Chapter 55
Saturday - lunchtime
*********************
“Oh, look!” Patti exclaimed, pointing out of the window across the meadow. “Here they come.”
James stopped stirring the soup for a moment and moved to look out of the window. Two horses were heading toward the house. One of the riders was clearly David. He guessed the other was Beth. He was no expert but they appeared to be riding at a gallop.
“Are they racing?” he asked.
“More than likely, James. I’m afraid those two never stop… Excuse me but I can’t watch when they ride that fast. I’m always afraid one of them is going to fall. I’ll be in the dining room, setting the table for lunch.”
“Can I do anything to help?” James asked.
“Just keep an eye on the soup for me, Sweetie. I won’t be long.”
James gave the soup another quick stir before turning his attention back to the window. David’s horse was just ahead by a nose but as he continued to watch, Beth’s horse suddenly slowed and turned and then continued at full speed toward the fence which separated the back yard from the meadow. She cleared the fence easily and trotted up to the back porch. David arrived about thirty seconds later having taken the longer route to the open gate by the barn.
Beth dismounted and waved at David.
“I won!” she called, loud enough that James could hear her clearly from inside the kitchen. “You get to take care of Hera as well as Apollo.”
She dropped Hera’s reins and strolled toward the back door.
“Beth, wait!” David yelled as he trotted up to the house. “Don’t open the door!”
It was too late. She already had.
“Fritz, come here!” James heard David cry out as the smaller of the two dogs hurtled into the kitchen, cornering James by the sink.
There was no escape, nowhere to run to. He stood completely still hoping the dog would ignore him. It didn’t. Its paws were on his knees, the dog’s mouth inches from his crotch. He began to feel light-headed.
********************
“James!” David gasped as he came into the kitchen and found Fritz wagging his tail furiously as he tried his best to get James’ attention.
“What’s the matter?” Beth asked. “Fritz won’t hurt you. Just push him away.”
James was frozen to the spot. He couldn’t move a muscle.
“Beth, take care of the horses!” David cried as he rushed to James’ aid.
Beth didn’t move.
“Now!” David yelled at her.
“All right. There’s no need to shout,” she said, turning on her heel and stomping out.
David was about to call Fritz to heel when Bertha rushed straight past him, heading for James.
“David, please! Call them off,” James begged.
“Bertha, heel!”
Bertha stopped dead in her tracks.
Poor James was obviously terrified.
“Fritz, down!” David yelled as he grabbed Bertha’s collar.
********************
Much to James’s surprise and relief, Fritz backed off and sat on his hindquarters as if waiting for the next instruction.
“I’m so sorry, Baby,” David was saying, “I didn’t mean to let them in until I knew where you were. If that damned sister of mine wasn’t so devious I’d have got to you first…”
David grabbed Fritz with his other hand.
“What’s all the noise about?” Patti asked as she dashed into the kitchen from the hall.
“Beth let the dogs into the kitchen before I could stop her,” David explained. “I’ll put them both in the studio,” he said. “Then I’ll be back.”
As James watched David lead the two dogs out of the kitchen he breathed a sigh of relief. He still couldn’t move though. His legs wouldn’t work and what was happening to his eyes?
“Oh, Sweetie!” Patti exclaimed. “Let me help you to sit down before you fall down.”
James felt her hand on his arm and then he blacked out.
*****************
“David! David!” David could hear Patti shouting all the way from the studio.
David shut the dogs in and hurried back to the kitchen, skidding on the tiles in his haste to reach James.
“He’s fainted,” she said, hanging onto James’ shoulders.
“Shit!” David exclaimed, dodging around the table to get to James who was sitting on the floor, his back against the cupboard beneath the window, his head bent forward.
“Baby!” David cried, kneeling down on his other side.
“He started to go before I could get him to sit on a chair,” she added.
“Urrr…” James groaned.
“He’s coming round,” Patti said. “You hold him. I’ll get him some water.”
She stood up and grabbed a clean tea towel from a drawer and held it under the cold tap. David took it from her and placed it on James’ forehead while she fetched some water from the fridge.
“James, Baby, can you hear me?” David asked.
“David?” James whispered as he opened his eyes. “What happened?”
“You fainted, Sweetie,” Patti said, kneeling down beside him again. “Water?”
“Thanks,” he said taking the plastic cup from han hand.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured.
“It’s all right, Sweetie. You haven’t done anything wrong…”
“No, Beth’s the idiot who let them in,” David began. “I called to her to stop but, as usual, she thought she knew best…”
“David! Not now,” Patti scolded. “Why don’t you help James to stand up while I check where the children are.”
She got to her feet and looked out of the window.
“Oh, they’re already here,” she said. “I’m sorry, James. You’re going to have company.”
“Can you stand up, Baby?” David asked.
“Not sure.”
James tried to get up but it was obvious he wasn’t going to make it.
David looked up as the back door opened again and Lizzie came rushing in.
“Grandma!” Lizzie squealed as she ran to Patti who picked her up.
“Ooo, I think we’d better get those boots off before you go any further,” Patti said. “Did you jump in every puddle between here and the stable?”
Davy had stopped to take his off in the back porch.
“Davy made me do it,” she said as Patti helped her out of the muddy boots.
“Why is Uncle James sitting on the floor?” she asked, spotting James for the first time.
James sipped the water he was still holding.
“Uncle James isn’t feeling well, Darling,” Patti said.
“Ooo, are you going to hurl?” Davy asked excitedly as he joined the group. “Can I watch?”
David laughed.
“I don’t think so,” James said, suppressing a smile of his own.
“You’re no fun,” Davy complained.
“Now be a good boy and leave him alone,” Patti said. “Why don’t you go upstairs. You’ve time to reach the next level in that game of yours before lunch.”
“Ooo, can I?”
“Yes, Darling, and take Lizzie with you.”
“I hope you feel better soon, Uncle James,” Lizzie said over her shoulder as Davy led her into the hall.
“What’s going on?” Bo asked as she came into the kitchen carrying her boots. “Has something happened?”
“You could say that,” David said, helping James to stand. “Beth let the dogs in…”
“Oh, no!” she said. “Oh, James, are you hurt?”
“Just my pride,” he said, smiling at her. “I passed out… I feel such an idiot…”
“Oh, don’t, Sweetie,” Patti said. “I’m the same with snakes… I break out into a cold sweat if I even see one on TV…”
David had managed to get James to a chair.
“I better check on the kids,” Bo said. “Take care of him, Davy. I’ll see you both later.”
“You should go and lie down, Sweetie,” Patti said.
“I’ll be all right if I can just sit for a minute,” James said.
“I could carry you to the couch in the den,” David said.
“And make me look even more pathetic?” James chuckled.
“Your secret is safe with me, Sweetie,” Patti said. “Let David help you. I’ll bring you a pick-me-up as soon as I’ve cleaned up the mud everyone’s trampled into the kitchen.”
“Oh, sorry, Mom,” David said, sitting down to remove his own boots.
James stood up and took a couple of steps. On the third step he wobbled slightly and reached for David’s arm.
David managed to catch him before he collapsed again, picked him up and carried him into the hall. The door of the den was ajar. He pushed it open with his foot and carried James inside, carefully depositing him on the couch.
“Thanks,” James said. “I’m sorry to be so much trouble…”
“It’s not your fault, Baby,” David said, kneeling on the floor beside him. “If only I’d got there first…”
“Don’t blame Beth, David. She probably doesn’t even know I’m afraid of dogs…”
“Maybe not but she should have listened when I told her not to open the door. If she hadn’t che…”
…”
“What were the rules of the race?” James enquired.
“First to the back porch wins,” David said.
“So, nothing about the route you had to follow?”
“Well, no, but she knew which way I was headed.”
“So, she out-smarted you then,” James said. “I think she won fair and square, Davy. You’re gonna have to let this one go… Remember what we talked about last night?”
“Hmph!”
David couldn’t fault his logic but it still irritated the Hell out of him that Beth’d managed to beat him and scared James shitless in the process.
“Promise me you won’t have a row with her?”
David didn’t answer.
“Please, Davy?”
“Okay, but only because you asked me not to, not because she doesn’t deserve it…”
