Resting her head against the headboard Carrie allowed her eyes to flutter shut as she brought her thumb and index fingers together, guiding them towards her ring finger on her left hand. Ignoring the few tears that began to slide down her cheeks, she pinched her wedding band with her two fingers and slowly twirled it around and up until it was resting weightlessly in the palm of her hand. Finally she forced her eyes open and down, completely oblivious to the fact that her mother in-law had entered the bedroom.
“Are you sure you don’t want to go back tonight?” Jeanne questioned as she lowered herself down beside the younger girl.
Lazily Carrie's eyes drifted towards her wife’s mother, struggling to focus on the woman’s gaze.
She swallowed hard and nodded slowly. “Yeah, I’m sure. She doesn’t remember me right now and…it’s just going to take some time, I understand that. She needs you guys right now.”
Jeanne let out a soft sigh and gently placed her hand on top of Carrie’s knee. “She needs you just as much, Care, and she will remember that.” She gave her a reassuring squeeze on the knee before pushing up from the bed.
“Dr. Coleman said we’ll just have to ease her into remembering the things she’s forgotten.” Jeanne continued to speak positively.
Carrie closed her hand around her wedding band. “Five years…” She murmured, her eyes faltering away from Jeanne’s.
Jeanne took a few steps closer to Carrie and once again lowered herself beside her. “Carrie,” She began, waiting for the girl to look back up at her. When she realized the girl wasn't going to look up she placed a hand under her chin and gently nudged it up, “She will remember you, okay? Both you and Lyra and everything you guys have fought hard to have, she will.”
Carrie let out a shaky breath and shook her head. “God, I hope you’re right. I don’t know what I’d do without her…I just need…” She paused, pulling her face away from Jeanne’s touch, allowing a loud sob to escape from her mouth.
Taking a deep breath she continued. “I need to make her see that…I need to make sure she knows how much she means to me.”
“She knows, Carrie, trust me she knows.”
She shook her head at the older woman. “No, I don’t think she’s known for a while now. I’ve been such a shitty wife this last year or so…somewhere down the line I stopped trying to change that.”
Jeanne pulled her into a tight hug and held onto her for a few moments before finally drawing away. “I don’t know what happened with you guys, and it’s not my place to butt in, but I do know that whatever it is, if anyone can work their way through it, it’s you two.”
Carrie watched her mother in-law push up from the bed once again and inch her way towards the door to leave.
“If you need anything don’t hesitate to call me, alright?”
She nodded from the bed. “I won’t.” She promised.
“Lyra is in her room playing with her toys. Ashley and Alyssa offered to keep an eye on her when they come back so you can rest some.”
She offered a weak smile. “Thanks. Give Kel a kiss for me.” She requested softly.
Jeanne smiled and nodded. “Of course dear, you try and get some sleep.” Carrie nodded at the woman even though she knew sleep definitely wasn’t in her near future.
After Jeanne disappeared out into the hallway Carrie finally opened her palm, releasing the tight grasp she had had on her wedding band. Carefully she pinched the platinum between her two fingers again and securely slid it back down to where it belonged.

Complying with her best friend’s request, Ashley lifted the hand held mirror up in front of Kelly’s face, allowing the other girl to catch a glimpse of her reflection.
“When did I dye my hair blonde?” She wondered out loud, reaching out with her good arm and grasping the mirror tightly in her hand as she examined herself.
Jason and Alyssa glanced over in Ashley’s direction and waited for her to respond. “A while back,” She replied carefully.
The sound of the door to the room opening caused Kelly to lower the mirror from in front of her face and look over towards the doorway. She instantly felt a smile spread across her face as her mother appeared inside of the room.
“Hey, sweetheart, I’m sorry I wasn’t here when you woke up.” She apologized, inching closer to her daughter’s side.
Kelly shook her head and immediately took her mom’s hand into her own as she offered it to her. “It’s okay. I was a bit shocked to see Carrie here but I’m glad someone was here when I woke up.”
“She was really worried about you.” Jeanne said, giving her hand a gentle squeeze before shifting her head to shoot a side glance at the other three people in the room. “Y’all can head on back to Carrie’s for the night…” She spoke cautiously, keeping her eyes on her children.
Kelly’s eyebrows scrunched together in confusion. “Y’all are staying at Carrie’s? That’s awfully nice of her; could you thank her for me?”
Jeanne smiled knowingly and nodded her head. “I’ll be sure to thank her for you. I’m going to walk those three out and then I’ll be back in, okay?” She waited until Kelly nodded in approval before pushing away from the bed and following Ashley, Jason and Alyssa out of the room.
Pulling the door closed behind her she waited until she heard the secure clicking sound indicating that the door was shut completely.
“You two will look after Lyra still, right?” Jeanne asked in a whisper, directing her attention at Ashley and Alyssa.
They answered in unison. “Yeah, of course we will.”
She shifted her attention to all three of them standing before her. “And please check in on Carrie, will you? I know the girl isn’t going to sleep much and even though she’s told me she’s eaten, I’m not buying it. So just make sure she’s taking care of herself, okay?” They all nodded at her in response.
“Okay, good. I’ll see you guys tomorrow, good night.” She pulled them each into a quick hug before watching them turn and disappear down the long hallway.
Jeanne made her way back into the room and seated herself in the cushioned chair at Kelly’s bedside. “How long have I been in Nashville?” Kelly questioned, shifting slowly on the bed to look down at her mother.
Jeanne folded her hands in her lap. “A little while now.”
Sinking her teeth into her bottom lip Kelly allowed her body to completely relax against the uncomfortable bed. “Why does it seem like everyone is giving me these short answers, like they’re trying to avoid something…”
Sighing Jeanne leaned in closer towards the bed and placed a hand on top of Kelly’s. “No one is trying to avoid anything, Kelly, we’re just…being cautious.” She tried to explain.
She turned her head on the pillow until her eyes locked on her mother’s. “Cautious of what” She asked curiously.
“A number of things”
Groaning in frustration she squeezed her eyes shut and pulled her hand out from under her mother’s. “I have this feeling that I’m missing something…” She whispered, pinching the bridge of her nose.
Jeanne pushed up from the chair and leaned forward to place a quick kiss to Kelly’s forehead. “Honey, don’t push yourself about this right now…just…how about you try to get some sleep and I’ll try explaining some things to you tomorrow?” She offered, waiting for her daughter’s eyes to open again.
Prying one eye open slowly Kelly nodded at her mom. “Okay, I can try. But tomorrow,” she paused, opening her other eye in the process. “No more of this avoidance business…or whatever the hell is going on, because if I’m dying or something—“
Jeanne cracked a smile and shook her head. “It’s nothing that dramatic, Kelly.”
Kelly offered a smile in return and let out a soft chuckle. “Then what gives.” She pressed on.
Jeanne lifted a brow and crossed her arms over her chest. “Kelly Brianne.”
Holding her good arm up in surrender she chuckled again. “Alright, alright, I’ll stop with the pestering, but you’ll explain what’s going on tomorrow…”
Jeanne nodded. “Tomorrow”
