Disclaimer: All I own are the plot and my OC's. Seriously, folks, I'm broke. Never met these guys; just a fluke dream I had and decided to expand on as cheap therapy. Please remember this is a work of fiction, as such, I don't get anything out of this. |
Leigh POV
The next morning I woke up to an empty bed and Ash yelling, "Leave your mom alone, Bud. Mama had a rough night, Buddy, let her sleep."
I jumped up and threw on some clothes. "Why didn't you wake me up?"
Ash just laughed from the kitchen, "Chill, Mama, I got this. You set up the coffee last night after the kids went down, and all I needed to do was get their milks. Charlie showed me where everything is. We got this, huh, Squirt," he said looking down at the seven year old standing next to him. It was then that I noticed what was different today; his hair was braided.
"Yep," Charlie deadpanned.
Ash smiled at her, then looked at me, "I also got the motor for the truck ordered; stop," he said as held his hand up. "They called. The truck will be fixed by Wednesday."
Ash PoV
I wasn't about to tell her that the one motor they found was more expensive than they had quoted her. Or that Andreas called and he was headed over with Clarks old snowblower. He said he was Clark's little brother, but I doubted that.
"Oh. ok," Leigh said, then added, "I like your hair like that. It suits you."
"Ehh. Didn't have much time, so pulling it back was the best option."
"Yet another reason why mine is so short."
A while later, when Andreas and his family pulled up, all I could think was, 'Ashley, you dick'.
When they came inside, I actually met them. There was Andreas, who was a few years younger than Clark had been. Andreas' wife, Raquelle, and their three kids.
Raquelle piped up, "Are you two dating? It's about time you start."
The good mood I had worked so hard to cultivate in Leigh today was gone in a flash. In her place was a fiery woman who never took crap from anyone. "Who are you to tell me what schedule I should be on," she yelled and shoved her tiny feet in her boots and walked out onto the front porch. I watched her light up a smoke and try to breathe.
I lost it. Turning to Raquelle, I asked, "Do you have any idea what you have done?"
The dark woman replied, "No. But it's been four years."
"If Andreas died tomorrow would you be ready in four years?"
"I guess I hadn't thought of that," she said after a moment.
"That's just it! No one bothered to put themselves in her shoes! Everyone put her grief on a timelime, a schedule; like it was no more than a broken bone," I shouted, my temper getting the better of me. Now, I got it. "No one ever thought enough about her to ask her if she was ready, so for two fuckin' years she has been hearing the same shit from everyone about how she should be over her fuckin' husband by now! Did you fuckin' know that without C.J. and Joey she wouldn't have made it at all! So don't even fuckin' attempt to stand there and say that it's about time."
"He was my brother," Andreas shouted.
I shook my head and tried to breathe. "Leave the snowblower and get the fuckin' hell out," I growled.
They left.
I did my best to calm down before checking on Leigh. When I did, I found her outside just staring out at the falling snow. "You ok?"
"No," Leigh said, then sighed. "Why is it that I am expected to be the strong one; the happy-go-fuckin'-lucky unaffected one, all the fuckin' time," she shivered, as the rage in her eyes started to burn itself out. "The sad part is that I already know why. It's because if I actually let go, people couldn't handle the fallout."
I took a quick second to grab the coats off of the rack just inside the door. When I came back, I laid hers over her shoulders.
"Thanks, Ash," she whispered.
"Not a problem, Mama," I said as I melped her get into her coat. Then, I put my arm over her shoulders. "Is that really how it feels?"
"Yep. It's like no one on earth could handle me at my worst; when my temper gets the better of me or when I fall apart. I learned that a long time ago, too."
As she spoke, I felt something strange inside, like I knew her, better than I thought I had a right to.
Later, I texted Jake to ask what the hell these feelings were.
"It's your heart coming alive again," Jake answered.
"And it's about time," CC interjected.
I hadn't noticed I had sent that to all the guys.
Andy and Jinxx both sent me a kissie face and a barf face.
But the next message was from Jake again. "Ash, home is where your heart lives, really lives; not your address."
"Thanks, Jake."
"I mean it. That place on the beach may be your house but it hasn't been home. It's beautiful, but it's cold. Her house may be cold outside right now, but its warm, and it lives. That's why. Home is a feeling, Ash, not a place on the map. Her place may be full of craziness, laughter, and tears; but that is what makes it home."
Soon after, a message from CC came in, "He's right you know; home is a feeling. But, if you really look, It's not the structure, it's the family within. If you feel like that's home, is it possible, that your awakening heart sees her's as home?"
When in the hell did CC get so deep? It definately gave me something to think about.
Later that evening, as we sat on the deck, under the overhang, I asked her a few questions.
"When did you lose your virginity?"
She laughed. "Which way?"
"Does it matter," I queried.
"Ok", she blushed a little, "Hmm. Giving, I would need to say 22. Receiving would be 16. Otherwise, almost 19. You?"
"15 for receiving. Giving was 18. 16. Have you ever smoked weed?"
Leigh chuckled, "I have. I liked the numb too much and had to quit. You?"
I nodded, then took a sip of my spiked hot chocolate, "Freshman year in high school. My Granddad caught me. Do ya drink?"
"Not anymore," she said, and then sipped her rapidly cooling coffee. "I used to drink like a fish, but Joey put a stop to that. I'd be whiskey bent and he would have to come bail me out. Guys would cop a feel and I would punch them," she paused, "or kick them."
I grunted and squeezed my knees together, "Ouch."
"I got lucky one night. Tex and her hubs were at the bar. Some dude tried to drag me away saying we were gonna have fun. Tyler hit him. Dude was in the hospital with his jaw wired shut."
"I take it 'Tex' isn't her real name."
Leigh laughed. "No. She was from Texas. We worked together at the Lanes. One night, a drunk asked her 'Hey, Tex, Where's yer horse'? She didn't flinch, she just turned around and said, 'Right up your ass, if'n ya don't leave me be'.
I laughed like I hadn't in a while.
Leigh laughed, "That first winter, they were at the bar. Before I could clock some bastard, Tyler dragged me outside and tossed me in a pile of snow. Cooled me off fast. But then I had to call for a ride home. Joey sent Lynn, his wife. I thank God everyday for Joey and Lynn. Lynn always has a ready hug and Joey keeps me straight."
"Glad you have friends like that, " I said.
Leigh snorted, "They are my only friends. I have an adopted sister in Cinci, but the last time she was home, was Clarks funeral."
"What about Clarks family?"
"You have met them. Shortly after Clarks accident, his dad died. His mom followed pretty soon after from a broken heart. Kyle's a mother fuckin' bastard and Rob has no reason to come down. Sarah, Janet, and Leslie are too far away to do much. Not that Sarah or Janet would anyway."
"Ow," I growled. "What about your family?"
She laughed, "We are even worse than Clarks. Scattered from hell to breakfast, we are. My sister and I don't talk unless we need to. C.J. and his wife live outside Amarillo. You've met ma and dad. The only other family members I have in town are my old Gram and a cousin who is agrophobic."
We went inside and went to refill our mugs; her from the coffee pot and mine from a pot on the stove. I was starting to walk back into the dining room as she turned around. We nearly crashed into one another.
"Hi," she whispered.
"Hey," I whispered back.
I am not sure what possessed me to set my mug down on the counter and take hers, setting it down by mine; but I am glad it did. I gently grasped the back of her head, resting my thumb on her jaw by her ear, pulling her towards me. It had been a while since I had done this. I leaned down and kissed her gently.
Leigh POV
'Holy shit, can this man kiss,' I thought to myself. He moved slowly, but every move was sure and full of heat. I thought there had been an earthquake and a fluke hurricane hit simultaneously, and found my hands gripping the bullnosed edge of the countertop. As he deepened it slightly, I felt myself shiver as heat pooled low in my belly.
Just as gently, he pulled away.
"Wow," Ashley whispered, his voice gruff. "Did you feel that?"
"The earthquake," I breathed.
Ash nodded. "And the hurricane," he whispered.
"Yeah," I sighed.
Ash chuckled, "What am I gonna do with a crazy, wild, strong, stubborn woman."
"Hmm, Don't know," I replied.
"Well, I do know that you need sleep. We both do, really. There is supposed to be a break in the storm tomorrow."
"Alright," I relented and crawled into bed.
A moment later he slid in behind me, snuggling up close.
"Hey," I growled, "I thought we agreed on separate blankets."
"We did, but last night it was so cold you were shivering in your sleep."
"Oh," I chuckled then snorted, "That wasn't cold," as some of the erotic images from the night before came to mind.
Ash gasped, "Ohhhh. Did somebody have a naughty dream? If you have another, can you tell me, I would hate to miss it," He breathed against the back of my neck.
I lightly tapped his leg, playfully.
"Oh, is that how it is," he said as he wrapped one arm around my middle and proceeded to tickle me.
I tried to get away, but I couldn't. I realized that he isn't just thin, he's a wiry fucker. The more I tried to get away, the tighter and better his grip got, and the more he tickled.
"Give up," He laughed.
"No," I gasped in between peals of laughter.
"You better give up or I will tickle you til ya piss the bed," he laughed as he tickled me.
Breathlessly, I said, "I yield."
"Good," Ash smiled and pulled me close as I tried to scoot away, effectively turning me to face him. "I love the way you laugh," he said softly.
"Really," I whispered.
"Mmhmm. It's real."
From where I was next to him I fake laughed, "Mwahahaha!"
"Now that was on purpose," he laughed as he pulled me closer.
I found myself held against his chest and him looking at me like he had just noticed me. "You ok?"
"Yeah," he said softly as he shoved his left hand under his head and pillow and held on with his right. "If I tell ya somethin' can you not think I am crazy?"
"Crazy shit happens all the time," I whispered.
He looked at me for a moment before he said, "I think there was a reason for me to be here that has nothing to do with the storm. I-I umm-I think a higher power sent me here."
"Crazy love?"
"I don't know about that," he sighed, "But being here there is a feeling I can't quite place. Holding you, like this, there is something I have never felt before."
"Not even once?"
"Nope. Completely new to me."
"Does it bother you?"
Ash looked thoughtful for a moment, "Naw. Kinda like it."
"Sweetness! I'll be back in a minute," I said as I started to pull away.
"Where you goin', Mama," he asked as he held on.
"To the bathroom before I piss the bed."
Rolling his eyes, he replied, "Oh. Well in that case," and let go.
I could hear him laughing as I left the room.
