The remainder of the first day at the new school went smoothly for the Bryar twins, Bob and Frank quickly becoming good friends, despite their little run-in at lunch, and Natalie having a good time with all of the boys as well. As they stood outside the front of the school waiting for their mom to come by to pick them up, they chatted with Frank and Ray who had stuck around to hang out for a little longer before heading their own ways, as Gerard and Mikey had to get home before the elder brother had to leave for work.
The four were talking about a party they were plotting as their annual pre-spring bash when Natalie’s cell phone started to ring. She laughed as she pulled it out, having forgotten that she had brought it with her, as she hadn’t picked up any signal on the base, so she hadn’t given it any more thought.
“And I thought I would have to get a completely new phone. Do you boys mind if I answer?”
“Go ahead, Natie, it’s probably just one of your friends from Chicago. Don’t wander off too far.”
“I won’t, Bobert.” Natalie opened the phone and held it to her ear. “Hello?”
“Natalie! I thought you would never answer. How are you?”
“Jonah? I thought I told you that when I moved I couldn’t see you any more. I don’t want to have the constant worry that long-distance relationships bring. Besides, we didn’t have the best relationship when we were only a few minutes apart.”
Natalie paced for a moment before sitting down under a large tree as she argued with the guy she had been dating in Chicago, if you could even call it dating. It had been more like they were just friends with benefits, at least in his mind it had seemed.
“But, Natalie ...”
“No, Jonah. No buts. I’m hanging up now. I don’t want to talk about this any more.”
Before anything else could be heard on the other end of the conversation, Natalie quickly shut her cell phone and sat for a moment feeling the strange urge to cry. She didn’t know why as she had never been terribly close with Jonah to begin with. She guessed that in the back of her mind she knew that her family could be forced to move any day. But something told her that it just wasn’t right with Jonah.
“Everything okay?”
Natalie jumped and looked up to see Frank standing beside where she had sat down, a worried expression on his face. She could see similar looks on Bob and Ray’s faces from where they stood.
“Just an ex who doesn’t understand the concept of a breakup.”
“Need me to talk to him? I would probably enjoy doing something like that. A new thing, of course, but still sounds like fun.”
Laughing at the grin on Frank’s face, Natalie shook her head lightly. She smiled at how she seemed to have already found a good group of friends. She took Frank’s hand and stood to walk back over to where Bob and Ray were waiting.
“No thanks, Frankie. But if I have any other over-zealous suitors, I’ll let you know.”
Bob gave a quick glance over Natalie when she walked back over with Frank to make sure she was alright, and gave her a quick smile, the worry easing as she returned it, letting him know that she was okay. She absently started to hum a song that had popped into her head, leaning against the small wall on the lawn of the school.
“What song is that?”
“It’s one by a band called As Tall As Lions. They play a lot of lounge type indie music. They’re really good. Humming is a habit of mine I suppose.”
“It’s alright. At least you can carry a tune, unlike some people we know.”
“And what’s that supposed to mean, Ray?”
Natalie giggled as Frank tackled Ray, pretending to beat him up, although it was clear they weren’t fighting. The group turned their attention back to the parking lot as they heard a car horn, and Bob and Natalie stood, picking up their bags. Frank stopped Natalie as she walked off towards their SUV, quickly jotting something down on her hand with a wink.
“Now you have all of our numbers. Call if you’re bored, I’m never busy.”
“Thanks, Frankie. See you tomorrow, you too Ray.”
As Natalie hopped off to join her mom and brother in the SUV, she didn’t notice the teasing smirks passed between the two other friends or the suspicious look on her brother’s face.

“Mom, why do we have to host these blasted neighborhood parties every time we move?”
“Because, Natalie, it’s a tradition for the new family to host a party to introduce themselves to the others on the base. And I thought you liked these events, you get to dress up and meet tons of new people.”
“Yeah, tons of adults who either don’t have kids or whose kids are little annoying brats. Could I at least try to invite one of our friends from school?”
“You and Bob have already made friends? That’s great honey. I don’t know if your father would agree, but if he says that it’s alright then sure.”
Natalie smiled and hopped off to the back yard where her father was grilling a batch of hamburgers for the party. She knew that she could easily get her father to agree, as she always could. She was a daddy’s girl and was perfectly happy with the situation.
“Dad, I was wondering if I could try to invite one of my new friends to the party tonight or if it’s just the military families?”
“Sorry, Nat, but it’s just for the families on the base. If it wasn’t, I wouldn’t mind meeting some of your new friends. Why don’t you go check my database and see if there are any kids your age on base?”
“That’s okay, Dad. I just thought I would ask. I have tons of homework and unpacking still left to do anyways.”
“Okay, Nat.”
Natalie turned and walked back inside, stopping by the kitchen to see what her mom was working on at the moment. Seeing her chopping up vegetables, Natalie walked over and leaned against the counter.
“Mom, is the phone hooked up yet?”
“Yeah, your father fixed it this morning. What did he say about inviting a friend over?”
“It’s just for the base families. Do you mind if I call someone?”
“Go ahead. But don’t talk too long.”
“Thanks Mom.”
Grabbing the phone on her way out of the kitchen, Natalie skipped upstairs and flopped down on her bed that she had just finished making up earlier and dialed the number still written on her hand before moving around the room to pull out her notebook to transfer the number to paper before she lost it. She bit her bottom lip at the sound of a female voice answer.
“Hello?”
“Umm, could I speak to Frank, please?”
“Yes, dear, hold on a moment.”
Natalie could hear the phone being covered and a muffled call for Frank to come pick up the phone. A few minutes later there was a shuffle and then she heard Frank’s voice.
“Hello.”
“Umm, hey Frankie, it’s Natalie. Did I call at a bad time?”
“No, Mom was just cooking. So, to what do I owe the honor?”
“Nothing really, just wasting some time before I have to go downstairs for a base family party thing. A boring party where we meet the other families who live here on the base. How exciting, I know.”
“You live on the military base?”
Natalie shuffled around in her bag looking for her iPod to put in her stereo to have some music as she talked. She found it and quickly put it in the stereo system she had gotten for her last birthday and turned on her music quiet enough to where she could still hear the phone conversation without causing too much noise.
“Yeah, that’s why we moved here in the first place. Dad’s a high ranking officer. Why?”
“Nothing, but I think this party might be a little less boring than the others you’re accustomed to.”
“I doubt it. Unless, what are you not telling me, Frankie?”
“Nope, I think I might let you have your little surprise.”
“Frankie, what are you hiding?”
Before she could wait to hear his answer, she heard the doorbell and groaned, followed by a knock on her door.
“Nevermind, I have to go anyways. That must be the first of the guests. Time to go be paraded around in front of the other people Dad works with.”
“Have fun, see you tomorrow, Natalie.”
“See you, Frankie.”
Natalie looked up to see her brother standing in her doorway with a small frown on his face. She knew the look, and knew that it wasn’t just from being forced to wear a tie again. Without even waiting to have her ask what was wrong he came in and sat down on the bed beside her.
“What’s up, Natie? First you’re listening to As Tall as Lions, which you only do when you’re upset about something. Then I come in to find you on the phone with one of the guys we just met today. Don’t tell me you’re already trying to get another boyfriend. And don’t try to pull the ‘I’m okay’ stunt with me, I’m still your twin brother, Natie.”
“Bobert, chill. I was just calling someone because I was bored. As for the music, I just felt like listening to them, okay? Can’t I listen to a good band without having to have some ulterior motive?”
“No, I just know that this band means something’s wrong. Plus I can tell you’re upset. But right now we have to go play the perfect little children, the guests are already showing up.”
“Bob, Natalie, come down here you two!”
Natalie stood and walked out of her room towards the stairs, although when she reached the bottom of them, she giggled into her hand. So this was what Frankie had been talking about.

A/N: Okay, so I don't own As Tall As Lions either (damn!). But their music is AMAZING! So check them out sometime if you get the chance. Enjoy!
