"What hurts the most
Is being so close,
And having so much to say
And watching you walk away."

Kelly stretched as she woke up, smiling briefly at the feeling of waking up in Carrie's arms once more. She left a gentle kiss on her neck--a sign of thanks--before rolling out of her arms. She sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing her eyes tiredly. Physically, she was fine, having slept solidly for the first time in days. But emotionally, she was completely drained.
Kelly felt Carrie's warm hand slip under her shirt, rubbing her back, helping her to relax. She groaned in satisfaction at the touch.
"Care?"
"Hmm?" Carrie asked tiredly as she sat up, sliding right behind her, her legs on either side of the Texan's. She knew she was pushing her luck as she wrapped her arms around her waist, holding her close, but she could tell from the way that Kelly was leaning into her touch that she was enjoying the embrace just as much as Carrie was. Carrie rested her cheek against Kelly's shoulder, kissing the crook of her neck softly.
"I don't know what I'd do without you."
"We've been through this before, haven't we?" Carrie asked carefully. She didn't want to ruin the moment. She knew once the shorter girl was fully awake, she would become closed off once again. Although, she had to admit that since they had picked up Alex, Kelly had seemed sincerely happy and open, but she knew better than to believe that. She knew Kelly was using this week to escape everything that was going on and not have to deal with the truth, and honestly, she didn't care. She knew it would only mean Kelly would hurt more after this was over, but as long as she got these brief moments with her where she started to let her guard down, she was ok with that. If that was selfish, then so be it.
"But you always seem to know exactly what I need you to say and what I need you to do."
"Luck," Carrie replied simply, wrapping her arms tighter, kissing the top of her shoulder.
"You know I love you, right?" Kelly asked. "I mean, you're one of my closest friends, and I'd do anything for you Care, I swear I would."
Carrie nodded, "You too."
"Thanks," Kelly gave a small smile, touching their heads together briefly before standing up, pulling out of the embrace. "I'm gonna go check on breakfast."
Carrie nodded, watching as she walked out of the room. And just like that, the moment was gone.

"Im invisibly shaken
And quietly breakin
Desperately takin one breath at a time."

Alex came walking into the dining room slowly, rubbing her eyes cutely, the doctor right behind her.
"Aw," Kelly smiled from her seat at the table where Carrie, Jason, and Ashley were already seated. "Good morning sleepy head."
Alex grumbled as she walked to the Texan. Kelly picked her up, placing her on her lap.
"You didn't want to sleep longer?" Kelly asked, adjusting her bandana that was slipping and covering her eyes.
"She woke me up," Alex frowned, eyeing the doctor.
Kelly looked at Dr. Lansing confusedly, "I thought we were supposed to let her sleep as much as she wanted?"
"Yes, but she needs to take her medicine, and she can't do that without food in her stomach," Dr. Lansing explained.
Kelly nodded, turning back to Alex, "So how about some breakfast then, huh? Ashley's a great cook, and I'm sure Carrie would be glad to fix you a plate."
"Of course," Carrie smiled. "What do you think you want on it?"
"I'm not hungry," Alex mumbled, wrapping her arms around Kelly's neck, and burying her face there.
Kelly frowned, rubbing the small child's back, "But you have to eat sweetie."
"No," Alex fussed.
"Alex," Kelly said, trying not to be too stern, but needing her to listen.
Alex pulled back, tears swimming in her tired eyes.
Kelly's heart melted as she brought a hand up, wiping the tears away, "I know you're tired my girl, but you've got to eat a little something, ok? For me?"
Alex bit her bottom lip.
"How about some scrambled eggs and a biscuit. That's it."
She nodded, sniffing.
Kelly looked up at Carrie hopefully, who nodded as she stood to go fix Alex a plate.

"Are you sure you've had enough?" Kelly asked, frowning at the plate. Alex had barely eaten half the biscuit and only a couple of bites of eggs.
Alex nodded, wrapping her arms around Kelly once more, clinging to her.
"Alright," Kelly sighed. "How about we bring you back upstairs so Dr. Lansing can give you your medicine, and you can go back to sleep, ok?"
Alex nodded once more, so Kelly stood carefully, following the doctor back up to the guest room she had placed Alex in the night before. She carefully put her down on the bed as Dr. Lansing dug through her stuff, taking out several bottles of pills. Kelly's eyes widened.
"That's a lot more than normal."
Dr. Lansing nodded, "With increased illness and pain there usually is an increase in medicine, yes."
Kelly frowned, not liking the sarcastic tone she was receiving, but deciding not to mention it in front of Alex. She watched as one by one Alex swallowed each dose of medicine as if she'd been doing it her entire life. Kelly felt her stomach turn. She stepped to the bed when she was finished, pulling the covers up around her.
"You get some more sleep, ok?" Kelly smiled softly, squeezing her hand. "You need to be rested and happy later if you want to go outside."
Alex nodded, her eyes already closing as Kelly bent down, kissing her forehead gently. She waited until the tiny girl was completely asleep before exiting the room, leaving the door open so she could hear if Alex woke.
She walked down the stairs, collapsing on the sofa next to Jason. He smiled softly, squeezing her knee as she rested her head on his shoulder.
"She's not usually that irritable," Carrie commented from the recliner she was stretched out in.
"No," Kelly shook her head, sitting up. "But Dr. Lopez warned that that would happen from time to time. She's really in a lot of pain right now, and the medicine helps, but not completely, plus it makes her drowsy, and I mean, she's just a little kid, you know? I'd be a hell of a lot fussier if I were going through that at her age."
"Yea," Carrie agreed.
"So, what I've got this morning?" Kelly asked, turning to Jason.
"A couple call-in interviews. One for a magazine, and one for a radio show."
Kelly nodded, "Alright, just give me the numbers, and I'll go do them in my room, so I can hear if Alex needs something."
