Calls erupted from the people sitting in the room, but one voice made all grow to silence. “What problem is that we have, Bryar? And who are you friends?”
Persephone turned to the man in question, anger and hatred showing plainly on her face. “Count Delano, I did not know you tended these meetings anymore.”
“Well when I hear from my contacts that the great Persephone Bryar has a serious problem and needs help, I am more than willing to attend a meeting or two. Now again I ask, what is the problem and who are you friends?” The nearly seven foot tall man had a groveling voice that demanded attention. Too bad Persephone was not one to give it to him.
“As I was saying, we have a serious problem. Upon my exploration of Contract Valley last night, I found a large number of vampires and demons.” Protests from the crowd caused her to stop and she raised her hand, ensuing silence. “I could not defeat them all myself and in the process was injured.”
“But, Ms. Bryar, what if they find out about the components of your blood’s composition? The ramifications could be disastrous for all of us.” Patrick Smith, local researcher and all around nerd, spoke from the front row, almost hidden by his short stature and the taller people around him.
Persephone couldn’t help but notice everyone looking at Bob, Mikey, and Frank. Noticing that, she couldn’t help see the look of anger on Bob’s face at the Ms. from Rick. She smiled pleasantly to herself before turning back to Rick. “I know, Rick, I know. That’s why we have to organize a strike before they get the chance to realize what potential weapon they have lying on the ground outside their resting place. We need a preemptive strike.”
“Yes, we have gotten that, Bryar, but you have yet to tell us who your friends are?” Persephone was so close to taking one of her blades and throwing it at Count Delano that she barely felt Virginia Prince grabbed her hand. She looked down and frowned at the blade she had clutched between her fingers.
Sheathing the blade, she looked back up at the count and sighed. “The tall one with dark hair is my brother, Mikey Way. The other one with dark hair is my best friend from high school, Frank Iero, and the blonde one is … He’s my husband, Bob Bryar.”
“What the fuck are you talking about, P? I thought you said your husband was killed in Contract Valley and that all your friends and family disappeared in the fire.”
Persephone turned to Virginia at the response to the introduction, ignoring all others who had the same protest, and sighed. “He did die, is dead. Oh I don’t know how the hell to explain it, Nia. And they did disappear in the fire. Apparently, there were a few survivors.”
“How can he be dead when he’s standing in front of us, Bryar? And your supposed brother and friend do not look completely human. Do you care to explain that?” Oh how Persephone would love to beat that smug look off his face.
She moved to say something and heard a growl off to her left where her guys were standing. She looked over and noticed Mikey’s face grow feral. “You had better stop talking to my sister like that, if you know what’s good for you.”
“Mikey! Don’t.” Persephone’s voice was harsh and angry. He may be her older brother, but there was no way she was going to let him turn her office into a place of chaos. It was the only constant she had. She turned back to the Count and smiled innocently. “They’re not human.”
Everyone near the front of the room, except for Nia and Rick, backed away from Frank and Mikey as if they were diseased. The other two merely stood there looking like it was no big deal for non-humans to be in their establishment, which wasn’t so far off.
“No offence, Ms. B, but what the fuck do you think you’re doing bringing them here? We’re supposed to kill non-humans, not be friends with them.”
“How many of us are really completely human anymore? Seriously. Think about it. Half of us can run faster, see farther, and take more damage than even the vampires we hunt. If they’re not dangerous, I see no reason why they can’t be here.”
“What about your husband? Is he human?” A random newbie in the back row who looked surprisingly shocked at the prospect that there were dangerous creatures in the room spoke up in a squeaky voice. He wouldn’t last a year in this business.
“No, I’m not.” Bob spoke up before Persephone could even think of a response. She moved to stop him before he did something stupid, but it was too late. His wings flared out behind him in a display of angelic magnificence. Gasps went out throughout the entire room as they realized he was, in essence, dead. “Persephone did not lie to you. I did die, but I was given another chance.”
Persephone held her breath, waiting for him to continue, glad when he didn’t. She felt his eyes on her, but said nothing, looking over the crowd. “Anyway, now that Bob has proven that your boss is not a liar and we’re in serious trouble, I think we should talk about what we need to do next.”
“Kill us some vampires, of course!” Persephone couldn’t help but laugh as her assistant yelled over top of all the noise. She received several whoops in return and Persephone nodded, listening to several ideas as to how they could best do it. She heard one suggestion, from Rick, that really seemed to click.
“Say that again, Rick.”
“I was merely stating that if we wanted to buy some time to inhibit the vampires and demons from realizing the potential danger they are in, that we send an extraction team to clean up the blood you left in the town before the sun sets this evening.”
“Rick, you are a genius! Volunteers from the extraction squad? I can get a police escort to Contract Valley here in minutes.” Persephone nodded as a group in the back, infamous for working quickly, raised their hands. “Perfect. I want you all out of there no later than an hour before the sun sets. Ok?”
Persephone smiled as they nodded and immediately left the room. She turned back to the others and looked around. Several veterans who had been doing this since she started the business four years ago stood in the room, but more were newbies who had never seen a vampire, nevertheless killed one. She sighed and glanced at Mikey and Frank. “I think we should sleep on it tonight and meet back here at 9 am to discuss the plan for tomorrow night. I’m too tired to have to worry about arguing.”
She walked from the podium and past the boys, who followed quickly behind her. She moved through the groups of people around the office until she came to her office. She walked inside and pulled a book on the bookcase, which swung open and revealed an elevator. She gestured for the guys to get in and took it upstairs to what was obviously her apartment. “Make yourselves at home, guys. I need to take a shower.”
She walked into her bedroom and headed straight for the bathroom, stripping out of her clothes and stepping into the large tub, letting the water from the shower wash the remnants of blood from her body. She heard the door to her bedroom open and groaned. She didn’t need anything but silence right now, and the guys were anything but silence.
“Persephone?” Oh great, just what she needed.
“What do you want, Bob? I’m kind of in the middle of something.”
“We need to talk.”
“About what, Bob? About how you thought I would just run into your arms when I realized you were alive? Or how about how I spent the first year of my life without you trying to find new and interesting ways to kill myself? That should be an interesting topic for you, huh?”
Persephone heard the bathroom door open and pulled the curtain back, looking at him. She let the anger and hurt she felt show on her face. “Maybe I did expect you to run into my arms, that only makes me human, right? And I’m sorry I had to die to realize how much I need you, love you. I’m sorry that I couldn’t find the strength to leave Contract Valley before today.”
He looked at her and Persephone felt the familiar ache deep within her. She would not let him back in, could not. He had destroyed so much of what she had been with his death. It wouldn’t be right for her to go back to the life she had once known.
She didn’t realize she had been looking at the floor until she felt his finger touch her chin, moving her to look up at him. She was glad that she was soaking wet and he couldn’t see the tears. She shook her head. “I can’t go back to being the Persephone you knew, Bob. It’s impossible.”
“I don’t want the Persephone I knew. I just want you, no matter what you’ve become.” And his lips were on hers. She returned the kiss, this time, not thinking about getting away from him. She felt him move and pulled back to see him standing in front of her nude, clothes at his feet.
She knew that it was too late to turn back, knew that she needed him too much right now to tell him no. She had spent five years of her life wishing for this and there he was, standing before her as he used to when they were newlyweds. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he kissed her again, climbing into the shower with her.
She felt the new strength in his body and knew that this was definitely going to be an experience to remember. She gasped as he plunged himself deep inside her with preamble, smiling at her shock from inches away. She wrapped her legs around his waist, burying him deeper inside her and letting him feel her own strength. He shoved her against the wall, cracking the linoleum, causing a moan to escape her lips as her moved within her.
She took the momentum she had from the rough shove and drove him into the back wall, planting her legs against the back of the tub and pulling up so that he was barely inside her any longer. She moved back into his body, thrusting him deeper inside her and heard a very masculine growl come from him as he spun around quickly, beating her against the wall again. She heard a few tiles fall, but was too far gone as he started a steady rhythm, fast, hard, and almost violent. She knew that the bathroom would be destroyed, but as she bit his shoulder as the first orgasm washed over her, she wasn’t sure she cared.
Even as she climaxed, he kept going, harder and faster. She held onto his shoulder, digging her fingernails deep into his skin, bringing blood to the surface. Again, she climaxed, but he was insatiable and kept pounding her against the wall. She could feel blood coming from her back but had never in all her years with him thought he was capable of such violent debauchery. She screamed as another orgasm washed over her, pleased and disappointed at the same time to see that he had climaxed as well.
She lay at the bottom of the tub with him on top of her, still buried deep inside her, and fought for breath. When it finally came, she laughed and shook her head against his shoulder. “I was going to tell you that this is no way means we’re back to being a happily married couple, but I’m not too sure I want to give that up. You are going to have to replace my bathroom tiles though.”
Bob laughed as he moved gently to pull himself out of her. She moaned at the slight pain that shot through her body at the movement, but refused to move or say anything more. She returned the kiss he gave her with great enthusiasm. “I should have told you that I learned a few tricks in heaven. I never tried any of them, but I learned the general concepts. Glad to see you enjoyed them.”
“You have no idea, Bob. Really, you don’t.” Persephone lay beside him in the large tub, looking at him closely. She sighed and ran her hand down his chest. “What does this mean for us, Bob? I’ve lived so long without you. I don’t know if I can immediately go back to being a couple.”
“Then don’t, Persy. We’ll start from scratch, excluding what we just did, of course.” He smiled widely and stood, pulling her gently to her feet. She put her hands on his shoulders to keep her balance, realizing she was having a hard time standing. “What the hell …? Remind me to beat the shit out of you later. I feel like that’s about what you did to me.”
“I think I might like it if you beat the shit out of me, Persy.”
“Oh shut up and go get dressed. There’s a bedroom with clothes in the closet you, Frank, and Mikey could use. My roommate won’t care. He’s always happy to share his homosexual fashion sense with heteros.” Persephone laughed and wrapped a towel shakily around herself, shoving him out of the bedroom. “Go!”
She locked the door and sat on the bed. What a day. First she vows never to have anything to do with him again. Then she destroys her bathroom with the most mind blowing sex she had ever had with the man in the five years she had been married to him before his death. Now she was actually starting a relationship with him again. What else could happen today?
