“So you’ve been to Europe before?” Eric sipped on his soda. They were sitting at a table in the Canal Shops.
“Yeah. Right after 8th grade, if you had taken a full year of Spanish, you spent sixteen days touring Spain, France and Italy. We saw everything. Pompeii, the Louvre, the Vatican; the Spanish coast was amazing.” She licked a drip from the side of her cone and nearly jumped out of her skin when her phone rang. “It’s George. Hey Darlin’, what’s up? Not that I know of…Definitely! Yeah, I’ll call you back for directions when I have a pen.”
“Going out tonight?” Eric’s heart dropped a little. He was hoping she would hang out with him for a while. Now that she wasn’t calling him a fuckhead, he remembered why he’d encouraged George to talk to the producers about her.
“Yeah, George invited me to the Tao tonight.”
“Oh great. You guys will have fun there. The food is amazing.” Eric nodded towards a store next to where they were sitting and they got up.
“What, you’re not coming?” She stopped looking at the keychain she’d picked up.
“I wouldn’t want to crash your date.” Eric moved around the T-Shirt rack so Ireland couldn’t see him frown.
“Date?” Ireland laughed out loud. “No way. I mean, George is a great friend and all, but me and Mr. Texas? Dating? Too weird.”
“Weird?” Eric’s interest piqued.
“Uh, can I plead the 5th?” Ireland blushed a little.
“Nope. When you say it’s to ‘weird’ to date somebody from Texas, that deserves and explanation,” Eric smiled and walked back around the T-Shirt rack.
“Oh boy. Ok, southern guys are chivalrous, and that’s great and all but, um, they take the over polite into the bedroom too. And if they’re aggressive, it’s just weirder. So no, I don’t date southern guys.” Ireland blushed and turned around to ‘look’ at some souvenir mugs.
“Ok. I can go with that.” He waited a minute for her to turn around. “So what kind of guys do you date?”
“Losers mostly,” she laughed. “I dunno. Normal guys.”
Eric draped his arm around her shoulders again. “Well, what’s normal?”
She shrugged. “Never really thought about it I guess. Probably someone who’s from the same area as me. Very middle America. Smart definitely,” Ireland looked at her watch. “I should probably get up to my room and change. Why don’t you come with us tonight? It would be a lot of fun.” Ireland started walking through the casino to the hotel lobby.
“Sure. I don’t have anything planned for tonight. What time are you meeting there?” Eric got out his phone to look at the time.
“In about an hour, but you don’t need to change or anything, you look great. I just want to get out of jeans.” Ireland turned to find one of the elevators.
“Ok, I think I’m going to take a cruise through the casino while you get ready.” Eric grabbed his wallet so he could cash in some change.
“Oh. I figured you were going to come up and bum the TV or something. It’s only going to take me 5 minutes to change so…” Ireland hit the up button on the elevator and waited for it to open.
“Hey, hanging out with you is better than getting mobbed in a casino,” Eric paused. “That sounded much better in my head.” The elevator dinged and opened.
Ireland giggled. “I know what you meant. Tao is on the same floor as my room I think. This way it saves us an elevator trip.”
Ireland opened up the door to her hotel room. “I still can’t believe the room the studio got me. It’s huge for just one person.” Erin opened her closet and pulled out a long white linen skirt and a tank top. “Gimme two minutes. And take anything you want out of the mini-bar.” She closed the bathroom door behind her and sat down at the vanity.
Eric found the remote and flipped on the news. Nothing interesting. A ten second brief on the scene they shot in front of the Venetian and the new girl on set. A story only Vegas local news could get away with. Some convenience store in the bad part of town got robbed…and then the bathroom door clicked.
“Told you I dressed quick.” Ireland went to the desk on the other side of the room and grabbed some cash and her ID.
Eric was amazed. She had tied her hair up, put on fresh make-up and changed her clothes. Something that would have taken most girls 40 minutes only took her 10, and she looked just beautiful. He sat, dumbfounded, in the scent of her perfume. She smelled amazing. “Wow,” was all he could muster.
“Oh it’s not that great. C’mon, we’ll stick a couple dollars in the machines before we head up to Tao.” She reached for his hand and a jolt of static electricity shocked them both. “Damn bed. It does that all the time. You should see my hair when I get up in the morning.”
“I’d love to,” Eric replied, still intoxicated by her scent. Then he realized what he’d said. “I mean, I can imagine. I was only sitting down for about 10 minutes.” He knew she’d heard what he said, but she pretended not to notice.
“I’ll send you a picture one of these days.” She grabbed her room key and opened the safe so she could lock up her pocketbook.
“Here,” Eric reached in his pocket. “Stick these in there too. I don’t want to lose them.” He tossed his keys to her and she locked them in the safe with the rest of her stuff. He stood up and stretched.
“Ready?” She looped her arm around his elbow.
