Mine To Give - Chapter Five
The first thing Natalie remembered as the fog in her brain lifted with the morning light was Hayden bursting through her door the night before. A swell of emotion broke over her, pulling her under to the depths of her soul. In awe, she moved her limbs testing their level of aching. Hayden had raged out of control, a wildfire consuming her in a firestorm of emn son so intense she was scorched clear through. Muscles ached, but it was a good ache. It reminded her of how far he’d lost a hold on his civilized self to get to her.
Natalie stretched her arms over her head and smileAlwaAlways good-natured and sweet, Hn nen never had an unkind word to say to anyone, but in the space of twenty-four hours he’d punched Matt in the face and stormed into her heart and body alive with jealousy and desire. She knew jealousy was a dangerous emotion, but she had to admit she’d been swept away by his fierce loving. When she’d reacted to the first touch of his rough mouth she knew he’d known in that instant that Matt had lied. But he’d been out of control and she had done nothing to stop him.
A stunned smile tickled her lips as her aching body hummed with life, more vibrant than ever. She turned her head on her pillow a sudden frown marring her features. Hayden wasn’t there. His scent clung to the bedclothes and pillow, still indented where his head had lain. A timid hand reached out, touching the impression. The tangled sheets wound around her legs trapping her body. Curious, she examined the bed, a wry brow lifting at the total disarray. A tiny, hysterical giggle bubbled out. What a mess they’d made!
Still smiling, she stumbled out of bed and wandered through the apartment. The quiet and stillness that permeated the rooms attested to Hayden’s absence. Puzzled, Natalie went into the bathroom to shower. Absently she soaped her body, tiny lines etched across her forehead
Where was he? When did he leave? More importantly, why did he leave? The last thing she could recall she had been enveloped in his arms, his graceful fingers stroking her hair, her skin. Even now her stomach fluttered at the rerancrance and goosebumps prickled her flesh. A wistful sigh whispered from her.
It’s like he’s cast some kind of hypnotic spell on me, she mused, rinsing the shampoo from her hair under the stinging spray. Last time we worked together he did the same thing. He’d look at me with those blue eyes and I’d fall apart. Only I kept myself under control.
…Except for that one day. Italy. The photo shoot with Annie Liebowitz. Natalie bee been in a strange mood. That day she had been the one throwing him smoldering looks, saying things with her eyes. Lying in the grass with him, their eyes had met and something had passed between them, something that stole her breath from her. The flutter had happened. Not the usual ‘he’s so hot I want to meet him’ flutter. This one flipped her stomach so quickly she’d felt nauseous. And it had happened to him. She had seen it in his eyes and felt it in the sudden rise of his chest. When Annie’s assistaneltnelt down to adjust Hayden’s clothing a fierce possessiveness gripped her. Not only did she want to shove her away and scream at her to keep her filthy hands off him, she’d glared at the others wanting them to disappear. For the rest of the day her appetite refused to cooperate. If she had eaten she had been afraid she would not be able to keep it down.
But later…later she had found Hayden alone. He was eating a peach, closing his eyes from time to time savoring the juicy flesh. He’d smiled at her when he saw her, his white teeth flashing. But she had no answering smile for him. His smile faded, the blue eyes earnest under lowered brows. Long moments drifted by as they stared at each other. His teeth sunk into the peach, a drop of juice clinging to his bottom lip.
Natalie closed her eyes lost in the memory. At the time it hadn’t seemed real. It had been an aberration, not anywhere near her typical reaction. He’d almost stopped, a flicker of shyness shadowing those eyes. Then it was gone and his lips found hers.
She could almost taste that kiss. His lips had been so sweet she’d involuntarily sunk her teeth into his bottom lip as if to bite into the flesh of the fruit. Immediately realizing her error she’d released his lip. The moment her mouth relaxed he’d pressed his advantage and deepened the kiss. The flutter scraped her insides at the rough velvet rasp of his tongue over hers. It, too, was sweet witach ach nectar.
Natalie shook herself out of her reverie. She had hurt him later with her discouragement but in the harsh light of day her logical brain had reared its head and done the right thing. Back then. Today, while she wondered at what had happened she refused to flinch from the serious overtones such a coming together implied. She knew now he was made up of a complex mixture of emotions and so was she. Time was running out and she needed time with himfindfind out how and why they were fitting together so completely.
Well, she conceded, snapping off the taps, fitting together was an understatement, at least in the physical sense. But there was something else tugging at her heartstrings. He was smart and funny. In one sentence he could impress her with his intelligence and make her laugh in the next. He was still sweet and kind, but something lurked just behind those eyes. There was still a touch of boyish shyness but it had mainly surrendered to a self-assurance gained in the last few years. Dedication to his work impressed her during the shoot for the ‘Clones’ and she had admired his confidence. Now he was even more settled.
“Cut!” George called, a chuckle rippling around the word.
Hayden bent over to catch his breath as Ewan grinned at George a moment before breaking into his infectious laughter. The crew couldn’t hold back and George’s dry sense of humor got the better of him as Nick Gillard walked over and picked up Ewan’s lightsaber, the green plastic blade bent and squiggled.
“I have no clue how you did that,” Nick shook his head, inspecting it. Hayden wheezed his laugh as Ewan took it and struck a fighting position. No matter how he held the saber, the blade pointed everywhere but at Hayden.
“Good thing it’s not real,” George chuckled, “or the only one you’d strike would be yourself!”
Nick carried the saber off and attempted to straighten it…again. A resounding snap echoed as it broke in two. Everyone laughed.
“Ewan that’s three just today!” Nick chided with a grin. “Hayden’s broken only one!”
“That’s because I’m a better saber fighter,” Hayden teased Ewan.
“Lunch!” Rick announced to the cheers of the jovial crew.
In spite of the brokebersbers they were breezing through shots at a breakneck pace, to George’s immense satisfaction. At this rate, principal photography for Ewan and Hayden would finish a couple days earlier than expected. Ewan looked forward to it, tucking into lunch with relish while Hayden played with his food, a faraway look in his eyes.
After repeating himself the the third time, Ewan set his fork down with a clang. Hayden jumped and blinked.
“OK, that’s it,” Ewan groused, standing up. “My dressing room…now.”
Heaving a sigh Hayden followed him knowing there was no way out. They had grown close during the filming of ‘Clones.’ It had been on Ewan’s advice that he’d done the play ‘This Is Our Youth.’ Hayden even stayed with Ewan and his family whenever he was in London. Ewan knew him too well.
“All right,” Ewan closed the door and folded his arms, “what’s going on? I can’t fault your concentration on the set but off it you’re off planet somewhere. What’s up?”
“It’s Natalie,” Hayden blurted, watching Ewan’s brows climb.
“Natalie?” Ewan parroted. Hayden nodded. “What about her?”
Hayden turned away to pace and ran a hand through his hair. “She…me…us…”
“What do you ‘us ‘us?’”
Hayden grimaced and looked at Ewan. “We’ve…um…”
“You and Natalie?” Ewan’s eyes bulged. “Since when?”
“Since the attack.”
“What! But that was weeks ago! Neither one of you have even hinted that anything’s going on!”
“I’m not even sure it is. I think she’s confused and I’m not helping.”
“What do you mean? Are you taking advantage of her?”
“Of course not!” Hayden hotly denied, then sighed. “At least not intentionally. But if she’s having feelings for me only because I saved her I’m doing both of us no favors. And she hurt me last time pretty badly. I have to be careful.”
Ewan nodded, rubbing a hand through his beard. “What about you? Could it be you’re feeling for her because you rescued her? The knight in shining armor, the damsel in distress, and all that?”
Hayden shook his head. “No. I’ve always been crazy for her. She’s a fantastic woman. I…love her.”
Ewan plopped into a chair and squeezed his eyes shut. “No, no, no! Intense onset affairs are deadly! They burn out as fast as they flare to life! Don’t get mixed up in that! They only end in misery. And you two are not those kind of people!”
“Exactly!” Hayden pulled up a chair. “That’s why this is so different.”
“And what about Matt?”
“What about him?” Hayden growled with distaste.
“Michelle?”
“I broke things off with her after I heard her refer to Natalie with a slur that most definitely made her less attractive.” Ewan lifted a surprised brow. “You could say I saw her true colors. As for Matt…he’s a jerk. He doesn’t deserve her.”
“But, Hayden,” Ewan said gently, not knowing how to soften the blow, “has she broken up with him?”
Hayden’s head jerked up, blue eyes narrowing. Reluctantly, he shook his head, his heart nose-diving into his stomach. The only time he was sure of Natalie was when she was wrapped around him like she was last night. Her fervent promise that there was only him still rang in his ears. He looked over at Ewan’s sober face.
“I’m going away for awhile,” Hayden stated. “Tove and I are going on walkabout in the Outback for a month. It will give Natalie some time to figure things out.”
“And you?”
“I know how I feel, Ewan,” Hayden frowned, blue eyes flashing.
Ewan nodded, recognizing the serious intent in the voice. “You know, my wife and girls are going to France to visit her family so I’ll be here all alone.”
“You want to come with us?”
I couldn’t stay out for a month, but I’d love to traipse the Outback for a couple of weeks.”
“Great!” Hayden enthused, his problems momentarily pushed aside. “Tove’s leaving to fly here in a few days and when shooting is over in a couple weeks we’re out of here.”
“Uh, are you going to tell Natalie?”
“Yes,” Hayden admitted, already missing her. “She needs time away from me…AND Matt. He probably won’t be so generous. It’s a big risk, but I have to take it.”
Ewan stood up and clapped Hayden’s shoulder. “It IS a big risk. Huge. And it says a lot about how you feel about her.”
By the time Hayden reached Natalie’s apartment he was beyond exhaustion. Sheer determination got him safely to her door. Natalie took one look at him and pulled him inside guiding him to the bedroom. In the dim light they silently undressed each other, hands lingering on smooth flesh as the garments fell away. They slid under the sheets and curled together. For a few moments they stared into one another’s eyes then spent a few more exchanging soft, sleepy kisses before fatigue carried them away.
When Natalie awoke she found herself spooned against Hayden, his arm flung around her waist. For a while she lay there content listening to his deep, even breathing, but eventually she wiggled onto her back and eased him into her arms so she could stroke his hair and feel the comfort of his weight. The remnants of a dream disturbed the fringes of her mind, remaining just outside the boundary of her conscious self. A frission of foreboding slithered down her spine, tightening her arms around him.
Hayden woke to the pleasant sensation of hands sliding over his back, fingers sifting through his hair. Lifting his head, he met eyes darkened with worry.
“Hi,” he whispered, a half smile tilting his lips.
“Hi,” she answered, her fingers combing his hair, edging him closer to receive a kiss, which he accepted very willingly. “A hard day on set?”
Hayden sighed. “I had to be there at 5:30 and yes, it was a hard day. We shot at a breakneck pace, even by George’s standard. At this rate we’ll be finished in just under two weeks.”
The foreboding returned and Natalie frowned. “Why?”
Hayden sucked in a deep breath. “I’m going away for a while. Where I’m going I won’t be able to be reached.”
Natalie’s heart sunk. Hayden stared at her, gauging her reaction. Her lips parted as she floundered for words, unaware of the sudden gripping of her fingers in his hair. “Why are you going away?”
“Because I love you.”
There. It was out. He’d said it. Hayden tried to swallow the lump lodged in his throat. He felt naked and vulnerable, no armor to protect him and with no place to hide as she stared into his eyes.
“You love me?”
The words barely stirred the air. Hayden nodded. “I’m going away because you need time to sort out your feelings. You don’t really know how you feel about me, do you?”
“I know I don’t want you to go!”
“I need more than that. If you only think you feel like this because I saved you from that idiot then it will die a quick death. If not, I’ll be back. But you canhinkhink straight when every time you turn around I’m here, like this, with you, taking advantage.” He sucked in a harsh breath. “Or if Matt’s here.”
Natalie sat up, an angry fire lighting her eyes. Leaning over him she glared. “I told you I don’t love him. That hasn’t changed. If you think leaving me will help me see I don’t love him then you’re wasting your time. And you are NOT taking advantage of me!”
At Hayden’s skeptical look she growled in frustration. “Why won’t you believe me?”
“Because the last time something started between us you stopped it…cold!” He shot back, watching her body stiffen in remembrance. “I’m the one who got hurt, remember?”
Natalie bit her lip at the flare of lingering pain in his eyes. Hayden sighed and reached up to stroke her cheek, unhappy at the reminder he’d thrown at her. “It’s been planned with Tove for a while now. I didn’t just decide to do it, Nat.”
“How long will you be gone?”
“Four, six weeks.” At her sharply indrawn breath, he hoisted himself up and kissed her. “It’s not going to be easy on me, either. All kinds of doubts are going to creep in. I’m going to wonder what you’re thinking, what you’re deciding…but if you decide you want to go down this road with me I need you to commit to it.”
“What if I tell you I do and you’ve decided you don’t?” Natalie demanded, fear pushing her questions. “What if you decide you want to try other girls first before going down that road with only me? What if…”
A squeal left Natalie as Hayden roughly flipped her over onto her back. “Don’t you EVER insinuate I’d treat you like that! EVER! This isn’t about having sex with other girls! How can you even imply that when I was willing to exchange my life for yours?”
“Oh, don’t! Don’t!” Natalie drew her hand over his mouth, halting his tirade, tears gathering in her eyes as she thought of his bruised and bloody body that night not so long ago. “I’m sorry!” The words whispered brokenly from her. “Whenever I think of how you could’ve been killed because of me…”
Hayden rolled her over into his arms, rocking her and stroking her hair. “Shh, it’s all right,” he crooned, tilting her face to his. Tears glittered and spilt over and he gently kissed and licked the droplets away. “In a couple weeks I’ll be gone. After tonight, I won’t be here again. Being close to you like this…I can’t think straight, either.”
“The more you’re with me, the more I want you, not less,” Natalie admitted, a thumb sweeping over his bottom lip, leaving a tiny smile in its wake. She rolled onto her back again, pulling him close. “If this is the last time then stay with me all night.”
“Nat, we both have to be on the set at 5:30,” Hayden reminded, feathering kisses over her face and ignoring his own logic.
“I know. Just promise me you’ll stay. Even after I go to sleep.” She sighed as he continued to kiss her, his lips brushing over her eyes. “Promise me when I wake up you’ll be here.”
The pleading in her voice, the vulnerability so unlike her, worried Hayden. “I’ll be here all night. I promise,” he whispered, unable to deny her anything.
Words uttered like a solemn vow, Hayden closed the gap between them sliding his lips over hers. Fatigue grabbed for him again but the soft slide of Natalie’s tongue against his held it at bay. Its temptation paled in comparison with the legs wrapping around his thighs and the arms spinning a tender web, holding him a willing prisoner. Sleep would have no more claim on him until he’d loved her once more. It could be the last time for a while or it could be the last time ever. The first thought hurt, the second devastated. He knew he couldn’t physically repeat the energy of the night before but neither could he stop.
Natalie’s soft sighs and moans as Hayden leisurely kissed his way over her body infused him with energy. The subtle arching of her back as he gently suckled her only added to his need. Their movements unhurried, they tangled their limbs in a slow, passionate dance. Knowing they would be together all night they took their time unwilling to hurry the outcome.
An insistent hand sent Hayden onto his back, Natalie straddling his hips. Flicking her hair behind her ears she bent over kissing a path from his throat to his mouth where she spent considerable time rubbing her lips over his, teasing his mouth, withdrawing whenever his tongue sought entrance.
A noise of protest rumbled in his chest and she smiled down at him and moved her body along his hard length. His ragged, harsh breathing hissed between his teeth as she slid up covering him with her readiness. When she took him inside her and slowly encased him, his breathing stopped. Inch by sweet inch she lowered herself, squeezing him in a slow, rhythmic pulse. Once he was sheathed completely inside she tilted her head back and closed her eyes concentrating on the fullness between her legs.
Hayden lay still watching her through slitted eyes. His fingers wrapped around her slim hips holding her steady as she began to undulate over him in lazy circles. Natalie rested her hands on his chest leaning forward slightly, lifting herself up and down on him, eyes locked to his. Minutes drifted by as she moved on him, their eyes watching one another.
The restless pressure building up inside Hayden forced him onto his elbows and then his hands, his hips thrusting in time with hers. When he sat completely up she wrapped her arms and legs around him.
Still in the dominant position Natalie moved on his lap content to take her time, letting the pressure build. He wasn’t so patient. Every time she tightened herself around him he groaned, finally burying his mouth against her neck. Long fingers clamped against her hips taking over lifting her up and down over his eager arousal. The slightly faster rhythm shoved the hard button at the apex of her thighs against him, the friction sending shuddering waves through her. Natalie gasped at the sensations spiraling inside and followed his urgings unable to slow herself back down.
“H…Hayden,” she whispered in his ear, tunneling her fingers into his hair.
“I c…can’t help it,” his voice, taut with the last fingers of self-control, stammered. Natalie drew her cheek against his until their lips barely touched. His tongue stroked over them and in, delving into the moist cavern, releasing flutters into her stomach, causing her to squirm on top of him.
Natalie tore her mouth away, sucking in air on a frustrated moan. Faster they moved, nowhere to go but up. Just far enough apart to look into one another’s eyes, they rocked, their breath mingling. Hayden swallowed the nagging impulse to throw her on her back and just have her, forcing the animal impulse down so he could watch her come apart in his arms. Already her lips were parting in restless pants her bewitching eyes glazing over. It fed his desire to see her approaching the point of no return. Wanting to give her whatever she needed, he loosened his grip allowing her to move any way she wanted, taking from him until there was nothing left.
Suddenly, she angled her hips down, taking him by surprise. The groan she tore from him encouraged her to maintain the new position. Eager hands found her breasts, twisting the tight nipples painfully. Natalie cried out at the painful, burning sensation, moaning as it dissolved into a delicious tingle. He did it again, then again when a tortured noise growled out of her. The fingers in his hair tugged his head back, glittering eyes holding his.
“Watch what you do to me, Hayden,” Natalie whispered, her voice jerking as the first waves began to ripple inside her.
Hayden felt her begin to contract around him, his eyes peeled to hers. Agonized whimpers built as she gyrated harder, her eyes refusing to leave his. But the first hard contraction struck and flung her head back, her cries filling his ears. As her tight walls milked him he snapped, the animal in him breaking its leash and charging forward. One hard shove later she was on her back and he was pounding into her, tormenting her to a height they physically couldn’t reach. But he got them there and her tortured cries turned to relief as he took over.
Hayden heard his name but was lost to finding his own peak. The spring inside him wound tighter and tighter until on a low, menacing growl it snapped and he burst free. Natalie saw his lips curl over his teeth in agony as he spilled his seed inside her. She writhed against him, clamping her legs around him, aiding him any way she could. His body locked, riding out the last of it then collapsed into arms waiting to gather him in.
Natalie’s quiet sniffles lifted his head. Barely able to move he rubbed his cheek against hers, comforting her distress.
“Don’t go away, Hayden,” Natalie begged, the vulnerable tone back in her voice.
“I have to, sweetheart,” Hayden’s fingers caught large tears spilling over. “You know it.”
“Something bad’s going to happen,” she shivered under him. “I just know it!”
Hayden tried to smile reassuringly but his lips wouldn’t comply. “Shh. Nothing’s going to happen.”
“No, Hayden,” Natalie insisted, holding his face in her hands, staring hard. “I can feel it! My grandma senses things, premonitions, and the family says I get it from her. I’ve only ever had a few in my whole life!”
Puzzled, Hayden gazed down at her, alarmed at her increasing agitation. He swept the damp hair off her cheeks, lost for words.
“Don’t leave me,” she pressed as he rolled her into his arms, creating a nest of security for her to burrow into. “Don’t leave me.”
“Is something going to happen to me?”
“I don’t know. But something bad is coming,” Natalie snuggled closer. “I don’t want it to happen to you.”
“Nat, I’ll be fine,” Hayden kissed her. “And I’ll come back safe and sound. You didn’t feel a premonition about that idiot who tried to take you, did you?” Natalie shook her head. “So you could be mistaken about this.”
“I’m not,” Natalie asserted, a stubborn tilt to her chin.
It’s not that I don’t believe you,” Hayden promised, recognizing the fierce glint in her eyes. “It’s just that it could be anyone. It won’t be me.”
“You don’t believe me.”
“I’m skeptical about that kind of stuff,” Hayden admitted, tangling fingers into her hair when she tried to pull away, “but I believe you. I’ve never seen you like this and I know you wouldn’t make it up.” His lips brushed hers. “Wn’t n’t stop living life because of maybes.”
“If anything happens to you I’ll kill you,” Natalie muttered fiercely, prompting a wide smile from Hayden that curled her toes. “The last time I had one of these my grandfather died.”
Hayden digested the information, a funny squirming in the pit of his stomach. “Maybe I should stay just to make sure you stay safe.”
Natalie crawled half over him, wiping tears from her eyes. “No. No, you’re right. I’ll be careful, but you be EXTRA careful, do you hear me?” Hayden nodded and she lay back down on him. “Be careful.”
“I will,” Hayden promised, crushing her against him. “I will.”
