Kelly turned to see her friends waiting expectantly for her. She began the walk slowly back from the foyer, as Jess and Ashley smiled from the living room.
"So, Kel," Ashley looked at Jess as they both smiled at Kelly. "We like her."
"Well, good,' Kelly shrugged, unsure of their declaration.”She's fun."
"Yeah," Jess commented. "And she's cute. She'd be great for you."
"Excuse me?" Kelly shook her head.
'It's clear as day, honey," Ashley laughed. "And we just wanted you to know that we are alright with that..."
Kelly laughed nervously. "Y'all! Y'all, are just crazy...and I have no idea what y'all are insinuatin'."
"We're not insinuating anything. We just think she's good for you and y'all should hang more often. Trust us," Ashley snickered.
"Whatever!" Kelly giggled. "Y'all are weird!" With that, she turned around and walked to the porch. "I'm gonna go work on some new songs."
"Well, look at that," Jess whispered to Ashley. "New songs, huh?"
"I told ya. She just doesn't see it...or want to. But we are so right about this."
"True. But you know, Kel can be a tad clueless sometimes."
=======
Kelly sat on the porch typing furiously onto her laptop. This song seemed to be writing itself and she had most of the lyrics typed in about 10 minutes. As she finished the last sentence, and read over what had poured out of her, she stopped dead in her tracks.
It was always easier to write down her feelings and process them after they were down on paper, or screen. Ashley was right. It was as clear as day. She'd started writing a happy song about her friends, and it turned into what couldn't be described any other way, but a love song...except, the person running through her mind the whole time was Carrie. "Oh, crap," she giggled nervously. "This certainly hasn't happened to me before...and now what?"
She sat there thinking now that it was clear to her. "Ok, so this is just crazy. I cannot have a crush on the girl. I mean, she's awesome, beautiful, funny, and smart, but she would totally freak out if she even suspected it. Dang it!" She sighed. "Well, it is what it is. I guess I'll just use it as motivation to write, and that's it." She resigned herself to keep her newly discovered feelings hidden. So what if her friends suspected? They would never say anything about it, and she certainly wouldn't bring it up. But she did have to smile knowing that her friends approved.
=======
Carrie smiled as she opened her front door to find Ace. "Hey buddy!" She bent down to pet him as he wagged his tail, excited to see her. "I missed you today, were you a good boy at the vet?" His response was to lick her cheek, which made her giggle. She got up and made her way to the door leading from the family room to the backyard. "Here, boy!" He ran outside, as she plopped herself onto the couch.
After a whole day working in the studio, Carrie was ready for a quiet night at home. She was exhausted. The writers kept pitching her a million song ideas. Her favorite concept that day was a sort of "pre-Last Name." Basically the road trip adventure of her and her girlfriends a la Thelma and Louise before a guy comes into the picture.
She started daydreaming about the song and as she always did, the video concept. "How fun it would be if I could have Kelly in my video?" She shook her head wondering where the idea came from. She had been really busy with everything going on, but wanted to check in on Kelly realizing that she would be leaving for Australia the next morning.
"There's only one thing to do," she thought as she reached for her phone. She got unexpectedly nervous as she found Kelly's number in her contacts. Carrie giggled when she heard Kelly's ring back tone.
"Hello?" Kelly answered slightly out of breath.
That caught the blonde by surprise, so she cleared her throat. "Hey! So, AC/DC, huh? Never would've pegged it."
"Ha, yeah. It's one of my faves ever."
Carrie smiled at the sound of Kelly's laughter. "Really, You Shook Me All Night Long?"
Kelly blushed. "Yup! But...only if you're good!"
The blonde was definitely not ready for a comment like that. She coughed. "Oh, I'm always good," she teased.
A lumped formed on Kelly's throat and she just laughed.
"No comeback?" The blonde was surprised.
"Eh, not this time," Kelly squeaked out, feeling her cheeks burn and thankful that Carrie couldn't see her face. "So, did you just call me for jokes or what?"
"Oh, right. Well, I just wanted to wish you a safe trip. I remembered that you are leaving tomorrow, right?"
"Yeah..."
"Awesome. Well, guess what?" Carrie stated as she got up to call Ace back into the house. All she really had to do was open the door and the rat terrier made his way inside.
"What's that?"
"Apparently the label thinks I should make a trip Down Under and promote my album."
Kelly contained her excitement. "Really? Country music in Australia?"
"They said something about people finding my music online and stuff. It makes sense to them...for some reason."
"Well, that's cool."
"Yeah, I got really excited 'cause I knew you'd be there, but unfortunately, my trip isn't for a few weeks."
Kelly smiled when she heard Carrie mentioned that she thought of her. But then realized they would miss each other. "Aww. That's a bummer."
"Yeah," came the honest response. "But anyway. We worked on the concept of a new song today."
"Oh, yeah?" Kelly perked up.
"Yup, and I figured if anyone would get it, it'd be you."
"Sure thing. Lay it on me."
"Well," the blonde walked back to the couch and sat next to Ace. "It's kind of like a road trip song. Me and my best friend out on an adventure. Kinda like Thelma and Louise, you know, minus the killing someone or dying part."
Kelly laughed. "Now that sounds fun!"
"Yeah...we'll see how it works, though. You know how it is. Twenty million ideas never get anywhere."
"Trust me, I know. I have, like, 3 CDs worth of songs just sitting on my laptop."
"Really?" Carrie perked up.
"Yeah...and no, I ain't sharin'!"
"Oh," Carrie attempted to hide her disappointment.
"Well, it's not that," Kelly mentally slapped herself. "I just, I'm not ready to..."
"It's ok, Kel," Carrie reassured her. "I can wait until you're ready..." There was something else about the way the blonde said it. It hung in the air as both girls' thoughts were racing.
Kelly freaked out when she thought about Carrie had said. "Surely, she didn't mean that. I'm totally reading into this...I think. Man, what is wrong with me?"
'Um...Kel?" She heard on the line. Carrie worried that she had crossed a line.
"Yeah?" she quickly recovered.
"Oh, ok. You got really quiet. I thought I lost ya. Anyway. As I was saying, I hope you have a great trip and maybe I'll see you when you get back?"
Kelly grinned. "Oh, you can count on that! So, in the meantime, keep me posted. I don't really answer calls when I'm working, but you can text me or something if you want."
"I understand. And I definitely will...and you can too, you know." Carrie pet Ace and shook her head. "Wow, I sound like a freakin' school girl!"
"Oh, I will...oh, just know I'll be about 15 hours ahead of you."
"Ha," Carrie snorted. "Duly noted. So, bon voyage!"
"Cute, Care. Really cute! Have a great night and I'll talk to you later."
======
Kelly arrived in Sydney completely exhausted. Twenty-two hours on a plane never did anything for her. But she knew it was a small price she'd have to pay. If only to please Narvel and the label. She wasn't really in the habit of thinking about the label, but she'd had great success with Mike Shipley. She had to jump at the chance, knowing that he'd agreed to take time from his sabbatical to help her.
Jason had made all the arrangements and Kelly followed along, looking forward to passing out on a nice comfy bed. "Are we there yet?" She asked looking out the window of the SUV driving them to the hotel.
"Almost, Ms. Clarkson," the driver smiled.
Kelly wrinkled her nose. "Please, call me Kelly...and thank you."
Within minutes, they were pulling into the delivery entrance for the hotel. Kelly looked confusedly at Jason.
He smiled. "Just takin' care of ya, sis. You're tired. Figured you'd want to just sneak in."
"I so love you right now," she laughed as she hugged his neck.
They made their way upstairs and to their suite. They looked in awe as the doors opened to reveal the incredible view. Marble floors, white and gold decoration, simply gorgeous.
"Huh, what a dump!" Ashley teased.
The bellboy looked at them curiously. Kelly noticed immediately, so she spoke up. "Oh, she's just kidding. This suite is gorgeous."She turned to her stylist. "Ash, don't say stuff like that. I mean, someone may not get the joke and next think you know, that's how rumors start."
"You're right," she seemed to agree. "And we certainly don't want any rumors..."
"Yeah, yeah," Kelly spoke, ignoring Jason's confused look. "Can y'all take care of this? I really, really, want a nap....please?"
Before she could hear an answer, she grabbed her bag and made her way down the hall to the master room. "Prefect," she smiled as she saw the inviting king sized bed just waiting for her. She pulled her pillow out of her bag, threw the bag on the floor and hopped onto the bed.
Just as she was taking her shoes off and getting settled, she felt her phone vibrate in her pocket. She smiled as she saw who it was from. Carrie.
"Hi U. Hope u made it OK. Let me kno?"
She thought for a second before deciding on a reply: "Yup. About to get in bed. Miss U." She thought twice about it. "Should I say I miss her?" She decided that it was harmless, and sent it.
A few seconds went by and she started to get a tad worried. Then, it came. "Aw. K. Sweet dreams. Miss u 2!"
Kelly's heart melted as she saw that. "Hmm, she misses me too!" With that, her head hit the pillow and she was out cold in a flash.
