Chapter 5 - Where to now?
Jaejoong didn’t wake Mirell for the second shift. He stayed awake then entire night, and wondered what they would do.
Whether they should sit still and wait for help to find them or tried to get out. He was sure Changmin wouldn’t be able up and able to walk for weeks if not months.
They could take turns carrying him but how good was that for him. If they moved away from the plane and the black box that had been in it, would they walk away from being rescued?
Jaejoong felt so confused, one thing he was sure of, they needed to find food. They wouldn’t last three days without it and Changmin would probably die the first day without food.
The though terrified him. And flashes of people screaming to their deaths echoed in his mind.
Flashing images of burnt bodied, bodies cut in half, or arm less, head less, entered his mind and he gaged violently for several moments before getting control of his lucky empty stomach.
He panted and wipe sweat from his brow and looked down at the 5 sleeping bodies. He had gone down every hour, to check on Changmin who seem to be stable for the moment.
Jaejoong was glad his watch still worked, so he could keep track of time. He stretched and looked up at the lightening sky.
Day was breaking but the sky was filled with dark storm clouds. He climbed down and woke Mirell up gently.
“Mirell....Mirell...”
“Hmm? Jeajoong? What wrong?” She asked groggily and looked into Jeajoong’s dark eyes.
What she saw scared her. His eyes were over bright, haunted, scared.
“I’m going to look for food, keep watch, ok?” He told her.
She nodded and watched him climb down the tree, and into the woods. She shook her head, of course he was scared, its only natural. She looked up at the sky.
It was day break, meaning Jaejoong had stayed up all night. She sighed and stood up, stretching her stiff body and went to check Changmin.
Changmin stirred under her touch, his eyes fluttered open.
“Hmm?”
“Hey, Changmin, how are you feeling?” she asked softly, touching his brow, finding it hot.
“Tired...sore....” he mumbled, “Who are you?”
“That’s the girl who saved your life.” Junsu replied sleepily, as he stirred awake.
“I’m Mirell Santiago. You need to rest as much as possible. But right now I need you to tell me exactly how you feel. What hurts, what doesn’t, what does it feel like. Lots of details. I know your tired but I need you to do this.”
“Ok....” he mumbled.
After several minutes, she sighed, “Ok, just rest.”
Changmin drifted into unconsciousness.
Junsu looked at her, “What is it?”
“I think there is an infection and possible metal shards inside the wound. I noticed it when I was snitching him up, I tried to remove as much as possible but there was only so much I could do. Try to make sure he doesn’t move to much, the shards can tear up his insides, and the infection is going to spread if we don’t get him help soon. It’s not that bad right now but with time.....well, let just hope it doesn’t come to that.”
Junsu sighed heavily and looked down at the fragile boy in his arms and pulled him gently closer.
“Where is Jae?” Junsu asked looking around.
“Went to find food.” Mirell replied.
Junsu nodded and closed his eyes, leaning his head against the trunk.
Mirell stood up and checked on Junsu and Yoochun, they were sound asleep, leaning on each other. They didn’t seem like they would fall out of the tree so she left them alone and climbed up where Jaejoong had been sitting.
---------- --------- ------------- ------------ -------------- ------------
Jeajoong had climbed down the tree after telling Mirell he was going to look for food. That had been half true, the other half was that he needed to be alone and find some place he could vent.
He looked around for anything he could think was edible. He actually found an apricot tree, and checked the fruit and found it ripe.
He torn more of his quickly shortening shirt and made a crude sack and filled it with fruit, just enough for the day.
He could always come back and get more, thought there wasn’t much left. He tied the sack around his waist and continued forward.
He didn’t know how long he walked nor did he care, he finally sat down and broke down. He cried and screamed, the images of the crash playing inside his head like a broken record player.
He thought he might go mad. He bit his lower lip hard until it bleed, licking the split lip. Finally he started to calm down, panting, tears still streaming down his face uncontrollably.
He took several deep breaths then forced himself to return to the others. He approached the trees, with his sack of fruit and watched as Yoochun climb down to meet him.
“Hey, Jea, find anything?” He asked.
“Actually, yea, some apricot.” Jeajoong replied with a smile.
They climbed the tree together and walked to whether the others where sitting talking softly so they didn’t wake Changmin who still slept in Junsu’s arms.
Mirell smiled at them, “Find any food?”
Jeajoong nodded, “Fruit. Apricot.”
Mirell smiled, “Oh, that’s prefect, apricot is great for the stomach, so with the lack of nourishment we will being having, this will help a lot. I made a small water fountain earlier with leaves.”
She pointed at the rain water the slide down leaves, on a branch from the tree, she had moved to catch it, and fall into a leave filled hole, dug into the ground below.
“I covered the bottom of the hole with leaves so the dirt wouldn’t rise too much, but once it settles it should be drinkable, but for now, we can just catch rain water, sliding down towards it.”
Jeajoong looked impressed, “Smart.”
He then handed out the fruit, which they ate happily. Junsu woke Changmin gentle and helped him eat, but he didn’t eat more then a few bites.
“Changmin, you need to eat.” Junsu said.
“I can’t....I feel like I’m going to throw up.” Changmin said softly.
“You should tried, you’ll only feel worse if you don’t. Just one.” Mirell said.
Changmin pouted sickly but ate the fruit, looking sicker with each bite.
Jeajoong also played with his fruit, feeling a bit sick to his stomach as well.
“Jea?” asked Yunho.
“Hmm?” Jeajoong replied, taking a bite.
“Nothing.” Yunho replied, eyeing him.
Yoochun spoke up, “So what are we going to do now? Stay here? Leave?”
Junsu replied, “We are safe here, we have shelter, we’ve found food, we have water.”
“But for how long, it isn’t going to rain forever, and there was only one tree that I found with fruit.” Jeajoong answered back.
“Changmin really shouldn’t be moved, but if he isn’t taken to a hospital...”Mirell added with a helpless shrug.
“I’ll be fine, I can make it.” Changmin interjected, his voice cracking.
“I think we should wait here for a few days, and if no one finds us, then leave.” Yunho replied.
Mirell nodded, “That doesn’t sound too bad, we can rest up, and collect food, tried to find a way to hold water as well. But we can’t wait here too long either. I mean we have no idea where the black box landed it could be miles from here if not farther, who knows how high we were when the plane blew.”
“The plane blew up?” asked Junsu, “I thought it crashed.”
“Pieces crashed but lightning hit the plane, that’s what really destroyed it.”
“What?” asked Yunho.
“I think that’s when every one blacked out and though we crashed.” Mirell replied.
“You didn’t?” Jeajoong asked surprised, more for the fact that he wasn’t the only one.
Mirell shook her head and paled, “No....I didn’t. But lets not talk about it. The point it, the black box could be next to us or away from us, we don’t know. We need to assume, that a rescue party is out there somewhere. We could leave messages as we move, so if someone passes it, they will see it.”
“But where are we?” asked Changmin weakly.
“China.” Mirell answered.
“What!?” replied five voices.
“You didn’t hear the captain? There was a really bad storm over Korea so they have to over shoot it and were going to land in China.”
“We must have been asleep.” Junsu replied.
The others nodded.
“Well, that is where we are.” Mirell answered.
The others sat, pondering.
Yoochun spoke first, “I think Yunho’s idea is the best. Stay for a few days, plan, rest, and get supplies together.”
The others agreed and they began to plan, and decided what they needed to find, and collect.
