Chapter 56
Saturday - lunchtime
*********************
“Here you are, James.”
James looked up as the door opened and Patti came in carrying a tray with two large glasses of what he guessed was the pick-me-up she’d promised.
“It’s my special smoothie recipe,” she said. “There’s banana, mango, raspberry puree, orange juice and a couple of secret ingredients…”
It sounded harmless enough.
“Don’t worry, there’s no alcohol in it, Sweetie… but if you don’t like it I’ll get you something else.”
He took the glass from her and took a sip. It was delicious.
“No, it’s good… Mmm, thanks.”
David helped himself to the other glass and gulped it down.
“David!”
“What? I was thirsty.”
He stifled a yawn.
“Exhausted too by the look of you,” Patti said. “Why don’t you come and have some lunch and then go back to bed for a couple of hours? Both of you. It’ll do you good. I have a suspicion you’ve both been working too hard. James was telling me you often work twenty hours at a stretch. It’s no wonder you fainted, Sweetie…”
“I’m not sure I feel like eating,” James said.
“What’s on the menu, Mom?” David asked.
“Dad’s leek and potato soup, game pie, assorted cold cuts and salad,” she replied. “Or, I could make you something else - sandwich, omelette…”
“Maybe I’ll have some soup,” James said, “especially if it’s as good as the carrot and orange was.”
“Oh, this is better,” Patti assured him. s Das Dave’s speciality… And, I’ve made a batch of granary rolls this morning.”
“You’ve talked me into it,” James said, handing the empty glass back to her.
“Okay, I’ll give you a call when it’s ready. About fifteen minutes…”
“Just soup for me too, Mom,” David called after her.
**************
“Are you feeling all right?” James asked, after she’d gone. “Eat too much yesterday?”
“Yeah, but mainly I’m just tired. I didn’t get any sleep last night…”
“Oh, Davy, I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have kept you up… Oh, heck! I shouldn’t have come here at all. All I’ve done is cause trouble between you and your sister, made a fool of myself in front of your family, embarrass you with my political views…”
He never got to finish the sentence as suddenly David’s mouth was covering his own. James willingly surrendered to the kiss and wrapped his arms around his lover…
*************
“I love you, Baby,” David breathed as the kiss ended, “and I’m glad you came. So are Mom and Dad… and you haven’t embarrassed me. How could you, just by being yourself? Anyway, I agreed with most of what you were saying. I’d have supported your argument if Beth hadn’t been sounding off…”
“Uh, uh! Be nice to your sister… Let her win once in a while. Maybe she’ll respond…”
“Okay, I suppose I can manage to be nice for another twenty four hours but you’re gonna have to make it worth my while…”
“Oh, I will… once I get my strength back.”
David bent his head to kiss James again. As he did so, the door opened.
“Oops, sorry!” Bo said.
David turned to look at her.
“Gonna make a habit of this, are you?” he asked.
“Well, if you’re determined to make out in every room of the house, it’s gonna be hard not to,” she chuckled.
David laughed.
“Mom said to tell you lunch is ready.”
“Thanks. We’ll be along in a minute.”
*************
“More soup, James?” Patti asked.
“Thanks, but I couldn’t manage any more just now… It was really delicious though. You were right…”
Patti beamed at him.
“If you want to go, James, it’s okay,” she whispered as Bo helped David and Jon to seconds.
“I think I will, if you don’t mind,” he replied. “I’ve got a bit of a headache…”
“You go on upstairs, Sweetie,” she said. “I’ll bring you a couple of Tylenol in just a minute.”
James stood up and left the table.
“I hope you feel better soon, Uncle James,” he heard Lizzie say as he passed her chair.
“I’ll be fine by this evening, Popp he he said, kneeling down beside her and slipping his arm around her shoulders. “Don’t you worry about me.”
“You’re not going to die are you, Uncle James?” she added. “I don’t want you to die.”
“Oh no, Darling,” Patti said. “Uncle James just has a headache. Uncle David will look after him. He’s not going to die. Whatever made you think such a thing?”
“One of her school friends lost her grandfather last week,” Bo whispered to Patti. “It’s obviously made more of an impact than I’d thought. I’ll talk to her later…”
“Tell you what, Lizzie. How about I read you a bedtime story, tonight?”
“Ooo, yes!” she squealed.
“Then I’ll see you later, Poppet.”
**************
“He’s good with children, isn’t he?” Bo said as James left the room.
David looked up from his soup to find his mother staring at him. Her eyes were full of sadness. She quickly turned her gaze to the children when their eyes met.
“Davy,” she said, “when you and Lizzie are both finished you can go upstairs and play but don’t make too much noise. Remember Uncle James is taking a nap.”
Everyone else was already tucking into the game pie but it was clear the children were getting restless.
“Thank you, Grandma,” Davy said. “Come on, Lizzie.”
When they’d gone, David turned to his mother.
“You already have two beautiful grandchildren, Mom… Look, I’m sorry but…” he began.
“You don’t have anything to apologise for, Darling,” she said, “but it is a pity that you won’t be able to have any children of your own. You’d both make wonderful fathers…”
“Didn’t James tell you he already has a son?” Beth said much to the astonishment of the others. In David’s case, the astonishment was not that James had a son - he’d known that for some time - but rather that James had chosen to share the fact with Beth.
Patti was looking to David for confirmation.
He nodded.
“Yes, Mom, he does. His ex tricked him into having a child and then promptly served him with divorce papers. He’s not even allowed to see him.”
“Oh, but that’s terrible. Poor James! The poor sweet boy,” Patti exclaimed. “Oh dear… the Tylenol. I must go and find them for him…”
David watched as she hurried from the room. The tear trickling down her cheek hadn’t gone unnoticed.
“I’ll help you…” Dave said, getting up to follow her. He’d evidently seen it too.
“You could always adopt,” Bo said. “A lot of same sex couples do…”
“Or, you could get a friend or relative to have a baby for you,” Beth said. “That way, at least it would have genes from one of you… One of the guys in my department has a child by his sister…”
“What?” David exclaimed nearly choking on his last mouthful of soup.
“His partner is the father, Silly,” Beth giggled.
David felt like throwing something at her but resisted the urge.
“That way you get genes common to both…”
“Yeah, yeah, I get the picture…” he mumbled, embarrassed by his own stupidity.
“Don’t look at me,” Bo said to Beth who was doing exactly that and grinning. “Two was enough for me. I love my children but I had such a hard time carrying Davy and it wasn’t much better with Lizzie. I couldn’t go through that again. Have you forgotten how I had to spend six weeks with my feet up? I’m sorry, Davy…”
“Hey, ’s okay, Sis,” David said, pulling Bo into a hug. “I’m not asking you to…”
Bo kissed him on the cheek.
“I might consider it,” Beth announced, silencing them all.
They all turned to stare at her.
“Well, I’m not likely to ever have a partner of my own,” she continued, “and I’m too selfish to bring up a child on my own. It’d be cool though to know that my genes would live on…”
“Beth!” Bo exclaimed. “Stop it! It’s far too soon to talk about starting a family. Give David a chance… He and James haven’t even agreed to a commitment ceremony yet. Besides, their careers would make it very difficult to raise a child...”
David got up from the table.
“Davy?”
Bo was staring at him.
“I’m gonna go check on James,” he said.
“Hey, wait up, Little Brother,” Beth said, grabbing his arm. “You’ve already asked him, haven’t you?”
“Not in so many words…” David mumbled, but he knew that was exactly what he wanted to do.
“Oh, great,” Beth sighed. “Another marriage… and the last one went so well…”
