“Hey, Billy! Are you ready yet?” Joel called from upstairs. They had an appointment with Dr. Starins in an hour, but there was heavy traffic on the highway. Otherwise, they might be late for their appointment. About a minute later, he saw Billy walking in, wearing a black Level 27 T-shirt, black converse sneakers, and black pants.
“Do you really need to take forever to get dressed, Billy?”
“Sorry, Joel, I couldn’t find anything to wear. All of my clothes are dirty.”
“Whatever. Anyway, we have to leave right now. There’s suppose to be heavy traffic along the highway today,” Joel told him, as they walked out to the car. As soon as they got onto the highway, there was already traffic, and Billy started complaining.
“Damn it! Why is there have to be so much traffic right now?” Billy complained.
“I told you there would be traffic, but apparently, you weren’t listening to anything I said,” Joel said, itatitated. Joel was having a very bad day and didn’t want to talk to anybody, not even Billy. At times, Joel’s not very easy to talk to.
“I’m sorry, Joel. I just have so much that I’m going through, okay?”
“Actually, I’m sorry about how I’m acting right now. I guess I’m nervous about being a father. I’ve never really taken care of a child before,” Joel said. The traffic started moving and they get to the doctor’s office a few minutes later. Billy walked up to the front desk, but the receptionist didn’t look like the one that was there before.
“Um, hi. My name is William Martin and I have an appointment with Dr. Starins.” The reception turned to face him and he noticed that she was his childhood friend, Susie.
“Hey, Susie! What are you doing here? Where’s the other receptionist?” He was wondering why she was here instead of the other receptionist.
“Oh, you mean Maiga? She’s sick today. I’m filling in for her. So you have an appointment with the doctor, huh?” Billy nodded.
“Okay, you can take a seat until he’s ready for you.”
“Thanks,” Billy said, as he sat down in chair next to the one Joel was sitting in. He looked around and saw children of all ages. He was feeling nervous. He didn’t know why he was so nervous, but he was.
“Mr. Martin, the doctor will see you now.” Billy stood up once he heard that, and headed into the examination room, followed by Joel. Billy sprawled out onto the examination table, while Joel sat by his side. He still felt nervous, but Joel told him that everything would be okay. About a minute or so later, Dr. Starins entered the room.
“Hello William, how have you been?”
“Fine, I guess.”
“Have you been experiencing any pain?”
“Not that I know of.”
“Are you sure you’re not experiencing any pain, like when you sit up or lie down?”
“I don’t think so,” Billy said, confused.
“Okay, let’s get started now, shall we?” He said, turning on the ultrasound machine. A fuzzy image of the baby appeared on the screen. Billy stared at the screen for about a minute or so before he heard the doctor speak again.
“Well, your baby looks healthy. Would you like to know the gender?” Dr. Starins asked them. They both nodded at his question.
“Well, it doesn’t appear to have a penis, so that must mean it’s a girl,” the doctor announced. Billy smiled as Joel held his hand.
“Do either of you drink or smoke regularly?” Dr. Starins asked. They shook their heads no.
“Good. Everything will be fine within the next few months. Just come back in a month for another check-up. You can make an appointment with the receptionist.”
“Thank you, Dr. Starins,” Billy said, as he and Joel were leaving. They made an appointment and left. When they got to the parking lot, they saw someone familiar. It was Susie.
“Hey, Susie, I didn’t think I’d see how you out here so soon,” Billy said.
“Yeah, I just got done. Anyway, was your ultrasound? Did you find out what the baby’s gender is?” She asked me.
“Yeah, it’s a girl,” Billy told her and she smiled.
“Oh that’s sweet! Congratulations.”
“Thanks,” he said, as he saw Joel appear out of the corner of his eye. The three of them talked for a while until it started becoming dark.
“Well guys, it’s getting late, so I better go. Good luck and congratulations!”
“Hey, Susie. Maybe we could all get together and hang out or something?” Joel asked.
“Okay, that would be great. Well, I had better go now. Bye.”
“Bye,” She said before she drove off.
“Well, it looks like we have to get some pink stuff for the baby’s room,” Billy said. Joel looked at him and laughed.
“What? What’s so funny?”
“Pink is too girly.”
“Well, we are having a girl, so why not pink?” Billy asked, confused.
“Maybe we can paint the room both pink and black,” Joel suggested.
“That’s a great idea, Billy! When do we start?” Joel asked, starting to get excited.
“Soon, I hope,” Billy answered.
