Things around the Fletcher house were mildly boring over the next two weeks. Plans were made for the upcoming wedding, but things were otherwise unchanged. Ryland visited daily, occasionally bringing his friend, Nathaniel Novarro, with him to keep Lily company while Ryland and Elizabeth whispered to one another.
“They appear to be quite a perfect match,” Nathaniel commented as he and Lily sat talking on one of those occasions.
“Perfect, yes. However it becomes quite tiresome to sit here each day and listen to their conversations,” Lily replied. “It is easier when Mr. Blackinton brings a friend with whom I can talk. Otherwise I feel like a chaperone.” Nathaniel couldn’t help but laugh a little at her comment.
“Then I shall have to make sure to continue coming with Mr. Blackinton, at least until his other friend returns from Derbyshire. No one as agreeable as yourself should be subjected to such torture,” he said, smiling slightly.
“I commend you for your mercenary actions, Mr. Novarro. I am sure that they will be most welcome over the next few days. From what I have been told, Mr. Saporta and his cousin, Mr. Suarez, should be arriving any day now,” Lily explained.
“So my job as your savior from boredom shall only last a few days, I suppose,” Nathaniel replied.
“Yes, I suppose. But that does not mean that your visits must stop, Mr. Novarro. I am sure that your visits would be more than welcome even after their return,” Lily replied with a smile.
“I would sincerely hope that that would be the case, but I am not sure that Mr. Saporta would appreciate my visits to your home at this point,” he told her. She raised an eyebrow at the comment.
“I assure you, Mr. Novarro, that Mr. Saporta has no reason to disapprove of any gentlemen’s visits to this house. He would really have no say in the matter, anyway,” Lily replied, a bit upset that people obviously believed that there was more going on than just a close friendship between herself and Gabriel.
“I would have thought that Mr. Saporta’s opinion would matter to you, considering what is being said,” he replied.
“We are not betrothed, nor will we be any time soon. He is not yet prepared to take a wife, nor do I think that I would say yes at present. We have certainly not been acquainted long enough to even be thinking of such a matter,” Lily replied. At that moment, she noticed that Ryland was beginning to prepare to leave. “I see that Mr. Blackinton is preparing to bid my sister farewell.”
“Unfortunately, that means that I must go as well. Until tomorrow, then?” Nathaniel asked, gently taking Lily’s hand and kissing it after he spoke.
“Until then, Mr. Novarro,” Lily replied, gently nodding to him as Ryland and Elizabeth both stood to say their goodbyes. Nathaniel and Lily followed suit, saying their final goodbyes before the gentlemen left the room.

“You have been preoccupied this entire trip, Gabriel. We barely spoke the entire way back to London, and I am curious as to why,” Alexandro Suarez said, turning to his cousin as he spoke.
“It is impossible to explain, Alexandro. You will have to come meet the young ladies who have captured my heart,” Gabriel replied.
“Ladies, as in plural? There is more than one?” Alexandro replied, confused.
“Yes. It is impossible to choose, Alexandro. They are both beautiful, intelligent… in short, everything I could hope for in a wife. But I must choose between the two, and I am hopelessly lost as to how to make such a decision,” Gabriel replied.
“They know about your family, I assume.”
“Miss Fletcher does. I have not yet told Miss Carter, although I am sure she would understand my reason for keeping it so quiet and would not mind the fact,” Gabriel replied.
“You might overestimate her affection for you, Gabriel. Las mujeres can be very fickle… their love can be taken away over the most minor of infractions. You should remember that,” Alexandro told him.
“You forget that I have learned that lesson well already. Miss Thomas made sure to teach me that one quite well when she chose to accept her cousin’s offer of marriage after she refused my own. Although I believe that it was more an issue of money, rather than love, that changed her mind against me,” Gabriel replied. He stalked across the room to look out the window. Ryland had invited Alexandro to stay with them as well after his visit to Derbyshire, and the two were sitting in the room Gabriel had been using for his entire stay in London.
“She was a foolish girl, Gabriel. She wanted a husband with ready money and nothing more, and you should be grateful that she spared you from her spending habits. She would have ruined you,” Alexandro pointed out. “You will have to make a decision soon, Gabriel. Your father shall not last much longer. He is preparing to leave the business and allow you to take over his part, but he wishes for you to take a wife before he does so.” Gabriel turned to face him again at these words.
“I suppose that he asked you to pass that message on to me. Thought it would sound better coming from someone closer to my own age?” Gabriel asked.
“We have always been close, Gabriel. Your father thought that you would rather hear the news from a friend, instead of a man that you have rarely been allowed to know outside of your lessons in running the family business,” Alexandro explained. Gabriel nodded.
“Then I suppose that I should inform Miss Carter of my true identity soon, so that I might gauge the trueness of her love for me,” Gabriel replied. He took a deep breath. “Your mother wishes for you to look for a wife while you are in London, does she not?”
“Those were my instructions. I believe that she wrote a letter to you, with the instructions that you should introduce me to any proper young ladies you might know,” Alexandro said, smirking. Gabriel raised an eyebrow and smiled back at his cousin.
“Your mother did believe that I might know some young ladies she would approve of. Although I do not know how she believed that I might know any, considering my parents’ disdain for society outside of their Jewish friends,” Gabriel replied, smiling. “Do not worry too much, though Alexandro. Ryland has introduced me to many young ladies that would be perfect for your mother’s rules.”
“I couldn’t care less about my mother’s rules for whom I marry. When I fall in love, then I shall marry the woman that has stolen my heart. I could not settle for any less, and anyone that my mother would approve of would more than likely not be capable of capturing my heart,” Alexandro said.
“What makes you say that? Your mother’s wishes could still provide you with a handsome and intelligent young woman,” Gabriel said.
“Mother does not approve of women being overly educated. She thinks it makes them too independent and strong-willed, something unbecoming of a wealthy businessman’s wife,” Alexandro replied. “She was not educated herself, beyond the skills required to maintain a household and find a good husband. She has always believed that anything beyond those skills is frivolous and only leads to chaos in the natural order of society.”
“Your mother’s views on educating women are extremely old-fashioned, I must say. An educated woman makes for an excellent conversation. An uneducated woman has little to talk about other than gossip, and generally has no opinions that can be viewed as anything more than a rote memorization of what has been told to her,” Gabriel replied. “Do not worry, cousin. I will be sure to introduce you to the proper sort of women - the kind a man who is looking for more than a pretty face could actually fall in love with.”
