Julia woke up in Howard’s hotel room, but in an empty bed. Her mouth was dry and her head felt like a giant sledge hammer had hit it on the side. She hoisted herself up in the bed. Flashes from the night before came back to her and she blushed heavily crimson thinking of all the things she’d done with Howard. But she also felt good, it had indeed felt good to notice that somebody else got aroused by her. And the sex had just been pretty amazing. She knew this wasn’t going to be some wonderful relationship, this might have been even a true one night stand, but she had enjoyed it and did not regret it. She got up and took a long, hot shower. After getting dressed, Howard still hadn’t returned to the bedroom and in about an hour they were meant to leave for the airport. Julia decided to go to her own room, she felt a little odd doing that but her things needed to be packed. He hadn’t even left her a note and she felt a strange knot in her stomach.
“If you don’t tell her, I will.” Mark said angrily at Howard when he had seen him creeping down the corridor towards James’ room where he took a quick shower and asked James to collect his stuff after Julia had left the room. James shook his head, he knew this routine, but obliged.
“Why should I tell her, she’ll only feel used.”
“Just, be honest How, she’ll find out sooner or later and hate you for it.”
“Great, this’ll make the atmosphere really grand.” Howard said.
“Mate,” Mark replied, “that is totally your own fault.”
Julia was just chucking the last bits and pieces into her suitcase when Howard entered the room.
“Hey,” she said and wanted to wrap her arms around him and give him a little cuddle, but she could tell by the look on his face that such a thing wasn’t going to be appreciated.
“I erm,” he began, “ I have to tell you something.” And he paced up and down her room while Julia sat on the end of her bed.
Julia opened her mouth before he did.
“You regret last night, don’t you?” she asked softly.
“No…well…yes”
“Oh God,” she said and put her hands to her face. “Why?”
“Because, I erm…” he hesitated again.
“Just tell me Howard.”
“Because I have a girlfriend at home,”
Julia looked at him but said nothing. Howard had cheated on his girlfriend, with her. She had slept with another woman’s man.
“And she is pregnant.” He added defeated.
Julia felt anger, she felt used, he’d lied to her and he was going to lie to his girlfriend because of her.
“Please, leave Howard.”
“But, let me explain..”
“There is nothing to explain. Things are perfectly clear. Just go.”

Six horrible hours later Julia arrived home. She was shattered and she immediately broke down in tears when Charlotte opened the door for her.
“I quit my job and I hate him!” She cried when a surprised Charlotte took her best friend into her arms and made shushing noises while she had no idea what had happened.
6. (3 Months later)
Julia sat on the couch watching TV, well, she wasn’t really watching. She just looked at the screen while munching crisps. The hard working, driven career woman she had been three months ago, had changed into an unemployed pile of sadness. She hadn’t gone out looking for a job after quitting with Nigel and she felt very strongly that the world was a shitty place to be and that everybody was a bastard. Except for Charlotte, she had been ever so nice. She worked every day and looked after Julia as if she was her sister.
Julia hadn’t seen or heard anything from the lads anymore, yes Howard had tried to call her about a zillion times, but she didn’t answer his calls. She hadn’t even been back at the office, she’d faxed Nigel her resignation and that was that. Howard must have gotten her number of Nigel, or his new PA, whatever.
Charlotte arrived from her work and brought a little card with for Julia.
“This came with the post, it’s for you.”
Julia opened it and read it, she smiled weakly and tossed the little card on the table.
Charlotte took the card and read: “Please give me a call, I’m a little worried! Big hug, Dawn.” Below her name, Dawn had scribbled her phone number.
“You should give her a call, she seems nice.”
Julia said something inaudible.
Charlotte sat on the chair opposite Julia and lit a cigarette. She squeezed her eyes and said: “You gained weight, d’you know that?” She said it more to get a reaction from Julia than really meaning it, but when she’d said it, she noticed that Julia indeed had gained some weight.
“Fuck off,” Julia said in a bored tone.
“Right,” Charlotte inhaled, “I’ll make us some tea.”
“Sorry Charlie, I just feel like….shit, I’m taking it out on you, sorry.”
“It’s alright, but really Jules, you need to get out, do something because you’re only getting more depressed by sitting here all day doing nothing.”
“I know,” Julia sighed, “I need to go job hunting but I just don’t have the energy to do so.”
“D’you know what, I’ll book us a spa for tomorrow, it’s Saturday anyway so it’s my day off, it’ll do us good. Some nice relaxing sauna’s and massages…”
Julia nodded and was thankful she had a friend like Charlotte.
The next morning they got up nice and early and were getting ready to go the health centre Charlotte had picked out.
Julia had felt a little light headed when she got up but thought nothing of it. They were drinking a cup of tea when all of a sudden Julia felt a wave of nausea through her body. She practically had to run to make it to the toilet.
Charlotte was holding back her hair while Julia threw up and suddenly something clicked.
“Jules, when was your last period?”
Julia fell silent and after a moment she turned red.
“Jules, when??!”
“About….about three months ago..”

Julia had made an appointment with her doctor. She was pretty sure that she was pregnant, all the signs were there. But she needed to know for sure.
Dr. Robertson was a nice guy, he had been her doctor for as long as she could remember. Not that she visited him regularly, but she felt at ease with him. He was the one who’d described her her first birth control pill. She had been thinking about that pill over the last couple of days, she had taken it as usual the day she had slept with Howard, and the day before and the day after. They had even used protection, how in God’s name was it possible for her to be pregnant? That was also a reason why she made the appointment, maybe there was some perfectly normal explanation why she threw up every other morning, had gained 4 pounds and had an energy level of a elderly person with two broken hips. She grunted, knowing that there weren’t many other explanations for it other than being pregnant.
She arrived at the clinic and installed herself in the waiting room. She hated the waiting room at the doctor’s, it was always full of older people with horrible coughs who were nagging about the weather and how everything had been better “before”. And if the waiting room wasn’t crammed with old people, it was stuffed with mothers and their babies. And especially today, that was something she couldn’t cope with. She dreaded to see the waiting room filled with the smell of baby snot and wet nappies, crying babies everywhere and mothers ignoring their babies crying and blabbing on about how fast they grew and what not.
Today, thank goodness, was a quiet day. There was only one guy in there whose foot was in a cast, and therefore he was obviously there for something non contagious which helped Julia get into a better mood.
She was called in early after arriving and she entered Dr. Robertson’s room.

“Congratulations Julia, you’re about three months pregnant. It’s kind of late for you to find out now to be honest…” He stopped talking when he saw the look on her face. “I presume this wasn’t the test result you’d hoped for?”
“Fuck,” was all she could say.
“Yeah, that’s what it usually starts with you know.” Dr. Robertson said jokingly but Julia was most definitely not in the mood for cracking jokes.
“How the hell is it possible to be pregnant when I was on the pill and used a condom?” she asked him.
“It’s a slim chance, very slim. But it’s possible. You are most definitely very pregnant.”
“What am I going to do?” She asked and all of a sudden she collapsed and cried to the news which would make most women celebrate.
“Do you know who’s the father of this baby?”
“Yes,” she sobbed.
“Maybe you should contact him and find a solution together. You still have many options you know.”
“What do you mean, “options”?
“What I am saying is, there are still possibilities if you are very sure that you do not want to have this baby. Think about this news very, very good and come back to me in a couple of days. We’ll get it sorted either way.”
Julia nodded and blew her nose on a tissue he handed her. “Oh my God..” she gasped.
“What?”
“ Do you know how many Gin Tonics I’ve had over those three months, and all the fags I smoked…”
Dr. Robertson smiled. “Julia, babies have been born under much worse circumstances than those five GT’s and two fags that you’ve had. It’ll be alright, just go home and think things over.”
***
Julia stood naked in front of her full length mirror and looked at herself. Her stomach wasn’t bigger than usual and it was strange thinking that inside of her grew a little person, a baby, a human being. It didn’t feel like that at all. She had imagined being pregnant would be joyful. There wasn’t much joy in her life at this point. The little growing thing inside of her didn’t feel like a baby, it felt like something had invaded her body. How was she going to support a baby? Her parents were no longer alive, her father had died when Julia wasn’t even born and her mother died five years ago of breast cancer. Her mother had been sick for a long time and Julia had had the chance to say goodbye to her and grand her final wishes as best as she could. It hadn’t been easy times but Julia felt that she and her mother had done the best they could have done under the circumstances. If only her mother had been here to give her advice things would certainly have been easier.
“You should call him,” Charlotte said, obviously talking about Howard. “He has a right to know.”
“I’m not calling him.” Julia said calm.
“Why not?”
“Because, well because I don’t want him in my life, I don’t want him deciding over something that is inside of ME. Because he’s busy enough with one pregnant woman already.”
“That’s bullshit Julia and you know it, I’m sure he’d want to know if you are carrying his child!”
“Well, that’s too bad for him then, ‘coz I ain’t telling him.”
Charlotte knew that Julia had made her mind up on this, it was no use trying to convince Julia to call him anyway, and deep down Charlotte understood where she was coming from. But she also knew that it was morally wrong not telling Howard that she was pregnant with his child.
“Have you decided yet how you are going to do this?” Charlotte asked.
“No, not really. I was thinking of going over to mum and think things over.”
Charlotte nodded, Julia often visited her mum’s grave when she had to make a serious decision, like the time Julia still had been in a relationship with a great looking guy who treated her like shit. He didn’t hit her or anything, but he lied to her and often stole her money. Charlotte had talked about him to Julia a million times but nothing worked, then after a fight Julia had visited her mum’s grave, returned home and chucked her boyfriend out of the house; the best decision she’d ever made.
Charlotte gave her friend a little cuddle and said: “We’ll sort it out girl.”
***
Julia left and Charlotte started cleaning their apartment. It was a mess since Julia had only been inside the house for three months doing nothing but eating and hanging around. When she was putting away all papers, magazines and old bank statements that lay on the table she found the card Dawn had written Julia. Hesitantly, she folded it open and looked at the telephone number written on the card. She wasn’t the kind of person to do things behind other people’s back but when it was for the greater good…she took out her mobile and entered the number into her phone and saved it. Maybe, she thought, the number would come in handy.

Julia walked through the graveyard. She loved the subdued atmosphere there, she really couldn’t explain why but being there gave her a feeling of being more down to earth. As if all the gravestones of dead people gave her a wake up call that life was too short to worry too much. Her mother’s grave was a small, simple but pretty white marble stone with some flowers around it. Julia lighted the candle in the small lantern that hung over the grave. She never talked out loud to her mother, just being there was enough. She sat like that for a while, looking and thinking.
***
When Julia arrived home two hours later, her cheeks had some colour again and a load seemed to be lifted of her shoulders.
Charlotte felt happy to see her friend looking so much better and gave her a cup of tea and they settled in the chairs in the living room.
“I made a decision,” Julia said, “Maybe you won’t like it but it is my decision.”
“Jules, don’t worry you and your baby can stay here for as long as you like, no problem. I’ll even stop smoking around the house, much healthier for you and your baby.”
“You don’t have to stop smoking Charlie, I’m not keeping this baby.”
