Chapter 58 – And So It Goes
Two weeks later Craig was feeling well enough to try sitting up in bed, and of course, Raven, Vin, and Chris were right there hovering over him protecting him from all things strenuous or stressful. Eric had flown home to join his family and bury his father two days after Craig regained conscientiousness, and to Vin’s shock, and surprise Raven followed him on the fifth day saying that “Craig was out of the woods, he was alive, and she owed that to Ric and Hehaka Naji and she intended to pay her respects.” She returned the day after the funeral to loving grateful smiles from the twins and a barrage of questions from Vin.
Standing in the hallway outside of Craig’s room Vin and Raven began a much overdue talk about her relationship with Eric. Raven had the advantage of knowing where this conversation was going; even if Eric hadn’t told her what Vin was thinking she knew that a confrontation over Ric was imminent and she was prepared. Vin began with an olive branch of understanding…
Vin stood facing the large picture window gazing out at the evergreen vista that was North Carolina. He wasn’t sure how to start, he wasn’t sure he even wanted to start. Things had almost gotten back to normal, Craig was on the mend, Chris was all smiles again, Ric was back in South Dakota, and Raven, though somewhat quiet and reserved wasn’t fighting with him. And that was the thing that worried him the most, she’d always been one to speak her mind, openly and quickly, and now it seemed as if there was still some great weight that was bearing down on her, some wall that was still between them. He’d found her several times over the last week standing in the hallway talking on her cell, he knew who she was talking too, she didn’t know anyone here so it couldn’t have been anyone except Ric. She didn’t try to hide it from him, and he wasn’t sure if that was a good sign or a bad one. But he was sure of one thing, it was time for the truth, it was time to find out where he stood in her life, or for that matter if there was a place for him in her life at all. He began slowly and quietly, what he didn’t want right now was start a fight, he just wanted his life back…
“Look, I know these last two weeks have been a crazy time for all of us, and the last thing I want to do is fight or argue; that’s not why I asked you to come out here with me.” “But there are a lot of things I don’t understand…things that don’t make sense, at least not to me.” “We’ve had a good thing going here for quite a while, and I thought we had an understanding…I thought we were on the same page, wanted the same things.” “But lately…”
“You mean since Eric has come home” she interjected.
“Yes” he said as he looked her in the eye, “Since then..” “Since he’s come back things between us have changed…and I don’t understand what’s going on between the two of you.” “When he first came back you said that there was nothing between you, that he was just an old friend, but now…”
“But now you think there’s something more…”
“Yes” he said honestly “I do…and I just need to know the truth.” Then he hit her with the question she knew was coming…
“Have you been…”
She interrupted again, “With him since he’s come home?”
Vin looked at her incredulously, and the thought passed through his mind that if she knew what he was going to say before he said it that he was probably right.
“The answer is no” she said quietly.
Vin fought desperately to keep his emotions from showing on his face. He didn’t believe her, and his next question made that painfully obvious as the tension and volume gradually crept back into his voice…
“Are you saying you weren’t with him the day after he came home…that afternoon before we went to dinner?”
“That’s exactly what I’m saying.” “I have not ‘been’ with Ric since he’s come home.”
Temper right below the surface, Vin pointed at himself with his forefinger and got right up in her face with his next statement…
“I know about the cemetery” he said vehemently. “I know where you were and I know who you were with!” he spat out as he turned and stepped a few paces away from her.
“How could you do that to me…to us?” “And then stand there like butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth and lie right to my face?”
Raven had had enough. Up to this point she’d been truly conflicted about her feelings, the last two weeks had been absolute madness. The twins leaving home, Craig being hurt, Vin, and Ric coming back into her life at a time when she was vulnerable; when she needed his particular brand of comfort and serenity most. All she wanted to do was wait until things calmed down, to give everyone concerned chance to think rationally and logically about what they really wanted before she broached the subject. She could see now that it wasn’t going to happen that way; he was going to force the issue and she hated being backed into a corner.
“I’m not lying, she said as her tone of voice raised “I never lied to you before and I’m not lying now!”
His response was quick and ill thought out, temper now boiling over…
“Don’t stand there and give me that shit!” “ I KNOW!” “I know you were with him in the cemetery…don’t stand there and try to deny it! “I saw the mud all over your jeans…that red mud that can only be found in one place??” “Remember that?” “The kid at the restaurant told me all about it – only one place in the county, and it was all over your jeans, and your car…and his truck!” “So don’t stand there and give me that crap that you haven’t been with him, cause I know you have!” “Tell me something girly, do I look like somebody that you can play?” “Do I?” “Do I look that stupid to you?”
“Play you?” she yelled, “Play you?” “Nobody has to play you Vin, you do a great job of that all by yourself.” “So, you think you have it all figured out do you?”
“Well now, isn’t this just the best ‘coincidence’…those are the same damn words your buddy Ricky boy used back at the house.” “I knew the two of you were up to no good, I knew it!”
“Oh this is just great, just great!” “Every time I think that maybe I can trust you to use your head you come up with some more bullshit!”
“Trust me?” he screamed, “You’ve always been able to trust me”
“Yeah right” she replied as she headed towards the elevator “And we both know how far that got me the last time!”
Following her into the elevator Vin continued the argument…
“Leave it to you to bring that up now.” “So what is this supposed to be?” “Your way of paying me back for Michelle?”
As she pressed the button for the lobby she responded…
“No, this is my way of saying I don’t’ need this crap in my life, I was doing just fine before I met you and I’ll be fine after you’re gone!”
“So that’s it?” “That’s how it’s gonna be?” “You’re not even gonna try to work this out?”
“Work what out?” “There’s nothing to work out…you obviously don’t trust me, and we both know I can’t trust you – you always think you have the answer to everything – well guess what?” “You don’t!” “ You don’t have a clue!”
As the elevator his the lobby floor the two of them were still arguing as the doors opened. Stepping out into the lobby Raven headed for the front door with Vin right behind her still bellowing like a bull..
“Don’t have a clue huh?” “So since I’m too stupid to see what’s right in front of me, why don’t you enlighten me?” “What is it that I’m missing here Raven?” “Come on, tell me…what is it that I don’t know about you two?” “As if I couldn’t guess!” “What has he got that I haven’t got?”
As she passed through the door she wheeled on him and let him know exactly what she was thinking, and she didn’t pull any punches…
“Fine!” “You wanna know what you don’t know about the two of us?” “Then I’ll tell you…what you don’t know is that Ric and I have been friends since as far back as I can remember, we’ve been taking care of each other and fighting each other’s battles since the fourth grade. “He took me on my first real date, he was the first boy to give me flowers.” He gave me my first kiss and yes.. she shouted “My first hickey too.” “He walked me to school every day, and did homework with me every night.” “He was my biggest cheerleader whenever I succeeded at even the smallest thing, and he’s the one who dried my tears and told me it would be all right whenever I failed.” “Every year he took me to the county fair, he took me to my senior prom – and yes Vin, surprise…he’s the one that I first gave myself to.” “He’s the one who held me up in the lake when I learned how to swim, and he’s the one who held my hand when I buried my parents.” “And you know Vin…through all of that, through all those years, all the ups and all the downs, all the laughter and all the fights – he’s never once cheated on me – an more importantly, he’s never once called me a liar.”
Vin stood there stunned, he knew that the two of them had a history, but he had no idea that they went back that far together. As he calmed down, he opened his mouth to speak but Raven cut him off…
“And just so you know…just so there’s no further ‘misunderstanding’ between us…Eric and I have not been together since he came home.” “The day that we went to dinner I went to the cemetery – alone.” “And no, before you ask – since you seem to need to verify everything I say – I didn’t meet Eric there.” “After our little ‘misunderstanding’ in the kitchen I went to sit with my parents, I need to find a quiet place to think, somewhere where I new I could find some peace…where I could sort out my feelings without having to explain to you or anyone what was going through my head.”
She stood there quietly then, waiting to hear what he had to say, and although he had calmed down considerably from his previous outburst he was still distrustful…
“So…you’re telling me that you didn’t go there to meet him, and you didn’t tell me or him that you would be there, and he just ‘miraculously’ turned up and found you?”
Raven was done. She could see he wasn’t listening, and she was finished trying to get him to see something other than himself.
“No Vin, that’s not what I’m telling you.” “I didn’t see Eric at the cemetery, and as to how he knew I was there…he didn’t.” “What you don’t know is that his mother, Amanda, is buried there, and every time he comes home he goes to see her.” “My guess is he was there to see his mom.” “I –never- saw- Ric- at- the- cemetery.” “I found out later when he called to ask if I wanted to cancel dinner that he was there and he saw me.” “We were never together Vin…even if I’d wanted to he wouldn’t have – because I was with you.” “No matter what else you think of Eric know this…regardless of how he feels about me, no matter how ‘wrong’ he thought you and I were as a couple…we were still a couple, and he would never take me to his bed as long as we were still together.” “He has too much pride for that, and he’s not one for lying.” “And neither am I.”
“How he ‘feels’ about you?” “Present tense?”
“Yes, present tense…he’s made it clear how he feels, and that he wants us back together.”
“And how do you feel about that?” “Is that what you want?”
“The truth?”
“The truth.”
“The truth is…”
