Chapter Five
For the next day or two, David couldn’t get the thought of Ami Kelley off his mind. Now that he had found her in his yearbook, he couldn’t help the gut feeling that told him that she was the one behind Cook’s abduction. He couldn’t even bring himself to mention that to David. He knew that Cook could tell that something was on his mind but Cook still knew David well enough to know when he wasn’t ready to talk about something. However, the older man was unnerved by the distancy that David was seemingly having ever since the day they had made love for the first time in four years. He still didn’t say anything to him about it though, just tried to make things better.
Finally, two days after they had made love, David knew he had to talk to someone about it so when Cook was taking a shower, he picked up his cell phone and dialed Jason’s number, hoping beyond hope that the one person who’d been so supportive of him since the moment he’d found out Cook was missing would have some advice for him.
“What’s up David?” Jason’s voice came on the line, already sounding concerned. David got a confused look on his face. He couldn’t understand how Jason always seemed to know when something was bothering him. Besides David himself, Jason was the only person who knew yet that Cook was back and alive. David had called him while Cook was still asleep the day they’d made love. “I know something is bugging you. You sounded rather out of it when you told me that Cook had come back out of the blue,” Jason confirmed and David momentarily looked down at the floor.
“Jason, remember how the day I told you about Cook’s return you said you thought I sounded out of it?”
“Yeah,” Jason replied, not really sure where this was headed.
“Well, you were right. I was out of it. Cook is in the shower right now so I thought I’d take the time to call you. I can’t live with the information that’s nagging at me right now without telling someone about it. I need an opinion.”
“I see. Go on,” Jason said. That was one thing David liked so much about talking to him. He never questioned him and let David talk before he really said much about anything in the way of questioning what was going on or what was worrying David.
“Well, before I called you, I found one of my high school yearbooks sitting on the nightstand by Emily’s side of the bed. It was the yearbook from the year I was on Idol.” He paused to give Jason a moment to acknowledge that he was still listening, even though David had no doubt that he was.
“Uh-huh,” came the voice from the other end of the line.
“I didn’t know why she’d been looking at it but that’s not the point. I decided to look through it and I came across a picture.”
“A picture?”
“Yes.”
“What kind of picture David?”
“It was a picture of a girl. A girl by the name of Ami Kelley.”
“Isn’t that the girl you were always trying to avoid when we were doing Idol?” Jason asked and David gulped. So he remembered the name. David had confided in Jason about his dilemma with the girl.
“Yes, it is. Anyway, Cook was telling me about what happened to him. He said he was captured by a girl one who he said didn’t want him to ever mention my name. According to Cook, it seemed to him that the girl was obsessed with me.”
“I think I know where this is going,” Jason said and David didn’t doubt that he did. “You saw that picture of her and just felt in your gut that she was the one behind the abduction, right?”
“Right. I don’t know what to do Jason,” David admitted. He paused and put his hand over the phone, eyes glancing up at the ceiling as he heard the shower go off. “Look, I have to go now, the shower just went off.”
“Don’t worry David, you’ll think of something,” Jason replied. “If you need me to, I’ll help you out when I get the chance.”
“Thanks Jason,” David said in a grateful voice. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“You’re welcome and alright. Call me if you need anything.”
“I will. Just remember to call me when Ramiele goes into labor. I want to meet that kid of yours,” he said, changing the subject for a moment.
“I know David, don’t worry. You’ve been saying the whole time you’ve known she’s pregnant that you want to be one of the first to meet the baby. Trust me, I won’t forget to call you.”
“Alright. Bye Jason.”
”Good-bye David.” There was a click as the other man hung up the phone and David shut his, sighing heavily as he dropped down on to the couch, resting his head against the back of it.
“Who were you talking to just now?” said a voice and David looked around to see Cook standing at the bottom of the stairs with nothing more than a towel wrapped around his waist. He had his head cocked to the side and was giving David a curious look. David simply smiled and walked over to him.
“Never you mind that now. Mmmmm…” he said as he wrapped his arms around Cook’s waist and began to kiss his neck. Cook didn’t protest. His arms went right around David’s waist in turn and he rested his chin on the younger man’s shoulder, relishing in the feel of David’s lips on his neck.
For several minutes, nothing was said as David continued to ravish Cook’s neck with his mouth, bringing his lips up to meet his earlobe a couple of times as well and nipping at the soft skin, trailing down to Cook’s collar bone and nipping there gently. Cook moaned and one of his hands flew up to the back of David’s head, pressing firmly on his lover’s head to get him to apply more pressure to the nips and kisses he was providing him with. He grasped David’s hair and tugged gently, causing David to moan against his skin.
David wasted no time removing the towel from around Cook’s was and he giggled lightly when Cook picked him up and carried him over to the couch. A smile was adorned on David’s face as he felt Cook gently lay him down. The naked man looked down on the younger more adorable man beneath him who was still fully clothed. He captured David’s lips and David gave in hungrily to the kiss, parting only to allow Cook to pull the shirt up over his head. He was so into what was going on, that he failed to hear the door unlock and someone enter the house. It wasn’t until the shriek pierced the air that David finally brought himself back to reality.
The sudden shriek made David jump and he turned to look toward the door, his face draining of all color. Emily was standing there, suitcase in hand and her mouth open in utter shock. Cook had frozen too and he slowly turned his head around to look in the direction of the sudden shriek. He was very aware that he had just been caught, naked on top of David who was shirtless by a girl who was obviously his lover’s fiancée. He turned to look at David again and wasn’t surprised to find that his lover’s face was stock white.
“Is this why you wanted me to leave for a few days David?!” Emily said in an angry voice when she finally found the nerve to speak. “So you could sneak guys in and have sex with them!” It was obvious to David that she was not very happy with the situation she had found him in. It was also apparent that she hadn’t realized just who the naked guy on top of her fiancé was. Had she taken a closer look, he was sure she would have noticed that it was in fact the very same missing David Cook. However, that was not the matter right now.
He couldn’t say anything. He gulped heavily and looked down at the floor for several minutes, trying to figure out how best to respond to the situation. Emily dropped her bag on the floor and put both her hands on her hips. “Well?” she went on, venom practically dripping from her voice as she spoke. It was clear that she was very angry with David. He didn’t think that they would ever resolve it but he wasn’t surprised to find that that fact didn’t bother him. This was his perfect chance to get out of his relationship with Emily. He didn’t want to hurt her but he apparently already did.
Cook had taken the liberty to climb off David and grabbed the towel to cover himself up but Emily appeared not to have noticed. Her full attention was on David and she was glaring at him, giving him the evil eye.
After taking a moment to recollect himself David stood up from the couch and grabbed his shirt, which Cook had tossed to the floor. He pulled it back on over his head and walked up to Emily. She was still glaring at him but she changed positions, moving her hands from her hips to cross her arms over her chest. She cocked her head to the side, eyes narrowing as David approached her as though challenging him to deny the truth. But David had no intentions of doing so.
Reaching Emily, he looked her straight in the eye, a very soft expression resting on his face. “I have a confession to make Emily,” he said calmly. Emily scoffed but did not say anything. “Please, don’t make this harder for me than it already it,” he went on. This time Emily gave him a look of disbelief.
“And just why should I give you that privilege? I did everything I could for you David! I was there for you; I even kept our love making to not so often despite how many times I wanted to feel you. I put up with the fact that you were never in the mood for lovemaking. I never once protested. When you wanted to be left alone, I left you alone. I was the perfect fiancée! I gave you no reason to feel you needed to be with someone else and now I come home to find you not only in the arms of someone else but in the arms of another man!”
David looked down at the floor for a moment before lifting his eyes and looking back at her. “Emily, I can’t begin to tell you how sorry I am. I wanted this to work, really I did. I even thought that it would work. I do love you and I want you to be happy but I’m afraid that you’re going to be happy with me. You deserve someone else. You’re meant for someone else.” He stopped there. Emily was just looking at him, pressing him with her eyes to go on. Sighing, he glanced over at Cook and Emily followed his gaze, noticing for the first time whom the naked man she’d found straddling her fiancé was. “That’s David Cook, Emily,” David went on. Emily’s eyes went wide, the anger leaving them to be replaced by a look of amazement and surprise.
“Didn’t he go missing four years ago?” she asked, turning her attention back on David. David nodded and looked her straight in the eye. “Four years ago when…” she trailed off but David was sure he knew what she had been about to say.
“Four years ago when I was in love with him, yes,” he finished for her and for a moment Emily just looked at him. Their eyes connected and in that moment, understanding struck her. She knew what this was really all about and David could sense shame in her eyes now. She was ashamed of herself for lashing out at David just because he was rekindling his love with someone she knew he believed to be gone for good.
“David I…” she began, looking down at the floor and not really able to meet his eyes anymore. David put a hand on her shoulder and cocked his head to the side. She subconsciously laid a hand atop his.
“It’s alright, I understand,” David said in a calm voice, trying his best to be reassuring. “You’re sorry for the way you just acted,” he added. She managed to look back at him and after a moment, she nodded her head, looking down at the floor again. A single tear slid from her eye as she did so. David brushed it away with his thumb, trying to will her not to cry.
“David, I know that you belong with Cook but I don’t know how I will be able to cope with this. I love you, I honestly do but I don’t’ want to be selfish and say you can’t be with him. He earned your heart first and therefore is the proper owner of it. I can’t be selfish and take that away from you or him for that matter. Besides, I know how so many of the fans are mad at you for betraying him even though there was no evidence that he was even still alive. This way, you can prove to them that you never betrayed Cook. I’m sure in your heart, you knew that if he ever did come back, you would go back to him. I have no doubt in my mind that you would have,” she said. That was Emily though. She had always understood and that was one of the reasons why David admired her. He watched her glance at Cook once more and a gentle smile crossed her face. “Though, I’m not too thrilled to have come home to find you in that position with him.” David laughed lightly.
“So, what are you going to do now?” he asked. Emily sighed and looked away for a moment, trying to think about what she was going to do. She finally looked back at him, a reassuring smile on her face.
“I kept my apartment on hold, the one I lived in when I met you. I’ve been paying the rent for it even though I’m not living there. I didn’t want anyone else to rent it out in case something like this happened.” It was David’s turn to be surprised. She had been prepared to leave if something like this were to happen? How could she have expected it? “David, I’m not stupid,” she went on. “I’ve seen you staring at a picture of you and Cook countless times. I know how much you missed him.” She looked over at Cook who was simply standing there holding the towel around his waist. “Don’t worry about me. I’ll move back into my apartment and everything will be fine,” she finished with a small smile on her face.
David didn’t say anything. He looked first at the floor, than at Cook, than back to Emily, and than back down at the floor again. He was finding all of this hard to comprehend. She had been prepared to leave if she would have to. Why had she ever even thought that she would have to leave and it wouldn’t work out between the two of them? It was in that moment that David really understood why they said that girls matured faster than boys. Emily had just proved it after all, that was for sure.
However, there was the fact that Cook really could’ve have been gone for good and then, well, David probably would have spent the rest of his life in an unhappy relationship, trying to fake everything like he had been for the last year or so, ever since he and Emily had gotten engaged. She had been the one to propose to him and not knowing what else to do at the time, as he had just about given up Cook for lost, he’d said yes to her. Now she knew that he had never really wanted to say yes to her. It pained him too much to attempt to move on and marry someone else, someone other than his Cook. When David had first fallen for Cook, he knew somehow in his gut that the two of them were just destined to be together. It was just something that was a fact. There was no denying that. It seemed that Emily had seen that too and now, she was being rather supportive of the situation.
He looked back over at Cook who was still watching, his eyes wide as though he couldn’t believe what was happening. Was David’s fiancée willingly giving herself up so that he could have David? From his point of view, that was what it looked like. David didn’t blame him for feeling that way. Emily had always been one of those people who was quick to understand things and that probably played a part in the fact that she had formulated a backup plan for herself should something like this happen.
“So, you’re just going to leave and go back to single life?” Cook asked and both David and Emily turned to look at him. She gave him a gentle smile and nodded her head shortly, turning to look back at David.
“It’s the best thing for me and for him,” she said as she looked at David. Turning her eyes back on Cook, she went on. “He loves you and I’m not going to be mean and take that away from him, not when he has just found you again.” Cook looked at her for a moment and nodded his head.
“Thank you,” he said in a quiet voice and Emily smiled at him again.
“Yes, thank you,” David agreed, not really knowing what else to say. He was rather grateful for Emily’s quickness to step aside. He looked down at his hand where the engagement ring rested for a moment. “I guess I’d better…” he started, moving his other hand to remove the ring but Emily put a hand over his and pulled his hand away.
“Keep it. I gave that ring to you fair and square. It’s not fair of me to take it back,” she said shaking her head. “Even if we’re no longer engaged. But I can guarantee you the breakup will come as good news to your fans. They’ll be even happier when they finally learn the reason for it. I’m sure everyone will be ecstatic once they learn that David Cook is alive and well.” David smiled, as did Cook. He dropped his hand back down to his side, still looking at the ring upon his finger. “You could put that in a keepsake box or something,” Emily said, nodding toward the ring. David smiled again.
“You know, that’s not such a bad idea,” he agreed. She smiled at him and then she pulled him in for a hug. David hugged her back. “Thank you again. You’re a wonderful girl Emily. I’m sure there are plenty of guys who would love to marry you,” he told her. He felt Emily smile again against him and she pulled back to look at him.
“Well, I’m going to go pack for my move. You two better enjoy your life together,” she said and turned to head up the stairs when David stopped her suddenly.
“Emily?” She turned to look at him, one hand on the banister. “Why were you looking at my yearbook?” he asked her. She looked at him for a moment as though she didn’t know what he was talking about but then she smiled softly.
“I only wanted to learn a little about your past, David. You never really told me anything but now I think that’s because it was simply too painful for you to talk about.” She looked at him for a moment, smiled again and disappeared up the stairs. Silently, David told himself that she was right and a small smile crossed his face. Things were going to be different from now on, he could tell. Today was the start of a new chapter in his life and he couldn’t help feeling the happiness as it spread through him. He had his Cook back and he had some good friends. Nothing could ruin his life now, right? If only he knew, how very wrong he was.
