Disclaimer: I do not know Vladimir Kozlov personally. I am not making any money off of this story, and it is a work of fiction. Nothing written in this story has actually happened. |
Vladimir pulled down his rearview mirror to check his reflection as he waited in his car outside of his therapist’s office. Her 1992 red Acura Integra pulled up next to him and he got out to open her door for her. As she got out, he kind of stood back in amazement. She was more beautiful than ever. He didn’t know exactly how to greet her, and he couldn’t really find any words, so he just stood in front of her waiting for her to do something. She stared at him.
“Hi…” He shook his head slightly.
“Renae…how are you?” She wrapped her arms around him and he gladly reciprocated. Her body felt warm and soft in his arms, and it was so hard to resist the urge to bend down and kiss her. He didn’t know if he should or not, so he just didn’t. She pulled away and they walked up the stairs together into the waiting room. His therapist greeted them and shook Renae’s hand, and then invited them both into her office. Nervously he sat down on the couch and wondered if she’d sit next to him or sit on the chair across the room. Surprisingly, she chose to sit on the couch next to him. He looked at her ass briefly as she walked toward the couch. It was still perfect: round and big. For a second he thought about how amazing it would feel to just reach out and grab it. Then he cleared his mind of those thoughts.
She sat down, but she didn’t look at him. She looked over at Dr. Woodrow and waited for her to speak.
“Renae, I thought it was important for you to come here today not only for you and I to discuss how Vladimir is doing, but also for the two of you to discuss some of your issues. I think it is important for you two to work out the issues in your relationship.” She nodded slowly, and still didn’t look at him. “Who would like to start?”
“I will,” she volunteered. His knees buckled. Finally, she looked over at him. “Vladimir, I don’t know what’s wrong with you, or what happened to us, but I feel very betrayed by you and very scared of you. Everyone is wondering why I am trying at all to keep this marriage together. Sometimes…I wonder, too. It seems like from the first day you and I became involved you had no respect at all for my wishes or what I wanted. It seemed like it was always all about what you wanted to do and when you wanted to do it, and then all of a sudden it turned violent.” He was stunned at his own selfishness.
“I…I don’t know what am I supposed to say.” Dr. Woodrow chimed in.
“Tell her how you feel about what she just said.” His mouth felt dry. He looked deeply into her big, beautiful brown eyes.
“I didn’t know I am so selfish. I guess I think I was doing those things to make you feel good at first and then I get angry. I didn’t deal with it right so I take it out on you.”
“Yeah, well, why were you angry?” He looked away from her and looked over at Dr. Woodrow. He really didn’t want to tell Renae why he had felt angry towards her, because he wanted them to just get past it and forget about it.
“Do I have to tell her?”
“Yes, I think you should.” He sighed.
“I was angry at you first because I felt like you weren’t attracted to me anymore. I felt like I was having to climb mountains just to get you to pay attention to me at all and it made me feel shit. It make me feel like I am unattractive, or you don’t want me. So I was angry about that. And then I get angry because I remember all the times you have lie to me. I have never lie to you, ever. I say I wouldn’t and I haven’t, but you have told me lies before and it pissed me off.” She stared blankly at him.
“So that gives you the right to hit and rape me? Like, I don’t understand.” Despite the seriousness of the situation, he almost wanted to laugh at her use of the word ‘like’.
“No, it doesn’t give me right to do those things. I deal with it the wrong way; I say you that already. I’m sorry.”
“It’s not just that you dealt with it the wrong way. I feel like there’s something inside you that just resents women.”
“No, there isn’t. I don’t know why I do what I did…I can’t explain it.” They talked, and fought, really, for the rest of the thirty minutes before Dr. Woodrow asked Vladimir to leave. He sat in the waiting room for the next thirty minutes waiting for Renae to come out of the office. Finally, the door opened and she appeared. She closed the door and looked at him out of the corner of her eye.
“Can I walk you to your car?” She looked up at him as he asked her this question.
“Yeah, I guess.” They walked together in silence until they reached her car, and stood outside for a few minutes before actually saying anything. He spoke first.
“Thank you for coming today. I really appreciate it.” She looked away, watching the cars speed past.
“You’re welcome,” she muttered.
“Renae…” She put up her hand to silence him and abruptly turned toward him again.
“I didn’t really know how hard you were working. I didn’t have any idea that you hadn’t touched alcohol in five months or that you really were working so hard. I didn’t know. I’m really very proud of you.” He looked away and he could feel himself starting to smile again.
“Thank you so much. I really do work hard…I want to change. And I want you back.” She stared at him for a second and then turned away. He reached out to touch her, but then he retracted his hand.
“It’s okay,” she whispered softly. He reached for her again and pulled her close to him.
“I know how happy you are without me…and I’m glad. But I’m miserable without you.” She squeezed him and then pulled away, without saying anything.
“I have to get home to the baby.”
“Renae…”
“Call me if you want me to come in with you again, okay?”
“I can’t just call you?” She gave him a stern sort of look while playing with her keys, signaling that she really wanted to leave.
“No. The deal was that we wouldn’t talk or spend any time together until you knew you were completely ready.” They stared into each others’ eyes for a few moments.
“Renae…maybe this isn’t right time to ask this but…” She was becoming impatient, so he just blurted it out. “Can I kiss you?” She looked a bit surprised at his request and mulled it over.
“I…I don’t know…”
“It is okay. You don’t have to say yes. I will just wait.” Her eyes darted away from him, and it seemed as if she really did want to say yes, but she was scared. He opened her door for her as the cold October wind blew and sent her hair flying. Frantically, she held it down. Before she got into the car, he pulled her close again.
“Vladimir…”
“I love you. I talk to you soon, maybe.”
“I love you too. Goodbye.” She sat down in the driver’s seat, and he closed her door. He watched her until she drove away.
