Again Frank and Gerard outvoted me, this time when it came to dinner. I wanted Chinese, but they dragged me to Pizza Hut. It was actually alright, and Gerard’s reasoning was the best. I didn’t understand most of it, but Frank nodded franticly as Gerard spoke and I knew I had lost my case.
“Gerard, please don’t do that.” I said softly, hoping not to upset him.
He had started sorting the things on our table. The napkins, the cartons which the pizza’s came in, and of course everything else.
“Mikey.” Gerard simply said, and I sighed. I knew there was no stopping him now, once he’d started. I could try, but he would make a scene, and I didn’t want that.
Sometimes it makes me annoyed, how you can never ask Gerard to do anything. Of course I would never say that out loud, never. He’s my brother, I love him.
Frank’s POV.
Watching the Way brothers never got old. Everything about them fascinates and amuses me. The way Gerard sometimes deliberately did things to annoy Mikey, and the way Mikey knew exactly what to say to make Gerard smile.
“Gerard, please don’t do that.” Mikey said as Gerard started sorting the things on our table. Gerard didn’t look up as he answered, he just kept on what he was doing, and he did look quite funny. His forehead was wrinkled like he was thinking furiously, and he even had his tongue out to the side.
I couldn’t help but smile as Mikey sighed deeply. He gave me meaningful look but I didn’t return it. I knew Mikey thought Gerard was being difficult, but what harm was he really doing?
Of course I was wrong, Mikey knew exactly what could happen, and he wanted to prevent it. Suddenly the cups Gerard had stapled toppled over as he accidentally gave the table a knock with his elbow. Mikey reacted quickly and grabbed Gerard’s arms and told me to get up.
“We’re leaving, now!” He said and I got up quickly. The look on Gerard’s face almost scared me. I could tell Gerard was struggling to not get angry and throw things around. His eyes were clouded over and his breathing was rapid as Mikey pulled him into the parking lot.
Of course there Gerard couldn’t help himself anymore. He started crying violently, and all Mikey could do was to hold him as people stared.
I glared at the people walking by, but it didn’t really help. I guess in my heart I couldn’t blame them. There he was, a grown man, crying violently for no apparent reason.
It took ten minutes to get Gerard to get into the car so we could drive home. He got angry when Mikey wanted him to get in at first, but after promising Gerard we’d let him pick the movie we’d watch later he silently climbed in the back.
As I was about to get into the front, next to Mikey, Gerard shook his head violently.
“I get so lonely, please sit here.” He whispered, and I looked at Mikey with my eyebrows raised. He nodded, so I joined Gerard in the backseat.
Narrator's POV.
There’s a book called ‘What To Do In Awkward Situations’ written by Charles M. Green. No, there isn’t really. But if there was one, Frank would’ve wished in that moment that he could’ve read it. The car was silent, except for the breathing of the three people in it.
Mikey was busy making his way home through the rain, which had started falling rapidly, so he didn’t have time to talk. And Frank didn’t know what to say. He opened his mouth several times to speak, but no words came out.
And Gerard was currently busy with… well it’s hard to know, since all thoughts pass through Gerard’s brain at a rapid speed when he’s anxious. But we can imagine he wasn’t thinking anything too cheerful from the expression of sadness on his face.
Finally Frank gave up trying to think of something clever to say, and just stared out the window. Instead of thinking of the current situation he was in, Frank thought about his life. Or rather, his lack of one.
He thought about his mother, who had first told him he was a freak when he came out to her, then kicked him out when he had smoked pot. He didn’t blame her for the second thing, considering she had walked in on him while he was smoking it. Of course it didn’t help that he had been so surprised by her walking into his room without knocking that he had accidentally dropped the joint on the carpet, burning a hole in it.
Frank thought about how he wanted something more in life. Something more then getting high every weekend, and something more then walking around feeling sorry for himself because he couldn’t get laid.
Mostly everyone thought that Frank was a very happy boy, with no troubles at all. They thought that because of a) he was constantly smiling and b) that’s what he told everyone.
Frank was in fact not happy, he was far from it. His life had been hard and filled with sorrow for a long time. He just didn’t have anyone to tell. Mikey knew most of it, but he didn’t know how sad Frank really was.
When Frank was only 13 he had realized his eyes lingered on the boys around him in the showers after PE a little too long. Of course back then he didn’t really understand what it meant to be gay, but he knew he wasn’t like all the other guys. He didn’t care about tits or anything else that his friends talked about. He didn’t have any desire at all to experience his first kiss.
At first he thought it was simply because he didn’t want to kiss anyone, but when he turned 15 and found that he’d rather like to kiss his best friend, a small light somewhere in Frank’s mind clicked on.
He was gay.
He liked boys.
He wanted to kiss boys.
When he realised he was gay he freaked out at first, as most people would. He had been disgusted by himself, and he had continued denying it for a long time. A year later however, he stopped lying to himself. He would never like girls that way.
He told Mikey shortly after he had turned 17, and Mikey was the first person to find out. It took him nearly 45 minutes and many ‘Mikey…’ followed by things like ‘I have to go the bathroom’, ‘this program sucks’ and ‘I think Misfits are great’ before Mikey finally turned the TV off and told Frank to stop being weird and just tell him what was going on.
Frank did so, and Mikey didn’t say anything for a long time. Of course Frank thought he had made a mistake by telling Mikey, and sweat started producing like crazy all over his body. But after a few minutes Mikey smiled his famous toothed grin and said “Ew you want to do it with a boy!”.
Since Frank knew Mikey was just kidding he simply replied by throwing one of his socks in Mikey’s face, who stopped grinning and his face instead turned into one of horror…
Frank’s POV.
I snapped out of my thoughts of the past as Mikey suddenly exclaimed that we were home. I looked up and noticed that it was in fact so. I slowly got out of the car and followed the them up to the front door.
After a few minutes of quiet arguing between the brother’s Mikey finally handed the key to Gerard and he started working on the lock. It did take Gerard another minute to get the key in and to actually unlock the door, but the look of extreme happiness on his face when he heard the click was priceless.
Sometimes Gerard really looked so much like a child.
“We’re home.” Gerard shouted and Mikey giggled.
“Gee, no ones home silly.” He said and Gerard joined in the giggling.
“I forgot, Mikey.” Gerard said and Mikey patted his arm as we got our shoes off. After a few minutes I realised I had yet to say something, so I opened my mouth to speak, but I had no time to do so.
“I’m going to chose a movie now, and it’s going to be a good one, you make popcorn and I’d like some candy please.” Gerard said rapidly then he disappeared into the living room to pick a movie.
Mikey and I just laughed and walked into the kitchen together.
A/N: This was a bit different for me, but I thought it would be a fun way to get an insight into Frank's life.
