The next time I woke up, it was to a hand lightly brushing against my bare shoulder. “Lizzi,” someone said softly. It was Mikey, “we need to get up. The sun is almost down, Gerard called a while ago and said to be ready by 8... He’s picking us up.”
I yawned, “What time is it? I’m tired,” I said softly.
“It’s past seven. Listen, we need to block out what happened... I can keep Gerard from prodding my mind, but you’re not strong enough, I’m going to have to keep him out of your head, which may make you dizzy, but you need to stay alert. If one of us screws up, we could both be killed... What we did, what we feel is forbidden in our realm, Lizzi... Even for you, the one with all the power... Or well, you will be when Gerard transforms you,” he said honestly.
I wanted to smile slightly, I don’t know why, but I didn’t have a thing for Mikey. I could see myself with him; however, due to the severity of what he was saying, I held back the urge to smirk. “I’m ready to nod off to sleep as it is...”
Mikey thought for a long moment. “Are you willing to trust me, even if I make a rather odd request?” he asked, his expression a pleading one.
“Yeah, I suppose so... I mean, if genuinely can’t lead me wrong, then yeah, I’d have no reason not to...” I said softly. I don’t know why, but, ‘enemy’ or not, I felt Mikey was on my side. If you were to ask me, I’d say he sincerely wanted me to be happy and content, even if that meant that I refused to be his, and the rest of their leader. It wasn’t just a hunch, it was something deep within my veins telling me this was fact; telling me that he, not Elizabeth Bathory, was my destiny.
He tilted his head at me and smirked, “There’s a reason for all of that, and if you want, I’ll tell you about it in a minute... But first, getting back to your energy level... If you well, essentially drink, my blood even in a small amount, you’ll be up all night. There’s something in it that acts as a stimulant on humans, and since you still are human, it’ll work. It won’t turn you into one of us; to do that, I’d have to feed off you first. I have to warn you, Gerard may do that tonight... I don’t know for sure.”
“I don’t want to live forever,” I whispered. “I want to live for now... I want to get old, have kids, have an actual life Mikey, I want to die someday, like everyone else.”
“Your great-great, etcetera, grandmother used to say, ‘Everyone wants to live forever’ Gerard lives by that statement and I, like you, disagree. But neither of us have a choice, really. I’m supposed to live at least as long as you do,” he said softly, before purposely biting his tongue until blood trickled from a puncture. His hand snaked around to the base of my skull, his fingers entwined in my hair as he pulled me toward him in a deep kiss. We, no doubt, kissed far longer than necessary before pulling apart. I rested my head on his chest. “Do you want to hear a story?” he asked.
At twenty five years old, to have someone ask me that was a bit odd. However, figuring it had to hold some relativity to what was going on the last few days, I nodded, “Sure.”
“In the beginning of civilization there were two lovers, Gabriel and Sari. Sari was the daughter of a king, located in what is now modern day Hungary and Gabriel was a young general of the Roman Empire. The Romans were quickly destroying and occupying all the independent and well established countries and lands and had headed for Hungary. Sari’s father, King István, immediately declared war on Rome. He could barely defend against the great empire, and soon he was killed and his once great palace was raided. Lucky, or unlucky, for the two of them, Gabriel found Sari before anyone else. When entering the palace, everyone knew to leave no survivors of the original monarchy, servants included. Gabriel knew who Sari was, but something about her captivated the General and he couldn’t kill her. Something about her hopeless stare, her immediately accepting her doomed fate, her fearlessness and beauty, hooked him. He fell in love. He fell for the daughter of a direct enemy of the Roman Empire. He fell for what would surely be his death. But she loved him as well, and love was much simpler back then. People weren’t inhibited, they felt love and they could admit it freely. Back then, love at first sight, truly existed... So he smuggled her out of the palace before anyone noticed, hiding her deep in the woods and told her to wait there. The two devised a plan in four days, she’d stumble onto a road asking for help, he’d come to her aid and bring the “stranger” back to Rome. Each night, he’d sneak away from his men to be with her in the forest, the two learning all there was to learn about each other. Making a vow to be together in this life and the next. On the third night, the night before their plan was to take place, Gabriel was followed by a colonel--- the second roman in command of the legion, and a few foot soldiers. Realizing what was happening, and who Sari was, the colonel declared treason and imprisoned both of them for execution. The next day, the two knelt, bound, in front of the most powerful army on earth; swords raised by two soldiers behind them, ready to kill them swiftly... And there before the most powerful army, two lovers declared the most powerful vow... That they would once again be together..." he said, finishing the tale.
I smiled, “I enjoyed that...I feel like I’ve heard it before... Like I’ve seen it.”
“Of course you do...” he smiled. “You see, before your grandmother died, she called me in alone and told me that story. Telling me that I must never tell another soul, besides you. Gerard knew that you were the heir to the throne of the vampire realm, she picked Frank as your mate merely because she doesn’t trust Gerard and she needed to name someone. She knew he’d be quick to claim you as his own, ruling vampires along side you as it pleased him. He’d destroy us in the long run. You see in a past life, Lizzi, you were the first immortal... You and I both were... We created something out of love that was more powerful than death. We became, vampires in that sense. You were Sari. You’re so quick to be comfortable with me because we’ve been lovers for centuries... We were the original star-crossed lovers. We have to figure out a way to be together, before Gerard gets to Frank... He’ll humor you and your grandmother’s memory for the time being, but eventually Frank will die of some mysterious “accident”, secretly at my brother’s hand. That’s why we have to hide ourselves. I’ll protect Frank the best I can, but we have to think of something... That will be increasingly hard once we leave tonight, as you’ll be watched like a hawk from now on no doubt...”
My jaw was on the floor yet, again, there was something in my blood that just knew he was telling the truth. “H-when? Wh- This is a lot of shit to take in,” I whispered, giving up on trying to stammer out questions. I was wide awake now and I wasn’t sure if it was because of the blood or because of the information.
“I’ll do my best to keep protect them, I swear... There’s one more thing though...”
I sighed, “What else?”
“You’re grandmother wasn’t evil... She was purely good. She was a vampire for the sole purpose of keeping to ancient lovers together... If we find a way to be together, restore order among the ranks, defeat my brother who is by far our biggest threat... We’ll end vampirism... They’ll be no need for them to exist anymore... We’ll be human... I’ll be human... I haven’t felt that in 400 years,” Mikey whispered as someone pulled up to the house and beeped.
