Chapter 5
As soon as we entered the club, we saw Howie, Jess, Dani and AJ. We made our way over to the table they were at.
“ Hey guys!” I said and gave them all hugs.
“ Hey Angel! Who your friend?” Jess asked giving Kevin the elevator look. I smiled at her and said,
“ Guys this is Kevin, my…um…my cousin, Kevin…this is the gang!” I hoped no one noticed the hesitation.
Kevin shook their hands and sat down at the table. Jess pulled me aside and whispered,
“ Angel, how come you never told me you had a cousin? A hot one at that!”
“ You think he’s hot?” I asked trying to act surprised. I knew he was hot, but if he was supposed to be my cousin, I couldn’t really act like I thought that. “God! He’s the guy that used to torture me when I was a kid! How can you think he’s hot?” I lied. I hated lying to my friends, but I guess in this case, it was necessary. I mean it was in their best interests.
The night went on, Jess was hitting heavily on Kevin, who didn’t seem to notice her. He kept staring out at the dance floor. What or who he was looking for I didn’t know, but I had an idea. I crawled over AJ and squeezed down beside Kevin and said to him,
“ Kevin…please try to have fun.”
He turned to look at me,
“ Huh?”
I rolled my eyes,
“ Please!” I said, “ All you’ve been doing all night is stare out on that dance floor! Now we came here to have some fun, so let’s have some fun!” I took his hand, “Let’s go dance!”
He followed me to the dance floor and we started dancing to the beat pumping out of the large speakers on either side of the floor. Finally, after a couple of dances, he looked like he was starting to ease up. When a quiet song came on we decided to go back to the table. As we reached the table AJ stood up and asked me if I wanted to dance. I told him yes, but I needed to use the little girls-room first.
I made my way back across the dance floor to the ladies room. As I was about to enter I saw a couple leaving through the emergency exit. I didn’t know why, but I had a bad feeling about it, so I decided to follow them. They had gone round a corner, into to an alley. I silently followed the sound of the girl’s laughter and stood by the corner, looking down the alley. He started kissing her passionately, which she didn’t seem to mind at all. They carried on making out for a couple of minutes and when she still didn’t protest, I decided to go back inside. Just as I was about to open the backdoor again, I heard her scream. Not even thinking about it, I ran back into the alley. I grabbed the guy and turned him around. The girl fell to the ground, breathing heavily. The guy looked at me and was about to punch me, when I raised my knee and hit him in his family jewels. Crying out in pain, he fell to the ground. He was still rolling around on the ground, when I helped the girl to her feet and helped her inside. I told her to wait in the ladies room, while I went to get Kevin.
Outside, in a dark corner of the alley, a light flickered. A man’s face was lit up, as the lighter got closer. The flame touched the end of his cigarette, causing the dried tobacco to start glowing. He took a long drag and smiled. A pair of fangs was peeking out from under his lip. He slowly started moving out from his dark hiding place, and having seen what had just happened, he knew he had to get home in a hurry.
I soon found Kevin, who had obviously started to loosen up, on the dance floor with Jess. They were bumping and grinding to the music as I stepped up to him and patted his shoulder. At first he didn’t notice a thing, so I decided to pad a little harder. When that didn’t work either, I realized what I had to do. I smacked him over the top of his head. He turned around, surprised by the ambush, and Jess gave me a look, that let me know she wasn’t pleased with the interruption. I decided to ignore her. I would deal with that later.
“ What is it?” Kevin asked, seeing the look of concern on my face.
“ Could you just…um…come with me for a sec?” I asked.
“ Sure!” he said, gesturing for me to lead the way.
I started walking toward the ladies room, and when I knocked on the door, he turned me around.
“ Angel, what’s going on? I can’t go in there!” he said, shock written all over his face.
I looked at him and almost laughed,
“ You mean to tell me that you can battle vampires and werewolves, but you can’t go into a ladies room?” I raised an eyebrow.
“ Well technically I don’t…”The door opened and I pulled him inside, “do the battling you do!” he finished.
His eyes fell on the girl, who had now retreated to the far corner of the bathroom.
“ Oh my God, what happened?” he asked.
“ Well, let’s just say that some guys don’t take no for an answer!” I said, “Fortunately I got a bad feeling when they sneaked out the backdoor, so I followed them.”
“ Vampires?” Kevin whispered looking at me.
“ Nope, just your average rapist!” I said getting angrier by the minute, “Look, we have to get her out of here, that’s why I came to get you, you’re driving, remember?”
“ Yeah…ok…” Kevin said.
“ Now, you sneak out of the backdoor, we don’t wanna draw too much attention, and I’ll go tell the others we’re leaving…I’ll just make up some excuse!” I said.
Kevin took his jacket and wrapped it around the girl, while I slipped out of the bathroom again. I soon located the others at the table, and walked up to them.
“ Listen guys, I’m really sorry, but Kevin and I have to leave” I told them.
Jess looked at me and asked,
“ But why? I’m mean…why?”
God I hated lying to my friends, but again, I didn’t want to tell them anything that might freak them out.
“ I just got beeped by my aunt, Kevin’s mom, she has an emergency!”
“ Oh okay, well we’ll see you tomorrow right?” Howie asked.
“ Yeah, we could all meet at my place and watch some videos or something!” I said, “I really have to go!”
I was gone before any of them could respond.
As soon as I reached the front door, I saw Kevin’s car waiting for me by the curb. I ran over and hopped into the backseat, next to the girl. As soon as the door closed the car started moving down the street. I turned around and looked at her, she was still shaking, but I couldn’t see if she was actually physically hurt.
“ Are you alright?” I asked concerned.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes,
“ Yeah, I’m fine, just a little shaken up that’s all.” She said quietly.
“Where do you live? We’ll drive you home, if you think your can be alone.” I said.
“ Just down that road over there” she pointed, “ Thank you…you know…for saving me.”
“ Not a problem!” I said, “What’s your name?”
“ Christina, but you can call me Chris.”
“ Okay Chris, I’m gonna give you my number, and if you ever wanna talk, just call!” I said, “Do you know who the guy was?”
“ No, it was just some guy I met, I don’t know why I went with him out back, I mean it’s not something I do on a regular basis!”
“ It’s okay…so you made a mistake, people do that you know!”
She smiled,
“ Yeah…I know”
We reached her house, and walked her to the door. I handed her my phone number and told her to call me anytime, if she needed to talk. As soon as the door closed we headed back to the car. The ride back to Kevin’s place was quiet. Only the sound of the car’s engine was heard. I guess neither of us knew what to say. Only thing I knew was that I was surprised by my own reaction when I heard her scream. I was surprised by the fact that I had actually kicked that guy’s butt. I guess Kevin was surprised about that stuff too. I just wasn’t sure. He had this really firm look on his face all the way home, like he was thinking about something important. I’d ask him in the morning. I closed my eyes, and soon fell into a dreamless sleep.
Brian ran into the house with enormous speed. He had to find The Master. He looked in every room on the ground floor. When he didn’t find him there, he ran up the stairs two steps at a time. He proceeded down the long hallway to The Master’s office, and stopped just before he hit the wall. He stood there for a while, trying to catch his breath, before knocking.
“ Yes!” came the muffled voice from inside.
Brian opened the door and walked in.
“ Master” he said. Even though he was Nick’s most trusted friend, he always addressed him as Master when there were other vampires around, “I have great news!”
Nick looked at him, and then at the other vampires in the room.
“ Leave!” he said looking at them.
They all stood up and left, leaving Nick and Brian alone in the room. As soon as they had closed the door Brian continued,
“ Nick…I think I know who the slayer is.”
Nick’s interest had suddenly been awakened. He looked at Brian, excitement showing in his eyes.
“ So…who is it Brian?”
“ Well, I don’t know her name, but if I see her again, I’ll know it!”
“So it’s a girl…interesting!” Nick said, seemingly lost in his thoughts when all of a sudden he continued, “What do you mean you don’t know her name Brian? I mean, it really doesn’t help us at all, if all we know is that she’s a girl!”
Though Nics ans angry all of a sudden, Brian remained calm,
“ I know where she hangs out. Next time I see her, I’ll read her mind. Don’t worry okay?”
“ Yeah…whatever!” Nick said exasperated as he slumped down into his chair behind the desk.
“ Geez Nick, one of these days you’re gonna give yourself a heart-attack!” Brian said, “ Oh no…wait…you can’t!”
Brian started laughin his his own lame joke, and soon Nick couldn’t keep a straight face either.
“ Seriously though, you gotta be careful with your temper tantrums, the other vampires are starting to be afraid of you.” Brian said when their laughing fit ended.
“ What if I want them to fear me?” Nick said.
“ That’s up to you, all I’m saying is I’ve overheard some of them talking about starting their own Coven in another city.”
“ Fine! I’ll think about it!” Nick said angrily. He wasn’t angry with Brian though, he was angry with himself. He knew Brian was right. He couldn’t let them take off and start their own Coven it would make him look weak. He had to stay on their good sides.
“ So…anything else?” Nick asked after a few minutes of complete silence.
“ No…I don’t think so…” Brian said, “Except, why don’t you go with me to the club tomorrow?”
“ Yeah…sure…I need to get out of here anyway…” Nick said.
“ Great…Look, the sun is coming up soon, so I think I’ll just head to bed.” Brian said, turning around to open the door.
“ Okay…I’ll see you tomorrow!” Nick said, and went back to the paper he had been reading before he had been disturbed.
Brian closed the door behind him, and Nick let out a sigh. He was looking forward to getting his hands on this slayer. He hated the feeling of not being in control. A feeling he got every time a new slayer came around.
