Beauty Under The Blood
Fifth Chapter:
Mike's Rival.
Her eyes locked into his and her perfect, dazzling smile appeared. His heart almost stopped beating as she came closer to him.
“Yes…I would love to.” She answered with her smooth, sweet voice and lifted her hand up in a graceful move.
He held her hand and got closer, but not too close for their bodies to touch. She placed her other hand on his broad shoulder as he slid his hand to her back. He had never been that close to her and he studied every detail: her ice blue eyes shining with the moonlight, the bronzed cheeks that accentuated the glow of her smile and her flawless, sun kissed skin. He felt her hand slightly compressing his shoulder as she took a step forward. Her hand glided to his shoulder blade the same time his hand moved down to her lower back. He could feel her body pressed against his and her scented hair on his neck. That moment seemed so unreal to him that he had to remind himself to breath. The next minutes seemed like seconds to him and his heart only stopped hammering when she stepped backwards, letting him go. She smiled at the ground, as she tried to find something to say.
“Thanks for the dance.” She then said and, with a last smile, she turned around and walked to her car. Mike
watched her leaving, hands inside his pockets. In that moment he realized that she was the most beautiful creature on earth and that he, well he was completely in love with her.
Mike was driving his way to his home, listening to the radio quite loudly. The car’s neon numbers showed 00.34 am. After Candice left the party, he quickly got tired and decided to go home too. He showed a meek smile to the road ahead him, flashbacking the last minutes before Candice’s departure. A mellow song was playing on the radio and he found himself muttering its lyric.

“Good morning Atwin!” Fred shouted.
“Hello Kutcher!” She answered back with a grin splashed on her face. She walked quickly to his office, the half Mexican guy following her.
“You look really happy today. What happened?” He asked, quickly approaching her.
“Oh nothing, I guess that I’m just in a good mood today.” She stopped in front of her door, smiled and opened it.
“But Sunday’s never a good day to work.” He teased, leaning against the door frame.
She looked at him and smiled. He was about her height, dark brown spiked hair, or better saying, messy hair.
“What do you want Fred?” She suddenly asked him, leaning against her desk.
“What do you mean?” He nervously fixed his grey untucked shirt.
“Frederick…Frederick Garcia Kutcher. I know you…” She said in a warning tone.
“Hey ok, ok. I was just wondering…since this is your last week in here…and you’re going to be out for a few months…maybe…maybe we could go out…you know for a drink or something, just as friends, as a goodbye you know?”
“Fine then!” She smiled. “How about tomorrow night? Since Tuesday is my day off and I’ll be leaving on Wednesday.”
“Yeah that sounds great. Tomorrow night then…”
She smiled again as he closed the door behind him. She sat on her desk and started to pack some folders and files. That was not a vacation trip, she said to herself constantly, so she knew she had a lot to do while out.
Her phone rang and she recognized the number as being Mike’s, she cleared her voice and answered it.
“Good morning Mr. Shi… hm Mike.”
“Hello Candice.” The voice on the other side answered with a happy yet, nervous voice.
“Something’s wrong? Don’t tell me that you found…” She started.
“No, no, it’s not that.” He interrupted her and laughed. But his laughter was somewhat tense. “I was just thinking if you would like to go out…” He suddenly stopped. Oh hell, what was he thinking about? She must had been thinking that he was some kind of a womanizer. “I mean going out with us! You know…the band… It would be nice before leaving, to discuss some stuff, you know?”
“Yes I see… But today I’m working until late, it wouldn’t be easy…”
“Of course, of course, I wasn’t even thinking about that. How about tomorrow night?” He asked, trying now to figure out a way to drag the guys to a “meeting” without them to suspect.
“Sorry Mike, I can’t. I already have plans for tomorrow night, I’m going out it Fred, you know Fred don’t you?”
He felt like a stone had hit his stomach once he heard what she said. He didn’t answer for a few seconds, his mind too surprised to talk.
“Mike? Mike, are you there?”
“Huh yeah sorry, I was just…huh…hm….forget it.”
Candice chuckled. “Hey listen, why don’t we get together on Tuesday, it’s my day off.”
“No that’s fine. We can talk about this during the tour, that’s no big deal. I’ve got to go now, I’ve got something…huh…on the oven.” And he hung up.
“That was weird…” She said to herself, but quickly returned to her work.
Mike placed the phone on the dining table. Yeah, last night seemed too good to be truth, he though. Of course a girl like her had already someone, and if she didn’t he was sure that that guy was interested on her. He sat on the sofa, just thinking, for a while. He had to know if his suspicions were right.

Monday evening
“Hey are you ready?” The olive skinned guy asked, knocking at Candice’s partially open door.
“Yes, hang on just a second.” She said. “I think that I’m starting to understand this…” He mumbled.
“What?” He asked entering her office and getting next to her, both staring at the laptop screen.
“Well remember when we talked to the victim’s families and didn’t get anything that could connect them?”
Fred looked at her and nodded.
“Well, look at them.” She pointed at the victim’s photos on her screen. “You see, the relation between them was so visible that we barely noticed.”
Fred looked closer to the photos. Indeed, there were lots of similarities. All of them were men, around the 40’s, with Mexican origin, with the almost the same height and weight.
“It’s a stereotype. It’s like if the person who killed them has some kind of hate for these type of people.” She affirmed.
“Maybe someone from his past life, someone like them, caused him pain…” He nodded. “But come on Candice, could you let this for another time? It’s almost 11 pm.” He continued.
She smiled and closed her laptop.
“So, where would you like to go?” She asked, looking for her car keys inside her purse.
“I know it’s high time for dinner, but we could eat something and the go to a bar, if you wanted to, of course.” Fred answered. She smiled and opened her car. About 20 minutes later they stopped at a fast food restaurant and ate, while still discussing some things about their case.
“Are you really sure you want to go with them?” Fred asked. Candice stopped eating and looked at him for a while.
“Why do you ask that?”
“Just asking…I want to know if you think it’s really necessary.”
“I think it is. Plus they’re very cool people, and I would feel terrible knowing that something could happen to them if I wasn’t there.”
Fred furrowed his eyebrows. He was studying her answer. “Do you mean that you like them?” He finally said.
“Yeah I actually do. They’re very nice and I feel the need to protect them.” She smiled.
Fred nodded and joined hands. He didn’t want to seem that, but he was getting a little jealous. She never knew, but he had a crush on her since the day she had started working there, which was for almost two years.
“I hope you have fun.” He forced a smile. “What do you think of Mike?”
“Mike?” Candice smiled, staring at the table. “Mike’s really nice.” Then laughed “and cute too.”
