the road. From Wilshire, Josh turned onto La Cienega Boulevard and headed towards the Santa Monica Freeway. Karen settled back into her seat and took in the sights. She pulled Josh’s hand into her lap as he drove. A song came on the radio and he sang along with it. She smiled when she heard his voice drift past her, it was the first time she’d heard him sing live. She felt a wave of tingles shoot through her and she turned and watched him. It was the most beautiful voice she’d ever heard! If he knew she was staring he didn’t let on. He sang on without a care. When he finished she clapped and he looked at her.
“You’re silly.” He said with a laugh.
“You’re damn good.” She said. He shrugged.
“I guess so. That’s what they say.”
“Well they are right.”
“Pfft.” He said and waved her away.
“Where are we going?” She asked. Josh pulled into the parking lot of Venice Beach. “OoooOOo …” Karen exclaimed. “A beach!” Josh parked the car and opened his door. Karen got out and Josh closed the door for her securely locking the car and then setting the alarm. He took her hand and pulled her down the walk towards the beach.
“This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.” He said as they walked through the white sand. The waves lapped at the shore, kids ran around squealing with delight and woman and men alike sunbathed. The sun warmed them as they walked slowly through the hot sand. “It’s also where they filmed Baywatch.” Karen nodded.
“Ahhhhh …” She said. Josh led her to a path that led away from the ocean to a series of small waterways where gondolas floated by sporting colorful umbrellas to shade the riders from the heat of the sun. He walked her up onto a bridge that overlooked the canal and led into the ocean. They leaned down on it and watched the boats float underneath them. Karen sighed. It was the most relaxing and calm thing she’d ever done in her life. She looked over at Josh who smiled at her.
“What are you thinking?” He asked. She smiled.
“How beautiful this all is.” He nodded and pressed his lips together.
“I will agree with that.” He turned, leaned back against the handrail and pulled Karen into his arms. She fit neatly against his chest. “It wouldn’t be nearly as nice without you here.” He said and kissed the top of her head.
“It wouldn’t be nice without you here either, well of course then I wouldn’t be here …” He chuckled. She squeezed him tightly. He held her that way for some time and then he dragged her back down to the beach but on the other side of the pier where they found a comfortable rock and sat down on it. Josh pulled Karen into his lap and wrapped his arms around her. She nestled back into his arms and they sat content. The day dwindled on and the sun was approaching the ocean. They sat together, quietly and could almost hear the hissing of the sun sinking into the water. The sky had turned from blue to gray to burnt orange with a little yellow and red mixed in. Josh kissed the side of her head.
“Wow.” He sighed. “That’s about the most gorgeous sunset I’ve ever seen.” She sighed against him and felt a chill in the air.
“It’s the most beautiful one I’ve seen, that’s for sure.” She turned her head up to him and he kissed her. They sat kissing, her hands wrapped around his face, holding him there. They nibbled at each other’s mouths until they heard a couple walk past and mumble, “Get a room.” They pulled apart and laughed. As they left their warm perch Karen began to shiver from the nippy ocean air. Josh did his best to warm her with his arm around her shoulder. They jumped into the car and Josh turned on the heat as they sped back to the hotel.
“We should just go back to your place, Josh.” Karen said as they entered the hotel room once again. Josh tossed his keys down on the credenza in the hallway, set his overnight bag on the floor, and headed for the refrigerator.
“I don’t want to, I wanted to stay here with you.” He retrieved their glasses from the bedroom and poured the rest of the champagne into them. “It’s a nice hotel and they have a fabulous breakfast.” Just then Karen’s stomach growled. She chuckled at herself.
“Well okay then!” She said as she kicked off her shoes and headed for the bathroom. When she came out Josh was waiting for her on the couch with the drinks. He patted the couch next to him.
“Come, have a sip of champagne, it’ll warm you up.” He said handing her the glass as she sat down next to him. They clinked the glasses together then sipped.
“I need a shower.” Karen said. Josh smiled and then gave her a serious look.
“Well go on then and shower. I’ll wait here for you.” She laughed and got up.
“Yeah, okay. You wait right here.” She called as she walked off towards the bedroom where she grabbed a smaller bag with toiletries in. Josh waited until he heard the water running and Karen washing to strip himself of his clothes and head for the bathroom.
They lay engulfed in the huge bed and cuddled.
“This is a freaking huge bed.” Karen said. Josh giggled.
“I know, it’s crazy isn’t it?”
“Have you ever been here before?” Karen asked timidly, she didn’t really want to know the answer but asked anyway.
“No, never have.” He said. “I have always wanted to though. Thank you for making that wish come true.” He said and kissed her.
“You’re welcome.” She said sleepily. It had been a long day and she’d gotten more ‘exercise’ then she had in months, years! They made love again in the shower and then afterwards Josh took her bottle of lotion from her and rubbed it all over her body. It had relaxed her so much she felt like she had melted into the covers. She then put on a tee shirt and crawled into bed. When Josh snuggled in next to her he yanked the tee shirt off and threw it across the room. “There will be none of that ‘pajama’ thing in this bed tonight.” He said with a wink. She giggled and curled into him. They lay together, arms and legs entwined, Josh stroked her arm lightly until he heard her breathing become deep and regular and he knew she was asleep. He reached backwards and clicked off the light by the bed and settled in.
Josh slept for a while but the woman who lay in his arms had not only his mind awake but his body as well. He gently slid his arm from underneath her neck, careful not to wake her and then lay on his side leaning on his elbow, his hand against the side of his head and stared at her. She lay sleeping peacefully on her back, her eyes closed, mouth parted slightly and she was breathing rhythmically. He had taken back multiple times what he’d said about her internal beauty, he’d said that January had external beauty whereas Karen had internal beauty … he was now changing that. Karen was beautiful inside and out. He reached forward and touched her cheek. She smiled very slightly but didn’t wake. He had known her from the pictures she sent him but when he actually saw her in life he couldn’t believe how ravishing she was. Her playful smile, her radiant green eyes, her girlish mannerisms … they were all part of a wonderfully put together package. How and why she’d not been captured by some other lucky man he found baffling. At that very moment he didn’t care. She was right there, next to him, resting peacefully and now he wanted her again. The throbbing hardness between his legs had reminded him. He woke up to it. He had to have her. Leaning up he pulled the cover from her body and flicked his tongue over her nipple and watched it stand at attention. He drew it into his mouth and sucked on it. She uttered a soft moan but didn’t wake. He reached down and with his fingers gently parted her thighs and slid his fingers between her legs. She was wet and ready. Josh felt his belly flipping with excitement. He used his other hand to hold her breast while he sucked her nipple like a baby. He could take no more. He pulled the covers off of her and got up onto his hands and knees. Crawling over her he parted her thighs with his knees. Instinctively Karen opened herself for him and as he entered her slowly, became aware of what was going on.
“What are you doing?” She whispered sleepily as she draped her arms over his shoulders. Her eyes flickered open and she smiled slightly. “MmmMMmm …” She moaned as he made love to her slowly.
“I couldn’t help myself.” Josh said and bent his head to her neck. He kissed it and then nibbled at it.
“Looks like you did a fine job of helping yourself.” Karen teased and then moaned at the sensation that spread from her shoulder to her breasts and then her thighs. He grunted softly and kept biting her. She slipped her fingers into his hair, the soft curls wrapping around them as he moved himself in and out of her. Josh paced it so it would last this time. The other times they had made love he was hurried, anxious. It had been quite some time since he’d known the insides of a woman and even if he’d wanted to he wouldn’t have been able to make it last. Karen lay back and closed her eyes, fingers stroking his curls, enjoying the ride. He moved up from her neck to her chin, his tongue drawing a line along her chin line and then kissed the sides of her mouth before devouring it. He kissed her with passion, fevered from the feeling in his loins. The pressure was building quickly. He moaned into her mouth and sucked her tongue deeper into his. As he climaxed he kissed her deeply and a low groan emanated from somewhere inside him. He pumped himself in and out of her as he drained and with it went any energy he may have had. Josh rolled onto his back and sighed. Karen yawned, leaned up and glanced at the clock. She squinted to try to read it.
“What time is it?” She asked. Josh pulled her back into his arms and cuddled her. She curled into him resting her hand on his chest and lightly toyed with his chest hair.
“It’s 2:30.” Josh said and then closed his eyes. He felt at peace. Karen draped her leg over his thighs. He turned his head and kissed the top of hers. “Time for sleep.” He whispered and felt her body relax against his. Her breathing became regular long before his and just when he was worried that he wouldn’t sleep at all that night felt himself drift off.
Karen’s eyes flickered open. She could see cracks of bright sunlight peeking in through the openings in the dark drapes that Josh had pulled over the massive windows the night before. She breathed deeply and stretched then rolled over and faced Josh. He smiled at her.
“What are you doing awake already?” She asked and smiled brightly back at him. His eyes curled into crescent moons.
“I was watching you sleep.” She leaned up and kissed him. “You’re gorgeous when you’re sleeping.”
“That’s because my mouth is closed and I’m not saying something stupid.” He laughed and tucked down a few of her stray hairs that were sticking straight up. “Yeah, I know, absolutely fabulous in the morning aren’t I?” She patted down her hair and made a face. He laughed again.
“You are!” He reached out for her and pulled her closer. “And quite sexy.” He raised his eyebrows at her.
“Ya think so?” She said and ran her hands down his furry chest to his belly where she found him at attention. “Woah.” She said and wrapped her hand around it. He looked into her eyes as she stroked him.
“Well that’s mighty nice of you, woman.” She unwrapped her fingers and slid her palm down the front of it and then took his balls into her hand. He gasped. “Oh, baby.” He moaned and lifted his leg to allow her full access. She squeezed them gently and ran her finger towards the back. He sighed. She eyed him as she moved further back with her finger. “Hey, hey, hey …” He chastised and then laughed as she grinned at him. “Don’t make me break off that finger.” She laughed heartily and moved her hand back forward then feigned gasping in shock.
“You would do that?” She said. He winked.
“Yes ma’am I would have to. Ya see, that door back there is an exit and not an entrance.” Karen burst out in giggles and fell backwards on the bed. Josh pounced on her and held her down. He held his hands up in front of him, fingers curled as if to turn knobs. “Are you ticklish?” He asked, leering at her. She clamped her lips closed and tried desperately not to laugh. She shook her head and then giggled. “I don’t believe you.” He said and grabbed at her sides. She giggled and kicked her feet. Seeing that she was, in fact ticklish he tortured her sides some more until she snorted and couldn’t breathe then he stopped and flopped down next to her and pulled her into his arms. He smoothed her hair back from her face and let her catch her breath.
“Want to make love?” He asked her in a French accent?
“Before breakfast?” Karen asked.
“I was thinking of you as my breakfast.” He winked and kissed her. She slid her arms around his neck and pulled his mouth down on hers.
“You up for it?” She asked as she pulled away. He smirked and pulled her up on top of him.
“What do you think?”
That morning they checked out of the hotel.
Josh scooped a spoonful of sugar into his coffee and stirred, his spoon clanking against the sides of the mug. They sat at an umbrella’d table at an outdoor café down the street from the hotel. Karen handed him the cream, he poured it in and then stirred again. The weather was absolutely perfect. Karen had always heard about the weather in California, never too hot, never too cold and she had expected it to be nice but this was way more then nice. The sky was a very cool, very calming shade of pastel blue and the sun was a hazy, yellow ball in contrast. A slight breeze wiped away any threat of heat that might occur. The palm fronds on the trees flapped in the wind and made the sound of many hands clapping. They sipped their hot drinks as they perused brochures over breakfast.
“Wow, there’s a lot to do here, Josh.” Karen sighed, flipping the booklet closed and opening another.
“See anything you like?” He asked, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs. She looked up at him and smiled.
“Why yes I do.” She said softly. He blushed and looked down then back up at her demurely, his large, brown eyes dusky.
“Other than that.” He sipped his coffee. She looked back down at the brochure again.
“Oh.” She said casually then bit her thumbnail. “Well, I would love to see some fabulous Hollywood homes, those really, really big ones! And there are art galleries …” He smiled. She was like a kid in a candy store but there wasn’t enough hours in the day to do everything she was listing off.
“Decide on a few things because I want to take you into the studio for a little tour today and I have to check in with some people so they know I’m still alive.” He hadn’t taken one single phone call yesterday and was dreading turning it back on but he knew he had to before all hell broke loose. “I have to turn this damned phone back on so be prepared.” She looked up at him.
“Do it now.” She said and blinked at him.
“I don’t wanna.” He smiled.
“I don’t care. Your family is going to worry.” He made a face.
“I’m 24, and in case you hadn’t noticed I’m a big boy now.” She smiled when he winked at her and then raised his eyebrows, one at a time.
“You are?” She asked quickly. “Oh thank God! Jail isn’t a friendly prospect.” He laughed. “Turn on your phone, Josh.” He sighed and pulled it out of his pocket. He flipped it open and pushed the power button. It rang in his hand.
“Dammit!” He muttered and answered it. “I’m fine. I had a day off. I told her to clear my schedule. Doesn’t she listen?” He grabbed the spoon off the saucer under his coffee cup and mindlessly tapped it on the table. “Well I told Bonnie to clear my schedule until Monday. No, I’m not doing it. I have plans and I’m not altering them for that. Well, you’d better.” He said with a derogatory laugh. “I’m planning on stopping in today. I have a guest. Yeah. She’ll be here until Sunday afternoon so don’t even think about booking me for anything until Monday. No, Monday. Monday, I’ll do it Monday.” He sighed and looked past Karen across the street where people bustled by with packages in their arms already. Shopping starts early in California. Some people consider it their job. He rolled his eyes and looked away. “Brian, any other time I do whatever you want, whenever you want it. This is only three days I’m going to have for myself.” Karen glanced up at him and frowned. She was filled with regret at having made him turn the phone on. Well if he hadn’t it would only continue to get worse. She reached across the table and covered his hand with hers. He turned his hand and grasped hers then smiled forcefully at her. “Thanks, I appreciate that. I will. I swear I will. Yep, Monday.” He said and closed the phone ending the conversation then slid it onto the table. “What an idiot.” He sighed and shook his head. “I told Bonnie to clear my schedule for this weekend two weeks ago and then Brian goes and schedules me for a radio interview tomorrow night in Arizona.”
“I’m sorry sweetie.” Karen said. He waved her away.
“Don’t you dare be, this has nothing to do with you.” He finished his coffee and poured another cup from a carafe on the table.
“Yeah, it does because if I wasn’t here you could do all the things you needed to do.” He looked up at her and stared.
“If you weren’t here I would be the saddest man on earth.” She smiled.
“Awww …” He smiled sweetly then sipped his coffee.
“So what are we doing?” She closed the booklet and tossed it aside just as the waitress brought their food. Josh dug in hungrily.
“I’d definitely like to see that sunset again.” Karen said. Josh nodded.
“Yeah, that was fantastic. Okay so we know what we’re doing at 7, now what about the rest of the day?” Just as he finished his question the phone went off again. Josh sighed and answered it.
“Hey.” Chris said.
“Hey bro.” Josh said and took a bite of toast.
“Where the hell have you been?” Chris asked.
“With a woman.” Josh said in a Neanderthal tone and then laughed as Chris laughed.
“No, really.” Chris said. Josh sighed.
“You think I can’t get a woman?” Chris laughed again.
“It’s not that dummy, you have been the poster boy for purity lately.” Josh almost spit out his coffee. He swallowed then coughed.
“Not funny.” He said.
“Well if the condom fits, wear it.” Josh laughed. “So is it Karen?”
“Yep.” Josh said and smiled at Karen who gave him a puzzled look. He held his hand over the mouthpiece. “It’s my brother.” He told her. She nodded.
“I called you yesterday. You didn’t answer. I even went over to your place so I could interrupt you and embarrass her.”
“You’re a jerk,” Josh said. “But it didn’t work, huh huh huh …” He retorted in a French accent. “Foiled your plans!” Chris laughed.
“I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner tonight?” Josh looked over at Karen.
“I don’t know, let me ask her.” He covered the phone again. “Want to have dinner with Chris?” Karen was filled with a feeling of panic and fear and then it was gone. As much as she wanted to meet his family she was nervous and afraid to.
“Do you want to?” She turned the decision back on Josh who nodded.
“Yeah.” She smiled.
“Okay then.”
“Yeah, okay we’ll do it. We’re going to the Rose.” Chris laughed.
“You’re a demon. Why do you do that to girls?” Josh feigned shock.
“What? Girls love it! Don’t they?” Chris was still laughing.
“Oh yeah, girls love it when you stink like garlic for days at a time.” Josh smiled at Karen who smiled back.
“Well if they eat it too then we both stink and no one notices anything out of the ordinary, right?” Josh laughed with Chris.
“Damn, no wonder you were always the one who got all the girls in high school!”
“Pfffft!” Josh said and then snickered. “That’s right.” He said. “And don’t you forget it.”
“Okay fine, I’ll meet you at Rose at 5. I’m going to call for a res or we probably won’t get a table.”
“Who are you bringing?” Josh asked.
“Erin.” Chris stated. Josh cringed. He didn’t like Erin very much. Chris had been dating her on and off for a few years. They’d break up then get back together, break up and reunite. It was one of the reunited periods. She was always flirting with Josh and touched him when she thought he wouldn’t notice. It made him uncomfortable and though he’d never brought it up to Chris, he was sure he had noticed.
“Well okay then, 5 it is. Bring your breath mints.” Josh added then hung up. Karen was finishing her breakfast and looked down the block.
“Something wrong, sweetie?” Josh asked tickling her fingers with his. She smiled at him.
“Not a thing.” She said. He got up from his place on the other side of the table and sat down next to her, slipping his arm around her shoulder. He began looking at the booklets that lay strewn on the table surrounding her mostly empty plate.
“Okay, so let’s plan the day.” He scooped up the pamphlets and arranged them in a stack. Karen turned to him and finished her coffee. She held out the cup while Josh refilled it with his free hand. “First we’ll put the top down on my ride and then I’ll take you on a little star home tour, then we’ll head over to the Japanese Garden, then I can take you to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre where all the stars have their handprints. After lunch we’ll go into the studio for a while then whatever else you want to do.” Karen got all excited and hopped up and down in her seat. Josh laughed and bobbed his head to follow her bouncing.
“Oh my God, I wanna see this!” She exclaimed and pointed the book towards him.
“What, what, what?” He asked and took the booklet from her. “La Brea Tar Pits?” She nodded excitedly. The La Brea Tar Pits were one of the world’s largest and most famous fossil digs. Thousands of dinosaur bones had been discovered there. Josh shrugged. “Yeah, if there’s time. Otherwise we’ll do it tomorrow first thing.” She sighed. She should have taken off more time. She didn’t know how she was going to go home Sunday and not feel like her world was collapsing. She looked away a little pensive. He turned her face back to his, his eyes searching hers. “Well we can do it today then, it’s not a problem.” He said and kissed her lightly.
“Oh Josh, it’s not that.” He pulled her into his arms.
“Then what is it?” He asked. She buried her face into his chest and let a few tears slide down her cheeks and seep into his shirt. He stroked her hair.
“I don’t want to leave Sunday and then again I do.” He held her tightly.
“I know. I feel the same except for the ‘do’ part. I know it’s the kids for you. For me, I will have nothing once you’re gone.” She looked up at him and sniffled. He wiped the wetness from under her eyes with his thumb.
“You have your CD to finish and personal appearances, all that stuff will keep you plenty busy.” She said sitting up and checking to make sure her mascara hadn’t run.
“Yeah sure, I’ll be busy but will it stop me from thinking about you and missing you? Not hardly.” He choked back his own tears then. She took his hand and kissed his fingers.
“We have to talk about this.” She said. “About what we’re going to do.” He nodded.
“Yes, we will.” He said, matter of fact. “But for now, babe, let’s make like a tree …” He called the waiter over to pay the bill.
Josh put the top down on the Porsche and then the two of them drove around Hollywood with a map they bought indicating star’s homes. Karen ‘ooooh’d’ and ‘ahhhh’d’ over the expanse of the mansions. They even saw a few celebrities. When Karen was bored of the famous people tour they headed over to the Japanese Gardens. When they entered the gardens, Karen felt a sense of serene awe. There, open before her was what was called the ‘dry’ garden. It was a series of gravel and large stones. The gravel symbolized the water and the stones, the earth jutting up out of the water. The gravel had been raked into wavy patterns to exemplify the waves of the oceans. Josh slipped his hand into Karen’s and they walked slowly along the path with admiration at the work that had gone into it. Once they passed through the ‘dry’ garden they entered the Lake and the Islands, which was much greener and quite lush. The sweet smell of grass and spice of the pine hit them. Josh breathed deeply through his nose.
“That’s mighty fine isn’t it?” Karen nodded in agreement. They walked slowly through the Islands section and onto the bridge. They sat down for a while on a wooden bench under a weeping peach three and listened as the crickets chirped out a song. Josh turned to Karen and touched her face with his fingertips. “So how do we work this out?” He asked softly. She frowned.
“I don’t know. If it weren’t for the kids …” She trailed off.
“I think you and the kids should just move out here.”
“I wish that could happen.” She sighed.
“I know.”
“There’s so much to consider. And I would never take the kids away from their father.” She sighed again, much heavier this time. “I wish I had an answer.” He took her hand into his.
“Well, you always have your weekends when the kids are away. You could hop a jet on Friday night and we would have all day Saturday and most of Sunday together.” She nodded. It was something, anything. “We’ll figure it out.” He said and sighed. “I could always come by you too.” She looked at him and squinted her eyes. She wanted to make sure he really meant that.
“You would do that?” She asked.
“Of course!” He said with a laugh. “Why wouldn’t I? I have to meet the kids eventually, right? I mean, love you, love your kids!” She felt like a giant weight had lifted off of her and her heart pounded. She threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
“Oh, Josh!” She exclaimed. He laughed and hugged her back. He glanced down at his watch.
“Well, it’s almost one, how about we go have lunch and then hit the studio?” She stood and pulled him up.
“Yes!” She said excitedly. They walked back through the garden and out to the car. Josh brought her to a quaint little café where they sat at a table outside again. It was just too beautiful outside not to. They had a simple lunch of sandwiches and then Josh brought her to the studio. As they parked, Karen noticed how sickeningly nervous she was. She wasn’t anxious to meet anyone in Josh’s life and not because she didn’t care but because of their age difference. She knew others would be able to tell that she was older then he was and she didn’t want to embarrass him or herself. Josh locked the car and set the alarm as they headed into the building. Karen’s palms were sweaty and she was shaking nervously. Josh grabbed her hand and noticed immediately. He turned toward her.
“Are you okay?” He asked. She looked up at him timidly and smiled.
“Yeah.”
“You sure?” She nodded again.
“I can tell you’re nervous.” He said. She sighed and looked away. “What is it?” He turned her face back to look at him with a finger under her chin.
“I’m just scared to meet your ‘people’.” He laughed and licked his lips.
“My people?” She pushed him.
“You know what I’m talking about.” She snapped. He pulled her into his arms.
“Don’t be nervous. You are a beautiful, intelligent, well spoken woman. You’re very charming. You charmed me and you’re going to charm them. They are just a bunch of dorks anyway. Now meeting my parents, that’s another story.” He said with a laugh. She felt horror shoot throughout her whole body just thinking about it. Josh noticed her flinch at the mere mention of it. “You see, so this isn’t so bad in comparison, is it?” She sighed and shook her head. He wrapped her arm inside his and he escorted her inside the building. Josh was greeted by everyone as he entered. He pulled her straight to his studio and introduced her to the men that were there. She smiled shyly and shook hands.
“So what brings you here to California, Karen?” She blushed and glanced at Josh. He was sitting on the edge of the sound board laughed at something the tech said.
“I came for Josh.” She said quietly. And then immediately felt stupid.
“Ahhhh …” David Romano, one of the producers said nodding his head.
“He’s a great guy, very personable.” She nodded in agreement.
“He’s a lot of fun.” She said. “And very intelligent.” He went back to the board and began pushing buttons.
“Yeah, he’s fun and very smart. And damn good at what he does.” She smiled.
“Yes.” She said. The conversation had run out and David went over to Josh and Emmanuel. They talked together a moment and laughed then Josh returned to where Karen stood. He took her hand and pulled her out of the control room and into a soundproof room.
“I’m going to play the piano and David’s going to record it. I want you to sit here with me while I do.” He sat her down across from him and next to the piano. Josh warmed up his fingers on the keyboard with a series of exercises. Karen sat, fixed to the chair, excitement running all through her. There was something to be said for listening to beautiful music on the stereo or in your car, but hearing it live was exhilarating, exciting, it brought out more emotion then you could almost take and you begin to weep … that’s how Karen felt at that precise moment. The music fills you and you become one with the music. As Josh began to play Karen felt tears building in her eyes. She blinked them away and focused on him. He closed his eyes in concentration and played the most beautiful music she’d ever heard. He stopped and then made a sign to David in the booth indicating that he was ready. Josh put on headphones and then on cue he began to play. Karen watched in wonder as he plunked out a song without a hitch. When he was finished, David called to him.
“Do it again.” He said.
“What was wrong with it?” Josh called back.
“The end of the first half. You have to speed it up just a bit.” Josh sighed and glanced at Karen. She had a huge grin that spread across her face. He smiled at her and then glanced down at the piano waiting for David’s cue. He suddenly started playing. When he finished, David gave him the thumbs up.
“One song closer to completion.” David said. Josh smiled.
“I’m going to mess around in here with Karen.” He said.
“What?” David asked and then laughed.
“Not that you perv!” Josh said and called Karen over to the bench. She sat next to him. He put his arm around her and kissed her. “So what do you want to hear?” He asked. She shrugged.
“I don’t know. I hate to say this but I haven’t really listened to much of your music.” Josh elbowed her and laughed.
“Well then I’m going to play something I think you might like.” He dipped his head to the keyboard and began to play. He played a beautiful introduction to a song and then he started to sing in Spanish.
Come sobrevivir?
Como calmar mi sed?
Como seguir sin ti?
Como saltar sin red?
Con ese adios tan salvaje y cruel
Me desojaste la piel
La enternidad en final se quedo
Y un desierto es...mi corazon...
Ay si volvieras a mi
Ay si volvieras a mi
Seria feliz otra vez
Pero hoy te vas
Y no hay vuelta atras
By the time he got to the last note, Karen sat transfixed by his awe-inspiring voice. She was a mass of goose bumps and had tears in her eyes. Never in her life had she heard anything more astonishing then this young man’s very mature and fantastic voice. He turned to her. She blinked and then burst into a huge smile.
“Well?” He asked, finally. She shook her head slowly.
“That was …”
“Josh.” David Romano’s voice interrupted the moment. Josh sighed and answered. “I just wanted you to know I recorded that.” Josh made a face at Karen.
“Well, okay then.” Josh said and turned back to Karen. “You were saying?” Karen tried to talk and just shook her head again.
“I am … amazed.” She muttered. Josh smiled at her and licked his lips.
“So you liked it?” He put his fingers on the keys and just played something random. Karen sat, like a child at a Barney show, eyes wide, mouth open. “Anything else you’d like to hear? Maybe happy birthday to you?” He laughed and she hit his arm lightly.
“Oh! I know!” She said, remembering the song she’d heard the night before she met him. “How about My December?” He smiled brightly and rubbed his hands together.
“The lady would like to hear My December. Your wish is my command.” Long, slender fingers poised on the keys, he began to play. As he sang it for her she watched him. His face was calm, smooth, yet full of emotion. He brought life to the words and they truly meant something deep inside her. She thought back to when she’d first heard it, how sad she was. She almost blew it. She thought he had deceived her and yet the only thing he was guilty of was protecting himself. He didn’t know her, he didn’t know she’d never heard of him. She couldn’t possibly have known why he did what he did. Until now. Karen closed her eyes and felt them sting with tears. Looking back on her life, especially the last few months, she thought she had it all - and now … she would be frightfully empty without him. He had brought her back into existence, gave her sustenance. She had been on the edge of loneliness, teetering. Josh had brought warmth and light to her world. And to him she was grateful. By the time he’d sung the last note she was crying. Josh turned to her.
“How was … hey!” He said, putting his arms around her and pulling her into his chest. She sobbed against him. He stroked her hair and whispered, “Shhhhhhh …” She clung to him, holding his shirt tightly in her fists until she felt the waves subside. She sat up and smiled tearfully at him. He used his shirt to wipe away the dampness from her cheeks. “Now what was that all about?” He asked with a pensive smile. She shrugged.
“Josh.” David said, once again interrupting.
“Dammit, David, what?” Josh snapped, agitated.
“That one too.”
“Fine, okay, whatever!” He got up from the bench, yanked off the headphones and tossed them down on the piano. He pulled Karen up and slid his arms around her. She searched his eyes for understanding and found compassion. “Now, tell me.”
“I’m not sure. It was just so beautiful …” He bent his head and kissed her lightly.
“I won’t press you to tell me, just know, whatever it is you can talk to me about it.” Karen nodded.
“I know.” Josh pulled her out of the studio and stuck his head in the door of the control room.
“David.” Josh said. David turned around and looked at him.
“Yes, Josh?”
“I’m leaving.” Josh said and then walked out.
“Okay, Josh. Bye Josh.” They heard David call as they exited the building and into the waning sunlight. Josh checked his watch, it was 4:15.
“We might have enough time to get back to my place, clean up a bit then get over to The Rose.” Josh said, putting the car in gear and zipping off down toward the highway.
The place was packed. Josh stood patiently in a corner of the waiting area with Karen, one arm draped casually over her shoulder. The noise in the place was incredibly loud but there were violinists playing Italian music and that was enough to make Josh want to wait without complaint. He kept scanning the crowd for Chris. It was only five minutes after five but he wasn’t usually late. Their table wasn’t ready yet anyway. He sighed and turned his head towards Karen. She was staring off at nothing in the distance. He pulled her close and kissed her temple. She smiled and turned to him. He gazed down into her malachite eyes. They sparkled tonight and that pleased him. She had been so melancholy at the studio and though she offered little explanation, he could only guess it had something to do with missing the kids. He couldn’t relate but he did understand. He smiled at her.
“What?” She asked, suspicious. He shook his head and looked back into the crowd. He then spotted Chris making his way inside the restaurant and sauntering up to the hostess. Before he could catch his attention the hostess pointed to where Josh and Karen now stood. Chris looked over and nodded. Josh gave him the finger and saw Chris laugh. He was dragging behind him a young girl who wore her chestnut hair in several braids that were banded together at the top of her head. Josh clicked his tongue and sighed. What else would that girl do to get attention? The two approached Josh and Karen.
“Chris,” Josh began, his arm tightening around Karen’s shoulder possessively. “This is Karen.” Karen smiled and held her hand out to Chris who took it and, instead of shaking it, turned it upwards and kissed the back of it.
“Pleased to meet you Karen, and thank you for bringing my halfwit brother out of the funk he was in.” Karen giggled and Josh shot him a dirty look. “This is Erin.” Chris indicated the shy, blue-eyed girl who stood behind him. She nodded at Karen.
“Good to meet you.” She said, her voice deep, not at all fitting for how she looked. Erin turned to Josh. “Hi, Josh.” She said softly. Josh nodded to her and pulled Karen closer protectively. He wasn’t protecting Karen at that point, he was more worried about himself. Josh noticed she had a new piercing on her face. Her nose had been pierced but now she sported a hoop in her eyebrow and one in her lip. He shook his head absently.
“Erin got her lip pierced yesterday.” Chris said to Josh turning Erin’s face towards him. Josh nodded and tightened his lips to a line.
“I see that.” Josh said and then cleared his throat. Erin stared at him hoping for a better, more elaborate response.
“It’s quite sexy.” Chris gushed and, while holding her face kissed her full on the mouth. Josh looked away. He couldn’t stand it when his brother showed off like that, especially in a crowd. Not that anyone was paying attention but he was still self-conscious about it.
“Ya think so, Chris?” Josh said after a few minutes of their nauseating lip-locking. “I got a question for you, Erin.” Erin turned her full attention to Josh. “Why is it that you want to take that pretty face of yours and punch it full of holes?” She frowned and pursed her lips. Chris sighed. He knew what was coming and didn’t like it. “You want to be a badass or something? Why do you do it only half way then? If you’re going for the badass look why not go all the way? You’re standing there in a lacy, revealing top and earrings all over your face … badass you’re not.” She looked down and Chris made a face.
“Knock it off Mr. Rogers.” Chris said and hugged Erin to him tightly. “I like it and that’s all that matters.” Karen poked Josh in the side, hinting that he should be more kind. Josh looked down at her and she frowned at him. He moved his eyes in Erin’s direction then back at Karen. She slipped her arm around his waist and pinched him.
“Fine. I’m sorry. Yeah, the lip is cool. Just be careful you don’t squirt water out of it or anything.” Josh said and laughed. Chris sighed.
“You may be older then me but you’re a much bigger dork.”
“You forgot better looking and way more talented.” Chris looked at him deadpan, sucking in his cheeks and then turned his attention on Karen.
“You tolerate him very well. I certainly hope for your sake you have a better sense of humor.” Karen smiled and then looked up at Josh.
“Actually he’s the funny one in this relationship.” Josh stuck his tongue out at Chris and Chris rolled his eyes.
“Great. This ought to be a really fun night.” Josh pushed his shoulder and Chris laughed. “So, Karen, did you see some cool things today?” Chris asked her, changing the subject. Karen nodded.
“Oh yeah, star’s homes, a little bit of Hollywood, the Japanese Gardens.” Chris smiled and raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, those gardens are great. Erin and I were there not too long ago, weren’t we sweetie?” He turned to Erin who had been focused on Josh. She smiled and nodded.
“Yeah, gardens. The sand part is really cool.” She said absently. If she thought Chris didn’t notice she was mistaken. His brother was one of the major reasons for their on again, off again romance. She constantly denied her attraction for him yet there she was drooling and staring. Just then Chris heard his name being called over the loudspeaker and dragged Erin up to the podium. Josh and Karen followed. They were seated in a booth towards the back of the restaurant where they ordered a couple of pitchers of beer. Karen sat back against the seat and sniffed deeply. It smelled like how she would imagine Italy might smell, garlic and sage, basil and rosemary. Josh sat back and leaned against her. He poured a glass of beer for her and one for him then set down the pitcher.
“So, Karen …” Chris began after he’d poured glasses of beer for both he and Erin. “How do you like L.A.?” He took a gulp of the beer then belched. Erin sighed and gave him a dirty look. Josh was right, Karen thought to herself as she watched Erin, she wasn’t pulling off the ‘badass’ look very well.
“I think it’s warm and wonderful. Kinda like being in Disneyland only it’s not confined to one space. It’s all over.” Chris laughed.
“Yeah, that’s it in a nutshell … Disneyland. And most everyone is Goofy.” Josh laughed at his joke. “So Josh told me how he met you, that’s really kinda cool and maybe a little scary. He told me just before you got here. My mother had already said something about you to me but Josh gave me the whole story.” She nodded after taking a drink of her beer.
“It’s pretty amazing and yeah, it was scary. I was more worried for Josh then for me.” She chuckled and Josh sighed.
“Get outta here.” He said, teasing.
“I was kinda worried about you, him being celibate for what?” He glanced at Josh and shrugged. Josh looked down, embarrassed. “A month? I was afraid he’d have you chained to the bed.” Chris laughed at himself and Josh just cleared his throat audibly and obviously.
“It should probably have been the other way around.” Karen said and Josh chuckled. Chris laughed and pointed to Karen.
“I like her!” He said. “Mom won’t but I do!” Karen smiled halfheartedly. At least she had won over one member of the Groban family. “You know, Karen, no matter what he looks like now, my brother is the biggest geek in all of California. He pulls off the ‘hot singer dude’ look pretty good but deep inside he’s a dweeb.” Karen looked at Josh. He raised an eyebrow and shrugged.
“What can I say?” He said. “And look at him,” He indicated towards Chris. “He looks the dweeb part but oh, what a cool dude he really is.” Chris giggled. Erin snuggled up to him and kissed his shoulder.
“No, he doesn’t look like a dweeb, he’s hot.” She said. Karen noticed then the similarities and differences between the brothers. Josh was stunning, his curls and large brown eyes, his chiseled features and delicious, protruding lower lip. Chris, on the other hand, wore his wavy hair cropped close to his head, his features were more babyish and his eyes weren’t nearly as pronounced. The smile, however was the same. He wasn’t stunning, per se, but he was handsome. They ordered dinner, Josh asked for the same thing he always had, Karen ordered the same. They ate and joked, Chris and Josh becoming characters in Star Wars and bantered back and forth, dueling with light sabers fictitiously. Erin stared at the two of them, grinning and giggling. She held onto Chris but her eyes fell upon Josh and never left him. If he noticed he didn’t let on. When the time came and the meal was over, Josh and Chris argued over who was going to pay the bill. Josh won. They walked together out to the valet who ran to retrieve Josh’s car first.
“What are you guys doing now?” Chris asked at Erin’s urging. Josh glanced towards the fading sun and then down at Karen who smiled.
“We’re going to Malibu beach to watch the sun set.” Chris smiled.
“How romantic.” He mumbled. Erin clutched at his arm.
“Can we join you?” She asked timidly. Josh glanced quickly at Chris and then down at Karen. It was obvious to him that she would have rathered be alone, he felt the same.
“Well …” Josh began cautiously. Chris took the hint.
“I wanted to head over to The Highlands and check out who’s there tonight. But thanks for asking.” Erin sighed heavily. The Highlands was a hot night spot for L.A. Chris had been a regular there lately. Though Erin had been there a few times she really wanted to head off with Josh. The valet brought Josh’s car to a screeching halt in front of them. Josh leaped back in fright mixed with anger. The young man leaped out of the car and held up Josh’s keys to him. Josh snatched them from his hand.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” He seethed. The valet shrugged and, not even expecting a tip, ran off for Chris’ car. Chris laughed loudly.
“My God, don’t touch his baby!” He hollered. Chris turned to Karen. “I’m so sorry Karen, no matter how close you two get you’ll always be number two.” Karen grimaced. Josh held open the car door for her.
“I don’t like the sound of that.” Josh laughed. Suddenly it dawned on Chris what he’d said and he burst into a laugh.
“That was really funny!” Chris said. Josh bounded over to the driver’s side.
“Yeah, you’re a riot. Don’t quit your day job.” He told Chris as he got into the car and sped off.
Josh spread the blanket down on the sand and he and Karen lay down on it. He spread the other blanket over their legs for warmth. During the day the temperature was moderate and quite pleasant but once the sun set the air took on a harsh chill. Josh and Karen lay down and cuddled. The sun was halfway into the ocean by the time they got settled onto the sand. The air had grown cold and the wind had picked up speed. When they had gone back to Josh’s place before dinner they had both changed into sweaters. Since Karen hadn’t thought to bring one, Josh gave her one of his and marveled at how delicious she looked in it. She had changed into a gauze skirt that was light and bouncy and a long sleeved white button-down shirt. Josh gave her a black zip-up sweater to go over it. It didn’t look half bad, she thought as she scrutinized herself in the mirror. Now as they lay there on the ground and watched the blazing tangerine sun sink low she was glad she had put it on. Josh lay on his side perched up on his elbow while Karen snuggled into his body and reveled in his warmth. He set the arm he had been leaning on down and slipped it under her head then leaned over her more. Bending his head down to her lips, he kissed her.
“Mmmmm …” She said. “Garlic.” He smiled.
“Yeah, you too, it’s awesome.” He leaned against her and kissed her with passion. She slid her arms around his neck. He kissed her mouth, his tongue exploring then he moved down to her chin and then her neck. After nibbling at her a moment or two he went back to kissing her lips. As the sun sank into the ocean spraying rainbows of light throughout the California sky, Josh and Karen lay engulfed in each other on the beach, they had a front row seat but the sky took a backseat to the passion they were feeling at that moment. There was no one else, nothing around them just the water that lapped up on the shore and the sound of the wind as it swirled around them and then moved on. Karen trembled in his arms. Assuming she was cold he pulled the covers up higher and held her tightly. He let his hand wander down her back to her hips, over her buttocks and down her leg. He used his fingers to pull up her skirt and slid his hand underneath it. Her skin was soft and cool to his warm touch. He ran his fingers up and down her thigh and then up to the elastic leg of her panties. He slid his fingers underneath and tickled her behind. She moaned against him softly and raised her leg, leaning it against him. He ran his finger downward between her thighs and lightly stroked her. He felt her breathing speeding up, she breathed heavily through her nostrils as he dominated her mouth. Encouraged by her response he delved his fingers deeper into her and heard her whimper as her excitement grew. He played with her insides and then tickled the outsides until she moaned deeply and pressed his hand tightly against her, he slid a finger inside and felt her quivering madly as she climaxed. When she relaxed he pulled back.
“I want to make love to you right here, right on this beach.” He panted, his eyes boring deeply into hers, his lips parted and damp with desire. Karen looked nervously around. It would seem deserted but she knew that there were always prying eyes. She had never been so bold as to do anything like this in a public place much less the act itself …
“I don’t know Josh …” She said hesitantly. He pressed his hips into her, showing her how badly he wanted her. She moaned.
“Come on …” He urged guiding her hand to the rock hardness that struggled under his jeans. She rubbed him through the fabric and he moaned. “Please, baby.” He begged. She didn’t know, she was afraid of being caught but there he was, hard and ready and begging her for it. How long would it take to get back to his condo? He bent his head into her neck and bit at her sending tingles that radiated throughout her entire being.
“How long would it take to get back to your place?” She asked softly, her eyes closing against the feeling of his mouth as it sucked her neck erotically. He rolled on top of her and began rubbing himself against her belly.
“Too long.” He mumbled and reached down to unzip his jeans. He wiggled them down his hips.
“Josh …” Karen protested as he slid her skirt up her legs and pushed her knees apart. He guided himself to her opening where the crotch of her panties stood guard and in the way. He hooked a finger in the side and pulled them down. “Josh, what if we get caught?” Karen said nervously looking around. Once her panties were safely out of the way he entered her quickly and held himself there. She gasped at the heat and enormity of it.
“Just lay there, still, and don’t worry it won’t take me long. You’ve got me so worked up I am going to come any second …” He closed his eyes and rocked his hips against her gently, he was barely moving but the sweet softness of her was enough to bring him to climax. He kissed her as he emptied his load and then moaned. He backed out quickly and zipped himself up. He helped Karen on with her panties and then leaned over her again. He stared into her face, she was calm with pleasure and fatigue. He pursed his lips and kissed her lightly then let out a deep breath. “God, baby, what you do to me.” He sighed, satisfied.
“Me? What I do to you?” She snorted. “I don’t think so. I’ve never done anything like this in my life Josh. You bring out the beast in me.” He smiled devilishly. “And I knew we could have been caught yet I wanted it so bad I let you. Wow!” She said and then smiled. They lay there together another half an hour or so before they packed up the blankets, shook out the sand and carted them back to the car where they shuttled back to his condo. After a short cleansing shower they curled up in bed, the sound of the waves on the shore playing in the background on Josh’s stereo. Karen went to sleep immediately and Josh was close behind.
Karen thought she heard a sound that jarred her out of a sound sleep. She sat up and looked around. There was light in the room but it was still somewhat dark. She almost didn’t remember where she was at first and then, seeing Josh sleeping peacefully next to her she remembered, she was at his condo. What time was it? She rubbed her eyes and then she heard it again. A rapping sound that echoed throughout the house. She shook Josh gently.
“Josh, someone’s at the door.” She said softly. He moaned and pulled her down to him. She heard the rapping again. “Josh!” She hissed. “Someone’s at the door. He sat up and looked around.
“What door?” He asked groggily.
“The front door, I’m guessing.” Karen said and pushed his shoulder. “Go see who it is.” He leaped out of bed without thinking and slipped his jeans on. He ran out of the bedroom and to the front door while he zipped.
“Shit!” He said catching himself in the zipper and doubling over. He untangled himself and went to the door as the rapping came again. He swung it open and frowned. “I got out of bed for this.” He said and walked into the dining room running a hand through his hair and planting the other on his hip. January Jones pushed the door all the way open and stepped into the entryway. She closed the door behind her and approached slowly.
“Well hello to you too, Josh.” She said with a sly smile. He just stared at her. “How have you been?” She asked as though they had just been apart for a few weeks.
“Jan, what do you want? I hadn’t really expected to ever see you again.” He leaned back against the dining room table and folded his arms across his bare chest. She eyed him up and down and then smiled. He looked fabulous standing there, hair matted and tousled, face unshaven, for a few days it would appear.
“You look great. Life’s been good to you.” He glared at her and said nothing. “I wanted to come by and see how you were. Don’t I even get a hug or a kiss?” He burst out in a laugh then.
“Oh that’s priceless Jan, absolutely priceless. What do you want from me? I’ve got things to do.”
“Oh yeah, I saw that. What’s her name, Josh?”
“Who?” Josh feigned innocence.
“The woman. Don’t play stupid with me Josh, your picture is plastered everywhere!” His eyes grew wide and it was then he remembered his picture had been taken with Karen Thursday night after they left the restaurant.
“Why do you care?” Her face changed from angry to hurt in a matter of moments.
“Because, Josh, you’re still mine. I want to know what you’re doing with another woman while I’m away making a movie?” She stomped her foot. Josh sighed and made a face.
“Oh please, January, you’re making the star of the movie. And speaking of pictures plastered everywhere … how about that? You never even called me back to explain you just left me, cold.” She moved closer to him, tears filling her eyes. “And I had to hear all over the entertainment news that I was the ‘former’ boyfriend of January Jones. I can’t even tell you how much you hurt me.” She now stood directly in front of him and reached out to touch him. He backed away from her hand.
“I’m sorry, Josh. Can you forgive me?” She had tears in her eyes and one fell down her cheek. He looked coldly at her and warmed when she began to cry. He put his arms around her and held her as she sobbed.
“Yeah, January, I can forgive you. But what I can’t do is accept you walking in here and thinking we can just take up where we left off. Things …” He glanced towards the bedroom where Karen lay sleeping. “Have changed.” She froze and backed away from him. “And you never even called me, not to break up, not to explain, nothing. I sat here like an idiot waiting for you and looking like a dumbass when all those reports of how you and Jude were an ‘item’ were all over the TV. It was all over my own message board as well. You made me look like a fool.” She opened her purse and pulled out a newspaper clipping and tossed it next to him on the table.
“How do you think I feel reading shit like that?” She spat at him. He picked up the article and first saw the picture of him and Karen outside the restaurant with a caption that read; She’s Out Of My Life. The article read that while his ex-girlfriend flaunted her stuff in Australia with leading man Jude Law, crooner Josh Groban was out and about with a mystery woman identified by Groban as only Karen. He smiled when he saw the picture of them. She was so pretty and she looked so scared. Her eyes were like saucers. He chuckled and then looked up at January when she cleared her throat.
“What do you want me to say, Jan? That I love you with all my heart, I want you back, I want you to have my children?” She nodded and sniffled.
“It is, Josh, I want to come back.” She rushed up to him and he put a hand out to stop her.
“I’m very sorry. I said I could forgive but I really can’t forget. I’m with Karen now.”
Karen sat in the bedroom and cowered on the bed. She heard the conversation between Josh and another female voice and didn’t want to interrupt. She had a dreadful feeling in the pit of her gut that something was going on out there and didn’t want to intrude. She sighed and flopped backwards on the bed. She was sure she didn’t even want to know what was going on and with whom. Now at the loud mention of her name, her ears perked up. She got up and slipped on Josh’s shirt he’d tossed carelessly on the dresser the night before. She buttoned it up most of the way and listened at the door. Lightening flashed in the sky outside the bedroom window and momentarily lit up the room.
“And who is this ‘Karen’ woman anyway? From the looks of her she’s one of your mother’s friends.” Josh stood up and away from the table.
“Knock it off. Your insults don’t mean a thing to me. Karen happens to be the woman I love. And it’s time you face the fact that you’re not welcome in my life anymore.” She clenched her fists at her side and scowled at him.
“You loved me, Josh, remember that? Before you met me you were nothing and after you will be nothing too. I could be good for your career, I’m starring in a movie with Jude Law for Christ’s sake!” She hollered angrily. Karen came flying out of the bedroom and stood next to Josh.
“What’s going on out here?” She hissed. Josh put his arm around her.
“Don’t worry about it, Karen, Jan was just leaving.” January looked Karen up and down and then snickered.
“So this is the competition.” She said with a smirk. “Not much competition I think.” She turned to Josh. “You are dating one of your mother’s friends, aren’t you?” She spat at him. He leaned forward as though he was going to smack her, Karen pulled him back.
“I think you need to go.” She said to January.
“Don’t you dare tell me what to do, you’re not my mother. Although I’m sure you’re somebody’s.” Karen felt her temper flare.
“That’s it.” She said. “Josh won’t hit you but don’t think I won’t. You’re a spoiled bitch, that’s all you are. You treated him like shit and proved to him just now what I’ve been telling him all along. You are a mean bitch. Now get out!” January laughed.
“I’ve spent more nights in that bed and in that shirt then you’ll ever know, honey. And when Josh is done being breastfed by his new mommy then you’ll be just like me, cast aside.” Karen stepped forward and pushed her backwards. Josh tugged at the arm of his shirt.
“Karen, don’t.” She pulled her arm out of his grasp.
“Whatever.” She spat at January. “Now get out!” January seethed, her face turned a ripe tomato color and she frowned.
“How dare you touch me!” She hissed.
“If you stay here any longer you’ll see what I’m going to dare to do next.” January turned on her heel, walked out the door and slammed it behind her. Karen began to tremble as she heard the door close and leaned down on a dining room chair. Josh rushed to her and took her into his arms. She pushed him aside angrily and went back into the bedroom where she discarded his shirt and began to get dressed. Josh followed her.
“What are you doing, Karen?” He asked, hands on hips.
“I’m going back home. I never should have come here in the first place. It was obviously too much to believe in the fairy tale romance. And now the whole world is going to be calling me your mother. I don’t think I can take it.” He tried to stop her as she was putting on her socks.
“Stop it!” He ordered. She pulled away from him and tried to stick her foot into the sock but her hands were shaking too hard to manage. He grabbed the sock and threw it across the room. “Karen! Stop it!” He shouted. She stopped and frowned at him, breathing heavily through her nose as her lips were drawn tight. He was frowning too, lips pursed in anger. “Why are you leaving? I don’t want you to go. You can’t possibly think I want to rekindle anything with her do you?” Karen held his gaze as long as she could withstand and then looked down.
“I don’t know, Josh, do you? She way more suited to you then I am. She kept calling me …” The tears began then. “Your mother’s friend and your mother.” She sobbed into her hands. He rushed to her and pulled her into his arms.
“Karen, please.” He said as he rubbed her head softly. “There’s always going to be some asshole who’s going to say something awful about me. Whether you’re with me or not. If it isn’t you then it’ll be someone else. The tabloids are like that. Look how they reacted to Demi Moore and Justin Timberlake.” She sniffled.
“That was Ashton Kucher.” He nodded.
“Right.” He said, remembering January’s boyfriend before him. He sighed. “Please, Karen. I want you to stay. I want to be with you no matter what anyone says about us. It’s always going to be something but if we stick together we can ride it out.” He turned her face up to his. She held her eyes closed not being able to bear looking at him. “Look at me.” He told her. She shook her head. “Karen …” He rubbed her cheeks with his thumbs gently. “Look at me!” Her eyes flickered open and they were so brilliantly green in contrast to the red of her whites that Josh couldn’t help but to kiss her lightly. “We’re in this together. It’s too late to stop now. I love you.” He whispered and kissed her warm lips once more. She rested her head against his chest and heard his heart beating. Karen wrapped her arms around him and squeezed tightly. He stood up and pulled her with him where he undressed her again slowly and guided her to the bed. She crawled in and waited for him to take off his pants and crawl in next to her. Lightning outside lit up the room and thunder boomed off in the distance as they lay in each other’s arms silently. Josh stroked her bare arm lightly, relaxing her.
“Are you sure this is what you want, Josh?” Karen whispered. Josh tried to answer but his voice came out in a squeak. He cleared his throat.
“More then I’ve ever wanted anything.” He said softly and laced his
fingers with hers.
“You’d better be damn sure about that. I have a feeling we’re in for quite a bumpy ride.” He pulled his hand from hers and touched her face softly.
“Maybe I like roller coasters.” He said with a soft laugh. “If not I’m sure we’ll find out. I can take it, Karen, really I can.” She sighed and relaxed against him. She hoped so. They lay there in bed while lightening flashed and thunder boomed louder, the storm getting nearer. Rain whipped through the wind and pattered against the window. It was 8 in the morning but for them felt a lot earlier. And between the pattern of the rain and the crash of the thunder it wasn’t long before they both fell back to sleep.
Josh kissed her eyelids and watched them flicker open. He smiled. She reached upwards and slipped her arms around his neck.
“Good morning.” He whispered and kissed her. She pulled him down on top of her. He leaned on his elbows and slid his fingers through her hair. “Feeling better?” He asked. She nodded and kissed his lips a few times quickly. “Now the plan for the day, being as it’s raining out and I doubt we’re going to the tar pits, is to stay in bed, order take-out and fuck. How does that sound?” She giggled.
“Sounds like pure torture.” She said. He smiled and his eyes roamed around her face before settling back in on her eyes.
“That’s what I’m here for, to torture you. So what should we do first?” She rolled her eyes upward in thought.
“Hmmmm … I think we should start by staying in bed.” He smiled.
“Okay, followed by a romp and then what?” She slid her hands up the back of his neck and wrapped her fingers in his curls.
“Well … followed by more staying in bed. However,” She untangled her fingers and pushed at him. He backed up and Karen pushed him onto his back and kneeled over him. “To start the day, I’m going to be on top.” He grinned and pulled her down for a deep, passionate kiss. She pulled back up and he took himself into his hand and held it up for her to slide down. Instead of doing that right away she let him rub himself against her lips, they were very slick and it slid back and forth easily creating a tingling sensation in her thighs. She closed her eyes and leaned forward, her hands holding on to the headboard for support.
“Oh God, Josh.” She moaned. He smiled and continued to rub his erection on her, causing her to moan and her lips to swell. The wetness increased. As she drew nearer to orgasm, she leaned heavily against the headboard and her breath coming in short spurts. “Don’t stop.” She panted. “I’m close …” He watched her face as she moaned and then gasped. “Oh Josh!” She groaned and leaned her head down on her arms. Right at her peak he thrust the head of it inside her. She sat down on him, leaned forward and moaned. He raised his hips burying himself further inside. She cried out with pleasure and leaned down heavily on him. Grabbing her by the hips Josh rocked up and down until she came down from her orgasm and her spasms receded. Karen leaned forward and kissed him fully on the lips. “Oh baby …” She moaned. He pushed her back up and held her hands in his.
“My turn, ride the pony baby, ride it …” He said thrusting his hips to get her going. Slowly she moved up and down on him using his hands as a brace. Josh lay his head back on the pillow and closed his eyes. He smiled slowly as a warm, lustful tingling sensation began in his groin and slowly spread. Then as he felt his climax building his face became awash with desire, his nostrils flared and sweat began to collect on his forehead and in the middle of the matting of black hair on his chest. Karen watched him. It was a side of a Josh that most people wouldn’t ever be lucky enough to experience much less enjoy like she did. He had a raw sensuality about him at that moment, he was no longer the sweet, innocent little Josh that the general public saw when they looked at him, he was the animalistic man with a deep desire to fulfill his lustful wanton and would do anything at that point to get it! He gritted his teeth and groaned. “Oh baby, oh Karen … Stop baby …” He pulled her to a halt. She looked at him, questioning. “Hop off.” He said. She did as he told her to then, getting up and onto his knees pushed her over onto hers and quickly entered her from behind. She gasped as the bulk of him filled her, he pulled back and entered her again. She dropped her head to the bed and hugged his pillow.
“Oh Josh, God …” She moaned as he held her by the hips and banged into her, desire heightened by feeling her bottom against his belly.
“You like that, Karen?” He asked, panting in between words. “I know I like it. Tell me you like it!” She moaned in response. All her nerve endings were on fire and she could barely speak.
“Yes, Josh, yes …” His breathing sped up and he became acutely aware that he was on the brink of orgasm. He slowed slightly but took longer strokes until he could hold out no more and exploded with fury causing Karen to cry out in satisfaction. Josh fell over onto her back and wrapped his arms around her holding her tightly to him. He was breathing heavily and she could feel his heart pounding through her back. “Woah.” She sighed. He kissed her protruding spinal column and then released her to fall forward onto the bed. He left her there to make a run to the bathroom. When he returned he slid back into bed under the warm covers and held Karen tightly.
“I love it when you talk dirty to me.” She said as he searched her eyes. He smiled.
“Do you?” She nodded and licked her lips.
“I like talking dirty to you!” He leaned down and kissed her. “Okay so I have some things I wanted to talk to you about. “ He began. She stared out the window through the shears and watched the palms outside the window sway in the harsh wind of the storm that was still lashing L.A. He stared ahead thoughtfully before speaking. “I was wondering about your kids.” She dreaded the ‘kids’ talk but now it was on the floor – an open discussion.
“Yes. What about them?” He cleared his throat before speaking.
“How do they feel about me?” She shrugged.
“Not sure, Josh, they don’t really know you. They are quite curious though.”
“That goes for me too.” He sighed.
“Well how do you feel about them?” He pursed his lips thoughtfully.
“You know so far I’m okay with it. It’s weird, Karen but I suppose most younger guys would run at the prospect of a girlfriend, or a wife that has older children from a previous married but I’m not afraid.” Wife? She was taken aback. Did he just say … wife? She rolled the word around her tongue and decided she almost liked the feel of it.
“That makes me happy. But you’ll have to meet them before you make a final decision. He asked her to tell him about them and before she did he got up and made them some coffee. As they sipped their hot beverage Karen rattled on and on describing each one, their likes and dislikes. He listened intently, his head on her lap. She played with his curls as she talked. He was still and he was silent. After a while Karen leaned over him and called his name softly. He didn’t respond at first. Assuming he was asleep she continued twirling his hair in her fingers until she, too felt sleepy and mellow. Holding up his head she scooched down on the bed and snuggled into him. He pulled her into his arms and sighed against her.
“Your kids sound wonderful.” He said softly into her ear. “We have to go out soon and shop for them.” Just then his stomach grumbled loudly. Karen chuckled softly. “And get something to eat, obviously.” After just a few more treasured moments of snuggling Josh and Karen got up, showered and left the condo. It was well after noon and the sky was beginning to clear; instead of being a sullen, titanium mass of angry clouds it was just steel gray and clearing.
“There’s hope for this day yet.” Josh said and asked Karen’s opinion on putting the top down. She shook her head.
“Let’s not.” She declined. He drove her to a quaint shopping center on the edge of town. He refused to go to the popular places, too many well known people milling about and many, many onlookers. He wouldn’t have said he was claustrophobic but the thought of getting caught up in all that Hollywood hoopla was too much for him. They browsed the stores and tried to find just the right things for the kids. Josh found a sparkling diamond LA pendant and wanted to buy it for Kelly. Karen gasped at the price of it and shook her head adamantly no.
“I cannot let you do that!” She protested.
“You’re not the boss of me.” He teased and fished his wallet out of his back pocket. Karen grabbed his hand and looked him in the eyes.
“Josh, really, it’s too much.” He eyed her and tightened his lips.
“It really isn’t, Karen. She will love it, I know she will.” After several futile attempts at declining the gift, Karen lost the argument and gave in. Josh had it wrapped up and they left the store. She’d better appreciate this, Karen thought to herself as they walked on. They lunched on the terrace of Chili’s restaurant and then walked more. They were headed into an electronics shop when Josh’s cell phone went off. He sighed when he saw it was his mother and answered it hesitantly.
“Hi Josh.” She said matter-of-fact. He flinched at the tone.
“Hi Mom. I was going to call you today.” He lied and cleared his throat.
“Sure you were. Why do I have to hear it from Chris what you’re up to?” He sighed and followed Karen around the store hanging back just enough.
“Chris? I don’t know, Mom, Chris likes to cause trouble I guess.”
“At least I know where Chris is and what he’s doing.” She huffed.
“Sure you do, Mom. You know exactly what he’s up to at all times. Have you seen his piercings?” Josh taunted, knowing full well Chris had none. He heard her gasp.
“What?” She said. “No, he hasn’t told me. Well it would seem that both of my sons are up to no good these days.” Josh rolled his eyes and leaned against a wall rack full of fancy cell phone face plates.
“Mom, why do you assume it’s no good?”
“Joshua, we’ve had this conversation before. Remember Canada?” He blew air out of his mouth and closed his eyes.
“Yeah, but Mom, things are really different between Karen and I then they were with Jan and I. Karen’s different. If you give her a chance I know you will like her.” There was silence on the other end which usually was a bad sign.
“Sure, maybe we can hash over our high school proms or what she was doing the day you were born …”
“Mom, please …” He pleaded.
“Josh, this is something that’s going to have to be taken slow. Your father and I just can’t accept you dating a woman almost as old as we are … and with children no less!” He took a deep breath.
“Just say you won’t disregard it all together.” She sighed.
“We won’t. Why don’t you bring her over for dinner tomorrow night.” He felt a slight glimmer of hope arising and leaned up off the wall.
“Wow! Did I just hear you say that?” He asked. Lindy sighed again, this time more pronounced.
“Yes, Joshua, you did.”
“Well we can’t come.” He said miserably.
“Why?” Josh eyed Karen who was looking with interest at the latest innovation in IPODs.
“Because Karen has a flight around 2. She has to get back to Ohio.” He sighed, woeful.
“We’ll have breakfast then.” He smiled as she held one up to him, headphones stuck into her ears.
“I’ll ask her and call you back, okay?” Josh hung up and headed over by Karen. “This would be perfect for Ryan.” He said as she plucked the phones off her ears and set them on his for a listen. She shook her head again knowing that he would do what he wanted to do anyway. The IPOD carried a hefty price tag and she felt abdominal pains when she thought about Josh buying it and Ryan losing it or breaking it which Karen could almost guarantee without a doubt would happen. She was right, Josh bought it. As they left the store, Josh worried about how to ask Karen if she’d like to have breakfast with his parents tomorrow. He frowned and furrowed his brows in thought. She wouldn’t go for it. She was frightened enough to meet David, and his mom? Oh man, he sighed. He pulled her into a small boutique for little girls. She looked through items on the shelf. He cleared his throat.
“Hey, uhhh, Karen …” He began and his mouth suddenly went desert dry. She turned and looked at him, eyes opened wide in question.
“Yes?” She turned her attention back to the Little Princess line of items that adorned the store.
“We were invited to have breakfast with someone tomorrow and I wanted to know if you would like to attend?” She eyed him and then smirked.
“Who?” She asked, suspicious, her eyes going from saucers to slits in a millisecond. He smiled nervously.
“My parents.” She felt her stomach drop like a rock into her belly and her face fell in fear. Her nerve endings were sizzling and she panicked. Fearing she was going to pass out, Josh grabbed her arm. “Karen! Are you all right?” She felt her lunch backing up into her throat. Josh slipped an arm around her.
“I’m okay, Josh, I’m okay. I don’t know what to tell you about breakfast though.” He knew how she felt, he was nervous too and they were his parents.
“Lets just do it, we’ll make it a quick one and then she’ll be happy she’ll have met you.” He pulled her close. She looked up at him, fright evident in her eyes.
“Well if you think it’ll be all right.” He smiled and kissed her nose.
“I’ll think you’ll be fabulous!” He said. While Karen picked out some things for her little angel, Carlie, Josh called his mom back and made plans to meet at their house the next morning. On the way back to the condo, Josh dragged Karen by the jewelry store where they bought the pendant for Kelly. Josh told Karen to wait in the car and he would be right back. He sprinted into the store and Karen watched him. She bit the nail on her thumb nervously. She was very unsure about meeting Josh’s mom. She sighed. His mother was going to naturally be very skeptical of their relationship, especially if she knew how much older Karen was then Josh. Maybe she did know already, would Josh keep something like that from his mother? They seemed to have a decent relationship. She couldn’t imagine he was anything but open with her. She watched as Josh ran back to the car and got in. He smiled at her.
“What was that all about?” She asked, interested but somewhat distracted. He held his hand up and a small platinum chain dangled from his fingers. He smiled.
“I was thinking that the chain that we got for Kelly on the other necklace might be too long so I got a smaller one.” He held it out to her and she took it.
“You are so sweet.” She sighed and leaned over to kiss him. He held the back of her head and kissed her voraciously. Her body responded instantly and when he pulled away she smiled. He started the car and they drove off. They ended up back at the condo. Josh changed into his pajama pants and an old tee shirt and gave Karen an oversized tee shirt of his to put on. She went to slip on a pair of sweat pants and he yanked them out of her hands. She frowned and eyed him.
“Why’d you do that?” She asked. He stuffed them back into her suitcase and smiled.
“No pants.” He said and pulled her into his arms. He slid his hand up the back of her thigh and underneath the shirt where he found the soft skin of her lower back and then kissed her. “I want easy access.” She giggled.
“You’re naughty.” She teased. He raised his eyebrows at her.
“No, I’m lazy.” He retorted then swept her up off her feet and carried her to the bed where he set her down. “Slide in under the covers and I’m going to put on a movie for us.” She did as she was told.
“Hey!” She called to him as he left the room to search the second bedroom he’d turned into a media room for the movie. “What about that live concert of yours you said I could watch?” He came back in with a handful of DVD boxes. He held them up to show her then tossed a few of them into her suitcase. He then opened three and put them into the multiple DVD player. He ran back into the kitchen and poured them both a glass of white wine and brought them back into the bedroom where he handed Karen a glass and then set his down on the nightstand before crawling into bed next to her. He stuffed a wad of pillows behind his back and sank into them before pulling Karen into his arms. She pulled the covers up over their legs and snuggled into his chest. Josh aimed the remote at the large screen TV and flicked it on. He cued up a movie and they settled in to watch. The sun was just getting ready to set and tinted the room a vibrant orange color. Josh squinted at the window and then frowned.
“I can’t see the frigging TV.” He said as he sighed, moved Karen over and then got up to pull the navy drapes closed against the bright peach light. He put his hands on his hips and stared at the TV screen. “There.” He said, satisfied, and crawled back into bed where he pulled Karen to him and settled back once more. Josh started The Princess Bride movie and Karen laughed. He squeezed her. “You’ll love it.” He said as the movie started. Karen turned sideways against Josh and ran her fingers up his shirt where she teased the hair on his chest as she watched the movie. He lightly stroked her arm and took sips of his wine now and then. They had gotten nearly all the way through it and Karen had slid her arm around his waist when Josh grabbed her hand and slid it down his belly and into the waistband of his pajama pants. She reached down and found him hard and throbbing. She gasped.
“What the hell is that?” She asked, scolding him in a teasing manner. He moaned softly as she wrapped her fingers around him and stroked gently. He pointed the remote at the TV and paused the movie.
“I’m sorry baby, I can’t lay this close to you and not have a raging hard on.” Karen’s belly tingled as she stroked him, he oozed a bit from the tip. Letting go of him she pulled herself up to her knees and drew his pants downward, exposing his massive maleness. It was flushed red from the blood engorging it. Karen straddled his legs and then, holding it outward from his body brought her mouth down around the head sucking off the liquid that had seeped from it and pooled down the side. He gasped audibly and leaned his head back. “Oh God …” He moaned. She ran her tongue around it, watching his delight and then sucked it into her mouth. He sucked in air quickly as her mouth pleasured him. He wrapped his large fingers around her head and stroked her hair as his cock stroked the insides of her mouth. She sucked gently and then drew him out. She grinned at him. He puffed out his cheeks then blew air out of them. “Lucky you stopped or you would have been drinking it.” He coughed nervously. She winked at him, licked her lips and then delved back down, tasting, licking, sucking him in. He groaned. “Oh Karen, baby, oh!” He held her head as his balls tightened and prepared to unload. His body arched inward, his muscles tense. His fingers tightened around her and squeezed as his he tried desperately to hold back, and finding he couldn’t he released and shot into her mouth. She gulped him hungrily as he moaned. He squirted a few times and then as the waves of satisfaction subsided he flopped back on the pillows and sighed. She kneeled up and smiled at him. He smiled back lazily. “I want to fuck you but I can’t move.” She laughed and pulled the tee shirt over her head and tossed it aside. Karen pulled his off of him and then, still on her knees crawled up to his lap. She held him upwards and then slid herself onto him, emitting low gasping noises. He scooted down a little on the bed so he was more horizontal. Karen found she had more access to him that way and, holding onto his shoulders rode him slowly, leaning forward, rubbing herself against him, moaning. She closed her eyes in concentration and felt Josh run his hands up from her hips to her breasts. He kneaded them gently feeling her nipples tighten to little points under his touch. He closed his eyes too, concentrating on the pleasure he felt from the waist down. He wasn’t sure he could climax again so soon after but he didn’t want to disappoint Karen. She was busy pleasuring herself, using him, rubbing herself until she felt her arousal peak. She whimpered as she felt a wave of hot needles rush through her thighs, into her belly and settle in her chest as her velvety insides shuddered in response. Josh felt her clench around him and suddenly he was throbbing against her, draining him of what little he had left. Karen leaned forward and dropped her head onto his shoulder. He ran his hands up and down her bare back. “Oh God.” He sighed. She kissed him and then rolled off of him and onto her back. “I can’t move.” He said again and laughed. Once more curled into Josh’s arms he started the movie and they watched it until it was over. “Want another one?” He asked.
“Can we eat in between?” She asked running her hands up and down his chest. He scooted down closer to her and kissed her mouth.
“You want me to eat you in between?” He teased and then bit her neck causing her to first cry out then giggle.
“Yes!” She squealed. He crawled on top of her once more …
****************************************************************************
Josh lay quietly and watched the sun as it rose and though his bedroom windows faced west, filtered bits of light coursed into the room and settled. Karen lay sleeping next to him, her arm slung across his chest, face nuzzled into his neck. He tucked her closer into him and she moaned softly and rubbed her nose. He smiled. She was like a child when she slept. Her face was perfectly peaceful and without care. He wondered then what she might have been dreaming about and if, perhaps it may have involved him in any way.
“Just move your shoes …” She mumbled and then was silent. He sighed. Apparently the dream didn’t involve him, it was a child he speculated. He thought about her children. He was anxious to meet them but fearful as well. What would they think of their mother dating a younger man? It wasn't her youngest he worried about, it was the two older kids who would have an opinion. There was so much he could do with them. A smiled spread across his face. He would have so much fun taking them places, Disneyland for one. He loved amusement parks, he hoped they did too. He ran his fingers through Karen's silky hair. Her arm instinctively curled around him. He thought about the day that lie ahead, the meeting with his mother, taking her to the airport. The meeting with his mother he felt he could handle, it was ending this blissful ride he'd been on with Karen for the last 3 days that was going to kill him. He wasn't looking forward to it coming to an end abruptly. He had been so lonely lately and she filled that void nicely. She was different than any other girls he'd dated in the past. It had to have been the maturity level. There was just something about her, the way she laughed heartily at his jokes and how she didn't spend hours and hours in the bathroom getting ready to go somewhere. She was what she was and either you liked her or you didn't. Josh did. He felt a familiar stirring in his groin at the mere thought of her. She was simple and yet complex. She let the unimportant things roll right off her back while the most important things, like her family, job, and integrity came first and foremost. He hoped he was on that list of the most important things in her life because she was certainly on his. He felt a pang of regret in his belly when he thought about seeing her off today at LAX. What would he do without her? Could he suffer through another long distance relationship? He thought about Jan briefly and her gall to come there and try to pretend like she was innocent. His mind went back to when Karen, tiny and seemingly calm gave January a good shove, nearly toppling her backwards. He burst into a giggle then stifled it quickly. He had been fearful at the time that January might fight back but he should have known she was a coward and would run away. He was ready to step in had she gotten rough with Karen. HIS Karen. He lightly ran his fingertips up her arm and then down again. She sighed. His thoughts turned to his mother. He was proud of her to ask them over for breakfast. He didn't think she'd even try to get to know Karen but apparently he'd been wrong. He smiled. She and Karen could be good friends, he thought. They shared some things in common, much more then any girl he would have or could have! He looked down at his sleeping angel and sighed heavily. He wondered if she would ever want to get married again, or have another child. He pictured what their children might look like and smiled. Of course they would have his curls, they would have to, wouldn't they? Probably her green eyes and bright smile. Wow! They would be gorgeous, he thought and the stirring between his legs had grown more evident. He scooted down more on the bed and arranged Karen so her face was turned towards him. He looked at her, his eyes gently caressing her face. Her lips were puckered and he leaned forward and kissed them lightly. Suddenly her eyes flickered open and she smiled.
"What are you doing awake already?" She asked picking up her head and glancing at the clock. He kissed her again and then took her hand and slid it down his belly.
"All of me is awake." He said. She smiled sleepily at him and wrapped her hand around him. He groaned as she squeezed gently then stroked him. "I loved watching you sleep but I think I love it more now that you're awake." She giggled silently.
"You're silly." She said then lifted the blanket up and scooted down to him. She sucked him into her mouth and applied gentle pressure. He gasped then let out a loud groan of pleasure.
"Oh man, Karen! I can't believe you can do that so early in the morning." She lay her head down on his belly and sucked him, stroking at the same time. "Oh, God, get up here, I'm gonna cum and I want it to be inside you!" He pulled her upwards and then back onto the bed. Spreading her legs with his knees he entered her quickly and with just a few thrusts came shooting inside her. He let out a moan and nuzzled her neck. She wrapped her arms around him stroking his neck with her fingers. He felt a sudden wave of emotion come over and him and tears stung under his eyelids. He closed them tight hoping to ward them off. One tear slid out from underneath and dripped down her shoulder towards her back.
"What was that?" She asked and when he didn't answer, pushed him away so she could see his face. "Hey!" She said and wiped the remains of the tear away. "What's that for?" She asked. He smiled weakly at her and sniffled.
"Nothing. It's nothing." He disengaged from her and padded off into the bathroom. She followed right behind.
"Don't tell me it's nothing when I know it's something." She said pushing open the bathroom door and eyed him standing at the toilet. He looked at her.
"I can't go when you're staring at me." He stated and then wiped his nose with his other hand. She leaned her back against the door jamb and crossed her arms.
"Then you'd better tell me now so you can get on with your business." She tightened her lips to show him she meant it. He sighed and leaned forward against the wall with one arm. He dropped his head down between his shoulders.
"I don't know what's wrong, I just felt sad for a minute." He said softly.
"Mmmhmm." Karen said. "And what else?" He really had to go but with her standing there he couldn't start.
"Can I please tell you after I go, I really have to go!" She sighed and pushing herself away from the door went into the other room where she heard him go immediately. She heard a flush then he came out a few minutes later. Approaching her, he took her swiftly into his arms and kissed her. When he released her she grinned at him.
"You're not getting out of telling me." She said. He wrapped his arms around her and held her tight. "Josh." She scolded. He turned her face up to his where he planted a light kiss on her lips.
"I'm going to miss you like crazy later on tonight." She felt a lump in her throat and tried desperately to swallow it. Her arms tightened around him as he held her.
"I will too, believe me." He leaned his cheek down on her head and rocked slightly. Tears threatened to spill over from Karen's eyes down her cheeks, she fought them with every ounce of energy she had as she buried her face into the soft skin of his shoulder. "Don't start, Josh, I will cry and then it won't be pretty going to your parent's house with a big, red nose and weepy eyes!" She sniffled.
"Well at least we'll look the same." He said softly and tearfully. She held him outward and made him look into her eyes.
"We'll be only a phone call away and you're going to come out soon, right?" He nodded and wiped at his eyes with his fingers. Her chin wobbled as she watched his eyes grow more damp with every second. He pulled her back into his arms and held her. Leaning down, he began to kiss her. Gently, tenderly at first then the kisses became more urgent, fevered. Lifting her up off of her feet he brought her to the bed and made love to her once more before they showered and dressed for the trip to Lindy and Jack's.
They stood at the door, ready to leave. Karen was a bundle of nerves. She had no idea what to expect or how to react to anything that might come her way. Josh was looking for his keys.
“Hey, sweetie!” She called. He answered from the bedroom in the back of the condo. “What are we bringing?” He came out of the bedroom and walked up to her quickly, dangling the keys.
“The damn things were on my dresser. I never put them there.” Karen smiled. “What are we bringing?” He asked, acknowledging that he’d heard what she’d asked. “An appetite.” He said rubbing his belly. She sighed.
“No, you always bring something when someone invites you over to their house. Like a dessert or something.” He pulled her towards the door and then after setting the alarm, locked it.
“Yeah well this isn’t someone’s house, this is my mom’s. She won’t expect me to bring anything.” He slid his arm around her. “Except you.” He kissed the side of her head. The elevator came and they stepped inside.
“We have to bring something, Josh.” Karen said. He leaned against the back of the elevator.
“Like what?” He asked.
“Well since you say she’ll have plenty of food then we should bring her some flowers.” He frowned at her.
“Flowers?” He asked. “She sure won’t be expecting that!” He said stepping out of the elevator and heading towards his parking space. They got in and headed out of the parking garage. “Flowers, flowers …” He mumbled as he turned the opposite way of his parent’s house. He frowned wondering where he could get a bouquet of flowers on Sunday morning at 9:00. He drove past the flower shop and noticed they weren’t open yet. He sighed and kept driving. Finally he happened on a place and parked in front of it. He pulled out his wallet and handed Karen a stack of bills. “You go get them since you seem to know what you want.” She smiled, grabbed the money and headed off into the flower shop. Coming out moments later, she carried a large bouquet wrapped in fine white paper with a gold leaf design. She got in and buckled her seat belt. “Get what you wanted?” Josh asked. She held out the change.
“Yes I did!” She said. He ignored the money and sped off towards the Groban house. They pulled into the driveway of a stately home. Not quite the mansion Karen imagined it would be. Her belly flip-flopped as they got out of the car and the house loomed before them. He started to walk forward and when Karen stood transfixed, he took her hand into his and kissed it.
“Hey,” He said pulling her into him. “It’s going to be good. You’ll see.” She forced a smile and nodded. Josh pulled her up to the door then opened it and went inside. The foyer was elegant with pillars adorned with vases full of sticks and flowers arranged tastefully. Josh kicked off his shoes and Karen followed his lead. “Hello?” Josh called, pulling Karen by the hand towards the back of the house. The smell of bacon and sausage permeated their nostrils and Josh’s belly growled angrily in response. “Woah, am I hungry.” He said to Karen as they made their way back to the kitchen. Karen couldn’t tell if it was the heat of the kitchen or if she was just that nervous as beads of sweat appeared on her forehead and in the palms of her hands. A white-haired woman stood at the stove and turned when Josh entered the room. She smiled and hugged him. Karen couldn’t help but smile when she saw the two together. It was obvious to her that Josh greatly resembled his mother. They shared the same smile. The woman approached Karen timidly.
“You must be Karen.” She said, smiled and then hugged her. Karen smiled back.
“Yes, I am. It is truly a pleasure to meet you.” She said and then held out the flowers to Lindy. ‘These are for you.” Karen said. Lindy gasped and took the bundle from Karen.
“Oh my gosh, these are from Winstedt’s, it’s my favorite floral shop in L.A.” Josh winked at Karen as Lindy took the flowers over to the sink and began to unwrap them. Lindy sighed as she spied the mixture of flowers and looked at Josh. “Carnations are my favorite.” Josh held up his hands and made a face.
“Don’t look at me, it was her doing.” He said and nodded to Karen. Lindy smiled.
“Thank you Karen, I should have known Josh didn’t have anything to do with this. I think in his whole life he’s only brought me flowers three times! And carnations of all things! How did you know?” Lindy began trimming the stems under running water.
“I didn’t.” Karen said. “But they are one of my favorites too so I chose them based on that reason.”
“Well I love them.” Lindy said and then turned to Josh. “Joshua, go get me a vase from the dining room.” She ordered. Josh moved quickly out of the kitchen. “So Karen, how has your trip been?” Karen blushed at the thought of her visit with her son. She had spent most of the time in L.A. in his bed.
“It has been wonderful. You have the most wonderful weather here. It’s getting cold and the leaves are falling off the trees back where I live.” Lindy finished with the flowers, threw out the cut stems and went back to the over when she removed a container of apple cobbler. Josh returned with the vase, poured water into it and set the flowers inside. He then took the vase into another room.
“So where are you from?” Lindy asked taking off the oven mitts and setting them down.”
“Ohio.” Karen answered.
“Ahhhh, Ohio.” Lindy said. “Yeah, fall’s a bit different there then here. I’m not sure I could get used to all the leaves being off the trees for months at a time. It just wouldn’t look right.” Karen uttered a small laugh.
“I would tend to agree with you but I’m used to it by now, nothing unusual there.” Lindy bustled around the kitchen. Josh came back and stole a piece of bacon.
“Joshua!” Lindy barked. He laughed, broke it in half and offered half to Karen. She shook her head. “You can help now by getting some of the food into the dining room.” Josh and Karen helped Lindy take the food from the kitchen to the dining room and then Lindy called for her husband. Jack sauntered into the room and smiled when he saw Karen and Josh.
“Son.” He said and offered Josh a hand. Josh shook it and then introduced Karen to Jack. Jack hugged her briefly. “It’s very nice to meet you, Karen. I would say that Josh has told me so much about you but that’s not true. He’s kept you a secret all to himself.” Karen forced a smile.
“Well, sir, if there’s anything you want to know feel free to ask.” She said nervously. Josh pulled a chair out for Karen and she sat then he sat next to her.
“Where’s Chris?” Josh asked pouring Karen a cup of coffee and then one for himself.
“He’s late, obviously.” Jack said taking the coffee carafe from Josh as he passed it to him. Lindy sat down at the opposite side as her husband.
“I hope there isn’t any food left for him by the time he gets here.” Josh said as he dug in and began to fill his plate with food. Lindy frowned.
“That wasn’t nice, Josh.” Lindy said and began to pass around a bowl of freshly sliced fruit.
“His fault for being late.” He turned to Karen and handed her the fruit. “When Mom cooks it’s so good I tend to overeat.” She took the bowl and served herself.
“It does look so good, Lindy thank you for inviting us.”
“You’re welcome, dear. So tell us about yourself.” Karen almost choked on the melon she was chewing and swallowed it hard.
“Well, I am from Ohio. I work for a company that makes hand soap and I have three children.” Lindy’s eyes opened wide.
“Three?” She asked. Karen nodded. “I had a hard enough time with two boys but three!” Karen laughed softly.
“They can be a handful.” She offered. “I have two girls and a boy.”
“Have you met them, Josh?” Lindy asked knowing full well that he hadn’t. He shook his head.
“No but I’m making plans to visit Karen next week or the week after.”
“Josh you have to get that CD done before you go gallivanting all over the country.” Josh stiffened at his father’s tone. Karen blushed.
“I am Dad.” Josh said. “I’ve gotten a lot done. I’m almost finished with it.”
“That’s not what I hear.” Jack retorted.
“Really? And what did you hear and from whom?” Josh dropped his fork and glared at Jack.
“David Romano is who I heard it from and I heard that you’ve spent less time in the studio then you should be.”
“That really makes me mad.” Josh said, shaking his head.
“Boys!” Lindy said loudly. “We don’t need to discuss this over breakfast not to mention we have company.” Josh picked up his fork again and began to eat, ignoring the look Jack was giving him. They had almost finished breakfast when the front door opened and Chris blew in. He kissed Lindy on the cheek and sat down across the table from Josh and Karen. His hair was tousled, his clothes disheveled, and his face was unshaven. He looked like a younger version of Josh.
“What ditch did you crawl out of young man?” Lindy asked, staring at her son. Chris filled his plate full of food and began to eat like he hadn’t eaten in days.
“I was at a friend’s house and almost forgot about breakfast. It was either come straight here or go home, shower and change and be late.” Chris said. Josh snickered.
“You are late.” Jack said raising an eyebrow at him.
“I would have been here around lunch, Dad, that’s what I mean about late.” Lindy patted his hand.
“Don’t worry about it, Chris. Your dad’s a little grouchy today.” Chris eyed his father and then laughed.
“Today?” He joked.
“Very funny.” Jack said. They finished breakfast and when Lindy got up to clear the table, Karen also got up to help her. She started loading up her arms with plates and bowls.
“Why thank you dear,” Lindy said. “But you don’t have to do that.” Karen smiled and carried the dishes out to the kitchen.
“I thank you but I want to help.” Together the women cleared the table. Karen began to rinse the dishes and stack them in the dishwasher. Lindy eyed her with interest. It was strange actually having help cleaning up. January would watch Lindy work and never offer to help. Karen dug right in and was now doing the bulk of the work. Lindy smiled and pulled out bowls to put leftovers in. The kitchen was cleaned up in record time. Karen had gone into the dining room and retrieved the coffee carafe. “Is there more coffee that I can fill this, Lindy?” She asked. Lindy took it from her and nodded.
“Yep. Let me help you with that.” Lindy filled the carafe and handed it back to Karen. The two women joined the men in the dining room once again. Karen sat next to Josh and he pulled her hand into his. He turned his wrist and looked at the time on his watch.
“Hey, um, it has been a lot of fun but we have to get going. Karen still has to pack for her flight.” He smiled at her. She returned it. Josh pulled her up. Lindy stood and first hugged her son and then Karen.
“It was very nice to meet you, Karen. I hope we meet again.” Karen smiled weakly, not knowing quite how to take that.
“I hope so too.” She said and at once felt foolish. Josh biffed his brother in the back of the head to say goodbye then went to his dad and hugged him. Karen said goodbye to both Jack and Chris then the two of them fled the house for the safety of the Porsche. Josh started the car then turned to Karen.
“Well?” He asked. She shrugged. “How do you think it went?” Karen breathed a sigh of relief that it was over.
“Okay, I guess. How about you?” Josh put the car in reverse and backed down the drive.
“They loved you! Those flowers for my mom were a fabulous idea!” Karen smiled proudly.
“I told you.” She said smugly.
“And you were right.”
They stood, arms around each other, holding on tightly, not wanting to let go as people bustled around them.
“I have to go.” Karen said finally. Josh squeezed her tighter.
“I know.” He said softly. “I don’t want you to.” She smiled at him.
“You’ll never get that CD done if I’m here. Even your dad said so.” He sighed. He knew that too. He had been useless in the studio the last month and thought he would have loved to blame it on something else he knew, deep down, that the reason was his infatuation for Karen. Karen glanced sideways and saw people boarding her plane. Josh noticed too and released her. He took her face into his hands and kissed her mouth.
“I am going to miss you like hell.” He said and rubbed her nose with his. His curls brushed against her forehead and tickled her.
“Me too, Josh, believe me. But I have to get on that plane.” Josh reached into his pocket and then pulled his hand out.
“I have something for you.” He said and held up his hand. A necklace dangled from his fingers.
“You shouldn’t have!” She exclaimed. He unhooked it and slid it around her neck. It was a diamond encrusted ‘J.’ She gasped as she stared at it. “Oh Josh!” She gushed and threw her arms around his neck. He pulled her mouth down on his and kissed her with passion.
“Now you’ll always think of me.” She released him and watched the few remaining boarders heading down the ramp.
“I will always anyway.” She said. “Now I have to go.” She slowly pulled her hand from his grip and walked backwards towards the ramp.
“Karen …” He called. “I love you!” She smiled and waved at him.
“I love you too!” She said, turned, and disappeared into the covered walkway. Josh stood there and watched until the plane backed away and began heading down the runway. He leaned against the glass and a tear slid down his cheek.
