Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday to you
Happy birthday, dear Emilia
Meg and Jessica Nigri, having promised Emilia they’d sing for her on her birthday, showed up to her bedroom door late one night to deliver on their word. They brought Ella with them, too. Ella’s sister has a woman crush on Emilia, but since Ella’s sister wasn’t there, Ella celebrated on her behalf.
Happy birthday to yooooooooooooooooooooooooooou.
They also brought Florence. Meg and Jessica found photos online of Emilia attending a Florence + the Machine concert. So having two women who could actually sing made the gesture a lot easier. Ella stood between the two women; Florence hid behind the wall next to Emilia’s door then stepped out to sing the last line. Emilia covered her smile with her hand as Florence sang, too thrilled to mind waiting for Florence to finish holding a note.
“Thank you guys so much,” she said, her hand now pressed over her heart.
Meg and Jessica gave Ella and Florence a cue to leave. They had said they only needed them for the song anyway. Ella and Florence promptly headed off to do their own thing.
“Thank you for making our D&D sessions more fun,” Meg smiled at Emilia.
Emilia smirked, leaned against the door frame with her arms crossed in front of her, and gave a single proud nod.
“You’re welcome. It’s what I do best.”
Good evening, everyone. This is your Captain speaking.
There was a loudspeaker installed on every floor of the dorms connected to a microphone on the podium in the lobby, which was used in the event that something urgent had to be discussed.
Please come down to the lobby in five minutes. I have a major announcement to make that I need to discuss with all of you in person. Thank you.
Captain’s voice sounded reserved but contained a hint of urgency. Even if the women had a choice, Captain didn’t make announcements like this often.
When each woman appeared in the lobby, they saw an almost somber Captain, standing nervously, cradling a sleeping Charlotte in his arms. He was presumably trying to calm himself down, but Madalina and Gordon knew as they each sat in an armchair, watching him rub Charlotte’s back and gently kiss the top of her head, that it was little more than a temporary solution at best. All the women finally took their seats, and Captain handed Charlotte to Madalina before addressed the crowd.
“Ladies,” Captain clasped his hands together. “I’m sure you’ve either seen or heard me talk about these . . . figures. If you’re one of the newer residents, imagine a place that’s like Hell if it were created by a Lovecraft fan. These figures are in charge of that place, and they approached me with a deal.”
Raven and Taylor, having already interacted with these figures firsthand, feared the worst. Captain caught a glimpse of Raven holding Daniela’s arm while Tori wrapped her arm around Taylor. It was like watching live election results.
“They bring us clients and financial support, and you give them your services. We’ll still have human benefactors, but they can’t have priority over the new clients.”
Raven raised her hand and asked “Where would they even get money?”
Captain paused, it not having occurred to him to ask that question himself.
“I haven’t responded to their offer yet, but I will be sure to ask.”
“Wait,” Tori chimed in, “if you haven’t accepted their deal, then why are you telling us about it now?”
Captain explained that he wasn’t going to make a decision affecting the women without their involvement. Whatever answer he gave, he could at least take solace in the knowledge that it was what the women preferred.
“If anyone thinks I should decline this offer,” he continued, “please say so.”
Silence.
Pairs of eyes glancing around the room.
What couldn’t have taken more than one minute felt like an eternity.
Captain expected maybe one particularly adventurous woman to be on board with the offered deal, but not two, and certainly not all 56 of them.
“You can take the deal.”
Everyone turned to look at Emily Ratajkowski as she stood up to speak. No one was more baffled by this reaction than Captain.
“A-are you sure, Emily? If anyone would have issue with th-”
“Normally, I would,” she said, her fingers pressed against each other. “But through all the decisions you’ve ever made, our security and well-being was always your top priority. I trust that wouldn’t change if you accepted this deal.”
Captain shook his head.
“Of course not. That will always matter. But, uh, does anyone think I should decline? Or how about this? If anyone agrees with Emily, stand up.”
A few seconds passed.
All of the women stood up.
Captain was completely taken by surprise. He looked over at Madalina, who also stood up, still holding a sleeping Charlotte. Even Gordon was standing up, and he gave Captain a silent affirming nod.
Though still stunned, Captain authoritatively addressed the women.
“Thank you. You can go get some sleep now.”
The assembly was adjourned. The women took either the stairs or the elevator back to their rooms. Gordon patted Captain on the back as he walked past him. Madalina walked over to Captain with Charlotte in her arms and a look in her eye that Captain always loved to see. The two adults kissed before making their way to bed.
