"Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table,
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe... just breathe."

Carrie took a deep breath before turning the corner in the hall. She hadn't heard from the Texan in a couple of days, and she hadn't been back to the hospital since they had found out the news, but she knew if she didn't go see Alex, she'd end up regretting it for a very long time.
She had to admit, she wasn't surprised in the least to see Jason standing outside of Alex's door protectively.
"Hey," Carrie gave a small smile.
"Hey," he smiled back. "How you been?"
She just shrugged, slipping her hands into her pockets.
"I haven't seen you around lately," he commented.
"I hate seeing her like this," Carrie nodded towards the door. "It's not fair. She's just normally so...this isn't right."
"Which one are you talking about?" Jason asked curiously.
Carrie's eyes fell to the floor as she scuffed it with the toe of her shoe, "Both, I guess."
"I know what you mean," he nodded, sighing. "You think she'll get better?"
"Alex?"
"Can Kelly get better if she doesn't?," he frowned.
"I sure as hell hope so."
Jason raised an eyebrow.
"The doctors seem pretty set about this. She doesn't have long," Carrie shook her head.
"She thinks it's her fault," he commented, leaning back against the door.
"How could she think that?"
"It's how she is."
Carrie frowned, running a hand through her hair.
"Alex is a great kid, you know?"
"I know."
"And she means the world to Kelly."
"I know," Carrie nodded, clenching her jaw tightly to fight back the tears.
Jason smiled sadly, "Why don't you go in there? Tell Kelly to take a break?"
"She's not going to listen to me."
"Yea, well, it's either you try or she's going to end up passing out from exhaustion. She hasn't slept in days, and she's hardly eaten a thing."
"Alright," Carrie swallowed hard. "I'll try."
Jason gave her a thankful look as he opened the door, letting her slip inside before closing it behind her.
Carrie felt her heart break at the sight of her fellow Idol curled up in a chair right next to the bed, her chin resting on the mattress, her hand holding onto the small child's, rubbing it soothingly with her thumb.
"Kell?" she said softly.
Kelly sat up and turned around, giving her a small nod before going back to her original position.
"How is she?" Carrie asked, walking up behind her, glancing at the sleeping girl worriedly.
"She's definitely had better days," she replied flatly.
Carrie frowned, walking around the chair and kneeling in front of the Texan. She took Kelly's free hand in between both of her own, "Kell?"
Kelly looked at her, and Carrie's heart broke even further at the dark rings under her tired eyes.
"You need some rest sweetie," Carrie said gently.
"I'm not tired."
"Well, how about some food? Look, if you want I can bring you somewhere. I'm sure Jason will stay right here with her if you asked him to. Please?"
Kelly shook her head, looking back at Alex, watching her tiny chest rising and falling slowly with each breath.
"Kelly, please. If not for yourself, then do it for Alex. Her seeing you like this isn't going to help her at all. She needs for you to be strong for her, and you can't do that on no sleep and an empty stomach."
Kelly's eyes fell to the floor, and Carrie sighed, holding onto her hand tightly and bringing it up to her lips, kissing her knuckles.
"At least some coffee?" Carrie asked. "Maybe go stretch your legs for a bit? I'll stay right here with her, I swear, and I'll call you immediately if she wakes."
"Ok," she murmured.
Carrie smiled as she stood with the shorter girl, letting go of her hand as she walked out of the room. Carrie carefully sat down in her chair. She watched Alex carefully, not knowing what to do, whether she should talk to her or what. She bit down hard on her bottom lip, feeling herself sinking down into all of the emotions surrounding her from the past few days.
"Hey there munchkin," Carrie sighed, holding on to the small child's hand much like Kelly had. "Now, I know you haven't known me as long as Kelly, so you may not trust me as much as her, but I need you to do me a favor, alright? I need you to get better. Not for me. For Kelly." Carrie took a shaky breath as warm tears started to form in the corners of her eyes. "You see, our girl's not doing too good right now. She's taking this pretty hard, and I know if you could only see her, you'd do anything to change it. She's blaming herself," Carrie shook her head as the tears started to fall. "And if you don't get better, then she'll never be able to show you Texas, and I know that's going to kill her. She'll feel as if she failed you somehow, and you and I both know that is ridiculous, but she just doesn't see that. So...I need you to fight like hell, ok? Please, just do this one last thing for her cause I really don't think she can take anymore heartache. She's had way too much lately, and I'm afraid if this keeps up..."
Carrie closed her eyes as more tears formed, "Please God..."
