5: Mismatch Twosome
This was the last weekend that Elijah had before he had to leave for his next movie. It was also the same weekend that Lia was arriving. She’d been surprised that he actually wanted to go to the airport with her, even at the risk of being seen by the possible crowd of fans.
He’d tried to disguise himself, but it was more often unsuccessful than successful. She had to admit he was good at hiding himself. He had on a scruffy baseball hat and was wearing unkempt, wrinkled clothes that was topped by sunglasses to cover his intense indigo eyes.
It was a good moment to tell Lia about their relationship. She only hoped that Lia wouldn’t be sad because she knew Lia wouldn’t be angry with her. The apprehension in her Elijah sensed, he knew why--- her best friend liked him. He squeezed the hand he held reassuringly.
As soon as the people started streaming from the gates, the reporters that were trying to blend into the crowd leapt out, especially at the spotting of Lia. Lia, like Elijah had tried to conceal herself, but it failed miserably. It didn’t take long for the press to home in on Elijah and Emmy at the exact same time that Lia saw Emmy.
For her best mate broke through the crowd of reporters and gave her a joyful hug. “I’ve missed you so much, Emmy!” Lia cried out.
Whatever Lia wanted to say next was cut off by a reporter’s rude inquiry, “Did you know that Elijah Wood is dating your best friend, Emma Lange?”
It was no secret that their relationship was hard to keep quiet after they had shown up for the Premiere of A Whirlwind Affaogetogether. She had wanted to tell Lia about this news when they actually had a moment to speak to each other face to face. Certainly, she hadn’t wanted a nosy press reporter to spoil the wonderful news like it had been spoiled.
“I didn’t want to tell you in this way, but yes Lij and I are dating,” Emmy confirmed under Lia’s curious gaze.
“Is that the fabulous news that you wanted to tell me in person?” Lia asked cheerfully. Emmy nodded. “That’s wonderful!” Her eyes narrowed. “How long were pla planning to keep this from me, mate?”
Emmy grinned, Lia was truly amazing. “Not long, not long at all.” She glanced around at the reporters that were milling around them, anxious to ask more ascertaining questions. She gave Lia a ‘Let’s get out of here’ look that Lia perfectly got, winking back as she grabbed Emmy’s hand. Her other hand still held on tightly to Elijah’s and together the three made their getaway.
When they were safely into the cab, they all sighed with relief because they saw from the rearview mirror the crowd of reporters that had chased after them. It wasn’t for Lia or Emmy, only for Elijah. As soon as they had caught their breath, Emmy asked immediately, “So what was the wonderful news you weren’t going to share with me until I told you mine?”
“I’m dating someone,” Lia replied, leaning back against the seat with apparent relief. “A photographer, his name is Phillip Conrad. I’ve worked with him quite a bit during my early modeling career, we ran into each other again in Paris. Everything clicked.” She glanced meaningfully at Emmy. “I’m glad you finally found someone.” Deliberately, she stared at Elijah with a mother hen like look. “This is her first real relationship, if you hurt her you’re dead.”
Elijah grinned. He liked Lia’s protectiveness over Emmy, it spoke well of their close friendship. There was no denying that she was his physical ideal, she was dark and she was gorgeous. But there was something about Emmy’s mind that got him bad. It didn’t hurt that she loved to read, or she was a film fanatic either.
He met Lia’s blue eyes with his own. “I won’t,” he vowed. “I promise.”
“So when are we going to meet your Phillip Conrad?” Emmy queried lightly, her eyes dancing with excitement.
Lia smiled. “Soon,” she assured, “probably tonight.”
~
Indeed, they met a debonair Phillip Conrad, who swept into Orlando’s flat and made an extravagant show of treating Lia like a Princess. What grated on Emmy’s nerve was that he insisted on calling Lia, Julia. No one she knew called Lia that, not even Lia’s steadfastly proper mum. Why didn’t Lia stop him?
Everything had been fine until Phillip had arrived. Emmy had secretively been hoping that Lia and Orli might hook up, even that maybe something might spark with Elijah. It wasn’t like she’d stop fate if that was fate. Besides, Elijah and Lia had been getting along terrifically, even better than Lia was with Orli.
When they had arrived at Orli’s flat, he had greeted Elijah with a hug and Emmy with the same but adding a peck on the cheek. His eyes widened with masculine appreciation when he laid his chocolate brown eyes on Lia. Emmy grinned, it was the classically natural reaction.
“So the most beautiful dark goddess grades my flat with her presence,” he drawled admiringly, taking the hand Lia offered and kissing her knuckles. “I must say your maggie covers don’t do you justice, Lia.”
Elijah and Emmy had ended up chuckling at Orli’s playfulness all in good fun, which only sparked a shared grin between him and Lia. Soon they were all sitting in the living room of Orli’s spacious flat, laughing and discussing whatever came to mind. The topics ranged from life in broad-spectrum to an avid discussion on movies.
Elijah and Lia were obdurately Star Wars fanatics, a shared interest they were startled to discover. “Favorite movie?” Elijah quizzed.
“Can I choose a few?” she inquired back, which brought a smile to his face. He had a few as well. “And they definitely have to be the older ones, those are classics!” He nodded fervidly with agreement, they were classics.
They would have steered the conversation to be entirely Star Wars oriented if Emmy hadn’t asked, “What’s your favorite film other than Star Wars?”
“God, Emmy,” Elijah muttered, “you know how hard it is for me to choose one.” She grinned. She knew that. It was specifically the reason she had asked it. It was a joy to pick his brain.
“Want me to narrow the selections?” He nodded, he did indeed. “Movies this year then, Lij.”
He scratched the top of his head. He hadn’t seen one yet, he didn’t think. He’d been too damn busy and all his spare time recently had been spent seeing her. And he’d much rather talk with her than watch a movie. She tried his intellect, he craved that.
“Don’t know,” he confessed. “Haven’t see any yet.”
She gave him a shocked look. “You’ve seen A Whirlwind Affair!”
“She’s got you on that one, mate,” Orli retorted, his eyes laughing with his glee.
Elijah had certainly dug himself into a hole. “I didn’t know I could choose a movie that you were in,” he said in a lame attempt to save face and not hurt his girlfriend’s feelings.
Rolling her eyes, he should know she had sharp wits. Like she was falling for that lame excuse! Instead, she turned her attention to Orli. “Orli? What’s yours?”
“If you’re letting Lij back out, I’m doing the same,” Orli responded with a devastating grin.
Emmy faked a scowl of indignation before shifting to Lia. “Try Seventeen,” Lia answered without having to be asked. “I love all the films that Lij is in. So what’s yours, Emmy?” She asked the question quickly to swing the focus from her to Emmy.
“Hmmm...” Emmy murmured, “I’d have to say it’s a tie between Ned Kelly and The Bumblebee Flies Anyway.” She grinned at both Elijah and Orli. “How can I not enjoy two movies from my two favorite boys?!”
“You said favorite movie,” Orli retorted teasingly. “”Are you changing your mind now, Emmy?”
Any further conversation was halted because Phillip Conrad had made his overly dashing appearance. It turned out that besides being a much sought after photographer, he was also a titled English gentleman, a Viscount to be accurate. To Emmy, he acted like who he was.
“Julia, darling,” Phillip greeted, kissing her passionately on the lips, much like Orli use to do to her. But there was some feeling Emmy had about him that she did not like. At first, she could not pinpoint it. It was only later that she did. “I’ve missed you so.”
As the evening progressed, the more Emmy grew to like the man less. It wasn’t that he was bad, he was strove to be the perfect boyfriend. He made sweet Elijah and adventurous Orli look bad in comparison. But there was something about him that she did not like, and she trusted her first instincts, her innate intuition.
It was with heartfelt relief when Phillip had to leave, but it was with aching regret when Lia insisted going with him. Once they had said their goodbyes and Lia promising to meet up with her tomorrow morning, they made their departure.
The remaining three stared at the door in complete silence until Orli broke it, “I did not like that Phillip Conrad.” He was being dead honest. It was his way. “So what are your thoughts, mates?”
“She could do better,” Elijah agreed. “There’s something about him that I don’t like.”
It made her smile that Elijah and Orli agreed with her. And it was she that nailed the reason why they didn’t like Lia’s photographer, Phillip Conrad. “He treats her like a trophy that he has won. He gives me this feeling that he’s dating her because of who she is as Julia Damon and not Lia.”
There was more that she hadn’t vocalized. Phillip bore a partial resemblance to Elijah with his dirty blond hair and deep blue eyes, same type of baby face. She was certain that was what had initially attracted her best friend to Phillip. Maybe, she hoped, her first impression was wrong.
But she didn’t get the feeling that it was. The unnerved feeling she got still hadn’t faded away. She had faith in Lia’s judgment though. Lia wasn’t the superficial type, Emmy knew that. That was the reason Lia hadn’t had a long term serious boyfriend for a long stretch of time. With luck, maybe this relationship would work.
~
“Du miu miss him?” Orli asked when he noticed she was abnormally quiet, even for her usually quiet self. After all, it was normal to miss a boyfriend, especially since their relationship was quite new. Elijah had only been able to stay two weeks before taking off on his next project, and she had her commitments here.
She nodded. She did miss Elijah, but it wasn’t excruciating. They’d talk and email, it wasn’t as if they had no way to communicate. “I do,” she answered. “But I’ll see him again within the month. So what is your next script?”
He shrugged. “I have a few to look at, but I’m keeping my options open. I mean, I’ve been working my ass nonstop for two years. I think I deserve a little leisure. If the right opportunity comes, who knows? I might jump on it.” He gazed intently at her. “What about you, Emmy?”
Ever since she had started her relationship with Elijah, he’d stopped calling her ‘Em love.’ It bothered her that she missed it. “Continue at Guildhall,” she remarked. “Three more months and I’ll graduate. I like to finish what I start.”
“Things will be different,” he observed. “You are an actress now.”
She shook her head. “I have always been one. Acting is in my blood, Orli.”
“Are you acting now?” he queried.
“I think,” she began in a barely a whisper, “that all humanity does is act. Some do it on purpose; others don’t. Some know exactly how they want to appear to others; some don’t. I’m acting myself. When I’m another character, it makes me realize how similar we all are.”
He forgot what a deep philosopher she was. “You should have recorded that for Lij,” he murmured. “He’d have adored it.” He studied her unwaveringly. “You two suit each other.”
Smiling, she leaned toward him and commented, “You appreciate my words as much as he does.” She drew back, away from him. “You do have a depth about you that you hide behind your impenetrable facade of the fun-loving, sexy man, you know.”
He cocked up an eyebrow at her, he didn’t believe her, not in the least. “So not only am I a sexy and fun-loving man, I’m deep,” he commented, screwing his face up with immense contemplation of her reflective words. “That’s something.”
“I’m not joking, Orli,” she murmured softly, her eyes filled with an emotion that was almost distressing. “You don’t want people to know that you’re complicated, you want them to believe you are simple uncomplicated--- but you are what you are. You are convoluted whether you like it or not.”
