Silent Confession
The insistent pounding woke Kat from a deep, and very needed, sleep. They had all fallen asleep watching ‘Ocean’s 11’, though that was about five hours ago. It was 8:00 AM. With a groan Kat carefully stepped over Edge and Jericho with Benoit passed out on the couch. She finally reached the door and undid the locks, who could be waking her at this hour was beyond her.
Flinging the door aside and rubbing her eyes at the sudden increase in light, she was soon staring at Eric Bischoff. Kat looked at him puzzled. She couldn’t be in trouble already could she? If she wasn’t, she couldn’t come up with a reason as to why he would seek her out so early in the morning.
“We need to talk...” he motioned for Kat to follow him into the hallway, but not before she got the key to her room. He went down to his own room and opened the door, Kat still puzzled and now very suspicious as she went into his room and he closed the door behind them.
He offered her a drink and she politely refused, but did accept a seat when he offered. Pouring a drink of his own, Kat took the chance to make a quick glace around the room.
She didn’t get far when Eric began addressing her.
“Kat, I know you’ve only been here for a couple weeks...” Kat was already afraid of where this was going, “You’re matches have gone well for you, I’m impressed. But one incident was recently drawn to my attention, and I have the feeling you know something about it.” He took a drink and looked at her, he was sure she knew something...if only he could find out what.
Her mind was going over the only thing she could possibly think of. Kane’s hand. She was careful to keep her emotions at a minimal, not wanting to tip him off as to what she might know about it.
He calmly continued, “I’ve been in this business for a fair amount of years. I’ve seen all sorts of stars rise, and fall. I’ve seen more devastating injuries then I would ever like to.” At this point Kat didn’t know what he was trying to accomplish, though part of her was still convinced it was about Kane.
“I also know a faked injury when I see it...Kane’s hand was not crushed by that chair, and I think you knew that. I also think you know what really happened to his hand and that’s why you helped him that day.” Eric was only hoping he had struck a nerve, inwardly disappointed when he got no reaction from her.
Kat sighed, trying to smooth out her slightly tangled hair as she looked at him. She tried to think fast for a somewhat believable lie, “To tell you the truth...I don’t know. A couple days ago I did run into Kane, literally. I noticed the blood and told me it was a nose bleed.” She sighed and rubbed her forehead, “I didn’t think anything of it...plus I wasn’t going to question him about it, and he had already left. That’s the only time I saw him...”
Eric wasn’t sure. Her story seemed legit to him and it’s true that if it had been worse he certainly wouldn’t let her, nor anyone else for that matter, help him. Then what really happened to him?
“Alright Kat...as of tomorrow he’s going to take a leave of absence, give him some time to heal. I also want you to take the day off. If you find out anything, tell me.” He still knew she was holding something from him, but he also knew she wouldn’t give it up willingly. She was too stubborn to do that. For now he would have to be satisfied with her answer, probably the only one he would get.
She nodded to him and got up, he too stood and saw her out and watched her go back to her room. Hearing her door close, he leaned in his own doorway and swirled his drink before downing the rest and going back inside. He concluded water was no substitute for liquor.
Closing the door silently and careful not to wake the sleeping brood, Kat poured herself a glass of water and sat down on a chair. The conversation fresh in her mind.
This wasn’t good.
She only hoped Kane wouldn’t find out, he was already ridiculously paranoid. If Eric talked to him...oh god. What if their stories didn’t match? That would be the end of the line for sure. Either way, she wouldn’t tell him what really happened. He would have to use his imagination for that one.
The only thing she couldn’t figure out was, why had he given her the day off as well? Did Eric think that by giving her the day off, she would secretly meet with Kane and they would come up with some elaborate lie? She hadn’t even spoken or run into Kane since the match last Monday. Perhaps he was making it a priority to avoid her after what she had told him after the match.
Draining her glass, she silently hoped she hadn’t crossed the line. The one thing she didn’t need was Kane angry with her, not for her sake but for the trio currently passed out in her room. The feud with him, Matt and Lita was proof of what he would do.
Since Lita had mouthed off to him, Kane has made it his personal business to seek revenge on Lita by attacking Matt once more. The potential fathers- to-be had been feuding for months now, at which point Matt still had not forgiven Lita. There was rumor just amongst the girls that Lita was going to find out who the father was, by some very expensive and very complicated manner. Lita would not confirm it of course, but Kat knew the rumor to be true and that Lita would go through with it.
She had the strangest feeling that tomorrow would be a big day on RAW, if not for the fact Eugene was going for the title again, but something else that would be bigger then that. It was now a question of whether she would go, though she was supposed to take that night off she also wanted to be with both Chris’ and Edge if her suspicion turned out to have some truth to it.
Now this was just getting depressing.
Instead she turned her attention to a recent issue that she and some of the other guys had been talking about.
In a few weeks, both the RAW and SmackDown! wrestlers would be dangerously close to each other. Since this didn’t happen often and it was a chance for old friends to get together, Kat had mentioned that maybe those who wanted to should get together and go Paintballing.
Most of them seemed shocked that Kat came up with such an idea, mostly because they thought it was good. All that was left to do was find out who wanted to go and spilt them all into teams. It was already decided that what ever team Kat was on, the whole of Evolution would be on the opposite team. This came directly from Ric Flair, him being the only member that really had a problem with her. Which surprised her since she had attacked both him and Hunter, which she found out really didn’t concern himself with her. Hunter could be a real ass sometimes, but even he had his good qualities.
It really didn’t bother her since she was automatically grouped together with Jericho, Benoit and Edge. Really it gave her something to look forward to. At least this way she would get to know some of the other veteran wrestlers, maybe pick up some advice and gain a friend or two.
The first of the trio to wake was Edge, giving a muffled “Good morning” as he stumbled around the room trying to find his duffle. Nearly tripping over Jericho in the process, he retrieved it and left to get a shower. After he got out and was thoroughly awake, it was Kats turn to wash up as Edge ordered breakfast for them all.
Finally clean and in a fresh change of clothes, Kat sat down with Edge and told him about the conversation with Bischoff.
“Lots of people are wondering about that incident Kat, mainly why you helped him. I can’t tell you how many times we disappointed people by telling them we don’t know, but even I’m starting to wonder.” Edge looked at her with concern, they had been discussing the reasons amongst themselves. So far they had yet to come up with some logical answer and he was hoping she would tell him something. Anything.
Kat looked at him and shrugged, “I don’t know, I just...I just don’t know. Maybe because I see part of myself in him...” Which was true. She did see part of herself in Kane, the part that didn’t want to trust anyone. Even when she was with Edge, Jericho and Benoit she wasn’t even sure if she truly trusted them. She wanted to, but trust has only come back to hurt her and she didn’t want to go through that pain again. It was the one thing she never told anyone, and in her mind never would.
Edge sighed, he had hoped she would tell him more. He knew this was all any of them would get from her, which is more then what they would get if they asked Kane. He was about to ask her about it when Jericho and Benoit started to wake, much to Kat’s relief.
Breakfast came and for the rest of the day they talked of the Paintballing plans, going out to meet up with some of the others to finalize them. Through it all, Kat still couldn’t shake the notion that tomorrow was going to be big.
Not that she was going to find out first hand. Jericho and Edge insisted that she go and have some fun, maybe pick up some movies that they could watch when they got back.
Instead of Jericho being the overly excited one, it was Edge. He was going up against Evolution, still honoring his vow to take them out one by one. Kat wished them luck and for the first time since coming to the RAW roster, had no clue what she was going to do.
True, Kane was here as well. Someplace. But she didn’t feel like hunting down the big man, mainly because she didn’t know what to say to him if she found him. It still unnerved her that she hadn’t seen any sign of him for a week. She was also somewhat grateful for the break. With so many people asking questions, she guessed he didn’t want to risk an encounter. Only more questions would be asked.
Finally remembering that the hotel was close to a beach, she shoved the key in her pocket and got out of there. RAW had been half way over when she left, and she refused to watch it on the television. She would wait and annoy Edge to find out what happened, figuring he’d probably be running his mouth anyway.
It wasn’t hard to get to the beach as she walked along the shore, her feet the only thing the waves could reach. She still wore her long pants, thankful they had buckles on them and could be lifted up enough so they wouldn’t get wet.
The moon shone clearly trough the night sky, bathing what it touched in a pale light. The stars were bright and numerous, standing out easily from the blackness that surrounded them. She spotted the pier and wasted no time in heading to it, knowing the view would be that much better and she could see the ships sailing at night.
Walking to the end and leaning against the railing, she cast a long gaze about the ocean and found the lights of ships in the distance. The waves crashed against the pillars that held the structure and for once, her mind was at ease. She had forgotten how much she loved the beach at night, even better when there wasn’t a soul to be found.
That was not the case however, as a deep yet almost whispered voice addressed her.
“Tell me.” He had done it so often the shock had since been taken away, not that he would have noticed since he wasn’t looking at her.
Kat pushed herself away from the pier as she searched for his voice, finding him on a bench almost completely hidden by the shadows. The question puzzled her as she walked closer to him, he had been so quiet she had barely heard him at all.
“Tell you what?” Her eyes adjusted and she could see he was leaning forward with his elbows resting on his knees, looking down with an expression Kat had never seen before. He still didn’t look at her when she spoke to him.
“Tell me...why have you been helping me?” The question wasn’t said out of anger, which at first puzzled Kat even more. She stood next to the bench, leaning against the piers railing as she thought of an explanation that would satisfy both Kane and herself.
Watching him closely as she answered, “I see myself when I watch you...I doubt you’ll believe me, but I find it hard to trust people as well. I also don’t think you’re the monster people make you out to be.” He didn’t move as she finished giving her answer, not even his expression changed.
It was a while until he finally spoke again, just as quietly as the first time.
“It’s not mine...” when he spoke this time, she could see he was in pain. It took her a second to figure out what he was talking about as he continued, “The child is Matt’s...not mine.” This had been what Kat was afraid of. She didn’t need to know anything else.
Kane was so heart broken that he didn’t lash out at her or even gaze upon her with rage, instead feeling the sting of another betrayal.
Lita was supposed to have his baby.
His legacy.
The one thing he wanted, that he was sure he could have, had been taken from him. Like everything else. He did everything he could to ensure the child was his, yet even that wasn’t enough. Kane had been betrayed again.
He hardly noticed Kat sitting beside him and putting her hand on his shoulder, all he could think about was Lita and her betrayal. What upset him the most was, she announced it live on RAW, in the process completely bashing Kane and saying he would never have a family. He would never be loved.
It hurt. It hurt him so bad he destroyed the television in his room, not wanting to watch another second of it or listen to the venomous voice of the one who betrayed him. His room was now a complete wreck, he had to get out of there and away from people. They had betrayed him enough, he didn’t want their company now.
Yet he didn’t have the energy to tell Kat off, everything hurt so much he was almost blinded by the pain. Fresh tears started to form in his eyes and gently fall down his face, letting them fall to the pier. He didn’t bother to wipe them away.
Kat didn’t know what to do; she didn’t know what she could do. She didn’t know what was worse. Seeing him in this much pain, or knowing she couldn’t do anything to ease it. Knowing it probably wouldn’t help, she did the only thing that entered her mind. Hugged him.
At first Kane didn’t know how to react. He couldn’t even remember the last time he had been hugged. By anyone. Yet she had done so willingly. He hesitated before returning the hug, resting his head on her shoulder as he sobbed quietly. His tears dampened her shirt, not caring that she saw him like this.
He vowed that Lita would pay for this. He would not let Matt Hardy take the baby that should have been his. He clutched her shirt in his fists as he came to this decision.
No one would stop his revenge.
Kane composed himself and let Kat go, the fire that burned inside him stronger then ever. Looking at her, he remembered the answer she gave him and had to agree. They were alike. More then he’d care to admit. He still didn’t know if he could trust her, or if he even wanted to.
That was something he would have to think about. Heavily.
She only gave him a small smile, seeing the new resolve he had. He truly was something else. It was then she knew why she was so draw to him. It wasn’t his need for revenge or his power, which was indeed admirable. Kane was one of those people that wanted to best the world. So much had been taken from him, keeping him from having what he desired and throwing it back in his face every time. Yet nothing could drown his pure determination to prove the world wrong, he knows he can get what he wants and wont be denied his ultimate goal. Not by anyone or anything.
He laid a hand on her shoulder as he stood up, giving a small squeeze of thanks as he walked back to the hotel. Kat watched him walk away and knew he would be fine. If not for kind of person he is, it would be the fact she had his back.
It made her wonder if she loved him, but that didn’t last long.
She didn’t need to fool herself, and didn’t care what others thought. They were probably right.
It would be her silent confession.
