Chapter 53
Saturday - late morning
********************
James was woken by something rough and wet rubbing against his ear. It wasn’t David’s usual method of rousing him… It wasn’t David’s tongue either…
He opened his eyes to see a ginger and white tail swoosh in front of his face. David’s side of the bed was empty.
“Prrrrrrrrp!” Ginger chirped by way of a greeting.
“Hey, Ginger,” James replied, rubbing the cat behind the ear and then stroking him under the chin. “It’s just you and me then, is it? Everyone else gone out?”
He sat up and continued to pet the cat. As he did so he noticed for the first time the ring on his left hand.
“Well, what have we here, Ginger?” he said as he examined the ring. It looked like a fraternity ring of some kind. It had to be David’s but what was it doing on his finger? “Hmm, it’s a mystery. I don’t ’spose you can tell me how it got there, Ginger? No, I thought not…”
He reached for his watch to see what time it was. Nearly eleven. David must have left hours ago.
As he put his watch back on the nightstand a piece of paper fluttered to the floor. He reached down to pick it up. It was a note, addressed to him from David. He recognised the handwriting immediately.
“Mind you, has to be fromid did doesn’t it, Ginger, unless you can write?”
He laughed when he saw the smiley face David had drawn under his name along with the words: Don’t panic. It was obvious David hadn’t wanted to alarm him knowing he’d be waking up alone today.
He opened the note and read, “Just something to remind you I’m yours in case you forget. Love, David. PS Ginger has agreed to keep you company until I get back. Tell him from me there’ll be no dinner tonight if he fails to make good on the deal. PPS If Mom asks about the ring, tell her we got engaged in the night. PPPS I love you.”
James laughed.
“Silly idiot!” he exclaimed.
Ginger cautiously moved away from him.
“No, not you, Booful. Come here…”
He picked Ginger up and held him against his chest.
“Come and have a cuddle… You’re a booful pusscat, aren’t you? Oh!”
At that moment James was surprised to see another ginger cat jump onto the bed.
“… and so are you.”
This one was much darker in colour with black markings on his face and black socks.
“Looks like we’ve got company, Ginger. Aren’t you going to introduce me?”
The other cat had climbed onto his lap and was purring loudly.
“Hey there, Marmaduke,” James said, reaching out to pet the new arrival.
Marmaduke licked his hand.
Suddenly they both turned to look at the door, leaped off the bed and dived through the catflap.
“Oh, well. Come back soon, won’t you?” James called after them.
He guessed they’d gone in search of food. They were both neutered so what else was there to do apart from eat and sleep? Talking of eating he was feeling kinda hungry himself. Odd, considering how much he’d eaten yesterday. Or, maybe that was why he was hungry - his stomach had stretched.
******************
Fifteen minutes later, James was making his way downstairs when he met Ginger on his way up. Ginger stopped to rub around his legs. James bent to pick him up and carried him down the stairs.
“Didn’t you find anything to eat, Ginge? Wanna come with me to get breakfast?”
“Oh, James, it’s you,” Patti said, appearing in the hall. “I thought I heard voices. Good morning, Sweetie.”
“Morning, Patti,” he replied. “Ginger was just telling me how he hadn’t had anything to eat yet this morning, not that I believed him mind…”
Patti laughed.
“I’ve just given them both their breakfast,” she said. “It was a bit later than usual today, I’m afraid. What with cooking pancakes and seeing the children both ate something hot before going outside - it’s bitter cold this morning. Oh, I’ve just remembered. I didn’t give of of you your presents last night. Oh, dear! Follow me, Sweetie…”
She was heading toward the studio. He hesitated.
“It’s all right; the dogs aren’t here. David took them…”
James followed her into the studio where she presented him with a brightly coloured carrier bag.
“I hope you like it,” she said, “But even if you don’t, you might find it useful today…”
James put Ginger down on the floor and took the bag from her and peered inside.
“I meant to give it to you last night, James. My mind is like a sieve these days. It must be my age. I forgot to feed the cats this morning too. It’s funny, though, Ginger usually comes to remind me if I forget…”
“Ah, I think I can explain that,” James said, as he removed the contents of the bag. “He was with me… Oh, this is gorgeous, Patti. You shouldn’t have…”
“Are you sure? I won’t be offended if it’s not your style…”
“It’s lovely. Really…” he said, holding the sweater up to get a better look at it. “I’ll go put it on in a minute. It should fit me better than this,” he added, gesturing to the sweatshirt he’d borrowed from David’s wardrobe this morning.
He leaned toward her and kissed her on the cheek.
“Thank you.”
“I’m glad you like it but watch out for the cats, though, or it’ll be covered in fur…” Patti said. “Have you noticed how they always seem to shed dark hairs on light clothing and white ones on dark?”
“Yes, you’re right…” James replied with a chuckle. “I woke up to find Ginger on David’s pillow,” he said, continuing his story. “I guess he’s used to sleeping on the bed…”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Sweetie. That’s my fault. I thought I’d shut the catflap. I must have forgotten…”
“No, it wasn’t you. David left me a note… He put him on the bed so I wouldn’t wake up alone. He can be so sweet… I love cats. Used to have one myself. Big, grey brute of a thing. He’d have your arm off soon as look at you but he had his gentle moments too. Usedsleesleep on my bed.”
“What happened to him, Sweetie?”
“He died a few months back - of old age. I found him dead on the kitchen floor one morning…”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Sweetie. I know how upsetting it is to lose a pet. It’s like losing one of the family when they go…”
“Too right… I’d been thinking of getting another one but…”
“You were afraid he’d leave you too?”
“Yeah,” he replied.
“You know what they say, Sweetie? It’s better to have loved and lost…” she began.
“… than never to have loved at all,” he finished. “You’re right again - as always.”
“Come on, Sweetie. Let’s get you some breakfast and you can tell me all about him. What was his name?”
“Zachary,” James said. “I have a picture of him, if you’d like to see it?”
******************
“I meant what I said earlier, Son,” Dav fat father said to him as they waited by the stream for the others to catch up. Bo didn’t want to take a chance with the children crossing where David and his father had done so she and Jon had led the children to the bridge upstream.
“…about the house,” David’s father continued.
“I know you did, Dad, and don’t think I’m not grateful…”
“But?”
“I’m not sure how James will react, either to getting a house or to you effectively lending us the money. It’s not something we’ve ever discussed.”
Well, not seriously anyway. They’d fantasised together about the day when they might be able to afford a place of their own. Neither had imagined it would be anytime soon though.
“I don’an tan to pry, Son, but I had the distinct impression James was - what was that phrase your mother used - the love of your life. You’re serious about this relationship, aren’t you, Son?”
“Yes, Dad. I couldn’t be more so.”
“Then James isn’t just a boyfriend. He’s more what you’d call a life partner?”
David laughed.
“Yeah, I guess that’s what they call it. I hadn’t really thought about how we’re going to refer to ourselves when we go public.”
“So, you’re like a married couple.”
“Yeah, I guess we are.”
“In that case, we can call the house a wedding present.”
He was serious. He really was. He wanted to give them a wedding present!
“Oh, Dad, that’s too precious. Have I told you lately just how much I love you?”
