Part 5: The Near Past
Tegoshi toyed with the water bottle in his hands. It was almost empty. Not because he’d been thirsty, but because he’d mostly taken sips just for something to do while he waited. Waited hours. Hours where, in his mind, he played different scenarios of how things would turn out. He wanted to be prepared for any situation that might arise. So he’d imagined all the ways she could react, from anger to delight, and how he should react in turn. The last thing he wanted was to screw this up.
The sound of footsteps on the stairs got his attention, and he looked up in time to see her top the last step of the stairs. He pushed to his feet from where he’d sat leaning against her door. “Can we talk?”
She had halted, startled, and now moved to her door. “It’s late, Tegoshi-kun…” The sight of someone rising from in front of her door had scared her, but now her heart raced for a very different reason. He looked so good! Why did he have to look so good?
He caught the hand that she had the key in as she inserted it into the lock. A gentle restraint, nothing to make her panic, and yet she froze, and he felt her hand tremble beneath his fingers. “I like you,” he confessed. He never was one to pretend. When he liked someone he told her.
She hadn’t moved, but he saw how her chest moved a little more strongly. His words had affected her. He moved closer to her, still not releasing her hand. “Dani,” he used the more intimate form of her given name in a low whisper. “I know we enjoyed our date, and it was a date,” he hurriedly said when he saw her turn her head slightly towards him to argue the point. “It was a date,” he repeated. “You know it as much as I do.”
This close, even in the shadows because there was no light on above her door, he could see the darkening of her cheeks. “Why are you denying this?” he whispered, frowning. “What is it about Johnny’s that you hate so much?”
He heard the small catch in her breathing. “I don’t hate Johnny’s.” She shook her head lightly, and put her free hand on his chest to hold him back. “There are too many factors of why this wouldn’t work,” she desperately tried.
“Like what?” he demanded, his voice rising slightly in his frustration. He caught the hand she had on his chest with his free one, holding it there, feeling the warmth of it seep through his clothes to his skin, and beneath to his heart. “What factors, Dani? Don’t you think this is something we should discuss? It concerns me too,” he reminded her.
“I didn’t think you cared because I heard you were dating others,” she blurted, and flushed at the obvious edge of jealousy in her voice.
Now he blushed, and winced. “That was a lame attempt to try to forget you,” he admitted.
“Smart move,” she tried to move away, to end it. Standing this close to him, feeling his warm breath stir her hair was driving her mad. His hands were so warm. She could have pulled free long ago, but didn’t seem to have the will to. It took all her effort to not lean into him, to not press her face against his shoulder where it met the crook of his neck, and to not slide her hand up and around to his nape and pull his face closer to hers. Just one kiss, just one taste of his lips, but if she did that she’d be lost.
He tugged to prevent her breaking contact, and it brought them even closer, her breath now on his chin, and his caressing her brow. “It was the stupidest thing I ever did. I never actually went out with anyone else. I just let my parents think I was. I kept making Massu go to karaoke with me.”
She had done some research on Johnny’s Entertainment and on Tegoshi’s career. Even in her classroom there were a few women near her own age who were fans of Johnny’s and had been gushing with information. So she knew who Massu was when he was mentioned. “It would never work,” she tried to sound firm.
Tegoshi’s lips thinned, and he scowled. “Do you really believe that?” She nodded brusquely, and he snorted in disbelief. “Then look me in the eyes and say it again, and this time mean it. If you can do that I’ll leave right now and not bother you again.” He swallowed hard, hoping he was right that she wouldn’t be able to do that.
Her brows knit together, and she stared at the Adam’s apple in his throat, her jaw working as she tried to control her breathing. Forcing her eyes to lift she became, for a moment, lost in the intensity and determination of his gaze. “Tegoshi-kun,” she managed to get out as a shaky whisper. Her mouth opened, and nothing came out. Her gaze dropped to his throat again. “It would never…”
“My eyes are up here,” he interrupted. He knew it was harsh to do that, but he would accept nothing less than to see the truth in her eyes while she rejected him.
“Dammit, I know where they are!” she snapped.
He felt one hand tighten on the doorknob, and the other’s fingers dig into his chest. “So why won’t it work? I’m allowed to have a private life so long as I keep it private. There are ways. A lot of Johnny’s have done it, and for years. I don’t know what fans are like in America, but I can walk down the street here without being attacked. No one bothered us on our date.”
That was true. “I’m your senior…”
“Age doesn’t matter. I’ll be twenty soon, a legal adult. You’re not that much older than me, and I don’t care even if you are,” he told her. Tegoshi slightly moved the hand she had on his chest to where his heart was beating. “Do you feel it?” he asked in a whisper. “It’s pounding. It does that when I’m near you.”
A small sighing moan escaped her, but she cut it off by pressing her lips together tight. “You’re the son of one of my students,” she desperately tried to argue.
“I’m not a child,” he shot. “That student of yours is a grown woman who is married and has a full grown son. I’m not your student. There’s no wrong here,” he told her.
“And if that student disapproves?” she asked.
He shrugged. “Then I’ll just have to talk to my mother,” he told her. “I’ll be twenty soon. It’s my life, my choice… my heart.”
Her eyes fell shut, and she almost moaned again at that. He knew how to say things to break through her defences. Japanese males, unlike their American counterparts, had a more romantic and lyrical way of seeing things and speaking them. A way that made a woman’s heart melt. “There are other things,” she lamely tried in a small voice. Damn him!
Tegoshi’s eyes fell half shut, and he smiled softly. Her breathing was faster against his chin, and he tilted his head slightly, drawn by it. Her lips were so close. All he had to do was lean forward slightly, just a little… So close that the whisper of space between their lips vibrated with their mingled breaths. Her fingers curled into his shirt, clinging to it, both of her hands trembling within his. So close that the scent of her hair and skin filled him, and he inhaled deeply of it. So close that if he moved the hand she had on his chest she would fall more into him, and he would be able to know the feel of her breasts against him.
With a low deep groan he pulled that hand up to his shoulder, and as she fell into him his lips pressed to hers. He didn’t deepen the kiss; there was no need to yet. He was content just to have this contact. The shape and softness of her mouth clinging to his, her hand gripping his shoulder and holding him to her, and the womanly brush of the tips of her breasts against his chest. They were intoxicating. His heart pounded and raced, his nostrils flared as his breathing sped up, and his body warmed.
“Yu…”
A door opened, grating loudly, behind him, and he cursed softly as she yanked free. He had no choice but to move a few steps back from her, turning slightly to see the old shop owner. He bowed to her politely, muttering a greeting. What rotten timing! When he turned back to Dani she had managed to unlock her door, and wasn’t looking at him.
“Good night, Tegoshi-kun,” she bowed her head without looking at him.
Tegoshi-kun? After their kiss? After he knew she’d been about to say his given name? “But, we need to talk…”
“I don’t think there’s much else to say,” she hurriedly interrupted. She gave another bow, and then shut the door.
Tegoshi stood there, stunned. “What the hell!” he exploded, turning away in frustration, and banged a fist against the railing before him. He saw the shop owner, and he bowed as he apologized.
She caught his sleeve as he went to leave. “The sensei, don’t give up.” She poked a finger at his chest. “I hear her, listening to you sing every night.”
His brows shot up. “Thank you.” When he left he was smiling.

The Present
YamaPi nodded, grinning. “So you kissed her.”
“Bold move,” Koyama stated. “Especially since she’d been going out of her way to avoid you. She could have reacted badly.”
“But she didn’t,” Ryo argued. “He did the right thing to follow his instincts. Besides, if she’d hated him she would have told him right out. She was trying to deny her own feelings by avoiding him.”
“I think you’re right,” Shige agreed.
“I’m always right!” Ryo automatically shot, and then blushed while Koyama called him bold and the others laughed. He waved a dismissing hand. “Point is, even the old woman said Sensei Warukaa liked Tesshi. Now he knew it for sure too ‘cause she didn’t fight him when he kissed her.”
Even Koyama had to agree that kind of logic made sense. Tegoshi lifted his can of beer, taking a few deep swallows. The taste grew on you, and he didn’t mind it so much now. Maybe it was because he was drinking with his friends while they tried to help him get through a rough patch in his life. He knew he’d survive, but he knew it wouldn’t be easy, and it would take a long time. All of it would be more bearable with these five males a part of it.
“So you didn’t win her that night,” Masuda interrupted. “What did you do?”
Tegoshi moistened his lips and smiled. “I knew she’d try to avoid me again. I didn’t chase her the way I tried before. It took up too much energy and got me nowhere. Instead I used the ally I knew I suddenly had.”
“Ally?” Shige blinked.
“The old woman,” Ryo told him. “The one who told him not to give up.”
“That’s right. I left a basket of apples on Dani’s doorstep one day, and another day I left a CD I’d made of music that I liked and thought would convey my feelings to her. The old woman would call to tell me when Dani went to the market, and I’d show up and bump into her like it was a coincidence.”
“Smooth,” YamaPi nodded approvingly.
“And how did that go?” Koyama’s brows arched quizzically.
“The day I showed up at the market was the day she knew I’d never give up,” Tegoshi replied with a nod. “And the day I won.” He saw all of them glance at him with eager anticipation. Yes, it had been a good day.
