Spencer Smith was dead. He had died a year ago in a field trying to save his sister and the love of his life. He had lost his love, but his sister was always going to be a constant. These were things he knew of as he walked into the large building that served as the headquarters for Bryar Enterprises.
He didn’t even bother checking it at the front desk, heading straight to the main elevators. He took the elevators to the floor where the President’s office had always been and headed past people he had never seen before and stopped in the open doorway of the President’s office.
He couldn’t keep the smile off his face as he saw Rick Smith sitting behind the desk, going over paperwork. Bill and Alex seemed to be sitting in a far corner with their stacks of paperwork, but Spencer’s eyes were only for his father.
“Dad.” His voice was soft, slightly frightened as he spoke. He was almost afraid of the reaction his father would have to him.
Rick looked up without thinking about it and dropped the papers he was holding, sending another stack flying to the floor as he stood abruptly from his chair. “Spencer?”
Bill and Alex’s attention turned to Rick at that moment and they too stood quickly. “Oh my Calvin Klein’s! Spencer! You were dead.” Bill’s reaction, as always, was priceless.
“I was dead, but demons only go to Hell when they die. There are ways to escape Hell.” He turned to Alex and frowned. “I met your grandfather, be glad you haven’t.”
Alex frowned deeper than Spencer had. “My grandfather? Dad’s dad?”
“Yes. He’s the head torturer in Hell. And he knows his stuff. I could show you scars from some of the things he did to me.”
Spencer felt the hand on his arm and turned his attention back to his father with a smile. He returned the hug his father gave him and then pulled back. “Where’s Naida and Jon? I want to see them. They were two of the main reasons I escaped.”
Bill, Alex, and Rick exchanged a look that caused Spencer unease before Rick finally answered. “Um, Jon was killed about a month ago. Naida is here, but she’s insane. She lost Jon and her infant son on the same night. She’s been tortured to her breaking point more than once over the last year. I don’t think you should see her, Spencer.”
Spencer let it all sink in before he shook his head. “No. I will see her. Maybe I can help her come back into her self or something. Please, Dad?”
Rick sighed and started toward the elevator, talking over his shoulder. “Come on, but don’t say I didn’t warn you, son.”
Spencer followed Rick into the elevators and down into the containment cells where they put potentially dangerous creatures. They came around the corner and Spencer spotted Naida.
He ran to the glass of her cell and looked in at her. Except for the wild hair and slightly ripped dress, she looked as he had left her a year ago. “Nay! Can you hear me?”
Naida jumped as if she had been bitten and turned to look at Spencer through the glass. “Oh course I can hear you. I can always here the things of my imagination coming back to haunt me with the horrors of my past. Why wouldn’t I hear you?” She noticed Rick and gestured to him. “And I see you brought the great Father. All hail the great Father!” She dropped to her knees and bowed low to Rick as if he were a god.
She came back up and went back to the cot on the far side of the room, rocking back and forth as Spencer continued to call to her. “Nay! I’m not part of your imagination. I’m here. I came back for you.”
“Bastard! Liar! Don’t torment me like this! I don’t want to talk to you anymore! Motherfucker! I hate you! You left me! Get away from me!” She flew at the glass and hit it hard, causing it shake. She fell onto the ground and got back, continuing to yell curses at him. “I would not have left Bryar Enterprises if you had lived. I would not have gone into the situations I got into had you accepted me. I would not have used my powers to kill those assholes who took my son, my baby. ALL YOUR FAULT!”
The glass shattered into pieces and she gasped. “No, no, no. Spencer, I’m sorry. Help me.” A piece of glass from the ceiling fell and cut a long bloody line down her right side, but she barely felt it as she fell to the ground, unconscious.
Spencer stood amongst the broken glass and stared at the unmoving body of his older sister, unable to talk. “That glass was shattered proof, Spencer. Do you see now what I was talking about? She’s dangerous. We have to move her to another cell. One full of water so she can at least be comfortable.”
He went to a phone on the wall and explained the situation, having two men come into the room to take her limp body to another room. Spencer remained standing there. He walked to her blood splattered on the floor and dipped his finger into it, licking it clean. “She’s not all lost, Dad. She apologized and asked for help.”
“All ravings of a lunatic, Spencer, she’s gone.”
“I won’t believe that.” Spencer stood and stared down at the blood on the floor, feeling it run through him. It wasn’t in her blood. She really was insane, but there had to be someway to bring her back to him.
“I don’t believe it either, Spence.” Chloe stepped into the shards of glass and smiled at her old flame. “It’s good to see you alive and well.”
“And you as well, Chloe. I hear that congratulations are in order. Married to Brendon with a baby girl. You’ve done well for yourself. Wish I could say the same for my life.”
“You’re no longer in Hell, are you, Spence?” Chloe smiled and walked over to him, hugging him tight. “It’s good to have you back. Really it is. We were lacking on finding a godfather for little Ryan.”
“You want me to be the godfather?”
“Why wouldn’t we, Spencer? You’re one of the people we know would take good care of her.” Brendon walked around the corner and looked around at the broken glass. “I guess Naida did it again.”
“Yes, she did.” Spencer looked between the two as Chloe took Brendon’s hand and felt no wash of jealousy, no remorse, only happiness. “I would love to be Ryan’s godfather.”
“Good.” Chloe smiled and shook her head as the smile disappeared. “We should get upstairs. I have a few other things to take care of people we can get the Naida thing solved.”
“I have to get back to Ryan.” Brendon stopped at the door and smiled at Spencer. “Care to come with me and meet your goddaughter?”
Spencer smiled at Brendon and nodded. “I would love to, Brendon.” He glanced back at the blood on the floor before heading back upstairs. He may not be able to help his sister right now, but he had a little girl upstairs waiting to meet her godfather.

‘He left you, Naida. He’s not here to help you. He’s here to get your hopes up and then leave you again.’
“No, no, Spencer would never do that to me. He didn’t do that the first time.” Naida sat in the far corner of the water filled tank she had been given and went over the same arguments she had had with herself since she had seen Spencer a little over an hour ago. She had been cruel to him, acting as she had been taught to act by her oppressors.
She shook her head as the other voice continued. ‘What has he ever done to you but provide you with cruelty and fear? He never loved you. He only saw you as a monster. He never saw the monster in himself. He just saw it in you.’
“He sees it now. I know he does. I saw it today. I saw it.”
‘Why don’t you get out of this tank and go and see for yourself? He’ll show you that he hasn’t accepted the demon in himself.’
Naida hesitated. “I might get into trouble for leaving the tank.”
‘Wouldn’t it be worth it to know whether Spencer truly loves you or not?’
“I guess you’re right.” Naida put a palm against the glass and it burst. She fell out and the tank was fixed behind her. She crawled away from the water near a vent and let it dry her tail so she could walk around.
Standing, she found her way out of the containment area, aiming for wherever Spencer could be. Spencer did love her. She would prove the voice wrong.
