*Jade’s POV*
When I awoke, Gerard was still with me. His cool skin made the warmth under the covers feel even warmer. I pressed my ear to his chest, even though I knew I would hear nothing. The silence was strangely comforting, and as I drifted back to sleep, I felt two strong arms give me a squeeze. I opened my eyes and looked over my shoulder at Gerard. He was watching me through half-opened eyes, a small smile gracing his lips.
“What are you smiling at?” I asked, a smile creeping unbidden across my face.
“You. You’re beautiful.” He answered, giving my hips a small squeeze. I stared at him, in all his glory. He was pretty beautiful himself. “What? You don’t believe me? Look in a mirror.”
“You should do the same.”
“Ladies first.” He smirked, making me laugh. His smirk widened to a heart-stopping smile. “Are you hungry?” he asked, still smiling like an angel.
“No…but I think I’m ready to start meeting people.” I stretched and curled into his side, not wanting to leave the peace I felt between him and the bed.
“My friends have been dying to meet you. Hold on a second.” Gerard jumped up and walked to the other side of the room. As he leaned out the door, I studied his figure. His shoulders were broad, leading down to large, powerful biceps. His forearms were smooth, disguising the muscles beneath. I wondered how his hands would feel on my skin. “Hey guys, come here!” he yelled. In a second, there were four men standing in the room. They smiled when they noticed me.
“Jade, this is my younger brother, Michael.” My eyes looked Michael over. His hair was honey-colored, his skin was also unnaturally pale. He had the same eyes as Gerard. His body, unlike Gerard’s, was thin and lanky, like the cross beam of my loom, as if too strong a wind might blow him away. He was very attractive, but he didn’t compare to Gerard.
“Hi.” He said shyly.
“Hi.” I answered, unsure of myself.
“This is Bob.” Gerard’s voice came to my rescue. I wonder if he knew how awkward I felt? I shrugged off my anxiety and with a determined air; I appraised Bob. He has heavily built, a bit plump, like a ripe blueberry, with muscle. His eyes reminded me of a day in my long-forgotten childhood, a day in a harsh winter when the gray clouds went on vacation and the blue sky returned. His hair was unlike any I’ve ever seen, equal in color to the sun, or wheat swaying in the summer breeze. For some reason, I felt drawn to him, as if I’ve known him for many years. I was put in mind of a child’s comforting toy.
“It’s good to see you’re awake; we’ve been wanting to meet you ever since you got here.” He said with a smile. I liked him already.
“Sorry I kept you waiting.” I laughed, feeling more at ease.
“It was worth it. You’re everything Gerard said.” Bob had a kind heart; it burned through his eyes.
“Oh? And what was that?” I asked, looking at Gerard. He shrugged, trying to hide the reddening of his cheeks.
“He’s in love with you.” One of them blurted out.
“Frank!” Gerard accosted him; I smiled at the look of shock on his face. Could it be true that Gerard was in love with me?
“What, it’s true!” Frank protested. He turned to me for support. “Isn’t it?”
“I wish I knew.” I groaned, wishing they would stop bickering. Frank laughed, an odd high-pitched giggle.
“I like her, she’s funny!” Frank said cheerily, getting a laugh from everyone. Frank was by far the shortest one of the group, with midnight black hair and eyes almost the color of soot. He was lean, but muscular and very attractive. His pale skin created a striking contrast to his eyes and hair.
“And this is Ray.” Instantly, I knew I would always love Ray. He just had that look to him, like a child that was so cute you just wanted to squeeze them ‘til they popped. He was lean and muscular like Frank, but he was a bit stockier. He had full pouty lips, and eyes the color of ground cinnamon. His hair was unusual, upon first seeing it, I had the fleeting feeling that I was looking at a bramble bush atop someone’s head. I had to resist the urge to laugh until I cried. It just looked so…exotic, shall I say. As strange as it was, it suited him and nothing else would ever look right. The pale skin added an interesting clash, just so that it caught your eye, like a colorful splash on a painting.
“What are your guys’ plans for today?” Ray asked.
“Gerard said he would show me around.” I explained.
“You should get started then; there’s lots to see.” Bob laughed.
“I still have to take her to see Asani.” Gerard added in, grinning at Ray as he blushed. “Are you ready to go now?” he looked over at me.
“Yeah. Who’s Asani?” I asked. Ray smiled sweetly, and his eyes glazed with love.
“My cousin, and Ray’s mate.” Gerard explained, scooping me out of the bed and into his powerful arms. My mind went blank when he touched me and I resisted the urge to snuggle into his chest. He set me down outside the door and wrapping an arm around my waist, led me down the hall, which led to what seemed a thousand others. I was lost and I’d barely moved.
The guys said farewell and walked away in a pack, turning to the right down a hall carved out of the ground. The architecture amazed me. How did they build all this? Everything is made of earth and wood and stone. Astounding. In my marveling, I didn’t realize we’d made it to the seamstress’ home. Her home was made of gray stone, giving the appearance of poverty. It was not much different from the homes in the village near my home.
Gerard knocked on the door, announcing our presence. The door opened after a moment’s pause, revealing a beautiful woman in a deep red dress and shawl.
“Gerard! What a lovely surprise! What brings you here today?” she asked. Gerard gently pulled me in front of him, showing me off like a peacock in mating season displays his tail.
“Asani, this is Jade. She’s in need of new clothes.” He explained.
“Of course, come in!” she said warmly. We stood in her living room while she gathered some supplies. Her home was very warm and inviting, much like herself. It was decorated tastefully, in a mild beige with dark blue accents. The house breathed comfort. Upon her return, Asani dragged me into a separate room and placed me behind a velvet curtain, pulling it closed after her, and surrounding us with light blue velvet. With a numbered rope, she measured my shoulders, bust, waist, and thighs. She also measured my leg and arm length, chatting easily the whole time. As she took my measurements, I studied her form. She was tall and slender, with slanted eyes that reminded me of an Asian spice trader who had visited our village last harvest. Her hair was dark as soot, tied up in a twisted bun, and her eyes were darker than ground cinnamon. She looked as if she was made for Ray.
“Gerard told me that you are Ray’s mate?” I asked, trying to be conversational.
“That’s correct, why do you ask?” she smiled at Ray’s mention.
“What exactly is a mate?” I blushed, realizing I must sound like a buffoon.
“It’s a lot like what humans call a husband or wife, except we’re equals. I understand that men are the dominant sex of humans?” Asani queried.
“That’s true. They decide everything. What we eat, where we live, who we marry.” I said miserably.
“That’s tragic. We pick our own mates, and it must be mutual to be official. The men pick a woman, but we get the final say. It’s fair that way. No one wants to spend eternity stuck with someone they don’t love.”
“That would be terrible. How long have you and Ray been…um…is married the right word?” I blushed; I felt so foolish!
“I suppose it is. We’ve been mates for about…oh five hundred years.” Asani said simply.
“Wow. Um…how old are you; if I may ask?”
“Of course you may. I myself am five hundred and twenty-three. Ray is five hundred and twenty-seven, as is Gerard.”
“Five hundred and twenty-seven?” I squeaked. I’d never thought about how old Gerard might be.
“Yes, that’s correct. How old are you?” Asani asked.
“I’m approaching my twentieth year.”
“Goodness! You’re still a child! This is a predicament. It seems odd, doesn’t it?” Asani placed a caring hand on my shoulder. I nodded; it was indeed odd that I was developing feelings for someone so much older than myself. But his age doesn’t show, I tried to reason with myself. He only looks twenty-seven. The extra five hundred years don’t count.
“He’s a wonderful choice, Jade. No one will ever be as good; at least not to you.” Asani consoled as she disappeared on the other side of the curtain. “I’ll be right back, I’m fetching you some material.” As her footsteps faded, I thought about my feelings for Gerard. I didn’t exactly love him yet, but he intrigued me. I knew that what Asani had said was true; I’d never find another man like him. No other man was good enough, never would be. Gerard was my only chance for true love. So far he was everything I’d dreamed. How long would that last? Suppose he ends up not being the man of my dreams? What will I do then? Leave him for someone else? Another vampire? I felt so confused that I let out a strangled sob. Asani chose that moment to reappear.
“Don’t fret, my dear. I promise you; Gerard is the man you’ve been dreaming of.” She whispered into my ear as she hugged me tightly. “Don’t be afraid to let your heart lead.”
“How did you…are you…reading my mind?” I asked. Asani chuckled.
“No dear, it’s written all over your face. You look so frightened.” Asani cupped my face in her hands, softly wiping away the tears I didn’t remember shedding. “Gerard is perfect for you; you are perfect for him. He will always love you and protect you with every fiber of his being.”
“How do you know?” I whispered.
“Gerard is very easy to read. Now, try this on. I’ve a feeling you’ll look radiant in it.” Asani handed me a lightweight dress that shimmered at my touch. It felt sleek and smooth under my fingertips. I lifted my arms as Asani gently pulled the dress down my body, adjusting and rustling the fabric into place around my hips, chest and straightening the strap behind my neck. She pulled aside a curtain of fabric and revealed a full-length mirror. The dress was scandalously perfect, almost unreal. It hugged my body so well I could see every one of my curves. The material is something Asani called chiffon. It reminded me of silk. It was light blue in color, with vivid red streaks around my waist, and yellow and tan ocean prints strewn across the fabric. The dress was without sleeves, a thin strap behind my neck linked together just below my neck to a brooch, bejeweled with sapphires, to form a Y. The Y connected to another brooch beset with glittering topaz leveled with my cleavage. Beneath my breasts, a vertical pattern of topaz jewels decorated my torso. The bottom half of the dress caressed my thighs gracefully, the rest swung gaily to the floor.
“Oh my god! It’s…amazing!” I stammered. I’d never seen anything so beautiful in my life!
“I just knew you’d have the body for it. Gerard very well may faint when he sees you.” Asani smiled deviously. She produced a comb for my hair and managed to tame it back into a small bun. She left the ends of my hair to fan out around my head, much like a peacock’s tail in mating season. Asani said I looked beautiful. I felt foolish. After supplying me with shoes, jewelry and makeup, she grabbed me by the hand and pulled me out of the velvet dressing room.
“Asani, wait!” I protested. Too late. With a flourish, Asani presented me to Gerard while I blushed and tried to hide. Asani yanked me into view and nudged me toward Gerard; throwing me off balance in the heels she’d lent me. Gerard caught me around the waist and held me back to appraise me.
“Beautiful as always, Asani. How much is it?” he asked, rummaging through his pockets.
“For this girl, free. The only payment I ask is a smile and gossip about you.” Asani crossed her arms. “Enjoy yourselves! It's a beautiful night to fall in love!” She said, bidding us farewell.
“We will. Thank you, Asani.” Gerard said. Did I see the faintest hint of a smile?
“Bye Asani, thank you!” I called as we left to explore what I hoped would be my new home.
