Chapter 56 – Misconceptions Revealed
Raven, Vin, and Chris stood in the corridor watching as Eric disappeared into the elevator.
“What was that about?” Chris questioned. “What did he mean…bring us up to speed?” “What’s happening Rae?”
“Come ‘ere babe” she said motioning to a bank of chairs in the hallway; “sit with me.”
“Rae you’re scaring me, what’s going on?”
“Eric has talked to his father…Hehaka Naji says that Craig is getting weaker”; at that statement Vin cut in, “How can Eric’s father possibly know anything about what’s going on with Craig, he’s all the way back in South Dakota…what’s he got, a crystal ball?” he said sarcastically.
Raven glared at Vin and was just about to speak when Chris interjected…“Look, don’t you two start going at it again, this is not about you, either of you!” “And to answer your question Popi…yes, in a manner of speaking he does have a ‘crystal ball’. “I know that it may not make sense to you or to anyone else who doesn’t know him, or who doesn’t understand the culture, but yes…he knows things, sees things – and unfortunately he’s seldom wrong.”
Vin couldn’t believe what he was hearing and challenged Chris’ assertion. “Chris you can’t really believe that” he started, but Raven interrupted him.
“Months before my mother got pregnant Standing Elk told her to stock up on blue paint, that she would need it soon.”
“That was just a lucky guess Raven, a married couple, come on, anybody could ‘predict’ a new baby.”
Then Chris spoke up again…”Could anyone predict 3 months before the mother even gets pregnant that she should buy double everything because she’s going to have twins?” “Could anyone know ahead of time that I would break my leg trying to ride a horse that hadn’t even been purchased yet?”
Then Raven added her voice; “Could someone know beyond a shadow of a doubt where two lost children, miles away, could be found?” “When no one had even been notified that they were missing?” “And tell me Vin, how does someone know the exact day and hour of another’s death…weeks before it happens?” “Over the years Standing Elk has seen and told us of all those things and dozens more, long before those things took place.” “If he says something is happening – then something is happening.”
“You really believe this don’t you?” Vin asked incredulously.
“Yes we do” came Chris’ almost whispered response.
Vin looked back and forth between the two siblings, he could see the look of desperation and fear in their eyes and he knew he had to do something to help.
“Then what do we need to do?”
Raven looked up astonished, she’d expected Vin to continue arguing with them, expected him to dismiss their feelings about Ric’s father, but instead he’d surprised her; here he was asking what they, all of them could do to help. Her face brightened as she answered.
“First we need to see if we can find a place to buy some dried sage.”
Then Chris spoke up again, “I’ll bet you Ric has some in his bags, he never goes anywhere without it.” Raven looked up at a confused Vin…
“He uses it when he prays, she said, “You light it and allow the smoke to flow over your body…it’s a cleansing ritual, helps to…”
She never got to finish her sentence; as they looked up an orderly and two nurses were entering Craig’s room. Rushing to her feet Raven approached the door and watched silently as they began preparing to move her brother. Looking up one of the nurses gave her a reassuring smile saying “We’re taking your brother to pre-op, the doctors are scrubbing in now...that’s some boyfriend you’ve got, really knows his stuff.”
“And he’s very persuasive, quipped the second, I don’t think I’ve ever see Dr. Millieux stand aside and take ‘second scalpel’ to anyone, and I’ve worked here for 15 years.” “Try not to worry, dear; your brother’s in good hands.”
Squaring her shoulders and standing up as straight as she could, Raven gave her a brief smile, “I know,” she said as she looked down at her tightly clasped hands, “I know….”

Six hours had passed, and Raven, Vin, and Chris were still sitting in the waiting room. What seemed like a continuous stream of doctors, nurses, patients and visitors filed silently past them going about their business. Some smiling, as they passed, some not; all seemingly focused on important things. Raven wondered whether any of them had gone through what she was going through, wondered if they knew. “Do they know how close he is to death?” she pondered as the strangers walked by, “Would they care if they did?” As Chris shifted again against her shoulder she was momentarily brought out of her musings and back to reality, she thought of the sage she’d burned in Craig’s room, of the prayers the three of them had sent up to whatever power or spirit would listen. She silently prayed again now, that someone had been listening, she prayed it with all of her being, just as she had prayed that Standing Elk would be successful in his quest...

The sweat lodge had been prepared and for the better part of the day Hehaka Naji had endured the inipi – (purification rite/sweat bath). He’d chanted and prayed and brought himself ever closer to the spirit realm. His two oldest sons had kept and ever watchful eye upon him as the two youngest kept vigil outside. It was not long before Aaron could see that his father’s posture had changed, the tension that had been present before was gone, his father had entered the spirit realm. All they could do now was wait, wait and hope that he would find Craig in time; find him and lead him away from the path of the dead before it was too late.
~~~
His feet seemed at once to find the path, and he was no longer inside the sweat lodge. He was walking…walking past familiar signposts and even more familiar spirits. The way was clearly marked, if you knew what to look for; but if you didn’t it was easy to become confused, lost – and then there were the spirits, not all of which were friendly or true. He checked his belt, and yes, he could see that his feathers, rattle and his pouch of healing stones were with him. If he could find Craig he would use the feathers and rattle to remove any blockages and stagnations of energy that may be contributing to his ill health. The sacred stones would be rubbed over the boys head to remove any further obstructions, then he could lead the boy out – back to the right path.
As he looked up ahead he could see wisps of smoke and shadow that he knew to be spirits; watching him, wondering why he sought to walk the wheel. As he moved closer to them they turned their faces away looking off into the distance as if they were telling him which way to go. He scrutinized them carefully, for he knew that “iktomi” - trickster spirits resided here as well; it would not do for him to come all this way, take this risk, and then allow himself to be fooled into going in the wrong direction.
He walked for what seemed to him to be hours, the going was harder than he remembered. He’d done this once before in his youth with a sick child, but he did not remember the path having so many obstacles. For a moment he wondered if perhaps Little Elk had not been right, perhaps this was a job for a younger man. No sooner had the thought entered his head than he shook it off; “No” he thought, “I can do this, I am not so old that I cannot take a short walk to find a lost child.”
He walked along the inner circle; the seven stones known as the foundation of all life. He passed Earth Mother, the stone that represents the one who protects and nurtures. He moved on until he found Father Sun, who gives warmth for light and growth. Continuing he found Grandmother Moon, and then the stones that represent the four elements of the earth, Butterfly Clan for Air, Thunderbird Clan for fire, Frog Clan for Water and Turtle Clan for Earth where he gainted insight, patience and tenacity. He lingered but a while with each, gathering what strength and wisdom he needed to complete his journey. It was then that he saw the boy, sitting near the Creator Stone, The Center of All Life; he called to the boy saying…
“Craig…come it is time son, it is time to go home.”
Perhaps the light was playing tricks with his eyes, but the boy seemed so small, so fragile and weak. Slowly he approached and as he did he removed his rattle from his belt and set to work. With small measured steps he began to dance, shaking the rattle and gently caressing the boy’s skin with the feather. He chanted and prayed, and as he did he could see the boy gradually begin to respond. The light in his eyes had almost disappeared by the time he came upon him, but now there was a glint, ever so slight, that seemed to begome brighter the harder he danced. So he danced harder.
As the perspiration dripped from his forehead down his face and into his eyes he could see that the boy was slowly coming around. Regonition once again shone in Craig’s eyes and Hehaka Naji knew that if his strength held just a little longer he could bring this child home. Little by little he tightened the circle around Craig, dancing ever closer. When at last he stood directly behind the boy he reached into his pouch for the healing stones and placed one on either side of the boy’s neck holding them there securely. As he knew it would, his strength began to ebb, moving, transfering itself from him to the boy. At the same time Craig started to become more aware, and realizing what Standing Elk was doing he tried to move away from him, his mind racing, silently touching that of the elder man saying…
“No, I can’t let you do this!”
The reply he received was a simple one.. “It is my choice young one…quiet now and listen,for there is something I must tell you – one last thing that I would have you do for me."
