“What time is the gig today Ray?” Mikey asked a while later, as he and Bob played the latest Grand Theft Auto game.
“One I think.”
“Good. I like getting done early,” Frank said, finishing a bottle of water and tossing it into the trash. I was sitting in the corner reading a book I had brought with me for the plane ride. Gerard was on the phone with his mom in the bedroom, and I could hear him laughing about something she had said. I loved his laughter. It was so bright. It made me feel good inside. I tried to concentrate on my book, but after hearing Gerard laughing, it was no use. I put it down and went outside for a cigarette. It was warm and sunny, and the heat from the sun felt good on my bare shoulders. I sat on the steps of the bus and watched people playing a game of kickball in an open part of the field. Out of the corner of my eye I saw movement as someone approached me. It was Adam again. I stood up when he came nearer because my senses suddenly went on high alert.
“Wait Jordyn. Before you say anything, please just let me talk.” He held up his hands like everything was cool. I shot him a sickened stare.
“You’ve got five minutes before I call someone.” I gave him fair warning. I tossed down my cigarette and folded my arms across my chest.
“Baby, I don’t want this to end. I made a really stupid mistake. I was sleeping and she just came in there and started messing with me. I thought it was you baby. I didn’t know.” He tried to touch my cheek. I backed away angrily.
“You thought it was ME? You mistook that crack whore for ME? You are such a fucking LIAR Adam! How dare you say that to me! Do you think I’m a fucking idiot? Jesus Christ!” I was livid as hell. I could feel my cheeks blazing and knew that he had better get away from me before I attacked. I dug my nails hard into my arm but didn’t feel any pain. Adam tried to step closer to me again.
“Get the FUCK away from me Adam!” I didn’t hold my voice back. He acted like he wanted me to be quiet, like he didn’t want anyone to hear.
“Shh, please Jordyn. Just wait…just…” I had had all I could stand of this. I screamed bloody murder at the top of my lungs, piercing the quiet day with bloodcurdling terror. Adam’s eyes flew open wide as the people in the kickball game stopped and looked our way. Someone walking by the back of the bus stopped and held their hand up to their face to shield the sun so they could see us.
“LEAVE ME ALONE!” I wailed, and before I knew what I was doing, I shoved him. Hard. He flew backwards, lost his balance and fell, rolling back with his legs whipping over his head. He did a flip and landed on his knees, a dust cloud forming around him. Someone laughed from a distance, and then the door to the bus opened. Gerard stepped out and looked at me. I had a violently angry look about me, and my stance, unbeknownst to me, was that of a street fighter. Gerard looked to the right and saw Adam on the ground.
“What’d you do?” He asked in surprise, a bit of a smile overcoming his lips. Adam looked up at Gerard and then down at his bleeding palms.
“Well, we know that’s not stigmata,” Gerard said, mocking Adam and taking a cigarette out of his pocket. I relaxed more since Gerard had come outside, and I stood upright and ran a hand through my hair. Adam got up and brushed his pants off. He saw the smirk on Gerard’s face and before we knew it, he was running towards Gerard. Gerard sidestepped him and he tripped and fell against the steps of the bus. I moved out of the way as he rolled over on his back.
“I think you better just give up Adam and go home with your tail between your legs. It’s over between us and no matter what you do, you won’t win me back. Do you really expect me to forgive you for what you did?” Adam squinted up at me, his teeth showing in a grimace of pain. Gerard was now leaning against the bus on his left shoulder, his cigarette hanging from the corner of his mouth. Adam got to his feet, breathing heavy and holding his stomach.
“Why are you on her side Gerard? You don’t even know her! We’ve been friends for years!”
“Right. But I didn’t realize what a dog you were, man. How could you do that to such a great girl? I just don’t get it.” Gerard gestured towards me and Adam turned to look at me. His face softened momentarily when his eyes met mine. For a fleeting moment, I could have sworn I felt a little pity for him. But then I realized how busted my give a damn really was. I shook my head at Adam and cut my eyes away from his stare. He turned back to Gerard and took a deep breath. He was stepping closer and raising his voice.
“So what? Are you trying to get into her pants now? Because that’s really all she’s worth.” Adam was in front of Gerard now, yelling in his face. But when he heard Adam say that, his fist came out of nowhere and cracked into the side of Adam’s face. Adam fell down and Gerard knelt down over him.
“Say something else motherfucker! I’ll fucking kill you Adam!” I clamped my hands over my mouth in horror. They began to scuffle on the ground. I didn’t know what to do. No one had ever fought over me like that before. I was scared. I opened up the door to the bus and screamed.
“Frank! Come here! Mikey! Help!” The guys all raced outside, alarmed. Gerard was on top of Adam punching him in the face. Adam was trying to block him with his arms and kicking his legs in the air. Frank ran over and pulled Gerard up.
“Dude! What the fuck is going on? Are you crazy? You wanna get kicked off the tour?”
“I don’t fuckin’ care Frank. He had it coming.” Gerard kicked his foot at Adam, who was still lying on the ground. His face was bloody and lacerated. Frank pulled Gerard away from Adam and made him go inside the bus. Tears began to well up in my eyes. Mikey was standing next to me, and he put his arm around me.
“Come on. Let’s just go inside. Forget about him.” I put my arm around his waist and we walked back into the bus together. Bob was the only one left standing there, watching Adam writhe in pain on the ground.
“Fuck off Adam. Bite the bullet and move on. You fucked up, not her. Don’t take your shit out on the innocent.” He turned around and went back into the bus, leaving Adam out there alone.
