The van slowly speed down the main road on the way back to the club, which wasn’t saying much as the vans max speed was around 60 mph. Even at 60 mph the van was struggling to keep up the fast pace, a loud clunking noise could be heard and all of them knew they needed a new van, or some money very soon for repairs. Gerard was quickly changed in the front seat, he was desperately trying to get himself to look presentable. He had completely forgot that he would be selling drinks and had to care about how he looked.
They arrived at the club just as Gerard had finished fixing his hair the best that he could considering the entire band had not showered in a couple days. Even before the van had come to a complete stop Gerard had jumped out and was racing in the front door. Ray parked the car and the rest of the band was slow to follow, none of them looking forward to having to really work for there money that day.
As they entered the club they noticed a considerable difference from earlier in the day. The lights were mostly off, and were replaced with fancy flashing lights, fog was covering most of the club giving it an eerie out of world feeling. The bar however was the most interesting part of the club. It was a typical design, a circle that allowed the bartenders to serve anyone around it. The drinks however were on rotators that spun slowly and had a light beneath them that made them glow. The seats looked like very comfortable red velvet bar stools. The counter was all glass that was filled with bottle caps of all sorts, eliminated by a light behind it. Gerard was caught up in staring at the nice bar, one of the nicest and edgier ones he has seen. All of a sudden a hand landed on his shoulder causing him to jump.
“Wahh” Gerard quickly turned around to be greeted by a smiling young woman. She was cleaning a glass, and wearing the typical black bartending outfit. She was very gorgeous, she had Gerard quickly new she worked the bar as well. “Oh, hey sorry, Gerard… I’m a bit out of it today, long drive….I uh, I take it you’re the other bartender? Eh good thing cause I’d so not know what the hell to do all alone.” Gerard was ringing his hands together still looking around the place.
“Sorry for scaring you, my names Jenna, Mr. Winston says I’ll be working with ya tonight.” Jenna went back to cleaning the glass in her hand after shaking Gerard’s hand.
“Yeah, uh we drove here from New Jersey, thinking we were performing, there was an accidental double booking and we can’t perform, were outta cash…” Gerard voice trailed off there as he saw Frank and Mikey where black leather pants with open black shirts as well. Jenna turned around to see what he was staring at and laughed.
“Ha yeah I get it, I was in a band for a while, we toured here and there I know how it goes.. oh your friends well they are bitches for the night.” They had walked over to the bar while they were talking, Jenna had grabbed a new glass and began cleaning it.
“uhmm oh ok… I uhh…” Gerard was scratching his head as he saw Ray and Matt as well all wearing the same outfits.
“We usually don’t have servers, cause where always understaffed, nice touch though the customers really like it, makes ordering drinks on everyone a lot easier.” Jenna had walked to the inside part of the bar Gerard following behind her.
“Ok I understand having the servers but what the hell is up with the outfits?” Gerard was still completely puzzled at why they were wearing what they were wearing.
“You know this area is like 99% gay right. Lots of the guys come for the guys, nights we have servers, news travels quickly and more and more will show up.”
“ah, I see, guess sex sells what ever it comes in.”
“Exactly, ok now you ever do bartending work, Gerard.”
“Not exactly, For friends and such but never as a job.” Gerard decided he should help and picked up a glass and began polishing it as well.
“Ok well very simple, make what they order, if ya don’t know what it is ask me, or if were flooded, ask the customer, just tell them you haven’t heard of it, they normally understand, plus a cutie like you, they’ll want to talk to ya.” Jenna had moved on to stocking the refrigerator, pulling drinks from a hidden cabinet, and loading them into the various open refrigerators located at the counters of the bar.
“Ok I got it, anything else, are people allowed to keep a tab?” Gerard was looking around the bar, memorizing where everything was.
“Not unless they ask to keep it open, if they do hand them a bracelet, it has a number on it. When a person comes up to add to their tab, you just go to the cash register type the number then select the drink its alphabetical and if its not there type the name in and we will price it when there’s a lull. Any questions?”
“Uh, when do we stop serving a customer, like cut them off?” Gerard began helping Jenna handing her the drinks as she loaded them.
“Good question, we only cut them off if their health is at risk, I’m sure you know about alcohol poisoning, and its signs. Most people here know there limits, were not expecting any trouble tonight, anything else?”
“Nope can’t think of anything.”
“Good cause were about to open and it’s a little crazy at first.” Jenna walked to the back of the bar, exited and disappeared behind a door that said ‘VIP’. Frank walked over to join Gerard trying to show off his sexy outfit.
“What the fuck are you wearing Frank!!” Gerard was examining the skippy outfit.
“Ha yeah apparently this whole area is like gay, man I wish we where performing tonight, I’d so jump your bones!” Frank burst into a fit of laughter as he saw Gerard’s face drop. Of all the things that they have done together sex was not one of them. Just the occasional blow or hand job. “Yeah well we are supposed to be servers, deliver drinks, take drink orders, bla bla bla basically bitch work.”
“Ha suits you very well” Gerard managed to jump behind the bar and drop the counter that would separate them. “Eh, bartenders only Frank, you wouldn’t want to get me fired on my first day would you!”
Frank was about to protest when the doors to the club were suddenly opened, and a stream of people began to walk in.
“Shit, time to work” Frank walked off joining Mikey, Ray, and Matt over in the corner waiting to be of use.
The night was a big blur, filled with continual drink orders of even a coinsure of alcohol like Gerard didn’t know. Frank and Mikey endured many groping from the gay men in attendance, Ray and Matt fortunately scared them into not trying anything.
Once the night was said and done the band had received far more money than they thought they would have gotten around two hundred and fifty dollars. Rather shocked and surprised at their large pay check for the night Gerard went to talk to the owner of the club about the situation.
Gerard knocked quietly on the door, wanting to be as polite as possible he waited for a ‘come in’ from the man in side. When he heard the remark he slowly opened the door to find Mr. Winston sitting behind a grand red oak desk adorned with gold plated metal leafing running along the edges. A solid black marble floor that seemed to sparkle in the light, the walls were a blood red with tasteful art work hanging from the walls. Gerard was taken aback at the level of class that was in the room, normally club offices were cheesy and tacky, with degrading pictures of women, as well as being poorly decorated.
“Oh, yes, Gerard, how can I help you?” The man politly put down what he was working on stood up and shook Gerard’s hand giving him complete attention, which Gerard was not accustomed to.
“Yes, well I wanted to thank you for the work that you gave us for tonight, it was above and beyond what we asked, but the second thing was, we received a check and it was far more than we thought it would be, I thought there was some sort of mistake.” Gerard’s voice trailed off waiting for the man’s response.
“Oh yes I asked them to pay all of you the regular salaries. It was our fault for not communicating to you about the double booking, and it is unfair for you to receive the short end of the stick so to speak.”
“Oh well, thank you very much for that. It will definitely help us. All of us gave up our jobs, all we are doing is touring, we don’t have any income other than sales from the concerts.”
“Yes I know how that goes, I was never in a band and I was never touring but when you open a club, you have to put all your time and all your money into it, if the club doesn’t take off, then your up a river without a paddle, if you get my drift.”
“Yes well thank you,..”
“You know if you ever need any work, you know for extra money, give me a call, I like ya’ll… here’s my number if your ever near here again, drop by, we have an opening in two weeks, the band that was playing apparently broke up.” The man stood from behind his dark wooden desk and made his way over to Gerard, with a fancy business card in his hand. Extending the card out as he shook Gerard’s hand at the same time. Gerard smiled at the man as he took the card, looking down at it to see there were multiple numbers as well as multiple fax lines, getting a hold of this man would not be a problem. During the whole exchange both men where to busy to see that Jenna had slipped into the office.
When she was noticed the owner excused himself from Gerard, showing him the exit and promising the opening in two weeks was there’s if they could make it. With Gerard promising to look at there schedule to see if they indeed could make it back.
Gerard made his way out of the club looking back over the card, it was a fancy card with gold engravings and raised letters, the paper had a simple design on it, one that was almost not recognizable if you didn’t look at it carefully. Making his way to the entrance of the club, he said goodbye to the bouncers talking at the front door, shaking their hands as he left.
Outside the band was standing around the van, Frank had managed to talk someone into letting him keep the shirt he had worn, and he was cat walking the length of the van, striking a pose at each end, Mikey and Frank were laughing and joining in every once in awhile, while Matt looked on in practical disgust.
“Hey guys, great news, they need a band in two weeks, I think we should try and come back, they were nice enough to us, what do ya’ll say?!” Gerard had come over to stand with the rest of them, stopping directly in Franks path causing Frank to run directly into him, for he was not looking walking with his head in the air, and swaying his hips so dramatically he was not walking straight.
Frank fell to the ground and laughter erupted from Mikey, Ray and Gerard as he just lay down putting his arms behind his head. Listening to Gerard explain what the man had said again.
“Yeah, he said the band in two weeks, broke up or something, they need someone to cover, I think we should try and make it, you know return the favor in a sense, I mean they were nice enough to give us work for the night, what do y’all say.” (A/N: yes I know I’ve used the word y’all a lot I just noticed that I live in Texas, I say it all the time.)
“Yeah I agree, I’ll even wear this sexy shirt!” Frank jumped off the ground and struck a pose, “aren’t I sexy” Frank kept the pose waiting for a response from someone.
“Yes Frank you are extremely sexy, is your ego fixed now?” Ray had stood from leaning against the van to take the card that Gerard was holding out. “Yeah I think we should, it was a good crowd, our type you know, I think we could get some fans.”
“Sweet, we should give him a call tomorrow. We should hit the road though, if we wanna make it to the next venue, I can’t wait to get back on stage!” The band hopped in the van, Ray behind the wheel, Mikey in shot gun. (A/N: if you don’t know why the seat in the front is called shot gun, its because in the olden days when people used carriages and such, the person sitting in with the driver, carried a shotgun to shoot anyone who tried to rob or attack them.) Gerard, Frank, and Matt took there seats accordingly. Ray turned on the van, and they pulled out of the club, heading towards the freeway, and on to the next venue, hopefully another problem like what had transpired this time would happen again.
Back in the owners office Jenna was giving Mr. Winston an order sheet of all the drinks that they had served that night, informing him of the alcohol they needed to order for the next night.
“What where you saying about the band canceling in two weeks, they called yesterday to confirm that they were coming.” Jenna continued filling out the forms required to get the alcohol they needed.
“They are not coming, I liked that guy who was here, in that band, I liked them.” The man was staring at Jenna, her head was down so she did not see that he was glaring at her almost daring her to further question him.
“Wow, ok, I wonder what happened, they were so excited about this, here you go, we’re doing well on drink sale and such, everyone is wanting the mixed drinks the higher priced items, that’s good and I think it is because of the holidays.”
“That’s great Jenna, anything else.” Mr. Winston had ordered all the alcohol and filed the papers for later billings. He crossed his arms and was leaning back in his chair staring at the young bartender before him.
“Actually yes, the man, Gerard I think it was, I think he has a real future, if not in his band, then in bartending, his tip bowl was overflowing in an hour, if there coming back like you said, I’d like to give him some information on a bartending school. I think he could work in a very high end bar.”
"Well he will be back soon, Jenna, Is that all, because if it is please get out." Mr Winston leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms infront of him.
"Yes, am I good to leave?" Jenna stood up and waited for the ok to leave for the night.
"Yes, bye Jenna." Mr. Winston waited till Jenna had stood up and left the room, the door closing behind her, before he picked up his cell phone and dialed.
"You know, I think I have some new recruits for us."
