Chapter 5-Spotlight.
I see you. It was just a coincidence. Robert can’t have realised the effect of those words when used in anger on the unseen assailant. Can’t have realised that he had just used those same words in tenderness moments before. This new found fear of him was just silly. Darren tried to recapture the pleasure of that brief kiss but instead a feeling of dread came over him. The kind he got when he knew he had to return home to his father. He knew dread well, and he knew to trust it.
No! He had to get this out of his head. He was just nervous that was all. Nervous that Robert would be upset he’d left like that. There was only one thing to do. Go to the auditions and show Robert that he was still the same person. The same person that Robert had kissed so softly. He sighed remembering the tingle in his lips, the dread forgotten. Almost.
*~*~*
Robert was furious when Darren had run off like that. Getting him all worked up and leaving him to sort it out himself and all because of that brat Daniel. Well he’d show him. Yeah he’d enjoy that.
He walked down the hallway a righteous anger smouldering in his belly as he thought up revenge. Well this would just mean another tactic that’s all. He could still recover from this setback. He could still have Darren. As he thought the boy’s name he came into view. Head down as he walked, hiding amongst the crowd. The way Robert liked it.
“I see you.” He whispered in the boy’s ear. Darren looked up a mixture of fear and disgust on his face. For a moment Robert was confused, almost flustered. This wouldn’t do. He had to say something to make the boy sweet or he’d lose him. “I’m sorry about last night, I mean if I scared you. I’m sorry that I kissed you. I had no right to do that.” A saddened look dawned on Darren’s face and Robert knew he had him. “I mean I wanted to but I…” He put a pained expression on his face ever the actor and sneaked a look at Darren's reaction.
“I wanted you to do it! I just got so confused and then the window…I shouldn’t have just left like that.” Darren’s voice bordered on the edge of hysteri his his attempt to make Robert understand. He can barely hide how much he wants me. Robert thought smugly.
“I’m so glad you said that, Darren! If only those neighbourhood brats hadn’t smashed the window when they did…look we can’t talk here. What about tonight? Maybe after the auditions? You’re still helping me aren’t you?” He rubbed Darren’s arm gently. Of cOf course! Yeah sure! See you then.” Darren practically bolted away from the teacher.
He was a strange one all right, but he’d be worth it in the long run. Oh yes.
“Hello, Sir, remember me?” Daniel appeared at his side, emerald eyes filled with hate. “Did I ruin your plans last night, Sir?”
“You little shit!” Robert struggled to control his anger. “When I’m finished with you you’d wish you’d died. And you know what? Nobody would notice if you did.” He spat the words out, waiting for the impact of them to wound the boy. But no wound appeared, just a slow easy smile. Robert felt unsure of himself for the second time that day, he even felt a slight twinge of fear as the boy stepped towards him.
“Sir, with all due respect. Fuck you.” Daniel smiled, a new confidence seeming to emanate from him. With that he walked away.
*~*~*
Darren couldn’t believe how much he wanted to get away from Robert. He’d tried to convince himself it was all in his head but he knew now to trust his instincts. The controlled calculated way Robert had tried to manipulate Darren just now played over and over in his head. The fake smiles, the doe eyed looks of regret, the sleazy feel of his hand on his arm. All Darren had wanted to do was run, he knew he had little evidence that there was something wrong with Robert but he just knew to trust that feeling of dread from this morning. Shivering he hugged himself and tried to shake it away, but it remained.
*~*~*
Oh God Oh God Oh God Daniel thought over and over in his mind three hours later. His heart raced, his palms sweated, his mouth was dry but most of all he felt alive. He felt like he existed, that he mattered. It was the most wonderful feeling he had ever felt. I owe it you, Darren. He thought entering the gymnasium. He’d stood up to Robert, he’d exposed himself for a brief moment of time but that was just a taster. He had to let the curtains fall away entirely.
He stepped towards the table, trying not to meet anyone’s eyes. “I’m here to erm…audition…for “The Importance of Being Earnest.” The character of John? I mean Jack. Well I guess it’s just Earnest. I mean I…I’m Daniel“
Oh God! Darren was there, looking at him. Right at him! He couldn’t lose his nerve now. He had to do this. Out the corner of his eye he saw Robert bristle.
“No, thank you. We’re looking for someone with a bit more confidence. Next.” Robert stared at him coolly but Daniel saw the bead of sweat that ran down his face. He felt a surge of power surge through him.
“All the same I deserve the chance. Sir”
“You’re right on every name so don’t worry.” Daniel blinked, shocked as Darren spoke softly. “I think he should audition, he has as much right as anyone else.” Darren shot an almost annoyed look at Robert.
“That sounds wonderful” Miss Arnold exclaimed on cue.
“Okay, if you want to begin…Daniel?” Darren’s lips uttering his name inflamed every sensory cell in Daniel’s body. “I’ll be Gwendolyn for this scene.”
Without even a moment of hesitation Daniel began. He didn’t see that some students passing by had stopped to watch, he didn’t hear the “who’s that?” and the “he’s pretty hot” comments that floated around him. All he knew was that he had to do this for Darren. To make him see him.
As he finished he was shocked out of his daze by the clapping that filled the gym. Instantly he took in the smiling faces, the scowl of Robert, the “that was wonderful” of Miss Arnold and concentrated on Darren’s face. “Was that okay?”
“That was amazing!” His voice dripped with warmth. “I mean really amazing! It’s hard to make Jack the funnier character in that scene but you totall…” Darren trailed off and looked embarrassed at his excitement. “I thinu shu should be John er…Jack I mean Earnest,” he laughed “That IS hard.”
“I don’t think he’s the best we’ve seen today. Not by a long shot, in fact pretty amateurish really.” Robert glared from Darren to Daniel, a look of anger etched deeply into his face.
“How can you say that? He was brilliant!” As he spoke tiny red spots of anger coloured Darren’s cheeks.
“What would you know about talent?” Robert sneered, then looked shocked at his slip. “I mean, you’re inexperienced you wouldn’t know the difference.”
“I believe, Mr Cannvale that there are three of us. I vote yes, you vote no-Miss Arnold?”
“I thought he was wonderful!”
“Two to one, sir.” Darren spoke forcefully not even aware of the confidence that supported his words.
“Thank you, very much. I won’t let you down.” Daniel walked away his heart enclosed in his throat. He’d done it! The looks Darren had shot Robert were nothing but hostile, he’d saved Darren. But whom had he saved him for? Did he dare hope?
He look back towards the table his eyes finding sapphire, he gave a small wave and watched as he received one back.
Hope?
