Chapter Five: The Issues at Hand
Silence, I hate the silence. Maddie thought as she walked down the stairs after checking to make sure Aly had gone to bed and hadn’t pulled another Houdini act. She looked at the clock It’s only 9, I know one of them has to be awake. As Maddie mentally debated which friend she should call she sipped the soda she had just opened, having decided she picked up her cell phone and dialed.
“Trista’s strip joint, you pay you stay.” Maddie could tell she was pretty drunk.
“Trista? Are you busy? I can call you later” She knew Trista wasn’t going to just let her hang up.
“Nope, not getting away that fast my darling. What’s up?” Maddie could hear the background noise lessen and assumed Trista had left the exciting part of the party.
“There’s more to this family then I thought. Something happened to the little girl that no one will tell me. Trista, I lost her.”
“What the fuck, you lost her? Where were you?”
“In this fucking mansion. I lost her in this fucking house. How pathetic do I sound?”
“OK hold on, you need to start from the beginning.” Maddie knew she had called the right person. She explained everything that had happened, from hitting Pete’s girlfriend with her car door which got her a sarcastic “you hit another girl with your car door” to being a little too forward about the coffee which got her a loud laugh to Aly not being in her room or any of the rooms she had searched including the master bedroom or closet, which got her a “Did you steal one of those really cute hoodies?” to Patrick and the words he spoke about harming the little girl. When she finished she was angry again and all she heard on the other line was silence and she couldn’t help the “Well” that came out of her mouth.
“Someone hurt a little girl? That’s some fucked up shit, I mean who can hurt an innocent child? You know what you have to do Maddie.” Trista left the sentence at that.
“No I don’t Trist, I don’t know what to do and that’s the problem. Do I ask him about it or let him come to me?”
“Let him come to you my ass. He knew this was going to happen and he didn’t even warn you. After everything that you went through with Tonya, I oughta come over there right now and kick his fucking ass.”
“Confront him? What, Trista you know I don’t do well with confrontation.”
“Maddie, he hired you to take care of his little girl. If he trusts you enough to do that but doesn’t even warn you about her past, not even one fucking sentence. Man if I hadn’t had way too much to drink, I’d be on my way there right now. Maddie, you have to stand up for yourself don’t back down. Figure out what happened and don’t take no for answer.” Trista knew the concept of fighting for what she deserved to know was foreign to Maddie but she also knew that if she got Maddie angry enough she wouldn’t be able to back down from Pete.
“Shit the front door just opened I gotta go. I’ll call you on my way home.” With that she hung up not waiting for Trista’s response.

The whole day was hell for Pete, Patrick would barely look at him, Andy was trying to be supportive but he could still feel his disappointment and Joe seemed to be oblivious to it all. On his drive home his thoughts turned to Aly and Maddie, I wonder how mad she’s going to be when I get home, unsure of which one he was actually referring to. Aly’s probably asleep and Maddie’s probably waiting for me to get home so she can have a conversation with me. This is the first time Pete has ever dreaded going home, he just didn’t know what to expect from Maddie. Before he could dwell on it to badly his phone rang.
“Yeah?” Was the only thing he could muster.
“Look Pete, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get so angry earlier. You just promised me that you would tell whoever you hired the truth and when I found Maddie, it just was really hard for me to keep my emotions in check.” Patrick was being honest, not wanting to make Pete angry.
“It’s ok, ‘Trick. I know I should have told her. I just…I was hoping that maybe Maddie would be different. I wanted Maddie to be different for Aly. I wish I had thought my decision through more but I didn’t and I can’t take it back now.” Pete felt completely desperate for his friend to understand.
“I know but Pete you have to talk to her. Lay it out, let her know what happened because if you don’t then the two of you are going to have issues.”
“I will, just I need sometime to do it. I need to think about what I’m going to say.” He drove his car up through the gates and into his usual parking spot. He looked around catching sight of the little Honda civic that could only be Maddie’s. “I’m home, I gotta see if I can fix some of the mess I made. I’ll see you in the morning right?”
“Yea I’ll be there. Just ya know try ok? The sooner the better.” With that Patrick hung up not wanting to hear Pete make another excuse as to why he shouldn’t tell her.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
As Pete walked through the hall way and passed the kitchen towards the living room he could feel the tension in the air thicken with each step he took. She isn’t going to let this go. Maddie could hear his reluctance to enter the room she was sitting in by the way his feet shuffled.
“Well, don’t just stand there hovering either come in or don’t” Pete could hear the frustration in her voice.
“Maddie, all I can say is that I’m sorry. I’m sorry I didn’t mention anything about her fears or about the places she hides.”
“Sorry?” Snorting very un-lady like, “You’re sorry? That’s seriously all I’m going to get? After everything that Patrick said and everything I’ve been through today all you’re going to say is I’m sorry?” He went to say something but before he could, “No I don’t think so, that’s not how this conversations going to go.”
“Wait, I think I’m your boss and I think that means that I get to decide whether or not I tell you certain things about my life.” How dare her!
“You’re life? I could care less about you’re life, what I need to know about is Aly’s life and that’s what this conversation is going to be about because if you want me to take care of your daughter than I need to know the things that might have happened in the past but still affect her life in the present! Who hurt her? What was Patrick talking about?”
“No, no NO! I’m not talking about this right now; I need you to understand that I’m going to have to think about what you need to know and what you don’t need to know about my daughter.”
“NEED to know? I fucking need to know everything, Pete she disappeared for almost forty five minutes. I NEED to know why.”
“You’re her nanny, not her sister and definitely not her mother all you need to know is that she’s healthy. I thought you said you had been a nanny before, what did they fire you because you were too busy sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong instead of actually watching the kid.” He didn’t know what he had said that made her face fall and cause the tears to well up.
“You wanna know why I don’t work for my former employees anymore? Do you?” The calmness in her voice unnerved Pete, unsure of what to say he stayed quiet. “She’s dead. There you happy? She died, Her name was Tonya and she was 10 years old and she’s dead. She was killed by a drunk driver on her way home from her bus stop. So before you start lecturing me on what I am and what I’m not to your daughter, let me tell you something. I was Tonya’s nanny for 2 years, I was twenty when I first started and she became my everything. I tucked her in at night and I was the first thing she saw the next morning when she woke up. When she had nightmares I rocked her back to sleep, I slept on the floor of her bedroom when she didn’t want to be alone. She was my life. For two years I walked her to and from the bus stop. Making sure that she got there ok and that she was never alone. When she asked me to let her walk to and from the bus stop alone for the first time, I cried because I was so sure that something was going to happen. And it did, the one time in my life I went against my gut, I let her do it. She walked to the bus stop by herself and called me from school when she got there, she sounded so happy. And again I decided against my better judgement to let her walk home alone also.” Taking a deep breathe she continued, “I was pacing when I heard the sirens go by the house and when the noise didn’t lessen I ran outside because all I could think about was Tonya and how she could be hurt. I turned the corner and saw a car smashed into a tree. I felt relieved that it was a car, until I looked towards where the ambulance was parked and saw her body. I ran towards her, dropped to my knees and pulled her close. I don’t remember much after that. All I know is what my friends tell me, I was a mess. I didn’t talk to anyone for a month.” Looking up for the first time since she had started the story, “So before you start lecturing me, you have to understand the terror I felt when I couldn’t find your little girl. All I could see was Aly’s lifeless body in the same awkward position that Tonya’s was in.” She let him take everything in, she saw the guilt and pity on his face.
“God, I’m so sorry Maddie, I didn’t know. I just can’t imagine going through that.” He watched as she tried to wipe at the tears that had smeared her mascara down her face. He knew that she deserved to know, “Aly has only lived with me for two and half years, she lived with her mom before that. I actually didn’t even know about her until I found her on my doorstep. Almost a year ago, Hannah, Aly’s biological mom, took her from me. My mother and I had no say, she had court papers but I had grown quite fond of her by then. Truthfully she was more like a little sister than my daughter but the night of her birthday everything changed. I had went to Hannah’s house to give Aly the present I had bought for her and I could hear her crying through the door. It wasn’t the normal tears of a 5 year old either, it was heavy sobs and her begging for her mom to leave her alone. The door was unlocked so I walked in and what I saw disgusted me, she had my little girl lying on the floor and was pour beer into her mouth. She didn’t care that she was hurting her, she was on every drug known to man and I couldn’t control my anger. I threw Hannah across the room, picked Aly up and left. I’ve never looked back, but Aly hasn’t been able to trust women since then. She hides, she claws her way away from them and she begs me not to leave her alone with them. I just hoped you would be different, the moment you walked in I knew you were perfect for her, your personality and how seriously you took this opportunity. I just never realized what my lies would do to both of us.” Pete took a deep breathe, he looked at Maddie.
She knew he wanted a response, but what do you say to that. What mother hurts there own child and doesn’t even care. Maddie leaned over and took Pete’s hands in her own not saying anything just holding them in her lap. Neither knew how much they truly needed each other until Aly walked in wanting to know if she could sleep with Pete tonight. When he let go of her hands, she couldn’t help the frown that found it’s way on her face. She felt alone again, for a moment when she was holding Pete’s hands she felt almost whole, like he was the only person who truly understood her.

“Did you brush your teeth?” Aly’s nodded her head extravagantly, “Wash behind your ears?” Another nod, “How about between your toes and under your arms?” As he asked he tickled her feet and lifted her high in the air while making his way to his bedroom.
“Of course daddy, I do it every night!” Her laugh was contagious making Pete chuckle at her words.
“You sure you wanna sleep with daddy? You know how I like to snore, kick and talk while I sleep.” He was still tickling her lightly on her feet so her answer came out in a breathless giggle, “Please daddy? The boogey monster’s back in my closet.”
“The boogey monster huh? Well I guess I’m just going to have to have a little talk with him,” He entered her room and gently threw her onto her bed. Before she could answer he had disappeared into her closet. Her eyes were widening with every passing second that he was in there. She had just swung her legs over the side to stand up when he walked out smiling. “Alright well, boog and I had a talk and he said that he just needed to borrow your closet for the night but he’ll be gone by morning so you’ll be able to sleep in here tomorrow.”
“Daddy you talked to the boogey man and he didn’t eat you? Danielle told me that if you look the boogey man in the eye he will eat you.” She stared at him in awe.
“Danielle? Daddy’s girlfriend Danielle?” Pete questions his daughter. When she nodded he rolled his eyes, “Well Danielle lies sometimes and I’ll talk to her about it as soon as I get a chance ok?”
“Your so my new favorite hero!! Can we have ice cream before bed?” Her innocent green eyes stare back at him almost daring him to say no.
“Uhh as long as you don’t tell anyone about our midnight sundae feast especially Uncle Patrick and Maddie.”At her name he felt the little girl tense a little, “How do you feel about Maddie? You like her?”
Maddie? How do I feel about her? No matter how rude I was she kept a smile on her face. Pete was unsure of what was going through Aly’s mind but the smile and the words that came out of her mouth surprised him. “Well, I guess she can stick around for a little while.”
