Chloe had never been happier to see the sun in her entire life. She crawled from the small hole just barely big enough for her to get through, and lay back against the grass of the clearing on the outskirts of town. Spencer came out of the tunnel a little ways after her and collapsed beside her, breathing hard.
“That was … a nice … climb.” Spencer’s voice broke the silence of the morning and Chloe sighed, nodding in agreement. She had known that her godfather would have done anything to keep his family safe, but she didn’t see how a three mile long tunnel you had to climb through to get out was really helping any.
Frank! She sat up and looked at Spencer, pulling herself to her feet. “We have to get Frank’s body to take back with us to Bryar Enterprises. I will not leave him to rot in this place.”
Spencer nodded and pulled himself up, aching all over. He started to follow her toward the town. As they hit the town limits, they pulled their weapons and made their way toward her house, seeing the trolls hitting the door over and over. Her godfather’s body lay about a hundred feet behind the trolls.
Chloe gestured for Spencer to stay where he was and slid down the hill, landing beside Frank’s body. She stopped, waiting to see if the trolls had heard her, and scooped the body up with ease, running at full speed back up the hill. She dropped to her knees as Spencer came above the hill and pulled the trigger on the gun he held. She heard the grunt of a troll and knew that they had been spotted.
She got up with Frank’s body over her shoulder and started to run at her vampire speed toward her car, stopping when she realized that she was forgetting Spencer. She shook her head and ran Frank’s body to the car, wrapping him in a blanket and leaving him in the trunk before heading back and finding Spencer surrounded by trolls.
Chloe smiled, knowing of only two ways to kill a troll and not having a grenade. She popped her neck and felt her fangs elongate, eyes going a solid green. She ran at the trolls and jumped on the nearest ones back, singing fangs deep into its neck, letting the blood fill her mouth, falling down the front of her clothing. She kicked it in the face and it felt dead to the ground.
She kicked off the ground and grabbed another one around the neck, again, sinking fangs deep into the neck and feeling the warm blood spill down her clothes. She went through all five trolls, staring down at the last one before turning her solid green eyes and blood covered body to Spencer, walking towards him, fangs still visible. “Are you alright, Spencer?”
“What the fuck was that?” Spencer looked terrified at Chloe and she merely stood there, blood covering her body, thinking it perfectly normal.
“What was what?” She brushed a stray strand of blood covered blonde hair out of her face and frowned, licking the blood off her fingers. She caught him staring at her and stopped. “What?!”
“You realize that you’re covered in blood, licking it off your fingers, and seem completely in your element. What’s the fucking deal?”
Chloe smiled and walked towards Spencer, laughing as he back away from her and fell against one of the downed trolls. She put a leg on either side of his body and fell to her knees, essentially straddling him. She sniffed above his face, smelling the blood just under the surface. She moved her hand along his body, smelling the blood move from his neck to his crotch and smiled. “I am in my element.”
She slipped off him, pulling him up with one hand. Walking away from the group of dead trolls, she turned to make sure he was behind her once before moving faster through the rumble around them. She stopped as she felt his hand on her arm, pulling her toward him. She was staring into his eyes, knowing that hers were still a solid green, and frowned a question at him.
“What is wrong with you, Chloe?”
“Nothing, Spencer. There are only two ways to kill a troll. The first one would have killed you as well. I had to use the vampire in me to kill them. Do you have a problem with me being half vampire?”
“No, I just … You seem to enjoy it a little more than you should have.”
Chloe stopped and looked at him, tilting her head to the side. Her eyes faded back to normal, even as she licked the blood off her lips. She shrugged and jumped over a pile of debris, heading to the car. “Maybe I did enjoy it. It’s who I am. Why should it matter? I’m not ashamed of myself.”
“Maybe it’s because I’m ashamed of myself.” Chloe frowned as she heard the words whispered from Spencer’s mouth, again curious as to what was wrong with him. She kept walking though, unwilling to destroy the relationship they seemed to be developing.
They made it to the car with little incident, and she started to strip out of her clothes, pulling a fresh pair out of a bag in the backseat. She could feel his eyes on her naked body as she slipped the fresh clothes on, but chose to ignore it. If he really wanted to look, she’d let him. It wasn’t like they were ever going to be intimate again.
She crawled into the car in the driver’s seat beside him and took off down the road, heading back toward Bryar Enterprises. She sped all the way and was pleasantly shocked when the police started to escort them back to the building.
When they pulled into the parking garage, they were bombarded by concerned people, especially seeing Chloe’s blood stained hair. She shrugged them all off and opened the trunk, showing them all Frank’s body. “I want him taken somewhere until we can bury him.”
“That will be arranged, Chloe.” Bill gestured to the body and a entourage of people came and carried Frank, as a hero and as a king, into the building to find a place to store his body until they could bury him beside those he loved so much. “Are you alright, Chloe?”
Jumping as Bill addressed her, Chloe shook her head, making her way to the elevators. “I just need to get a shower and some food.”
“But the blood in your hair?”
“It’s troll blood.” Spencer spoke up before Chloe could even think of an explanation. At the look on Bill’s face, he continued, all the while with his eyes on her. “I was surrounded and she attacked them, saving me.” It wasn’t so much as ‘she drank them dry’ more of a ‘she saved my ass by killing them in bloody ways’.
At that was that for the moment. Spencer and Bill rode the elevator up with Chloe, but they all headed in different directions as soon as they were on the fortieth floor. Bill went to oversea the storage of Frank’s body, as well as telling Nia and Alex about it. Spencer went to the R&D library, more than likely to research Chloe’s condition. And Chloe headed straight to the apartment, hopping into the shower as soon as she could.
It wasn’t until the water was running and the radio was turned on as loud as she could stand it that Chloe let the true realization of Frank’s death, the death of her humanity, and the lost respect of Spencer, whom she was starting to like, get to her. She slid down the wet walls of the shower and cried as she watched the blood swirl down the drain. If only water was the only thing that could wait away her sins.
