When Zac Met Jack
Vanessa was now six and a half months pregnant. It was Zac’s and her wedding day. She knew something had gone on between Zac and Nikki; she had no idea what, only that it had not been good. Nikki had moved to London and was dating Daniel Radcliffe.
On top of that, she had gone online and had accidentally come across a newspaper cutting of Nikki walking down a street in London, pushing a pram, which obviously held a baby. Daniel had been walking beside her.
The paper had said a source had confirmed that the child in the pram was in fact Nikki’s two-week-old son. That was the only information Nikki would give, besides revealing the baby was a boy called Jack. That Daniel was not the father, but they were dating and Daniel was fine with it.
Nikki had not allowed any pictures of her son taken, claiming she did not want him in the public eye. She stated if anyone went against her wishes, then she would make them regret it.
Vanessa noticed Zac had seemed withdrawn ever since she had shown him the article, wishing above all else she had not in the first place. He seemed affected by it for some reason. On top of that, Nikki had refused directly to attend the wedding.
Vanessa knew Zac cared for the plus size woman very much. The fact she had refused to attend his wedding had seriously crushed him. She was deeply worried about him. She just hoped he brightened up for their wedding ceremony.
Meanwhile Zac had just finished getting ready for the ceremony. He stood in front of a mirror and stared at his reflection. The usual spark of laughter usually found in his bright blue eyes extinguished the moment he saw the article and the photo of Nikki, Radcliffe, and her baby son, Jack.
Zac was still stunned over the fact Nikki was a mother. He wondered who the father was, could it be him, as he did not remember them using any protection at the time. On the other hand, Nikki could have been with anyone and he would not have known, not after what he had done to her.
He felt sick with self-disgust, he was a coward. He even told Elijah as much, after the dark skinned man had belted him in the eye, giving him a shiner. Zac knew he had deserved it and a lot worse. Elijah had gone easy on him in his opinion.
That was another thing, which bothered Zac. Elijah, Amanda nor Brittany would talk to him, which meant naturally they would not be attending his wedding, as Nikki was not. On top of that, the rest of the Hairspray cast were not attending, they were all working away on their own projects.
What hurt most of all, was the fact Nikki was refusing to attend his wedding, not that he could blame her. It had not even been his idea, but Vanessa’s instead. Then there was the message Nikki had asked her parents to deliver to him.
They had told him over the phone word for word, of what Nikki had said. Carl explained he and the rest of his family were sorry, but they would not be attending the wedding, as they did not feel it to be right, considering the circumstances.
Zac clenched and unclenched his fists, as he bit back a sob, as hot tears streamed down his cheeks. His whole body shook with the force of his suppressed sobs of anguish. The saying you do not know what you have until it has gone, had never rang truer to Zac then it did at that moment.
It took Nikki moving to London and getting with Radcliffe and of course Nikki parents delivering her message to him, for him to realise he was in love, but not with the woman he was about to marry. No, he was in love with Nikki, he never realised until it was too late and Nikki was well and truly out of his reach. Hell she did not want anything to do with him. It seemed she had had someone else’s baby.
He had never regretted writing a note more so then he did the one he left on Nikki’s bedside table. He had said in the note that he loved her, but was in love with Vanessa. That he thought it was a mistake and that they should not see each other.
He realised too late, that in his stupidity, he had chosen the wrong woman that his one night with Nikki had not been a mistake, but the best night of his life. All he had accomplished was to lose the one person he loved and adored more than living life itself. He had also shattered his own heart in the process.
He also realised with a startling bitterness, as he bent over a table, doubled in the sheer magnitude of his grief, as he tried to stifle the sound of his heartbroken sobs, he had to marry Vanessa, felt like it was his duty. He owed it to her, having after all gotten her pregnant. He had to do the right thing and marry her, no matter how much it was going to destroy him.
Zac, so caught up in his grief, that he did not hear his parents knock on the door of the room in the church he had been using to get ready in, before entering. Starla and David froze on the spot in horror, at the heart breaking sight that met them.
Starla and David knew all about Jack, even what Zac had done, the note included. Starla had never been so disappointed in her boy then she had been when Nikki had told her everything.
She was horrified, that her son had taken this women’s virginity, then left the next morning before she woke. Only leaving a note behind, saying how it was a mistake, he was in love with Vanessa and planned to ask her to marry him, that he didn’t think they should see each other anymore.”
David was thrilled over the fact he had a grandson, but heartbroken how he had come to be and the fact he and his mother lived in England. He had never wanted to tan his son’s hind, more so, then when he had found out what Zac had gone and done. He figured he had raised his son to behaviour and use sight better conduct than that.
They had seen close up pictures of Jack. Starla had melted and had been in tears. Jack looked just like her Zac when he had only been a couple of weeks old. She remembered how Zac had seen one of the baby pictures Starla was using as a screen saver on the family PC.
She had told Zac when he asked, that the baby was he at two weeks old. It was easy to believe, as Jack could have literately been Zac’s twin at that age. However, she thought she saw something in her son’s eyes, which had told her he had not quite believed her.
Only she, David and Dylan knew otherwise. Vanessa had cooed at the picture when she had seen it. David and seen something in his son’s eyes, as if he almost did not believe that it was him on that screen. He had not said anything, even though there had been a look of suspicion in his eyes.
Starla quickly went over to her son and turned him around. Her heart broke at the heartbroken and desperate expression on her son’s face. She gathered him in her arms, as he sobbed. The sound was awful; it even managed to bring tears to the eyes of the usually unmoved David Efron.
David walked up to his son and wife, placed a hand on his son’s shoulder, and asked, “What happened?” Zac choked out between sobs, “I was wrong, I love Vanessa but I’m not in love with her, I’m in love with Nikki.”
His parents gasped, as he continued, “I’m going to marry Vanessa, because I have to. I got her pregnant and I was stupid enough to hurt Nikki. I did this to myself. Now I am going to stick it out, I deserve it. I’ll marry her and help bring up the babies when their born, but I’ll never be in love with her.”
He added, “I’ll do this and when the priest asks if anyone has any objects to the marriage, I don’t want either one of you to protest it. Let it happen, I deserve this, even though it is likely to destroy me.”
Starla and David opened their mouths to protest, but Zac looked up at both of them, there was wild and desperate look in his blue tear drenched eyes, which terrified his parents to their very core. “Promise me please, damn it promise me, that you won’t protest. I have to do this, I have to.”
Starla nodded reluctantly, as tears streamed down her face. David on the other hand looked ready to protest again. Zac pleaded, “Please dad, if I never ever ask you for anything again, do this for your grandchildren that Vanessa is currently carrying. They are the innocent party here and never asked to be brought into this fucked up world.”
David reluctantly nodded and said, “Fine, I’ll go along with it, but I don’t like it one little bit, just you know that. I am only agreeing to this charade for the sake of those children she is carrying.” He added, “In that case, you better clean your face and get out there. You are needed the ceremony is due to start in ten minutes. Your brother is waiting for you.”
Dylan was going to be Zac’s best man. Zac would have preferred Elijah, but obviously, that was not an option. Zac nodded and left the comfort of his mother’s arms, very reluctantly and headed for the washroom that was on the other side of the wall.
Fifteen minutes later found Zac waiting at the end of the altar, with his brother, as Vanessa came down the aisle on her father’s arm. She looked lovely, dressed in a designer cream coloured gown. Her hair pinned up in ringlets with little yellow roses. She carried a bouquet of yellow and white roses.
Her bridesmaids were Monique and Olesya, while her maid of honour was Ashley. The male HSM cast members were the ushers. Vanessa’s six year-old cousin he was a pageboy and was carrying a small pillow with two fake platinum wedding bands on it. Naturally, Dylan had the genuine articles.
Zac took a deep breath. No matter how beautiful Vanessa looked, she was not Nikki. Zac felt sick to his stomach. However, he knew he had to do this. He thought of what his twin sons or daughters were going to look like and that helped him to smile and make it look like he was smiling at Vanessa.
The ceremony progressed perfectly. When the priest asked if anyone knew why they should not be married, Zac was on pins, hopping his parents did not go back on their promise to him. They did not. He had no idea whether to be thankful for that, or to start sobbing all over again.
They exchanged vows and Zac only hesitated for a brief moment before saying, I will. Vanessa had not hesitated for a single second. As soon as they finished exchanging rings, it was then that Zac felt like his heart had shattered, before mending and shattering all over again, when the priest announced, “I now pronounce you husband and wife you may kiss your bride.”
At that moment in time, Zac did not want to be kissing Vanessa, but he needed to, to keep up appearances. He took a deep breath and pictured Nikki, her smiling and laughing face. It was the only way Zac was able to make the kiss look convincing.
When they pulled back, they turned to face their friends and family, as the priest announced, “It is my pleasure to introduce to you, Mr. Zachary David Alexander Efron and Mrs. Vanessa Anne Hudgens-Efron.”
Zac’s mind screamed at him, that the priest should have been announcing the name Nicole Margaret Blonsky-Efron. However, that would not happen now, he had ruined that. He sighed and placed a plastic smile on his face, which he hoped no one could see thought, as everyone clapped and cheered.
Of course, his parents only joined in half-heartedly and they did see though his smile. They were the only ones who knew how deceiving the current situation was. Their son was good as trapped in a loveless marriage.
Oh, they did not doubt that Vanessa and Zac loved each other, but there was a huge contrast to their love. Zac Loved Vanessa, but Vanessa was in love with Zac. The only mutual love that would exist in that marriage would be the love both Zac and Vanessa would share for their children.
