"What the hell is going on?" Frank shouted at Gerard as the rest of the band practically flew through the swinging doors of the hospital. Gerard sat with his head in his hands in the waiting room. He looked up at the guys, his eyes swimming with tears.
"She....she.....found cocaine from somewhere, and....overdosed. I don't know if it was deliberate. I.........," he dissolved into tears again. "If I hadn't found her.... she might have fucking died. It’s all my fault, I shouldn't have left her alone. Last night I had a feeling that she wanted to get some drugs. She begged me. I should have stayed with her!"
"Oh man," Mikey sighed. He kneeled down beside his brother and put his arms around him. The rest of the guys stood in shock, running their hands through their hair, Frank messing with his lip piercing. There was silence, all that could be heard was Gerard's quiet sobbing.
"It’s not your fault Gee," Bob reasoned. "You've done everything you can. Maybe its time for her to get some professional help."
"I can't. I have to help her. I love her," Gerard choked out.
Suddenly there was a commotion and two doctors rushed through the doors. "What have we got," one asked the nurse who was waiting at the other end of the room.
"Drugs overdose. She's gone into cardiac arrest. Can't get an output," she said quietly but not quietly enough.
"WHAT? HELP HER, DO SOMETHING,” Gerard screamed.
The doctors disappeared and Gerard followed.
"Gee stop," Mikey pleaded. He hated his brother like this, they all did.
Gerard reached the room where Bea lay. She didn't look like her. Wires, tubes everywhere. She wasn't his Bea. "Oh God, no." He could hear the flatline of the heart monitor. He jolted as they applied the shock to her frail body.
"Gerard come away, come away," Bob put his arm around Gerard and forced him away.
10 minutes later and the nurse entered the waiting room. "Is she ok? Please tell me," Gerard asked hoarsely.
"We got her back. She's weak but stable," she smiled. "She's not awake but you can see her."
They all trooped after her and cautiously entered the small room. Gerard sat by the bed and took Bea's hand in his own. Frank, kissed her gently on the forehead. Mikey stood in the corner in shock. Bob and Ray ruffled her hair like they always did. "We can't stop helping her. We didn't give up on you Gee and we're not going to give up on her!" Ray said calmly, although inside his stomach was churning.
"Yeah. You hear that Bea? We're here for you," Frank whispered.
Bea's eyes flickered as if in silent thanks.
Blurry figures filled your vision. Hushed voices, whispers, were they talking about you. Why couldn't you move? You can't breathe, something was choking you. Help you wished silently. You made a guttering sound with your throat as you fought against what was choking you.
"Nurse!" you heard someone shout. Nurse? You were in hospital? Someone pulled you free from the darkness and cool air flooded your lungs. The shapes started to clear. What was going on? A figure with black hair swam in front of you.
"Bea?" it said. Who was it, you couldn't make it out. "It's me Gerard," he said.
"Gerard," you whispered. You tried to reach out to him but you were plunged into a well of dark shadows.
Watching over her these last couple of days had been hell. They had shows to perform, rehearsals to attend, interviewers questions to answer and a tour to organise. But still every day they had been to sit by her bedside and pray that she would be there to share that experience. Gerard had confided in me that he was falling for Bea and in a way we all had fallen for her, although obviously not in the same way. She was like our little sister now, she was the same as us and she needed us to get through her dark days.
"Ray. Do you think we're doing the right thing? Do you think I'm doing the right thing?" Gerard had asked me the day after we almost lost Bea.
"What do you mean? I think that we have a chance to save her life. Without us and without you she will never do this. Of course this is right," I held Gerard by the shoulders and looked him straight in the eye. "If you love her then you have to ride this out." He never asked again.
"GERARD," you shouted and shot up in your bed. Your breathing came hard and fast. There was no-one there. You remembered. He hadn't been there when it happened. The shock, the shakes, the cold. Walking 2 miles to a warehouse where you bought the cocaine. Taking it back, taking too much, taking away what you had achieved. You cried silently. He won't want you now. He won't believe in you anymore. You tears blurred your vision, they came in floods, it got louder and you didn't see him come in, didn't see him watching you.
"Hey," he said. Your head jerked up. He was paler that normal, hands in pockets, avoiding eye contact. "You're awake." He didn't know why that now she was awake everything seemed different.
"Mmmhmmm," you mumbled. He had changed. "I'm sorry," you blurted out, "I'm so sorry." You reached out for him but he stayed as if his feet were stuck to the floor.
"Why?" He asked. "Didn't I help enough?"
You didn't know what to say. You filtered into silence. You had become frozen in this awkward moment. Eventually, you got awkwardly out of bed and walked towards him. Tears fell silently as snow from both your eyes. You held his face in your hands and stood on tiptoes to reach his lips. Before they touched, he pulled away.
"No," he said huskily. "I can't do this. I can't trust you. You've ruined what we were, what we could have been."
"Help me. I love you. I can't do this alone. I need you. I need the guys," you cried.
"We can't help you. I can't help you. I'm sorry."
and he left without another word.
"What's up Gee," asked Mikey, as Gerard stumbled back into the rehearsal room. He remained silent as the guys watched him collapse into a chair, breathing heavily, his hands shaking, running though his hair.
"I told her we couldn't help her. I left her there," he choked.
"What?" Ray asked bewildered. "I thought we were standing by her! What happened?"
"I'm not strong enough for this. You know today I actually contemplated having a drink!" His voice rose in anger. "I've been fucking sober for months and I'm gonna let some chick come along and ruin that!"
"Gerard calm down," Bob said quietly.
"She wasn't just 'some chick' Gee. You know that and we know that!" Frank retorted.
"Quit it," Gerard replied. But all he could see was Bea's tear stained, heartbroken face as he had left her alone.
What were you going to do? Your heart ached for him, you could still feel his arms around you, and your lips itched with longing to reach his. You walked to the nurse's station. "I want to leave, I want to discharge myself," you insisted.
"I wouldn't advise that Miss," the nurse reasoned.
"Look, I will be dead within a month if I don't get out of this place and find the one person who can help me!" Your rant seemed to do the trick and within half an hour you were sitting in a cab trying to figure out what to do.
Frank was still attempting to reason with Gerard as he slashed paint onto a small canvas. "Gee, listen to me, listen," he said more and more forcefully. Gerard splashed red and black onto the surface, becoming increasingly more violent with the shapes he was making. "Have you ever made a mistake?" Frank fought against Gerard's stony silence. "Have you ever wished you could go back and change an event?" Frank's voice rose in volume with each passing second. "Have you ever been so wrapped up in your own despair and pain that you forget what you're doing to those around you?" He grabbed hold of Gerard's hands in frustration, sending the paint brush flying across the table, an angry red streak was left behind. "Have you ever loved someone so much, and been afraid of it? Have you ever tried to hurt that person as an escape route? Have you ever been that scared?" The two of then looked at each other for a long time. Gerard shook his arms out of Frank's grip and nodded in silence.
"I'm an idiot," Gerard said quietly. They had phoned the hospital and been told that Bea had discharged herself, they had searched the streets trying to find her with no luck. They had failed her, they'd lost her.
"We've tried everything," Mikey sighed. They fell into an uncomfortable silence. That never happened. After a while they heard music.
"Who is that?" Bob asked, a confused look across his face.
A guitar was being gently strummed and a woman with a haunting voice was singing softly. Bob moved to the window of the room and looked out. He turned around with a smile on his face. "Come here," he said.
Outside, on the carpark stood Bea, an acoustic guitar slung around her, her voice lilting through the air. The song she sang was one of pain, her lyrics soared.
"Don't turn away, don't turn your back, please believe me and forgive me for all the mistakes I made. Baby, don't forget that I need you, I need you until the stars fall from the sky."
Gerard moved away from the window. His stomach churned, butterflies fluttered. His heart ached for her. Her lyrics hit him like a slap in the face. "We are the same you and I. We're the same. Don't leave me without having ever loved me completely." He walked out of the rehearsal room and onto the gravel path of the carpark. She saw him and her voice filled the air. He watched her face fill with light and the music fill her soul. He strode purposely towards her and she stopped playing.
"Don't stop," he asked. "Don't ever stop."
She took off her guitar and ran into his arms. He held her close and breathed in her scent. Heaven. He ran his fingers along her face and she pushed a lock of hair out of his face. He looked deep into her eyes and without a word kissed her lips with such passion she thought her heart would explode with joy.
